The Effect Of Copper And Iron Salts On The Expression Of Eye Abnormalities And Melanotic Tumors In Different Stocks Of Drosophila Melanogaster, J. Howard Turner May 1959

The Effect Of Copper And Iron Salts On The Expression Of Eye Abnormalities And Melanotic Tumors In Different Stocks Of Drosophila Melanogaster, J. Howard Turner

Biology

Phenotypes in Drosophila can be altered by subjecting the developing larvae to environments containing an exess of heavy metal salts (34, 36). Such alterations, which resemble the effects of mutant genes but are not inherited, have been called phenocopies. The mechanism through which the phenocopy is produced may suggest a process through which a mutant gene influences a phenotype. In cases where such parallels are drawn, it is assumed that a mutant gene and an environmental agent have a similar effect on a particular step in an established metabolic pathway. It would seem less likely but not impossible for the …

Comparison Of The Influence Of 17-Hydrocortisone And 2-Methyl 9a-Fluorohydrocortisone Acetate On The Involution Of The Thymus Gland In Mice, Gerald K. Wallace May 1959

Comparison Of The Influence Of 17-Hydrocortisone And 2-Methyl 9a-Fluorohydrocortisone Acetate On The Involution Of The Thymus Gland In Mice, Gerald K. Wallace

Biology

Previous studies have shown that the adrenal cortical hormones play an important part in lymphatic tissues physiology. Several authors have demonstrated alterations in blood leukocytes and decreased thymus weight following administration of extracts or purified preparations of adrenal cortical hormones. For this reason the thymus gland weight and lymphocyte response have been used as a method of determining activity of several of the corticoids.

Studies In Transmission In Ovine Vibriosis, William H. Rose May 1959

Studies In Transmission In Ovine Vibriosis, William H. Rose

Biology

Vibrio fetus, Smith and Taylor, is the principle etiological agent of ovine infectious abortion in the United States. During the 1952 lambing season, the lamb abortions were estimated at 50,000 in Colorado, 30,000 to 40,000 in Idaho, and from 10,000 to 15,000 each in Utah and Wyoming. A conservative estimate of premature lamb losses due to V. fetus infections in the western states for this year was 100,000. In infected flocks the incidence of mortality in aborting ewes may be as high as 10 percent. Since 1952 the incidence of vibrosis among sheep has remained high.

The Influence Of An Artificial Medium Upon The Morphology Of Swine Cecal Trichomonads, Charles P. Hibler May 1959

The Influence Of An Artificial Medium Upon The Morphology Of Swine Cecal Trichomonads, Charles P. Hibler

Biology

As yet no thorough studies of the trichomonads living in the cecum of swine have been made. In fresh preparations the trichomonads from the nose, stomach, and cecum appear distinct. After a period of cultivation In an artificial medium, however, the flagellates from the cecum became morphologically similar to the cultured porcine nasal and stomach trichomonads. The cultivation of the trichomonads from the cecum apparently results in either a morphological change in the trichomonad or in a selection among different species or types present in the cecum.

Studies Of Ultraviolet Inactivation Of Cucumber Mosaic Virus In Vivo, Twila Elaine Cheney May 1959

Studies Of Ultraviolet Inactivation Of Cucumber Mosaic Virus In Vivo, Twila Elaine Cheney

Biology

It has been known for some time that plant viruses are inactivated in vitro by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation (Arthur and Newell, 1929). The studies of Hollaender and Duggar (1936) and Price and Gowen (1937) have shown that tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is inactivated in vitro according to a simple exponential law suggestive of a "one hit" process. More recently plant viruses have been inactivated in vivo by UV irradiation. Bawden and Kleczkowski (1955) found that the development of virus-induced lesions on French bean leaves could be wholly or partially inhibited by UV irradiation subsequent to inoculation with Rothamsted tobacco necrosis …

