Transition Into Parenthood And The Effects Of Childbirth Education, Margaret B. Haycock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Attitudes of primiparous women toward childbirth were studied longitudinally as they varied with the intervention of childbirth education classes before delivery; and as they varied with the experience of labor and deli very and having a baby in the home after delivery. An anxiety scale was used measuring anxiety toward labor, delivery, the parenthood role, and stress on the marriage relationship. Measurement on the anxiety scale was taken prior to childbirth education when primiparous mothers ranged from 4 months to 7-1/2 months gestation. Measurement II on the anxiety scale was taken after childbirth education, one month prior to delivery. Measurement …

Reading Abilities Of Third Grade Children As Influenced By Kindergarten Instruction, Diane Thomas May 1975

Reading Abilities Of Third Grade Children As Influenced By Kindergarten Instruction, Diane Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Literature indicates that in past years a controversy has arisen as to the proper time and methods to begin the instruction of reading to young children. Most recent research indicates that authorities do not advocate formalized instruction by which whole classes or groups of children participate in a given program. However, recent literature also indicates a trend toward structured and formalized reading by public school teaching staff.

While there is a great deal of research in the area of early reading, the research is not definitive. Consequently, a need remains for definitive research that can help in answering questions about …

A Comparative Study Of Mother's Education And Early Child Rearing Practices In A Southwestern Indian Pueblo, Sherry D. Remund

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem on which this study focused was the need to determine the manner and degree to which pluralistic values of the greater American Society are influencing family life and child rearing patterns of a Southwestern Indian Pueblo, The Southwestern Pueblo is not named for reasons of anonymity. The intent of the study was to determine the degree to which Southwestern Pueblo mothers have been affected by their education in a non-Indian culture as related to child rearing practices in the pre-school years.

The study tests the hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the early child rearing practices …

A Comparison Of Three Methods Used To Analyze Pronghorn Antelope Diets, Leonard J. Shandruk May 1975

A Comparison Of Three Methods Used To Analyze Pronghorn Antelope Diets, Leonard J. Shandruk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An increasing interest in fecal analysis as a method of determining diets of herbivores prompted research to determine if this method could be used successfully to determine diets of pronghorn antelope found in Utah's cold desert rangelands. In addition to fecal analysis, quantitative estimates of pronghorn diets were derived from rumen analysis and feeding site observations. Rumen samples were analyzed by three different methods: (1) microscopic, (2) gravimetric, and (3) point frame. In addition to field experiments, samples from a feeding trial with a diet of known composition were used to determine whether or not differential digestion of plant epidermis …

Stability Of Stream Communities Exposed To Underground Nuclear Tests On Amchitka, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Richard Ames Valdez

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A major bioenvironmental effect of The United States Atomic Energy Commission's Underground Nuclear Testing Program on Amchitka Island, Alaska was the decimation of stream communities by drilling muds from the device emplacement holes. These muds reached two of these streams 4 months and 2 years before the Milrow and Cannikin tests, respectively. Recolonization of fishes and macroinvertebrates in these small streams (Clevenger and White Alice Creeks) began 1 month after spill abatement.

Complete recovery of Dolly Varden in Clevenger Creek occurred less than 5 years after the spill. Of the other native fishes, pink salmon spawned 1 1/2 years after …

A computerized mathematical model has been developed to simulate the system hydrology and water-salinity (as indicated by seven major ions constituting the salt) of a river basin, in which irrigation is the major beneficial water user. The overall system simulation model consists of three submodels: (1) a general hydrologic submodel programmed on a hybrid computer; (2) a chemical submodel to predict the quality of percolated water through the soil profile; and (3) a biological transformation submodel in respect of microbial nitrogen transformations, which is utilized by the chemical submodel. Both the chemical and biological submodels are programmed on a digital …

Description And Research Study Of Four Effective Teaching Methods, Gail Ryan May 1975

Description And Research Study Of Four Effective Teaching Methods, Gail Ryan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

During my years in the public school system, I have felt that a basic deterrent to the child's personal and emotional growth has been the inability of educators to effectively communicate with children in the classroom. Gordon (1970, p. 298) states that teachers and other adults "lack the basic attitudes and skills to be effective training agents in an interpersonal relationship with a child or adolescent." Flanders (1971) feels that teachers, while behaviorally influencing children and determining the learning situation, actually have little knowledge about those methods of influence.

