The Effect Of Variety, Harvest Time, And Brine Separation On Thiamine, Riboflavin, And Niacin Contents Of Green Lima Beans, Prasertsri Dee-Ananta
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The increasing importance of the lima beans as a substantial cash crop for the growers or farmers and as a quality food for the consumer has initiated many investigations directed towards improving its quality as a vegetable crop. Lima beans are well suited for processing; hence, studies of the quality of different varieties in relation to time of harvest have been made. Host processors are in agreement that the beans attain maximum quality before they are fully mature. After that, the yield and size increase whereas the quality decreases.

Analysis Of Selected Factors Contributing To Decrease In Post-High School Programs In Agriculture Education In Utah, Dean P. Barton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Technology in agriculture has changed more in the past hundred years than in the previous thousand, and the rate of change seems to be accelerating. No longer can one farm successfully for the duration of a lifetime with the same knowledge, understanding and skill which he possessed as a young farmer (1).
Senators and Representatives recognized the need for the continuous preparation of farm people for proficiency in their chosen field and in 1917 introduced and passed the Smith-Hughes Act. This enable school administrators to offer vocational instruction in agriculture to young and adult farmers by providing additional funds to …

Chlorophyll And Productivity In A Mountain River, William J. Mcconnell
Chlorophyll And Productivity In A Mountain River, William J. Mcconnell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Investigation of primary production in streams and rivers has lagged behind similar investigations in marine and lacustrine environments. Recently, however, Odum (1956) has demonstrated methods that allow the estimation of productivity of most moving waters. For reasons discussed later in this paper, Odum's method is not satisfactory for shallow, very rapid rivers as typified by Logan River. The present investigation then was primarily an exploration of a method possibly applicable to measurement of productivity in shallow rapid rivers.
Investigations of phases of the ecology and distribution of the main contributors to primary production, the benthic algae, was a necessary corollary …
A Study On The Phenotypic Stability Of Selected Eastern Forage Synthetics Grown Under Utah Conditions, Don J. Heinz
A Study On The Phenotypic Stability Of Selected Eastern Forage Synthetics Grown Under Utah Conditions, Don J. Heinz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The production of forage seed for use in the eastern United States is a large industry in Utah and other Western States. The development or forage synthetics in the east with production or seed in the west raises the questions “Is there a change in the synthetic when seed is produced under different environmental conditions?” To obtain information relating to genetic stability of grass and legume seed crops produced under various environmental conditions, the USDA-ARS Crops Research Division, Forage and Range Research Branch, Foundation Seed Production Section, set up several experimental plots in the western United States. These are located …

Pollution of the atmosphere and its potential deleterious effects on health, industry, agriculture and natural resources are causing grave concern in many parts of the world. In the past century there has developed in the fields embraced by physical and biological sciences a considerable knowledge of theoretical and applied information, serving as a versatile tool in combating such problems. Air pollution problems seem to have gained much attention with the rapid development of various industries in major parts of the world. Rural and urban areas adjoining these industrial locales are confronted with the dangerous overall problems of air pollution. Evidently, …

The Phytoplankton Of The Logan River, Utah, A Mountain Stream, William J. Clark
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The voluminous limnological literature contains few studies of mountain streams. Though there are a few papers on the benthic algae (see Budde 1928, Raabe 1951) only Pennak (1943) reports year-round quantitative data on the phytoplankton. Brinley (1950) gives some phytoplankton information in a summer study of streams in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The Peltier Effect And Its Use For Measuring Relative Activity Of Soil Water, Hans C. Korven
The Peltier Effect And Its Use For Measuring Relative Activity Of Soil Water, Hans C. Korven
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Soil moisture measurement embraces two basic concepts, namely, water content and relative activity. The measurement of moisture content, either on a weight or volume basis, yields the amount or quantity of water in the soil. The measurement of relative activity or the energy required to remove unit of water is related to the availability of the soil moisture to the plant. The measurement of soil bulk density, irrigation efficiency, and the amount of water to apply in an irrigation are a few examples that require the use of the moisture content concept. Whereas the first concept determines the amount of …

