A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis
A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis
Publications
In the long march from manual training, the subject which today we call technology education has always had to contend with the question of its legitimacy as valid school knowledge. In this regard, it shares a similar history of struggle with other subjects whose initial entry into the curriculum was based on a utilitarian rather than an academic rationale. Goodson (1983) documents such cases (e.g. geography and biology) showing how in their struggle for acceptance, the primary strategy of advocates was to try to enhance the academic bona fides of their subject. He explained that utilitarian knowledge is associated with …

I am very glad this book was written, and equally pleased to have read it. But having done so, I am not sure I would buy it. I will use this review to explore the seeming contradiction between my enthusiasm and ambivalence. The book focuses on the regional conflict over the management of federally-managed forests in the Pacific Northwest Region of the United States. The controversy played out predominantly from 1988–1996, and the book reports the results of research undertaken from 1992–1996. The research is ethnographic, with the major data drawn from participant observation of events and from a series …
Once Upon A Virus: Aids Legends And Vernacular Risk Perception, Diane E. Goldstein
Once Upon A Virus: Aids Legends And Vernacular Risk Perception, Diane E. Goldstein
All USU Press Publications
Once Upon a Virus explores how contemporary, or "urban," legends are indicators of culturally complex attitudes toward health and illness. Tracing the rich tradition of AIDS legends in relation to current scholarship on belief, Diane Goldstein shows how such stories not only articulate widespread perceptions of risk, health care, and health policy, they also influence official and scientific approaches to the disease and its management. Notions that appear in narratives of who gets AIDS, how and why, are indicators of broad issues involving health beliefs, concerns, and needs.

Battle At The Bridge: Using Participatory Approaches To Develop Community Researchers In Ecological Management, Jonathan Long, Delbin Endfield, Candy Lupe, Mae Burnette
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Land-based communities need problem solvers who can address ecological degradation by bridging gaps between community and outside knowledge systems. Through our experience working for the Watershed Program of the White Mountain Apache Tribe, we have wrestled with the challenge of making ecological research more useful to tribal communities, particularly those that have become highly skeptical of conventional research. Simply importing or exporting knowledge does little to solve long-term ecological problems, which instead require an active dialogue between community and outside knowledge systems to help local institutions evolve with environmental changes. To fulfill these roles, individual need skills in listening, speaking …

Useful Concepts And Approaches To Ethics In Natural Resources Management, John D. Fox Jr.
Useful Concepts And Approaches To Ethics In Natural Resources Management, John D. Fox Jr.
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
My objective in this paper is to highlight a few concepts and approaches from ethics that might serve as food for thought when students are wrestling with controversial natural resource issues. Overall, I'm advocating critical reflection, empirical inquiry, and intellectual honesty. I am particularly going to look at the interrelationship between science and ethics. I suspect not everyone will agree with everything I suggest, but, as in the classroom, my purpose is to stimulate thought and dialogue. First, I present some basic concepts followed by a simplified summary of classical approaches to ethics. Finally, I suggest that Aldo Leopold's land …

Building Professionally-Based Communities Of Learning Among Faculty, Students, And Practitioners, Henry Campa, William W. Taylor, Scott R. Winterstein, Alexandra B. Felix
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Residential and non-residential "communities of learning" have been sued within institutions of higher education as formal methods to enhance interactions among individuals that ultimately helps learning. Typically, these communities have included student-to-student and faculty-to-student interactions within residential living areas, teams in a core of courses, or teams of students within a course. If students are to develop into leaders within their respective disciplines an additional component that should be integrated into communities of learning is practioners. The objectives of our paper are to describe: 1) communities of learning and why they should be established for all students to enhance learning, …

Teaching And Assessing An Integrated Field Practicum For Forestry And Applied Ecology Majors, Linda Marie Nagel
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Field practicums (also known as field camps) have long been a traditional component of many university forestry curricula. Natural resource professionals need a balance of knowledge in multiple disciplines, as well as applied technical and communication skills. The field practicum at Michigan Tech, a cornerstone of the School’s degree programs, has evolved in the courses offered, level of instruction, and the make-up of participants over the past decade. For the first time in 2003, students from two majors (forestry and applied ecology and environmental science), as well as graduate students and Peace Corps International students, took two different tracks at …

Although it is commonly assumed that closely related animals are similar in body size, the degree of similarity has not been examined across the taxonomic hierarchy. Moreover, little is known about the variation or consistency of body size patterns across geographic space or evolutionary time. Here, we draw from a data set of terrestrial, nonvolant mammals to quantify and compare patterns across the body size spectrum, the taxonomic hierarchy, continental space, and evolutionary time. We employ a variety of statistical techniques including “sib-sib” regression, phylogenetic autocorrelation, and nested ANOVA. We find an extremely high resemblance (heritability) of size among congeneric …

We evaluated two types of compounds for efficacy in inhibiting SARSCoV replication in vitro: calpain inhibitors (a class of cellular cysteine proteinases) and a number of nucleoside analogues. Cytopathic effect reduction assays visually determined with spectrophotometric verification by neutral red (NR) uptake assay were used to evaluate cytotoxicity and antiviral potency of the compounds. Significantly inhibitory compounds were then evaluated in virus yield reduction assays. Two calpain inhibitors, Val-Leu-CHO (calpain inhibitor VI) and Z-Val-Phe-Ala-CHO (calpain inhibitor III), were the most potent inhibitors of SARSCoV. By virus yield reduction assay, calpain inhibitor VI had a 90% effective concentration (EC90) of 3 …

Exploring A Cognitive Basis For Learning Spatial Relationships With Augmented Reality, Brett E. Shelton, Nicholas R. Hedley
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Augmented reality (AR) is an emergent class of interface that presents compelling possibilities for advancing spatial visualization. We offer a brief overview of AR technology and current research with in the educational realm. AR interfaces appear to provide a unique combination of visual display properties, modes of user manipulation, and interaction with spatial information. Drawing upon aspects of proprioception and sensorimotor function, we discuss how AR may have a unique and powerful link to spatial knowledge acquisition through visuo-motor involvement in the processing of information. We identify key properties of AR interfaces and how they differ from conventional visualization interfaces, …

1. Groundwater nitrate contamination has become a worldwide problem as increasing amounts of nitrogen fertilisers are used in agriculture. Alluvial groundwater is uniquely juxtaposed between soils and streams. Hydrological connections among these subsystems regulate nutrient cycling.
2. We measured denitrification using an in situ acetylene‐block assay in a nitrate‐contaminated portion of the Garonne River catchment along a gradient of surface water–ground water mixing during high (snowmelt) and low flow.
3. During high flow (mid‐April to early June) the water table rose an average of 35 cm and river water penetrated the subsurface to a great extent in monitoring wells. Denitrification …
