High-power semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are a promising alternative to erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), which are traditionally used for free-space optical communication (FSO). Here, we characterize the performance of a watt-class 1550 nm AuraTM SOA for FSO applications. We demonstrate an open eye diagram for 26.8 dBm SOA output power using the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) tranche 1 protocol. We then show that despite some waveform distortions, frame error rates of 3.9 x 10-4 are achieved for -28 dBm of received optical power with no forward error correction (FEC). Parameters of importance to optical communications such as signal …
Calibration And Systems Engineering Collaboration, John Wilson
Calibration And Systems Engineering Collaboration, John Wilson
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
Systems engineering and calibration engineering are critical to the efficient development, production, and operation of complex systems. Systems engineering provides the framework for the system lifecycle, ensuring stakeholder needs are met through integrated solutions. Calibration engineering ensures the accuracy, reliability, traceability of measurement, and compliance with standards. Coordination between system engineering and calibration ensures that instrumentation, control systems, and system performance are enabled. As the lifecycle coordinator, systems engineering relies on calibration engineers to reduce risks, optimize development, and ensure operational success.
However, the relationship between these disciplines is often poorly coordinated, as noted in tabletop discussions at CalCon 2024. …

Feasibility Of Producing Non-Structural Wood Products Using Trembling Aspen Lumber, Mengyuan Zhang
Aspen Bibliography
Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) is abundant in Canada but underutilized in non-structural solid wood products. This study was aimed at evaluating the feasibility of using aspen lumber to produce flooring, moulding, and siding. The shrinkage, surface roughness, and wettability of aspen wood were tested. The surface hardness, screw withdrawal resistance, colour change, and dimensional stability of there products fabricated were examined. The wood yield of each product was analyzed. It was found that aspen showed superior machinability and wettability to silver maple and yellow poplar. Aspen flooring had a Brinell hardness of 13.47 MPa, 60% lower than silver maple. …

13. Mentorship Matters: Documenting The Unseen Impact Of Instructor-Student Relationships, Jeff Spears, Amanda Deliman, Hannah Mae Lewis, Jim Lamuth, Kim Hales
Documenting Teaching Excellence
This chapter explores the critical yet often unrecognized role of documenting instructor mentorship as a core component of teaching excellence in higher education. Mentorship encompasses a range of instructor-to-student interactions, including academic guidance, psychosocial support, research support (graduate and undergraduate), and career exploration for students (DeAngelo, Mason, & Winters, 2016; Thiry & Laursen, 2011). Despite its importance, mentorship is rarely documented comprehensively in teaching documentation portfolios (Ocobock et al., 2022). By systematically capturing the multifaceted impacts of mentorship, instructors enhance their teaching portfolio and contribute to the broader discourse on teaching excellence. This chapter aims to empower instructors to demonstrate …

Documenting Teaching Excellence
College instructors today face mounting pressure to document and demonstrate teaching excellence, but too often they confront ambiguous requirements disconnected from teaching values. However, what if the future of scholarly teaching depended on making instructors feel visible, validated, and valued in how their teaching is documented and shared? In the current climate, where burnout and disconnection run high, instructors need more than compliance checklists, they need structures of support that affirm their professional identity and invite them into a community of inquiry to support scholarly teaching.

15. Documenting Teaching Excellence: Applying Universal Design For Learning (Udl) In Communication Courses, Shihua Brazill
Documenting Teaching Excellence
As a professor in communications, I know firsthand the challenges and rewards of teaching diverse students in courses such as Presenting Technical Information, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, and Intercultural Communication. These courses demand not only mastery of content but also the ability of students at varying levels of comfort and expertise to communicate effectively using a variety of media. My approach to teaching has been heavily influenced by the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, which I have found to be an invaluable tool for creating inclusive, engaging, and dynamic learning environments. UDL has become essential to my pedagogy because …

16. Confronting "I Just Don't Have Time": An Argument For Seeking And Documenting Professional Learning, Sharon Lyman, Karin Dejonge-Kannan
Documenting Teaching Excellence
We confess our teaching is not always exemplary and our students often struggle to learn. We argue that intentionally pursuing professional learning is the only way to improve our teaching, and that documenting this learning is imperative when we make the case for teaching excellence. This chapter will examine the common lament of “I just don’t have time” for professional learning, followed by a discussion of how to exchange this self-sabotaging notion for a self-sustaining alternative, and a description of the benefits of documenting professional growth. The aim of this chapter is three-fold: to argue that “I just don’t have …

Documenting Teaching Excellence
Higher education has long pursued excellence in its core pillars: research, service, and teaching. Yet, public trust in higher education is at an all-time low. In 2024, nearly 1 in 3 Americans reported little to no confidence in higher education (Nietzel, 2024). Another survey revealed that 1 in 2 Americans think a college degree is less important now for getting a well-paying job compared to 20 years ago (Pew Research Center, 2024). Individual faculty continue to secure tenure through demonstrated teaching excellence, yet higher education struggles to convince the American public of its effectiveness. Why does this discrepancy exist?