I am concerned with the need to train teachers to work …

Development Of Agricultural Cooperatives In Thailand, Wirote Manopimoke

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The seed of cooperatives was first brought to Thailand by Sir Bernard Hunter, the British banker, in 1914. Because of his suggestion , the first cooperative society was established in Phitsanulok Province in the northern part of Thailand, on February 26, 1916, along the lines of the Raiffeisen model, or what is known as the "village credit cooperative." The government at that time was still an absolute monarchy under the reign of King Rama VI. It desired, however, to relieve farmers from severe indebtedness and to enable them to expand their rice production, which was at that time becoming more …

The Effect Of Combination Companies On Electricity Rate Structures In The United States, Wirote Manopimoke

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In general, public policy in the United States has been directed to maintaining competition. The belief has been that competitive free enterprise economy is the best means toward a higher standard of living and the preservation of personal freedom. In many industries, however, competition is imperfect. The electric power and natural gas industries are such activities.

Speech Improvement Programs In Rural And Urban Utah Public Schools: Kindergarten, First And Second Grades, Linda B. Crozier

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Each year the public school speech therapist is confronted with large numbers of children having articulation problems. More often than not, the clinician is additionally faced with the task of selecting children with communication problems from among an extremely large population. By inspection, the list of children with articulation problems reveals a large percentage from the kindergarten, first and second grades who, if enrolled in a therapy program, would leave little time for children with problems in the upper grades.

The need for help with these articulation problems is felt almost universally by clinicians,Johnson (1967) indicated that as many as …

Recital Report, Robert Steven Call

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It was the purpose of the recital to afford the performer an opportunity of developing overall musicianship and gaining insight into the teaching of brass instruments through the preparation and performance of several pieces of varied musical styles.

The writer elected to perform on trombone, baritone horn, and tuba. Successful performances had been done on trombone and baritone horn prior to the preparation of the master's recital. However, the tuba was a new performance experience because serious study of the instrument had only covered about one year.

The writer was specifically concerned with the selection of literature suitable to the …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Irrigation plays a major role in Utah and other arid regions of the West. Canals transporting water from lakes, rivers and reservoires have converted millions of acres of marginal land to rich productive sites and are the lifeblood of western agriculture. These canals are common ingredient in the landscape and life styles of most communities of the state. Cache valley, Utah is one example of an area which has flourished with the use of irrigation canals diverted from the Logan River.

The growth of urban populations and demand for outdoor activities has created need for more local parks and recreation. …

Special Education And Pupil Personnel Services Offered By The Utah State Board Of Education, Mark J. Bankhead

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the United States responsibility for education is a function of the state, local school districts derive their authority from the state legislature (Graham, 1962). For many years, especially during the 19th century, the only legislative provision for the education of handicapped children was the limited support of state institutions and residential schools. Recent federal court decisions have substantiated the right of handicapped children to equal protection under the law, including an education, and made state departments of education "solely responsible for providing handicapped children with a free and public education appropriate to their individual capacities." (Abeson, 1972, p. 11) …

An Analysis Of The Program For Education Professions Development Act, Part E, Fellowship Students At Utah State University, Ronald Max Rees

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

From the time of the first school through the current schools of today, one of the greatest concerns of educators has been the development of curriculums. "Among the most important educational policies of schools are those pertaining to curriculum." (Kirst and Decker, 1972, p. 28) This concern has been echoed by many educators across the country including those at Utah State University. At Utah State the responsibility of the curriculum for the Education Professions Development Act, Part E, program (EPDA) belongs to the Business Education Department. The fiveyear old EPDA, Part E, program at Utah State University has been deeigned …

An Investigation Of Uintah High School Cooperative Education Students' Technical Job Performance As Viewed By Their Training Sponsors, Cleo Jane Riding

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In 1906 cooperative education was established by Dean Herman Schneider of the University of Cincinnati. Since that time legislation has been passed, such as the Vocational Act of 1963 and the Amendments of 1968, which have played an important part in the adoption of cooperative office education programs in the schools. Prior to 1963 there were approximately 450 programs, and in 1969-70 there were approximately 2,321 programs operating.

