Reports of tests of new insecticides have tended to minimize the practical dangers to beekeeping when these toxicants are applied to crops in bloom. The idea is current that these insecticides are harmless to bees if applied during hours when bees are not on the field. An examination of one alfalfa-seed area, where bee losses from commercial applications were reported, prompted a more critical examination to determine the effect of field applications of these insecticides on bees. This paper is a report of field experiments near Logan. Utah, with early-morning applications of DDT, chlordane, parathion, and toxaphene to alfalfa in …

Marketing Of Aspen, Zigmond A. Zasada
Marketing Of Aspen, Zigmond A. Zasada
Aspen Bibliography
The Lake States timber industry did a creditable job of producing and using considerable volumes of aspen during the war years. At that time it was shown that aspen could fill a variety of uses satisfactorily. However, improved marketing techniques are needed if present aspen stands are to be fully and profitably utilized. The aim of this paper is to call the attention of owners and producers of aspen to some of the points to be considered to improve marketing.
Aspen For Excelsior, Hereford Garland
Aspen For Excelsior, Hereford Garland
Aspen Bibliography
The use of aspen for the manufacture of excelsior is well established in the Lake States. The properties of the wood make it suitable for this general use, and there are adequate supplies available for increased productive capacity. The process of manufacturing excelsior is relatively uncomplicated, and the production equipment is simple and relatively low in cost. That the industry is not more extensive is obviously due to limitations in markets for excelsior. Expansion of the industry depends primarily upon the development of new uses and new products having excelsior as a base.
Levels Of Lygus Infestation And Stages Of Plant Development As Related To Alfalfa-Seed Production, B. Austin Haws
Levels Of Lygus Infestation And Stages Of Plant Development As Related To Alfalfa-Seed Production, B. Austin Haws
Biology
Alfalfa-seed production was one of Utah's most important and lucrative forage crops 24 years ago. Statistical reports compiled by Professor C. J. Sorenson, Research Professor of Etomology at Utah State Agricultural College (30), show that in 1925 the 69,000 acres of alfalfa seed raised in Utah yielded an average of 6.37 bushels of seed per acre. Utah's alfalfa-seed yield in 1925 was 42 percent of the total alfalfa seed grown in the United States. This bumper crop brought an income of approximately $4,433,022 to Utah seed producers that year.

Biology
The turkey industry is one of the largest agricultural pursuits of the state of Utah. Synovitis is one of the most costly diseases in this industry. Surveys in limited areas in 1944 showed 39% of the flocks were afflicted, with mortality varying from 5% to 20%. In 1947 and 1948 there was widespread occurence of the disease throughout the state; the disease usually occurred between the 9th to the 12th week of age and persisted until marketing. Synovitis has caused considerable economic loss to the grower.

Alfalfa As A Source Of Carotene In The Diet Of Chicks, James Joseph O'Toole
Alfalfa As A Source Of Carotene In The Diet Of Chicks, James Joseph O'Toole
Biology
The value of carotene as a precursor of vitamin A in the animal body was shown conclusively by the work of Moore (20). Rats which had been depleted of vitamin A and fed carotene following the depletion period, showed vitamin A absorption maxima in liver tissue when assayed spectrophotometrically. Depleted rats fed on the carotene-free diet showed no vitamin A absorption spectra. Capper, McKibben and Prentice (6) showed that chickens were also able to convert carotene into vitamin A.

The Biology Of Nabis Alternatus Parshley (Hemiptera, Heteroptera) And Its Predacious Relationship To Some Alfalfa Pests In Cache County, Utah, Earl John Taylor
Biology
Nabis alternatus Parshley is a hemipterous insect belonging to the family Nabidae. It is commonly found in alfalfa fields, among small grains, native grasses, and on rangeland throughout Utah. A need for life cycle studies has existed for species of this family. This becomes evident as one reads the fragmentary reports of their habits as insect predators.

A Study Of The Factors Used To Determine Pupil Marks By The Male Physical Education Directors In The High Schools Of Utah, Vaughn William Gordon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Much criticism has been directed at the physical educators in most of our public schools regarding their methods of determining pupil marks for participation in physical education classes. This criticism has come from many sources. It has come from physical educators, educators, pupils, and the general public. Bookwalter, a leader in the field of physical education, states:
More frequently than one might suspect, pupil's marks in physical education have been determined the night before marks were to be issued. They were then based upon attendance and the teacher's ability to remember the pupil's conformity to rules. Teachers have been known …

Supply And Demand Of Elementary School Teachers In Utah, Arthur D. Jackson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the years of World War II the faculties of the public schools in Utah, as well as in the rest of the nation, were depleted to a serious extent, and enrollment in teacher training institutions throughout the country decreased. Because of this condition the State Department of Education in Utah as well as in other states was forced to issue letters of authorization to teachers who could not meet standard certification requirements in order to staff the schools. Many of these teachers are still teaching in the schools today.

A Guide To Be Used In Evaluating Audio-Visual Aids For Use In The Teaching Of Industrial Arts In The Junior High Schools Of Utah, Dan H. Swenson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
To find the beginning of the use of audio-visual aids in the teaching of industrial arts is difficult, if not impossible. The very nature of the work makes the use of audio-visual teaching methods absolutely indispensable. Long before the term "audio-visual aids" had been coined and before any attention had been given to the teaching method, as such, teachers of industrial arts were making use of the demonstration, the model, the exhibit, and many other teaching devices since included in the scope of the meaning of audio-visual teaching aids.
It would be hard indeed to imagine how a teacher could …

Seedling Emergence And Survival Of Sixteen Grasses In Central Utah, Neil C. Frischknecht
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The successful artificial seeding of deteriorated range lands offers much promise for improving the economic security of western range states. It has been demonstrated that artifiial seeding is the most rapid means of increasing the quantity and improving the quality of forage for livestock as well as for stabilizing the soils agianst erosion; hence, it contributes directly to the stability of the agricultural industry and to the general welfare of the states involved. Agricultural pursuits have always been, and appear destined to be, the fundamental basis for a permanent society in the West. The present study was undertaken to learn …

A Study Of The Type And Extent Of Hearing Loss Of Speech Defective Children In The Elementary Schools Of Cache County And Of The Logan City School Districts, Merlin J. Mecham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many articles and textbooks which have recently been written in the field of speech correction indicate that a high percent of all children who have speech defects also have a hearing deficiency. Some even say that a higher percent of these children have hearing deficiencies than do children who are normal in speech.
Because of the great interest which has been aroused in the nature of the problems of the speech defectives, and because of the desire which exists for them to be helped in their handicaps, there is a necessity for their problems to be understood as thoroughly as …
The Diet And Daily Forage Consumption Of An Experimental Herd Of Sheep On Utah's Winter Range, Lee A. Sharp
The Diet And Daily Forage Consumption Of An Experimental Herd Of Sheep On Utah's Winter Range, Lee A. Sharp
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The forage produced on Utah’s winter range is generally deficient in some nutrients that are required for the phase of sheep production that takes place on these ranges. This forage need only supply little more than maintenance ration, but because of low forage production on these areas and generally low quality forage, these requirements often are not met.