Zion In Paradise, S. George Ellsworth May 1959

Zion In Paradise, S. George Ellsworth

Faculty Honor Lectures

EVERYONE KNOWS something about the Mormon struggle for a place on the American frontier, and the ultimate settlement in the mountain valleys of Utah in 1847. But on the underside of the world at the same time there was being enacted on volcanic islands and coral reefed atolls of the South Seas another part of the Mormon epic, an epic itself, heroic and enduring, unheralded and unsung, of ardent missionaries dedicated to a prophetic religion's inherent commitment to the idea of universal conversion. From most humble and precarious beginnings the first truly foreign mission of the Mormons spread its influence …

Artificial Pothole And Level Ditch Development As A Means Of Increasing Waterfowl Production, Charles H. Lacy May 1959

Artificial Pothole And Level Ditch Development As A Means Of Increasing Waterfowl Production, Charles H. Lacy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The glaciated prairie pothole country of the Midwest forms a vital segment of the most important waterfowl breeding habitat in North America. Here are hatched three-quarters of all the ducks raised in the United States. During a recent seven-year period the three-state area of Minnesota and the Dakotas produced an average of 4 to 5 million ducks annually (Janzon, 1947). This wetland region which once comprised 115,000 square miles in five states had shrunk to about 56,000 square miles by 1956 (Lynch, 1956). To maintain the present rate of waterfowl production in the face of continued destruction of habitat through …

Motor Truck Transportation Of Cattle In Utah, Loren H. Grover May 1959

Motor Truck Transportation Of Cattle In Utah, Loren H. Grover

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The beef cattle industry in Utah is of major importance in the economy of the state. In terms of cash receipts it is the largest single agricultural enterprise. In 1957 cash receipts from the sale of cattle and calves amounted to $38,405,000. This figure represents approximately 70 percent of cash receipts from the sale of all meat animals. It comprises 33 percent of cash receipts from the sale of livestock and livestock products and 24 percent of total cash receipts from farm marketings (2).

The production of beef animals will continue to assume a position of importance in Utah's agriculture, …

Problems Of Navajo Male Graduates Of Intermountain School During Their First Year Of Employment, Joe E. Baker May 1959

Problems Of Navajo Male Graduates Of Intermountain School During Their First Year Of Employment, Joe E. Baker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the primary objectives of education in the United States is to prepare young people for adult life. They are expected to become a part of the social and civic life of the community, and by working in a vocation to contribute to their own personal welfare and that of the society in which they live.

The above tasks are considered some of the most important and difficult ones facing all youth. If it is difficult for the youth who has had full advantage of the culture in which he lives, it is certain to be much more difficult …

A History Of General Obligation Bonding In Logan City, Kenneth W. Godfrey May 1959

A History Of General Obligation Bonding In Logan City, Kenneth W. Godfrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Borrowing is of great importance in meeting local revenue shortages. Philadelphia began the history of local borrowing by financing the construction of a water system in 1789, from a loan of $150,000. By 1843, the seventeen largest cities had an outstanding indebtedness of $125.5 million. In the 1840's and 1850's cities and counties borrowed to construct public works, and aid in the building of railroads. They defaulted on their loans frequently. In spite of the low state of municipal credit, state governments enacted general legislation by which the local governments were granted greater freedom in borrowing. But after the Civil …

The Selection Of Superior Alfalfa Varieties For Utah Conditions, Richard M. Taylor May 1959

The Selection Of Superior Alfalfa Varieties For Utah Conditions, Richard M. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa plays an important part in Utah's economy. It is the major forage crop and occupies approximately 40 percent of all irrigated land in the state.

