Pharmacological And Behavioral Treatments For Migraine Headaches: A Meta-Analytic Review, Kristi Lowe Stewart
Pharmacological And Behavioral Treatments For Migraine Headaches: A Meta-Analytic Review, Kristi Lowe Stewart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Migraine headache is a painful and often serious problem in the United States. There are many prophylactic pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments available for migraine headaches. However, choosing between them can be difficult for individuals and treatment providers alike. The primary literature regarding the effectiveness of pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments is quite dense. More than 191 primary studies were identified as providing information about the effectiveness of one or more treatments for migraine headaches. Of these, 82 articles were retained for meta-analyses on six prophylactic treatments for migraine: propranolol, flunarizine, divalproex sodium, thermal biofeedback, relaxation treatments, and combined treatments. These results …
Risk Factors For Selected Health-Related Behaviors Among American Indian Adolescents: A Longitudinal Study, Amy Jo Williams
Risk Factors For Selected Health-Related Behaviors Among American Indian Adolescents: A Longitudinal Study, Amy Jo Williams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Suicide and accidents are the leading causes of death among American Indian (AI) adolescents. Engaging in health-compromising behaviors (HCB) is higher among AI youth than among multicultural, national samples of adolescents. These HCBs include: smoking, drinking alcohol, drug use, and delinquency. Studies that identify legitimate predictors of these behaviors among AI adolescents are needed to guide research and interventions.
Primary socialization theory (PST) suggests that peer groups, family, and school are the only areas where adolescents are directly taught to accept or reject deviant or normative behavior. Gateway theory indicates that use of certain drugs by adolescents, such as cigarettes …
Remote Sensing Of Sagebrush Community Structural Patterns Across Scales, Lisa A. Langs
Remote Sensing Of Sagebrush Community Structural Patterns Across Scales, Lisa A. Langs
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Throughout the Intermountain West there has been a substantial reduction in both the quantity and quality of sagebrush ecosystems. To assist current range management objectives, numerous efforts have been made to classify and map sagebrush communities using remotely sensed data. However, the amount of detail provided by these broad-scale mapping projects is often limited. This research evaluated the ability of a suite of airborne and satellite imagery to detect sagebrush community structural attributes, specifically percent canopy cover, live cover, density, size-vigor, and spatial arrangement of shrubs. Field data was collected at Camp Williams National Guard Training Facility near Bluffdale, Utah, …
Cougar Exploitation Levels In Utah: Implications For Demographic Structure, Metapopulation Dynamics, And Population Recovery, David C. Stoner
Cougar Exploitation Levels In Utah: Implications For Demographic Structure, Metapopulation Dynamics, And Population Recovery, David C. Stoner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Presently, eleven western states and two Canadian provinces utilize sport hunting as the primary mechanism for managing cougar (Puma concolor) populations. However, the impacts of sustained harvest on population dynamics and demographic structure arc not well understood. Additionally, the lack of cost-effective enumeration techniques and strongly conflicting societal values complicate effective management of this species. Given these concerns, the primary goals of this study were (I) to determine the effects of sustained harvest on cougar populations, and (2) estimate the level and extent of cougar harvest statewide.
I monitored cougar populations on Monroe Mountain in south-central Utah, and …
A Longitudinal Analysis Of Socioeconomic Differences In Obesity And Weight Change During The Early Adult Years, Young-Taek Kim
A Longitudinal Analysis Of Socioeconomic Differences In Obesity And Weight Change During The Early Adult Years, Young-Taek Kim
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in American society. However, not enough attention has been given to weight change by temporal and dynamic detailed social characteristics, controlled for unobserved heterogeneities nested in county and state. Using the National Longitudinal Survey Youth (NLSY79), this study examined weight change and its development into unhealthy conditions like being overweight or obese, in relation to change in social characteristics including life course events. This study also examined the social characteristics of remaining at a normal weight through all time intervals over a 19-year period. Using hierarchical linear multilevel analysis, this study found that changes in …