Douglas, Blanford, and Anderson, in their book Teaching Business Subjects state that "Cooperative education is a method of education that integrates learning experiences in the school with work experiences made available in …

An Administrative Plan For Extension Library Service In Utah, Dana Andrew Samples May 1975

An Administrative Plan For Extension Library Service In Utah, Dana Andrew Samples

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A free society that is information oriented and technologically complex requires a well informed, highly educate citizenry. The constant growth of knowledge further means that this educative process be a continuous, life-long endeavor. No longer can education be thought of as an entry point; instead, it must represent a constant evolutionary process throughout life.

A few universities long ago recognized the off campus extension of higher education as a legitimate public service responsibility. New York in 1891 and Wisconsin in 1906 made provision for extending the scope of the university to embrace a full range of adult educational needs and …

Facilitating Effective Communication Between Foreigners And Americans At Utah State University, Aruneeprabha Homsettee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As one of the foreign students in this country, I have had a lot of problems while studying here. For example , how should I express myself, how should I behave when going to an American party and participating in other traditional occasions such as Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. Also, how can I learn about Americans' activities and manners? Some of them I can solve by learning from others or by myself. Many Americans have trouble when communicating with foreigners. They try hard, but they often do not understand each other.

Information from both Americans and foreigners indicates that if …

Utah And School Age Parents, Willa C. Hurd May 1975

Utah And School Age Parents, Willa C. Hurd

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Background. As Dean of Women in a small high school for the past three years, I have been frustrated because of the fact that there was no program for married and/or pregnant students that would educationally aid them.

Night high school courses are not, in my opinion, "equal education; " I felt the need for a definite program. The school district is both legally and morally responsible to provide educational opportunities to these students .

Justification. In 1970 an estimated 200,000 American girls under 18 gave birth. Nearly two-thirds of the girls had married by the time of delivery (Pregnant …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As society changes, current educational systems need to be evaluated and upgraded. Methods and procedures of teaching become outdated with constant technological advances. Predictions of the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate, " ... more than 350,000 new clerical and related jobs will be added each year during the next decade."1 These projected workers will have to obtain training for their future careers. The business teacher has a responsibility to provide necessary training for students pursuing business careers.

How can these teachers prepare themselves to meet the needs of their students? An effective way for teachers to keep abreast of changes …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A review of recent articles indicates that the effectiveness of simulation on Vocational Education has been substantiated. Many programs have been used throughout the United States which point out the success of office simulation.

Utah began simulation by converting trailers into mobile modern offices. The first class was taught in June, 1968, with a migrant farm worker project. The program was called MOE (Mobile Office Education). Hanson and Stocker were involved in the development and teaching of this program. They explain their ideas about a successful and effective simulation program:

It is a real organization of students formed under the …

1. History Of The Development Of The Violin 2. Construction Of The Violin 3. Repairs Of The Violin String Instruments, Carl David Nyman

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The origin of all stringed instruments is lost in the midst of time, and despite the most patient and laborious research on the part of famous savants, no positive information has as yet been furnished regarding this point . Knowledge of the subject is more or less conjectural, and all that has been definitely established is the existence of the predecessors of the violin - the English crewth, a six stringed bowed instrument which is conspicuous for its rectangular shape, which is strongly reminiscent of the Greek kithara; the rebec, an instrument in the shape of an elongated pear having …

Tutorial Reading Programs In The Elementary School: A Survey, Judith P. Mitchell May 1975

Tutorial Reading Programs In The Elementary School: A Survey, Judith P. Mitchell

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In this complex and often confusing country, reading is viewed by many people as the most important skill a child can acquire during his school years. Success in school, of both children and teachers, particularly in the elementary grades, is often measured by children's success in learning how to read. Reading is the tool that unlocks most knowledge for children and adults alike. As a person seeks employment the inability to read or the inability to read with facility greatly limits the opportunities.

Mechanical Desinewing Of Meat, Kamchorn Tantikarnjathep May 1975

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects of mechanical desinewing on yield, proximate analyses and connective tissue content of pork and beef have been examined and its influence on the appearance and palatability of cooked salami was evaluated. Mechanical desinewing removed approximately half of the connective tissue and reduced the tendency for formation of gelatin pockets in cooked salami. Yields from the desinewer ranged from 71 to 87 percent, however, cooking yield defined as cooked weight divided by uncooked weight from the desinewed salami were 6 to 7 percent higher than from the nondesinewed salami. For both the beef and pork there was no significant …
