Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Student Research
Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a neuroinvasive and neurovirulent orthoflavivirus, can be prevented in humans with the SA14-14-2 vaccine, a live-attenuated version derived from the wild-type SA14 strain. To determine the viral factors responsible for the differences in pathogenicity between SA14 and SA14-14-2, we initially established a reverse genetics system that includes a pair of full-length infectious cDNAs for both strains. Using this cDNA pair, we then systematically exchanged genomic regions between SA14 and SA14-14-2 to generate 20 chimeric viruses and evaluated their replication capability in cell culture and their pathogenic potential in …

Selectivity Of Invasive Species Suppression Efforts Influences Control Efficacy, Rae Fadlovich, Kevin Landom, Timothy E. Walsworth
Selectivity Of Invasive Species Suppression Efforts Influences Control Efficacy, Rae Fadlovich, Kevin Landom, Timothy E. Walsworth
Watershed Sciences Student Research
- Highly fecund invaders and size-selective suppression efforts often limit the effectiveness of invasive species control programs, as compensatory processes can allow suppressed populations to recover. While population models have long explored how demographic characteristics impact management feasibility, there is a growing need to evaluate how the selectivity of suppression efforts might impact the long-term feasibility of control.
- We use a simulation framework that integrates age-based selectivity to evaluate the effect of increasing the range of ages selected for during harvest-based invasive species control. We applied this approach to common carp in Utah Lake, the location of one of the world's …

Development Of Interface-Specific Two-Dimensional Vibrational-Electronic (I2d-Ve) Spectroscopy For Vibronic Couplings At Interfaces, Yuqin Qian, Zhi-Chao Huang-Fu, Jesse B. Brown, Yi Rao
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Bulk 2D electronic–vibrational (2D-EV) and 2D vibrational–electronic spectroscopies (2D-VE) were previously developed to correlate the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom simultaneously, which allow for the study of couplings between electronic and vibrational transitions in photo-chemical systems. Such bulk-dominated methods have been used to extensively study molecular systems, providing unique information such as coherence sensitivity, molecular configurations, enhanced resolution, and correlated states and their dynamics. However, the analogy of interfacial 2D spectroscopy has fallen behind. Our recent work presented interface-specific 2D-EV spectroscopy (i2D-EV). In this work, we develop interface-specific two-dimensional vibrational–electronic spectroscopy (i2D-VE). The fourth-order spectroscopy is based on a …

Aim: Increasing aridity has driven widespread synchronous fire occurrence in recent decades across North America. The lack of historical (pre-1880) fire records limits our ability to understand long-term continental fire-climate dynamics. The goal of this study is to use tree-ring reconstructions to determine the relationships between spatiotemporal patterns in historical climate and widespread fire occurrence in North American forests, and whether they are stable through time. This information will address a major knowledge gap required to inform projections of future fire.
Location: North American Forests.
Time Period: 1750–1880 CE.
Major Taxa Studied: Trees.
Methods: We applied regionalisation methods to tree-ring …

This report focuses on seven water quality measurements taken at 43 different depths on the Bear Lake for the months of June - November in the years 2018 - 2023. These measurements create a high-dimensional dataset on which we apply state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) techniques to look for low-dimensional structure in the data. A similar effort was made for weather measurements taken near the lake. Our analysis revealed that water quality measurements tend to cluster (i.e., group together) by year, while weather measurements tend to cluster by time of the year. This suggests that the structure observed in the water …

Evaluation Of Stability And Controllability Of The Multiple Trim Solutions For A Bio-Inspired Rotating Empennage Fighter Aircraft, Benjamin C. Moulton, Christian R. Bolander, Douglas F. Hunsaker
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
Aircraft with non-traditional actuators tend to have multiple or infinite trim solutions for a single flight condition. For a given flight condition the bio-inspired rotating empennage fighter aircraft has multiple distinct trim solutions with varying tail rotation angles. In the present work these trim solutions are evaluated from various perspectives including: minimum drag, dynamic stability, controllability, and degree of controllability. The results of these analyses can be used to further constrain a trim solver routine such that a trim solution is found meeting a desired criterion. The purpose of the present paper is to evaluate the multiple trim solutions for …

Effect Of Ph And Iron Chelate On The Growth Of Basil And Soybean In Soilless Media, Christian Baker, Bruce Bugbee
Effect Of Ph And Iron Chelate On The Growth Of Basil And Soybean In Soilless Media, Christian Baker, Bruce Bugbee
Nutrients
Iron (Fe) deficiencies are common in alkaline root zones and can cause chlorosis and reduce growth. The most common approach to prevent deficiency is using synthetic chelates that keep iron in solution at high pH. Here we report the effects of pH and chelate type on the development of chlorosis and biomass in soybeans and basil. We grew the plants at a pH ranging from 6.0-7.8. Fe was chelated with either a less expensive EDTA chelate or a more expensive EDDHA chelate. There was no significant difference between chelates at pH 6.0 in either soybeans or basil. In soybeans, there …

Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)
Human relocation from one place to another is not new.1 People move within or beyond borders for short or long periods, either temporarily or permanently, and they factor multiple internal and external issues into their migration decisions. Along with economic, political, social, and demographic drivers, 2,3 people may choose to migrate because of deterioration in their living and working environments.

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
Like many academic libraries, Utah State University Libraries have had a long and complex relationship with our integrated library systems (ILS). After migrating to SirsiDynix’s Symphony ILS from their older Horizon system in 2009, the Libraries moved to Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s Sierra platform in 2012. These back-to-back migrations not only created frustration and fatigue amongst library staff, the decision-making processes that led to the migrations were also flawed and lacked genuine staff involvement. This resulted in problems during the implementation stage, such as workloads being inadvertently shifted from one unit to another. Understandably, this bred some long-standing resentment towards the …

Utah People And Environment Poll 2024/25 Executive Report, Alex Theophilus, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad
Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)
Utah's people and environment are currently experiencing significant changes as the population continues to grow, droughts and flooding pose threats to agriculture, air quality leads to health concerns, energy needs rise, and public lands see increased use. Action is needed to address these changes, especially given how rapidly they are occurring. Political leaders, environmental organizations, Tribal Nations, and universities play a critical role in ensuring Utah’s environment, economy, workforce, and underserved communities have a sustainable path forward. Understanding residents’ views, values, and concerns can help better craft the policy, inform infrastructure, and identify the services needed to do so. With …

Comparison Of Co-Located Mid-Latitude Sporadic E And Simone Wind Observations, Ivana Molina, Kenneth Obenberger, Jorge Chau, Matthias Clahsen
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
Sporadic E are localized layers of enhanced metallic ionization that form in the E region of the ionosphere (Mathews, 1998). They are usually observed between 95 and 120 km altitude with a thickness in altitude ranging from ~100 m to a few kilometers. Studying these layers is important, as their characteristics and variability impact the propagation of HF radio waves. At mid-latitudes, the generation of sporadic E is most often explained by the wind shear theory, where these layers form due to the convergence of ions generated by vertical shears in the horizontal components of the neutral wind. The primary …

Design to make licensing and launch easy
- Sometimes the most innovative or elegant solution isn’t the best one
- The less you have to prove, the better
- Don’t use novel materials
- Don’t use novel methods
Example: 3D printing is cool and reduces part count because you can design otherwise unmachinable parts
- Now you have to test, analyze, and prove to everyone that your part won’t fail
- If you machined the parts from AL 6061-T6 and bolted them together with stainless steel fasteners, nobody would have looked twice