During the past most of the alfalfa varietal trials have been conducted in Cache Valley, which is not representative of conditions found throughout Utah. In fact, it would be impossible to select any one location for conducting tests where all insect, disease, and climatic conditions would be represented. In view of this it was felt that an attempt should be made to conduct varietal trials at several locations to permit the selection of varieties …

Development And Evaluation Of Laboratory Methods For Determining The Nitrogen Supplying Power Of The Irrigated Soils Of Northern Utah, Jerald Ross Wight May 1959

Development And Evaluation Of Laboratory Methods For Determining The Nitrogen Supplying Power Of The Irrigated Soils Of Northern Utah, Jerald Ross Wight

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen is the most widely needed and the most widely used of the fertilizer elements. Yet, in spite of the voluminous research work of evaluating the nitrogen status of soils, laboratory tests for the purpose of predicting need of nitrogen fertilizer are not very widely used. In general, laboratory tests for nitrogen supplying power have not given satisfactory results. Methods currently employed by a few laboratories can be classified either as biological or chemical. In the former method, the soil is incubated under optimum conditions and the amount of nitrate released over a given period of time is measured and …

The Influence Of Age On The Cation Exchange Capacity Of Plant Roots, Einard S. Haniuk May 1959

The Influence Of Age On The Cation Exchange Capacity Of Plant Roots, Einard S. Haniuk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A yellowing which develops in some plants growing on naturally calcareous soils is called lime-induced chlorosis. The problem is complex, as indicated by Brown and Holmes (1956) and Porter and Thorne (1955). Species and varieties of plants differ in their iron requirements, susceptibility to lime- induced chlorosis, and inter acting soil f actors which affect iron supply (Thorne et al 1950). Chlorosis of plants does not appear, therefore, to stem from a common causative factor. At least a part of this difference has been found to be associated with the plant roots. Thus, through the use of resistant root stock …

Resistance To And Transmission Of Witches' Broom And Comparative Yields Of Alfalfa Varieties In The Uintah Basin, Utah, David Val Glover May 1959

Resistance To And Transmission Of Witches' Broom And Comparative Yields Of Alfalfa Varieties In The Uintah Basin, Utah, David Val Glover

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa is the most important forage crop in Utah. It is of particular importance to the Uintah Basin, Utah area where alfalfa hay and seed production are major sources of agricultural income. This crop owes much of its popularity to the fact that it will normally produce large yields of good forage on land which is unsuited to more intensive cultivation. In many cases it is impractical to advocate disease control practices which involve extra labor or expense and as a result most diseases of alfalfa, if controlled at all, are controlled by the use of resistant varieties.

During the …

The Effect Of Nutrient Levels In Nutrient Cultures On The Translocation Of Foliar Applied Nutrients, David D. Neher May 1959

The Effect Of Nutrient Levels In Nutrient Cultures On The Translocation Of Foliar Applied Nutrients, David D. Neher

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since man first grew crops on calcareous soils he has probably been troubled with what we today call lime-induced chlorosis. This chlorosis has determined whether he grew certain desirable ornamentals or crops or whether he had to substitute others which were less desirable.

Lime-induced chlorosis is spread world wide. It has been reported in the vine and fruit growing regions of Europe, in the chernozem soils of Russia, and many other areas where the rainfall is relatively low and the soil is relatively high in calcium carbonate. In the United States it most frequently occurrs where the average annual rainfall …

An Inheritance And Linkage Study Of 19 Factor Pairs In Barley, Francis Cheney Lebaron May 1959

An Inheritance And Linkage Study Of 19 Factor Pairs In Barley, Francis Cheney Lebaron

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Barley, during the past three decades, has been used considerably for the study of linkage groups and character inheritance. The commercial varieties are diploids, having seven pairs of chromosomes. Six linkage groups have been established. According to studies on interchange by Kramer et al. (1954), two linkage groups, formerly designated as III and VII, may be separate arms of the same chromosome. They are now generally considered as one linkage group.

Though more than two hundred characters have been investigated, less than sixty have been assigned relative positions on genetic maps. In many cases, selection for good characters is …

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Asparagus And Tomatoes, Arthur L. Rivers May 1959

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Asparagus And Tomatoes, Arthur L. Rivers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since growers are generally unable to produce food the year-round, preservation of available food by the growers and processors has continued to challenge the minds of these men and their scientific cohorts. Even the consumer is subject to this problem and mist rely on those from. whoa he receives food as to its present and eventual condition. Many methods of preservation have been used such as pickling, drying, smoking, canning, and freezing. Most of these preservation methods require excessive handling and/or extensive storage facilities.

