Immunology Of Coccidiosis Caused By Eimeria Bovis In Calves, Clyde Merle Senger May 1958

Immunology Of Coccidiosis Caused By Eimeria Bovis In Calves, Clyde Merle Senger

Biology

Coccidiosis is a disease which can occur in most vertebrates and certain invertebrates as a result of infection by organism classified in the Order Coccidia of the Class Sporozoa, Phylum Protozoa. Host animals become infected by ingesting the exogenous resistant stage, the oocyst (Figures 1 and 2). These oocysts may be ingested with contaminated food and water or from the bodies of other animals. In the intestine of the new host, the oocysts rupture and release a specific number of sporosoites depending upon ths genus of coccidia involved. The liberated sporesoites penetrate epithelial or other cells of the intestine and …

A Cytological Study Of Agropyron Dasystachyum, Bert W. Winterton May 1958

A Cytological Study Of Agropyron Dasystachyum, Bert W. Winterton

Biology

This study is concerned with the meiotic chromosome behavior of Agropyron dasystachyum (Hook.) Scribn., commonly known as thickspike wheatgrass. Detailed analyses of the pollen mother cells have been made in an attempt to establish the degree of chromosome pairing, occurence of univalents and multivalents, chromosome laggards, micronuclei, and other chromosomal irregularities. These data should provide evidence regarding the type of polyploidy present in this species and indirectly in Agropyron albicans.

Continuous Low Level Treatment Of Calves With Sulfabromomethazine As A Means Of Controlling Coccidiosis, Glen W. Clark May 1958

Continuous Low Level Treatment Of Calves With Sulfabromomethazine As A Means Of Controlling Coccidiosis, Glen W. Clark

Biology

Coccidiosis is a protozoan disease. It is produced by small, one-celled organisms of the genus Eimeria. Eleven species have been reported in cattle in this country (11). At least two species, E. bovis and E. zurnii are known to be pathogenic to cattle (21).

The Typing Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkey Epizootics, William R. Thornley May 1958

The Typing Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkey Epizootics, William R. Thornley

Biology

Utah has been confronted with the problem of turkey synovitis becoming epizootic in certain areas of the state. This is a crippling disease of turkeys causing considerable loss among birds soon after they are placed on the range. Because much of the expense of brooding and rearing has already been encountered by the growers, the loss is often severe.

The Relative Influence Of The Reaction In Immune Calves On The Sexual And Asexual Stages Of Eimeria Bovis, Richard A. Heckmann May 1958

The Relative Influence Of The Reaction In Immune Calves On The Sexual And Asexual Stages Of Eimeria Bovis, Richard A. Heckmann

Biology

Coccidiosis has been listed as the third most important parasitic disease in cattle (13). Foster in 1949 estimated that this disease is responsible for an annual loss of ten million dollars in the cattle industry and he believed that the economic loss is at least as great as that caused by coccidiosis in poultry (17). Bovine coccidiosis kills many calves before they are six months old. Only rarely are cattle found free of coccidia (26). According to Gibbons and Baker (18) the mortality has been estimated as high as 29.3 percent in several outbreaks of bovine coccidiosis.

Biology And Control Of Mcdaniel Mite, Tetranychus Mcdanieli Mcg., In Utah, Gerald L. Nielsen May 1958

Biology And Control Of Mcdaniel Mite, Tetranychus Mcdanieli Mcg., In Utah, Gerald L. Nielsen

Biology

Mites are the cause of untold damage to agriculture each year. Some of these mites, such as the clover mite, are fairly well known to the general public. They often invade our homes and injure our crops. We find many species of mites in our gardens on vegetables and ornamentals; however, they are often overlooked as the cause of the damage. This is possibly due to the small size of the mites and to the fact that they frequently assume the color of the leaves upon which they are feeding.

Some Effects Of Aldrin, Chlordane, Dieldrin And Heptachlor On The European Earwig, E. Fred Legner

Biology

During the past 15 years the European earwig (Forficula auricularia L.) has assumed the number one position as a general pest to home owners in Utah. It has spread to nearly every corner of the state where environmental conditions are suitable for its growth, and agricultural agents in certain Utah counties have received more complaints concerning earwigs than any other insect pest. This recent interest in earwigs has resulted in many suggestions and recommendations as to the most effective means of control.