Nest Location And Nest Recognition In Two Solitary Bee Species Osmia Lignaria Say And Megachile Rotundata (F.) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), Christelle Guédot
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The visual and olfactory cues used in short-range orientation, specifically nest location and nest recognition, were studied in two solitary bee species Osmia lignaria Say and Megachile rotundata (F.) Osmia lignaria, the blue orchard bee, is an important pollinator of orchard crops, such as apples, cherries, and almonds; and M. rotundata, the alfalfa leafcutting bee, is used in commercial pollination of alfalfa. The general objective was to better understand how these two species locate their nests and how improving nest location could benefit crop pollination.
The use of proximal visual landmarks at the nesting site was investigated with …
Natural History, Demography, And Home Range Characteristics Of A Southern California Population Of Phrynosoma Mcallii Inhabiting Atypical Habitat, Kirk Setser
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Phrynosoma mcallii inhabiting a topographically complex, sparsely vegetated, "mudhill" terrain site in southern California in 1999 and 2000 had low mortality rates, and small clutch sizes compared to previous data from this species. Females likely produced a single clutch of eggs in each year. Although this population occurs near a heavily used OHV trail, I did not detect any mortality due to OHV use.
Lizards did not center home ranges on obvious habitat features. Lizards maintained smaller home ranges and exhibited greater range fidelity than did lizards at other sites in other years. Phrynosoma mcallii share many area-use characters with …
Feeding Behavior Of Sheep In Relation To Kinetics Of Sagebrush Monoterpenes: Implications For Landscape Biodiversity, Luthando E. Dziba
Feeding Behavior Of Sheep In Relation To Kinetics Of Sagebrush Monoterpenes: Implications For Landscape Biodiversity, Luthando E. Dziba
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The sagebrush steppe is one of the most extensive vegetation types in the western US and an important habitat for wild and domestic herbivores. When sagebrush dominates, however, forage and habitat quality decline. Although sagebrush is nutritious, its forage value is reduced by terpenes. A better understanding of how terpenes limit intake is vital for increasing consumption of sagebrush and for enhancing and maintaining biodiversity in the sagebrush-steppe.
To better understand how terpenes in sagebrush limit intake, we studied feeding behavior of sheep in the field, influence of sagebrush monoterpenes on regulation of intake in pens, and the feeding behavior …
Host Shifts In Phytophagous Insects: A Mathematical Modeling Perspective, Meenakshi Venkataraman
Host Shifts In Phytophagous Insects: A Mathematical Modeling Perspective, Meenakshi Venkataraman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
I explored changes in predator-prey system stability with the addition of spatial heterogeneity in prey density dependent mortality. The results indicated that this addition led to greater stability for all prey spatial distributions if prey was aggregated or loosely aggregated. These results indicated prey spatial distribution was critical to population stability. I next explored whether predator emigration under the above conditions would lead to a host shift. I used Chesson and Murdoch's templates of host density independent (HDI) aggregation and host density dependent (HDD) aggregation in predators as the basis for my metapopulation models. I varied prey density dependent mortality …

The objective of this fact sheet is to help producers understand the nutrient loss and retention characteristics of different types of manure storage. The concentration of nutrients in manure storage facilities is important for planning land application activities. Nutrient concentration is usually the critical factor in determining the amount of manure to be spread per acre of land. Manure systems similar in type and management may have characteristically similar concentrations of manure nutrients.

Pooled And Individual Bycatch Quotas: Exploring Tradeoffs Between Observer Coverage Levels, Bycatch Frequency, Pool Size, And The Precision Of Bycatch Estimates, Landon S. Jensen, Joe Koebbe, Keith R. Criddle
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
The North Pacific Ocean is highly productive, hosting many of the world's largest groundfish populations and supporting a thriving fishing industry. Numerous regulations have been implemented to control the incidental take of non-target bycatch. Individual and Pooled Bycatch Quotas have recently been proposed as instruments that could further encourage the avoidance of such bycatch and increase enforceability of by catch caps at less-than-entire-fishery levels of operation. The recent advent of fishing cooperatives such as the Pacific Whiting Conservation Cooperative and the Pollock Conservation Cooperatives create an additional impetus for examining the characteristics of pool and vessel specific bycatch quotas. We …
The Equivalence Of Evolutionary Games And Distributed Monte Carlo Learning, Yuya Sasaki
The Equivalence Of Evolutionary Games And Distributed Monte Carlo Learning, Yuya Sasaki
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This paper presents a tight relationship between evolutionary game theory and distributed intelligence models. After reviewing some existing theories of replicator dynamics and distributed Monte Carlo learning, we make fonnulations and proofs of the equivalence between these two models. The relationship will be revealed not only from a theoretical viewpoint, but also by experimental simulations of the models by taking a simple symmetric zero-sum game as an example. As a consequence, it will be verified that seemingly chaotic macro dynamics generated by distributed micro-decisions can be explained with theoretical models.

A Bioeconomic Model Of The Great Salt Lake Watershed, David Finnoff, Arthur J. Caplan
A Bioeconomic Model Of The Great Salt Lake Watershed, David Finnoff, Arthur J. Caplan
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
We present a computable general equilibrium model of the interface between the Great Salt Lake (GSL) ecosystem and the regional economy that impacts the ecosystem. With respect to the ecosystem, the model treats the various representative species as net-energy maximizers and bases population dynamics on the period-by-period sizes of surplus net energy. Energy markets-where predators and prey exchange biomass-determine equilibrium energy prices. With respect to the regional economy, we model five production sectors (at the aggregate industry level)-brine cyst harvesters, the mineral-extraction industry, agriculture, recreation, and a composite-good industry-as well as the household sector. By performing dynamic simulations of the …