The Effect Of 2 Soil Fertility Levels On 5 Potato Varieties In Relation To Yield, Specific Gravity And Chipping Quality, Gayland D. Robison
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The potato enterprise is important in Utah as it provides a cash crop and also a means of diversifying and intensifying the operations on many irrigated farms. It is of particular value in the sections of the state that have a short growing season where other crops cannot feasibly be produced. The potato chip industry supplies a demand for large quantities of potatoes. The usage by this industry makes it a major factor in potato farming economy.
The making of chips originated over a hundred years ago as the result of an accident. A silver of potato fell into a …

An Evaluation Of The Salt Tolerance Of Particular Varieties, Strains, And Selections Of Three Grasses And Two Legumes, Farrel John Olsen Jr
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In arid and semiarid areas in the Western United States, soluble salts tend to accumulate in the soil in amounts harmful to crop production. A considerable portion of this land cannot be reclaimed due to the poor quality of permeability of the soil. Therefore, the wise selection of crops that will produce satisfactory yields on these soils in necessary.
The salt tolerance of many crop plants has been investigated; however, more information is needed on the relative salt tolerance of varieties, strains, and selections. Such information will permit the selection and development of varieties and strains of crop plants which …

The Agricultural Phase Of The Technical Assistance Program Of The United States In Iran, With Special Reference To The Role Of Utah State University, Malek Mansour Esfandiary
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
My thesis, while examining the broad scope of American technical assistance in agriculture to Iran, emphasizes the work of scientists and technicians who went there under contract with Utah State University (USAC). I have tried to make this work as complete as available information makes possible.
There are several problems encountered. Some technicians were reluctant to make comments which might appear to be critical of either the American administration or the Iranian government-cultural climate; some did not receive my letter probably because of a change of address. Reference materials were scarce. In most cases it was almost impossible to separate …
Geology Of The Southern Part Of Wellsville Mountain, Wasatch Range, Utah, Ronald H. Gelnett
Geology Of The Southern Part Of Wellsville Mountain, Wasatch Range, Utah, Ronald H. Gelnett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wellsville Mountain is 10 miles west of Logan, Utah, at the northern extremity of the Wasatch Range. Paleozoic rocks form a northeast-dipping homocline bounded in part by northwest-trending high-angle faults and cut by a series of northeast-trending high-angle faults. A major transverse fault, with a stratigraphic displacement of 4,500 feet, divides the mountain into two distinct blocks.
The rock units of the area are comparable to those of the Logan quadrangle immediately to the east. Pre-Cambrian rocks crop out in Box Elder Canyon, just east of Brigham City, and are overlain by at least 20,000 feet of northeast-dipping Paleozoic rocks …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Dehydration is perhaps the oldest method of preserving fruits and vegetables. However, it is still an important method of preservation. During World War II, efforts were geared to investigate the possibilities of such newer dehydrated foods as powdered eggs, tomatoes, and potato granules. Since then many new products are flooding the market every year. The use of dehydrated products has increased primarily because they usually require less space and have longer shelf life, and at the same time they have much more concentrated nutritive value than fresh, canned, or frozen foods. Hence, they can easily be adopted for military rations. …