An Ecological Study Of The Bottom Fauna Of Bear Lake Idaho And Utah, Earl W. Smart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In evaluating the potential ability of a lake to produce fish, probably no single standard is so important as an estimate of the amount of bottom fauna (Deevey and Bishop, 1942).

The study of the bottom fauna of Bear Lake was a part of the investigation of its limnology and fisheries, begun in 1952. This study was sponsored through federal monies made available through the Dingle-Johnson Act. The primary purpose of the study was to examine all the evidence in estimating the fish producing capacity of the lake. Bear Lake is the second largest fresh water lake in Utah but …

Church And State Relationships In Education In Utah, James R. Clark May 1958

Church And State Relationships In Education In Utah, James R. Clark

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study treats a highly controversial area in American education as it applies to the State of Utah. The proper relation between Church and state in the field of education has not yet been settled, nor is it likely ever to be with any finality. In two most recent cases involving the legal issues of Church and State in education ( McCullum vs. Board of Education, 333 U. S. 203 and Zorach V. Clawson, 343 U. s. 306) the United States Supreme Court has written split opinions. The 1956 White House Conference on Education found that religion and segregation were …

A Study Of The Sequence Of The Professional Education Program For Elementary School Teachers At Utah State University, Christopher Lee Colston

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Education, like any other profession, is responsible for constant improvement. The professional teacher education institutions are constantly looking for ways of improving professional teacher education programs. The course sequence of the teacher education program is an area for continual improvement. Every teacher educator has a theory as to what is the best teacher education program and what is the best sequence for this theory program. The literature has revealed very little in the area of a sequence for the teacher education program.

A Critical Survey Of Elementary School Playgrounds In Cache And Box Elder Counties, Thomas Cracas May 1958

A Critical Survey Of Elementary School Playgrounds In Cache And Box Elder Counties, Thomas Cracas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the fundamental needs of elementary school children is to develop their motor systems by means of physical activities adequately suited to their representative age groups. In so doing, opportunities are provided for sociological and psychological requirements essential in developing a healthy, confident individual capable and willing to accept social and family obligations and responsibilities. This infers that an essential function of the school is to provide appropriate areas, facilities, and equipment for such activities. It also suggests that the playground be an integral element of a modern school.

The purpose of this study was: (1) to construct check …

A Study Of Two Groups Of Superior Students At The Logan Junior High School, Rudgar H. Daines May 1958

A Study Of Two Groups Of Superior Students At The Logan Junior High School, Rudgar H. Daines

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Educators have long been aware of the varied needs, abilities, and interests of children. They have tried to provide proper curriculum, materials, and methods to meet the wide range of abilities that exists in every classroom. Despite the attempt of the schools to provide for the particular needs of the individuals, the gifted students continue as a neglected segment in our schools. Because of other pressing educational problems, the awareness of their needs has been somewhat pushed into the background, and only through the present demand for greater leadership in our country and for the optimum use of our manpower, …

Some Chemical Properties Of The Profiles Of Two Soil Series As Shown By Horizons And By Increments, Verle Q. Hale May 1958

Some Chemical Properties Of The Profiles Of Two Soil Series As Shown By Horizons And By Increments, Verle Q. Hale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Soil classification in this country is based on the system proposed by Marbut in 1920 (2). This system uses eight criteria, one of which is the chemical composition of the soil horizons. Workers in the field of soil survey are depending more and more upon laboratory data to characterize and differentiate soils not only at the series level but also at higher levels of classification where it may be necessary to establish the presence or absence of critical horizons or characteristics. This was predicted by Robinson (16) when he said that laboratory analysis is needed to give "precise physical meaning …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem involved in this project is the composition of a series of selections for string ensemble. The series is comprised of five sections, each to parallel general achievement of the string students at the end of each year for five years. The degree of advancement one year over another is based not upon the slow student, nor the student who learns extremely fast. Nor is it graded to meet achievement of students who have been afforded a large amount of private instruction over the five years. Rather, it is based upon the growth and development, as observed by the …

Horizontal Movement Of Moisture In Soil, D. W. L. Read May 1958

Horizontal Movement Of Moisture In Soil, D. W. L. Read

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The movement of water in soils is of great importance to all of us but especially to agriculturalists. If it were not for this movement plants would not be able to survive in soil. If the moisture moves too freely in the soil insufficient water can be stored to supply plants during dry periods. The movement of water through soil may remove plant nutrients or accumulate salts in soil horizons.

