Effect Of Zinc Nutriture And Contraceptive Steroid Injection On Body Composition Of Young Female Rats, Sang Ai Hahn

Forty-nine female rats initially weighing about 95 grams were used in this experiment to determine the effect of contraceptive hormones on body composition in zinc deficient and zinc supplemented rats. Four treatment groups were: 2 ppm of dietary zinc with daily contraceptive steroid injections, or with placebo injection, and 140 ppm of dietary zinc with contraceptive steroid injection or with placebo. The daily injected steroids consisted of 0.1ug of Ethynyl Estradiol and 0.1mg of Medroxyprogesterone in 0.1ml of corn oil. Non-hormone treated groups received 0.1ml of plain corn oil. An automated continuous flow analysis for milk protein utilizing ultraviolet spectroscopy resulted in a correlation coefficient of 0.972 and a standard estimate of error of 0.082 percent protein when 30 samples were compared with the acid orange 12 dye binding method. Milk was solubilized in 95-105 volumes of acetic acid using the Technicon Auto Analyzer II and measured for absorbance at 274 nanometers. No deviation from the standard method due to mastitis and varying milk fat concentration was observed. A theoretical model indicated a possible standard estimate of error 0.059 percent protein due to inter- and intra-breed variation in milk …

A Wescor Vapor Pressure Osmometer measured the osmolality of a solution by sensing the vapor pressure above the solution in a closed chamber. The instrument sensing element comprised a precision thermocouple which measured the dew point temperature depression, a function of the water vapor pressure in the chamber. It used approximately 5-7 microliter samples to saturate a 0.64 cm filter paper disc. The instrument fixed a milliosmolal digital reading and signaled test completion in 110 seconds. Eleven strains of lactic cultures were used to determine their effectiveness in different bulk culture media for the manufacture of Cottage cheese. The acid phosphate-treated whey-based medium (APWM) made from Cottage cheese whey was found to be as effective as sweet phosphate-treated whey-based medium (PWM) made from Swiss cheese whey in supporting the development of lactic cultures. The relative activity of cultures in APWM with pH control was higher than phage inhibitory medium and nonfat dry milk without pH control. Compatibility of mixed cultures of Streptococcus lactis and Streptococcus cremoris were studied by the phage tracer technique in 10% nonfat dry milk and a whey-based phage inhibitory medium. Methods of membrane dialysis and differential enumeration were tried and abandoned. Dominance occurred in nonfat dry milk and in the whey-based medium during a continuous fermentation period within a pH range 6.8 to 5.2. The dominance pattern of two-strain combinations in 10% nonfat dry milk was different from that in the whey-based media. This study was a follow-up of the Christiansen study which was completed in 1967. Dr. Christiansen's 26 subjects ranged in age from 33 to 60 years. Ten were designated as controls and the other 16 were placed on a high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) diet for a period of 26 weeks.

The purpose of doing a follow-up was to determine what effect the study had on present dietary patterns, serum lipid levels and rate of erythrocyte hemolysis.

The metachromatic agar-diffusion test of Lachica, Hoeprich, and Genigeorgis (1971) was modified by adding 17 ml of the agar medium to a 100 by 15 mm plastic petri dish, using 5 µl samples and 3 mm wells. The test detected 0.5 ng/ml of thermonuclease in 3 hr at 37 C. This was equivalent to 106 to 107 cells/ml of Staphylococcus aureus strains 196 E, 14458, and 19095 grown in Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth. The test sensitivity was decreased ten fold in raw and pasteurized milk.

The Technicon OSCC II was evaluated for application in dairy herd improvement central laboratories. Dilution using a Fisher Autodiluter made sample preparation for assay less time consuming and more convenient and resulted in the same accuracy as with the manual syringe technique.

Sample storage and the presence of a potassium dichromate preservative tablet had little effect on somatic cell count when tested within two days at room temperatures (20-23 C) or within four days at refrigeration temperatures (4-7 C). The preservative tablet caused an average increase of 14,000 cells/ml. The average cell count dropped 26 percent following two days at …

To assess the effects of gamma radiation at low doses, spores of Penicillium expansum NRRL 971 and Penicillium patulum NRRL 989 were exposed to doses of 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 krads. The amount of patulin for each culture was quantitatively determined and growth at each dose was evaluated. The results showed a 31% increase in the amount of patulin synthesis after a dose of 150 krads for Penicillium expansum. At 200 krads, both fungi showed low levels of patulin production and inhibited growth.

Anthocyanin pigments of sour cherry (prunus cerasus L., cultivar Montmorency) fruit were studied by spectrophotometry, paper and two-dimensional thin layer chromatography and disc electrophoretic method. Mature and wholesome fresh sour cherries and freeze-dried compressed sour cherries stored at 70 F and 100 F for 6 months were used.

A total of seven anthocyanin pigments were observed in both paper and thin layer chromatograms of the fresh and freeze-dried compressed samples stored for O month whereas the freeze-dried compressed samples stored at 70 F and 100 F for 6 months showed the retention of three to six pigments. Forty-three and 54 Ferruginous hawk (Buteo regalis) pairs were found occupying territories in northern Utah and southeastern Idaho during 1972 and 1973, respectively. Of these 38 and 27 nesting pairs laid eggs. Nesting success was 77.1 percent in 1972 and 74.6 percent in 1973. for successful nests, an average of 2.9 and 2.6 young hatched and 2.7 and 2.3 young fledged during the respective years. This population is reproductively comparable to others in Utah and Colorado. Analysis of prey items collected from the nests indicated that black-tailed jack-rabbits (Lepus californicus) constitute 86 percent of the biomass …

student achievement and attitude changes toward science resulting from three different approaches used in teaching introductory general education biology at Diablo Valley Community College in Pleasant Hill, California, were compared. The three teaching approaches used were the lecture-only, lecture - laboratory and lecture-recitation.