Through the ages, people have been confronted with the problem of storing food after the harvest season for consumption during the winter months. Foods have been preserved by dehydration, canning, and refrigeration. However, people usually prefer fresh vegetables become unfit for human consumption as a result of sprouting and breakdown in storage.
Some chemicals have been used with various degrees of success in preventing sprouting of certain vegetables. The chemicals were applied as a pre-harvest foliar spray or directly on the tubers or on the roots.
In 1954, a law was passed by the United States Congress authorizing the release …
What Financial Savings, If Any, Accrue To Utah School Districts Because Of Pupil Attendance In Non-Public Schools, And The Released Time Program In The Secondary Schools, C. Don Bishop
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is generally recognized that one of the factors which causes variation among the states in the cost of public education is the relative number of pupils enrolled in private and parochial schools. In this connection it has been pointed out that the state of Utah has a very small enrollment in such schools. In fact, a report for the school year 1951-52 shows that Utah’s rank was 46 among all the states, with only 1.5 percent of the total pupil enrollment in non-public schools. It seems reasonable to expect, however, that Utah does realize some savings in school costs …
Characteristics Of Manila And Related Soil Series, Flayeh H. Altaie
Characteristics Of Manila And Related Soil Series, Flayeh H. Altaie
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In many parts of the world soils have been found that have apparently been formed under climatic conditions that no longer exist. In many places in northern Utah in areas associated with ancient Lake Bonneville, deep soils, fine-textured and non-calcareous, have been observed immediately above the highest shore line of the ancient lake. These soils have essentially no free carbonates to depths ranging from 4 to 15 feet, even though they exist on relatively steep slopes. In Davis and Utah Counties, soils having these characteristics have been given the tentative series name, Manila.
Soils studied for this thesis include one …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Current literature may not agree, but it seems safe to say that to the educator, the academically superior student has always held a great deal of interest. All institutions of learning desire to attract and retain students with high scholastic potential. This is evidenced by the present concern as to whether or not superior students are being adequately provided for in the schools.
The Natural Reproduction Of The Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki Richardson, In Strawberry Reservoir, Utah, William S. Platts
The Natural Reproduction Of The Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki Richardson, In Strawberry Reservoir, Utah, William S. Platts
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Strawberry Reservoir, Utah is an 8,000 acre lake at the elevation of 7,550 feet; it has a maximum depth of 52 feet and an average depth of 18 feet. The supply of cutthroat trout eggs used to replenish and distribute this trout throughout the state are taken from two spawning traps located on reservoir tributaries. Because it has not proven economical to raise cutthroat to a larger size than newly hatched fry, it is at this stage they are planted. Because of competition, predation, and lack of space the planting back of fry to maintain the fishery and spawning run …
A Study Of Cheese Spreads And Dips, Grant M. Steed
A Study Of Cheese Spreads And Dips, Grant M. Steed
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Each year in the State of Utah, thousands of pounds of a number of varieties of bulk and packaged cheese are returned to the manufacturing plants from the stores and other distribution points. The main reasons are: broken wrapper or rind, crushed or otherwise mutilated package, and mold development.
At the present time much of this cheese is shipped out of the state for processing. The remainder is sold at drastically reduced prices. If this unmarketable returned cheese were changed in form with good consumer acceptance the industry would experience a real savings.
A Critical Appraisal Of Methods Of Sucrose Analysis In Sugar Beets, Homer M. Lebaron
A Critical Appraisal Of Methods Of Sucrose Analysis In Sugar Beets, Homer M. Lebaron
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Although the parent of the present sugar beet was probably known and used before the building of the pyramid of Cheops (22), it was as recent as 210 years ago that Marggraf obtained the first crystalized sucrose from the root. It was 40 years later before Achard claimed its potentialities as an efficient industry. The product rapidly passed from the status of a luxury to a vital necessity, until today sugar beet production receives some protection or preference in every country where sugar beets are grown.

Utah's Future Water Problems, Wayne D. Criddle
Utah's Future Water Problems, Wayne D. Criddle
Faculty Honor Lectures
Utah is rapidly changing from what was once predominately an agricultural state to an urban and industrial state. This shift is not decreasing our water needs; it is often intensifying these needs and creating many new problems. Perhaps we should ask ourselves-are we prepared to recognize and accept these changes? Are we really facing up to the problems that are developing or are we turning our heads and hoping they will go away? These changes involve technical, legal, and sociological problems never before encountered, some of which I should like to discuss.
Before attempting to look at Utah's water problems …

The Effects Of Woodpeckers On Populations Of The Engelmann Spruce Beetle, F B. Knight
The Effects Of Woodpeckers On Populations Of The Engelmann Spruce Beetle, F B. Knight
The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography
Woodpeckers have been recognized for many years as a major factor in the natural reduction of Engelmann spruce beetle populations. A means of assessing their value has been developed. Five classifications of woodpecker feeding based on woodpecker work on 225 trees were studies. An analysis of populations measurements showed a correlation between beetle survival and the woodpecker classification and the intensity of infestation in each tree. A heavy woodpecker classification resulted n very little survival at all intensities of infestation. Survival increased both with an increase in intensity of infestation and a lower woodpecker classification. The average reduction in populations …