The flow of water in soil has been studied extensively for many years. Water movement can occur in either saturated or unsaturated soil. Darcy's law can be used with a …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Dresher reported that today there is an increased and growing interest among the lay population as well as among educators in the appreciation of the drop-out problem of the public schools of the United States. Some educators believe that one of the most important issues facing education today is the problem of determining ways by which the high school pupil might be encouraged to finish his secondary trainings.

The Effect Of Soil Moisture And Fertilizers On Seed Germination, Stephen Dubetz May 1958

The Effect Of Soil Moisture And Fertilizers On Seed Germination, Stephen Dubetz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Failure of viable seeds to germinate results in poor stands and often in lower yields. Some of the more important factors that affect germination of seed are temperature, moisture, aeration, and alkalinity.

Planting of speciality crops under irrigation in southern Alberta, Canada, usually is done when temperature is favourable to germination. However, soil moisture, especially in the seed zone, may not always be adequate - a situation brought about, in part, by the strong winds that prevail in this area. Results at the Experimental Farm, Lethbridge, Alberta, show that irrigated crops respond to phosphorus and nitrogen. During the past six …

An Application Of A Thermodynamic Flow Equation To Water Movement In Unsaturated Soil, Brennan Derry Soane May 1958

An Application Of A Thermodynamic Flow Equation To Water Movement In Unsaturated Soil, Brennan Derry Soane

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The movement of water in soil presents many interesting problems to the research worker. It is also a subject which finds wide and important application in agriculture and several branches of engineering.

The object of this work was to examine the usefulness of a new equation of flow of water in unsaturated soil. If valid, this new approach may be able to eliminate some of the gaps in our present knowledge of the subject.

All soil lying above the capillary fringe of a water table is in the unsaturated state with respect to water. This means that in any macroscopic …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Importance of lamb marketings

The production and marketing of lambs is important in Utah's economy. In 1956, Utah ranked fifth in the United States in lambs produced and saved, with 1,038,000 head produced and 840,000 marketed for consumption, table 1. Cash receipts from the lamb marketings during the year amounted to over 10 million dollars, and in addition, the state's economy benefited through revenues, employment, and raw materials which were provided by the lamb industry.

Marketing decisions

Lamb producers and handlers are faced with many decisions in marketing their lambs. They not only must decide when and where to sell, …

Linkage And Inheritance Studies In Barley (Hordeum), Robert E. Heiner May 1958

Linkage And Inheritance Studies In Barley (Hordeum), Robert E. Heiner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Barley has had wide acceptance not only as a cultivated crop but also as an excellent source of genetic material. Barley was being used in inheritance studies by Tschermak when he rediscovered Mendel's laws of heredity. Since then barley has become one of the most widely used plants for genetic studies known today.

More than 100 characters have been investigated indicating the relative ease of classification. There are 7 linkage groups corresponding to the 7 chromosomes in which 2 or more characters have been located as reported by Robertson (1939). But Kramer, Veyl, and Hanson (1954), from translocation experiments, suggest …

Absorption Of C14 Labeled Sucrose By Nectaries, Cecil Wright Lefevre May 1958

Absorption Of C14 Labeled Sucrose By Nectaries, Cecil Wright Lefevre

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the early Eighteenth Century the significance of nectar secretion has been debated. Some have reasoned that it is reabsorbed into the plant and used as energy for the developing embryo while others believe it is a waste product which attracts pollinating insects.

It has been suggested (Brink and Cooper, 1947) that the nutrient supply to developing ovules is a major factor in the development of seed. Also, alfalfa fields pollinated by pollen-collecting bees produce greater seed yields than those pollinated by nectar collectors (Bohart, Nye, and Levin, 1955). It is a well-known fact that more flowers are tripped by …

Community Utilization Of School Plants In Weber County School District From 1955 To 1957, R. Glen Miller May 1958

Community Utilization Of School Plants In Weber County School District From 1955 To 1957, R. Glen Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Present day trends indicate a definite movement toward building school plants more adequately and more adaptable for community use and for wider community utilization.

It is the belief of many educators that the school should be designed to provide the facilities required for housing the school and its many community programs. It is not primarily a monument to the architect and the school authorities. Schools should be a learning laboratory for all members of the community. Weber County school administrators have consistently supported building utilization point of view as expressed by Pittenger:

A new impetus has been given to the …