A Study Of Delayed Gas Formation In Cheddar Cheese, Mark E. Oldham May 1959

A Study Of Delayed Gas Formation In Cheddar Cheese, Mark E. Oldham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During recent years, the dairy industry has been aware of a defect in Cheddar cheese known as "late gas". This causes the mechanical openings to enlarge and become shiny. In Cottage cheese the defect exhibits itself in a general lowering of the grade and quality of the finished product.

Workers in the industry have related this defect to the starter culture, although contamination of milk, equipment and cultures may also be a source. They conclude that with a source of good quality milk and proper manufacturing procedures and efficient sanitation methods, the defect may persist.

Whichever source the defect stems …

Starch Grain Characters, Amylose, And Amylo-Pectin Contents In Relation To Pollination Time And Formation Of Cotyledons In Phaseolus Lunatus L. And Phaseolus Polystachyus L., Amrik Singh Dhaliwal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Beans are an important source of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins for millions of vegetarians in the world, especially in Asia. The quality and harvesting time of beans depend upon the purpose for which the beans are used. For example, for canning and freezing the beans should be harvested when they are neither starchy nor watery but should be sugary. The processing industry in Asia is not highly developed. Hence, the food is usually preserved by sun drying. Sun dried beans are often consumed the year around.

Pod setting is a problem in lima beans and in various other crops. …

Effects Of Gamma-Radiation On The Quality And Shelf-Life Of Certain Fruits, Diane Weber Box May 1959

Effects Of Gamma-Radiation On The Quality And Shelf-Life Of Certain Fruits, Diane Weber Box

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The story of the development of food preservation is as old as the story of man. Cavemen and nomadic tribesmen have little heed to food preservation. They threw away the food left when their hunger was satisfied and searched for more when famished . However, from the time men began to settle down and have permanent homes, the need for some means of retarding food spoilage has been evident.

A Study For The Purpose Of Ascertaining The Basic Units Of Instruction For A Unified Drafting Program In Utah High Schools, Elmont L. Bingham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent years industrial arts programs have experienced a rapid increase in student enrollment. This is especially true of the drafting area. The extraordinary rate of industrial development within our state is largely responsible for demands for improved training in high school drafting programs.

The apparent inconsistency of course content being taught in Utah high schools indicates a strong need for a unified drafting program that will meet the challenge of our industrial society.

Recently, in a few of our Utah high schools, drafting courses that seem to be effected by industrial influence have been added to the industrial arts …

The Effect Of Various Chelates And Chelated Cations On The Availability Of Phosphorus To Tomato Plants, Edgar Dale Deremer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Shortly after the discovery of the usefulness of chelating compounds by agriculturists, whereby metallic cations are supplied in available form to plants, another use was proposed. This paper is dedicated to this resulting use, namely, that certain chelates appear to have value in keeping phosphate compounds from becoming “fixed” or “tied-up” in the soil.

A Comparison Of Internal Bicarbonate Of Some Chlorosis-Resistant And Chlorosis-Susceptible Plants, Ralph Barlow Clark May 1959

A Comparison Of Internal Bicarbonate Of Some Chlorosis-Resistant And Chlorosis-Susceptible Plants, Ralph Barlow Clark

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Iron chlorosis has been a srious problem for many years. This physiological disease has occurred so frequently on calcareous soils that it has been called lime-induced chlorosis by many of the workers. Because the western United States has so many soils of this type, the chlorosis problem has been of primary concern. Untold economic losses have been the result of this physiological disease.

Interveinal yellowing of the leaves along with loss of plant vigor and retarded growth characterize the disease. In severe cases die-back of the terminal growth and eventual death of the plant result. No single factor has been …