The sample was composed of 129 students enrolled in Biology 101 and 102 at Diablo Valley Community College during fall semester 1974-75. Forty-three students comprised the control group taught by the lecture-only method. Forty-three students comprised the experimental group taught by the lecture-laboratory method. Aboveground biomass, litter biomass and root biomass of a crested wheatrgrass (Agropyron desertorum [Fisch.] Schult.) dominated community were inventoried in the fall of 1971, 1972, and 1973. In addition, energy, nitrogen, fats and ash determinations were made on the materials collected in 1972 and 1973.

The sampling methods used generated data sufficiently precise to detect significant differences (α = .10) among biomass components among years. The chemical contents of the components were similar in the fall of 1972 and the fall of 1973 despite the large differences in growing season precipitation.

McCarthy's Draw-A-Child test was administered to 20 lower class and 20 middle class four-year-old children matched for age and sex. The purpose of the test was to find if socioeconomic class and sex differences effected the child's ability to draw a same sex figure. Analysis of results supported the theory that girls do better than boys. Analysis of socioeconomic differences suggests that lower-class children do not have the ability to draw as well as middle class children but the difference is not significant at the .05 level. Troops, requested by the federal government for the security during the Civil War of the overland mail, telegraph, and emigrant routes, were provided by California for those portions of the routes which crossed the territories of Utah and Nevada. A force, never exceeding 1,200 in strength, commanded by Patrick Edward Connor, was assigned a geographic responsibility, the Military District of Utah.

The hypothesis that migration from rural areas of declining population is selective of young, well-educated, achievement-oriented persons was tested on a cohort of graduating seniors from Star Valley (Wyoming) High School.

The 132 living members of the senior classes of 1946 and 1947 served as the population of study. The cohort approach was used to control such variables as age, high school education, rural area of origin and socio- cultural background.

The objective of this study was to field-test the "microenvironment concept" of avian botulism epizootiology. The "microenvironment concept" hypothesizes that aquatic invertebrate carcasses may serve both as a substrate for toxin production by Clostridium botulinum type C in nature and as a vehicle for toxin transmission to waterbirds. This concept has become the generally accepted, but inadequately tested, working hypothesis of type C botulism epizootiology.

Production functions were generated for dry matter and grain yields of corn, A continuous variable plot design replicated four times was established in the spring of 1974 in Vernal, Utah. Each replication included ten salt treatments and twenty irrigation levels. The salt treatments resulted in an average root zone salinity ranging from 2 . 7 to 14.9 mmhos/cm. Irrigation levels ranged from 4.2 to 45.0cm of water applied. Dry matter (Kg/ha) yield showed an 83 percent reduction over the range of salt applied and a 52 percent reduction over the range of water applied. Grain yield declined 96 and 64 …

The opinions of male students at Logan Junior High School and their parents were analyzed to determine attitudes toward physical education and the existing physical education program at the school. The data was obtained by the use of a questionnaire given to 458 boys and their parents.

Students of all three grades and the parents of all three classes indicated a positive attitude toward physical education and also toward the existing physical education program at Logan Junior High School. The purpose of this study is to examine a sample of former Utah apprentices who either completed or dropped out of a registered apprenticeship program during the five-year period from 1969 to 1974. Comparisons were made between the dropouts and completers in order to determine how the two groups differed and what factors influenced their decisions to complete or cancel their indentures.

Uinta ground squirrels (Spermophilus armatus) were instrumented with ECG radio-transmitters. Heart rate and oxygen consumption were monitored for one hour at ambient temperatures above, within and below the thermoneutral zone. These measures were made at predetermined intervals throughout the active season of squirrels to determine if the heart rate-oxygen consumption relationship was a stable linear regression within and between squirrels during this period. Heart rate and oxygen consumption were also monitored for squirrels exposed to artificial and natural stressors. These squirrels were then released in an outdoor enclosure. The purpose of this study was to analyze the word processing procedures in the offices of the President and Provost at Utah State University. Seven secretaries participated in the survey by completing a questionnaire and keeping a record of all typing and nontyping tasks performed during two nonconsecutive weeks.

A combined total of 9035 lines (average 12 words per line) of typing was completed by all workers. Ninety-nine percent of the typing was classified as text in format and originated in one of several ways including: copy type, shorthand, revision, self composition, machine dictation, and longhand.

Chick feeding tests were conducted to study the effects of dietary imbalances among the three branched chain amino acids on growth rate. All diets fed in these tests contained about 18% protein. Purpose and Procedures

The purpose of this paper was to construct and validate an instrument which could effectively identify students enrolled in the elementary teacher training program at Utah State University whose mathematical competency equals or exceeds the standard for completion of the required math content courses prior to taking those courses. It was the hope of the writer that such students would be allowed to waive those courses and substitute courses representing areas of greater need for the individual student.