Open Educational Resources For and As Assessment
The high cost of course materials is a barrier for many students, and traditional assessments often fail to inspire engagement. To address these challenges, NC State University Libraries promotes open course materials and open-enabled practices. Since 2014, the Alt-Textbook Project has helped faculty incorporate Open Educational Resources (OER) into their syllabi, reducing textbook costs and supporting innovative educational approaches. This effort was enhanced with the Open Pedagogy Incubator, a multi- semester program bringing together librarians and interdisciplinary faculty to redesign courses around open- pedagogical practices. Dr. McKenney, an incubator participant, redesigned her advanced undergraduate course on Applied Ecology (AEC 400) …

5. Student As Creator + Curator: Transformative Oer Pedagogy Through Student Research In Excel, Morgan Barker
Open Educational Resources For and As Assessment
This chapter considers ways that basic student research can act as a transformative OER pedagogy. The author examines student co-created lessons and assesses an open pedagogy design model utilized in California Community College Excel courses over the last 10 years. While Excel is a valued academic and job-oriented skill, many students find that spreadsheets are not engaging nor the primary focus in most courses. It is through this design model that students are encouraged to curate “micro” lessons for fellow students, acting as active curators rather than passive learners. The concepts thoughtfully encourage students to have agency/ hope, develop advocacy …

For many universities, student evaluations of teaching (SETs) are synonymous with teaching evaluation. Universities typically administer surveys to students at the end of the semester, year after year, to solicit evaluations of their instructors’ teaching. Instructors report their scores as evidence of their teaching excellence for formal evaluations. Different academic units review these scores while making consequential decisions, such as raises or promotions. For better or worse, SETs are deeply embedded within the academic evaluation system.

Documenting Teaching Excellence
The scholarly conversation surrounding excellence in teaching, including defining and documenting excellence, is both robust and ongoing in the academic literature across disciplines. My own experience as a teacher-scholar, program director, department chair, and faculty developer has demonstrated that often, one of the most significant challenges instructors face during required reviews is making their teaching—and, in particular, their excellence in teaching—visible and tangible to colleagues outside of their classroom spaces, including fully articulating and demonstrating the why and how of that teaching. Although some institutions or individual units (i.e., departments or programs) may provide explicit descriptions of and expectations for …

Documenting Teaching Excellence
Administrators at the department, college, or institutional level are well positioned to support instructor development. Department heads, who typically have responsibility for routine performance reviews, play a role in tenure and promotion decision making processes, and have a line of sight on data related to instructional performance, can and should play a particularly impactful role. Serving as a department head, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and on a university level tenure and promotion committee gave me diverse perspectives on what effective teaching documentation looks like. Moreover, it shaped how I mentored, offered counsel, or approached conversations about teaching effectiveness, whether …

Teaching excellence is a defining characteristic and ongoing challenge at small liberal arts institutions, where instructor independence and mission-driven education converge. Defining and measuring it in such contexts involves navigating instructor autonomy, institutional mission, administrative oversight, and accreditation requirements. This chapter presents a case-based approach to addressing these challenges at Brescia University, a small liberal arts school in Owensboro, KY. We offer an example of an implementable solution that fosters and documents teaching excellence while aligning with both generally accepted standards and the university’s mission. Additionally, we model a collaborative development process between the offices of the Academic Dean and …

Defining what constitutes teaching excellence is a crucial focus for faculty development to create deep learning opportunities in our classrooms and ensure our students’ success. However, establishing a single definition is challenging to standardize and quantify. We recognize outstanding teaching when we see and experience it — we all know the faculty members who spark curiosity, foster deep learning, and create memorable experiences for our students. Yet, how do we assess something so complex, nuanced, and profoundly influential? Excellent teaching varies based on the institution, the field, the context, the content, and the demographics of the students in a course. …

Faculty voice, administrator frustration, low student response rates, and stalled reform efforts to enact substantive changes to how the University of Missouri (MU) evaluated teaching fueled the desire on campus to find a better way. In 2019, MU began a journey away from an overemphasis of a single item on student course evaluations to a constituent-informed, evidence-based, multi-measure system to evaluate and document teaching quality. By sparking a campus-wide conversation and initiative, a new model of effective and inclusive teaching was created that led to new instruments, all aligned to a framework that is proving useful in our overall mission …
