Studies On The Sampling Methodology Of Peas For Yield And Quality, Pratapsinha Chintamani Pendse
Studies On The Sampling Methodology Of Peas For Yield And Quality, Pratapsinha Chintamani Pendse
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Pea1 growers have much at stake in getting high yields of peas of prime quality. The income accruing from a pea crop grown for processors is determined by the yield as well as quality. Therefore the farmers' efforts are directed toward growing such a crop.
Research workers are interested in knowing the yield of peas with known tenderometer values which will indicate the quality of peas. Present methods of field harvesting are costly and time consuming which tend to limit the number of varieties that can be satisfactorily evaluated for trial.
A comparison of sampling techniques with present harvesting …
Streamflow Forecasting For Blacksmith Fork River, Utah, Yu-Si Fok
Streamflow Forecasting For Blacksmith Fork River, Utah, Yu-Si Fok
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The method for streamflow forecasting by using Fourier Series and Multiple Regression as a mathematical model have been suggested and proved with high accuracy for the streamflow forecasting on Logan River, Utah by Professor Cleve H. Milligan and Dr. Rex L. Hurst. 1/
In this thesis the method is extended to the forecasting for the Blacksmith Fork River, south of the Logan River.
Because the climatological data are not available in the Blacksmith Fork watershed, this thesis also provides a technique for using the available data from adjacent watersheds.
The Effect Of Hydrogen Fluoride On Light And Dark Products Of Carbon Dioxide Fixation In Plants, Cleon W. Ross
The Effect Of Hydrogen Fluoride On Light And Dark Products Of Carbon Dioxide Fixation In Plants, Cleon W. Ross
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Damage to vegetation caused by fluoride compounds has been reported for a large number of plant species. In recent years toxicity to plants caused by atmospheric fluorides has been the subject of studies by a number of laboratories. These studies have been primarily concerned with determining the extent of injury caused by fluorides, describing the symptoms which occur and attempting to correlate them with the amounts of the element in the tissue and with some environmental factors. Thomas (1951) has given a general review of these subjects. Attempts have been made to control fluoride damage by spraying the leaves with …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study of soil erodibility has become of paramount interest in the last few decades. The effects of soil erosion are serious and extensive and affect nearly all people.
In general, man can do little or nothing about the geologic erosion or natural erosion in which the processes of rock weathering and soil erosion gradually wear down the earth's surface. However, human disturbance of the natural conditions of the land surface often creates accelerated erosion. Fertility of eroded soil is usually reduced measurably and crop yields are lowered considerably as erosion removes seed soil nutrients and cover crops. Loss of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Utah chub is one of the most important non-game fish in Utah. It has a wide range, and occurs in every drainage in Utah. The Utah chub is not important economically as food fish nor is it of much value commercially. The sportsmen think of this species as trash and do not consider catching or consuming them. However, the Utah chub may be caught on hook and line more readily than many game species. The Utah chub in Scofield Reservoir have been caught by trolling, bait fishing and fly casting and furnish considerable sport when caught with a light …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Enzymes play a very important role during the ripening process of the cheese. Enzymes are important in producing the body, texture, and flavor of the cheese. The breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins by added enzymes into different end products during the ripening of the cheese aids the process and may reduce time. The characteristic flavors of different varieties of cheeses are influenced by enzyme action. Some enzyme like proteinases can be used to improve the body, texture, and the flavor of the cheddar cheese. Addition of these enzymes during cheddar cheese making may shorten the ripening period. In order …

A Survey Of The Use Of Standardized Tests In The Junior High Schools Of Weber County, Ashlaug J. Jackson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is evident from the literature reviewed that there is a need for better understanding and utilization of standardized test results. It seems that unless tests contribute to the learning process they are not justifiable. Merritt (12, p. 66) says the main objective of all endeavor is to promote learning. Ultimately, the worth of any activity carried on in the schools has to be judged by the contribution this activity makes toward the improvement of learning. Testing is no exception. In a broad sense, desirable learning has taken place when behavior has been changed in socially approved directions. Testing is …

Line-induced chlorosis is a nutritional disease affecting many fruit trees, berries, ornamental shrubs, and flowers in Utah and the western United States. In fact, this disease is of wide distribution on calcareous soils throughout the world. Lime-induced chlorosis has contributed to untold economic loss and has challenged the technical ingenuity of plant and soil scientists throughout the world. As yet the exact cause of chlorosis has not been determined; consequently, no permanent cures have been found.
The first symptoms of this disease are characterized by an interveinal yellowing of younger leaves, with the veins remaining green. In more severe cases …
A Physico-Chemical Study Of Weathering Products In The Payson Soil Series, Lowell A. Douglas
A Physico-Chemical Study Of Weathering Products In The Payson Soil Series, Lowell A. Douglas
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A knowledge of the clay minerals in a particular soil series would aid in the characterization and classification of that soil. The physical and chemical properties of a soil are largely controlled by the properties of the clay minerals in the soil.
This thesis presents the results of a study of the weathering products in a calcareous soil, with a B horizon high in clay content, attempting to determine if the clay accumulation is a product of in situ weathering. It was decided to study soil profiles from within the Bonneville Basin, since a fair estimate of time of in …
A Manometric Method For The Determination Of Soil Carbonates In The Field, N. A. Polyzopoulos
A Manometric Method For The Determination Of Soil Carbonates In The Field, N. A. Polyzopoulos
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In soil survey work the method now generally used to evaluate the carbonate content of the soil in the field is to observe the amount of effervescence that takes place when the soil reacts with dilute acid. The four degrees of effervescence usually recognized are designated by the symbols eo, e, es, ev and correspond roughly to a lime content of 0-0.5, 0.5-3, 3-15, and above 15 per cent, respectively. This, or course, is a very rough estimate and therefore a method is needed for the quantitative determination of carbonates in the field with a fair degree of accuracy. If …
The Inhibition Of Germination Caused By The Lemma And Palea On Phalaris Arundinacea Seed, Nard Vee Allen
The Inhibition Of Germination Caused By The Lemma And Palea On Phalaris Arundinacea Seed, Nard Vee Allen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) is adapted to low wet lands and survives flooding and periods of drought. Much of the valley bottom land of Utah is flooded during part of the year, yet some of this land is very dry late in the summer. This grass could become an important forage for Utah's valley bottom lands if stand establishment could be assured. Low germination percentages and long germination periods under field conditions often result in poor stands.
In most cases quick uniform germination is a decided advantage in establishing stands. Fall plantings have usually been more successful than …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the limiting factors associated with seed production of alfalfa and certain clovers is a small jet-black wasp commonly known as the clover seed chalcid, Bruchophagus gibbus (Boheman). In alfalfa seed producing areas this insect is often referred to as the alfalfa seed chalcid or the alfalfa seed chalcis-fly. In local areas of Utah, farmers often refer to this insect as simply "the fly."

Regenerating Aspen By Suckering In The Southwest, Merylyn M. Larson
Aspen Bibliography
Although seeding is necessary for the spread of aspen into new localities, suckering (sprouting from adventitious buds on the roots) is the chief means of reproduction in established stands. Suckering can usually be induced by reducing or eliminating the aspen overstory. 2
