An Entrepreneurial Approach To Librarianship, Flora Shrode, Jennifer Duncan, Wendy Holliday
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Librarians from Utah State University explain recent efforts to encourage subject librarians to take a more holistic view of their roles. We are shifting from a traditional emphasis primarily on collection development and refocusing on natural connections between collections, instruction, liaison, and reference service. The poster provides background about Utah State University’s situation and explains our approach to analyzing local needs and culture to inform development of a new organizational structure. We describe our vision of subject librarianship, the process by which we assessed librarians’ ideas and goals for performing as subject librarians, and the actions we are taking to …

The Sagebrush Steppe Treatment Evaluation Project (SageSTEP) is a comprehensive, integrated, long-term study that evaluates the ecological effects of fire and fire surrogate treatments designed to reduce fuel and to restore sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) communities of the Great Basin and surrounding areas. SageSTEP has several features that make it ideal for testing hypotheses from state-and-transition theory: it is long-term, experimental, multisite, and multivariate, and treatments are applied across condition gradients, allowing for potential identification of biotic thresholds. The project will determine the conditions under which sagebrush steppe ecological communities recover on their own following fuel treatment versus the communities crossing …

Misconstruals Or More? The Interactions Of Orbit Diagrams And Explanations Of The Seasons, Victor R. Lee
Misconstruals Or More? The Interactions Of Orbit Diagrams And Explanations Of The Seasons, Victor R. Lee
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
This paper examines a “misconstrual hypothesis” regarding diagrams of the Earth’s orbit around the sun and how middle school students explain the cause of the seasons. Drawing from 24 semi-structured interviews, I present qualitative analyses of students’ explanations of why temperatures vary in summer and winter and how those are influenced by the elliptical shape of perspective drawings of the Earth’s orbit, common to many science textbooks. The results of the analysis suggest that diagram interpretation does not necessarily follow what has been often predicted in the literature and that conceptualizations can shift quite rapidly as different diagram features are …

Students Teaching Students A Unique Approach To Learning About The Complexities Of Marine Resource Management, Jim Berkson
Students Teaching Students A Unique Approach To Learning About The Complexities Of Marine Resource Management, Jim Berkson
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
The National Mairne Fisheries Service and Virginia Tech have teamed to develop a unique learning experience for top undergraduate students from across the country. During the six week summer program, students learn about the complexities of an important marine resources issue first‐hand from the experts who know the subject the best. In the summer of 2006, six students learned about marine protected areas (MPAs), and in particular, methods to evaluate the effectiveness of MPAs. The six students traveled to two MPAs in different stages of development and met with MPA experts. We designed the summer program to share the summer …

Peer Reviewed Publications From Class Projects, Carolyn A. Copenheaver
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
From 2001 to 2008, I coordinated the publication of 13 peer‐reviewed manuscripts stemming from group projects in a graduate‐level Advanced Forest Ecology class. The intention of the group projects was to immerse the students in actual forest ecology research and increase their professional development by personally involving them in the publication process. The student publications appeared in 11 different journals (American Midland Naturalist, Castanea, Dendrochronologia, Forest Ecology and Management, Journal of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Education, Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society, Natural Areas Journal, Northeastern Naturalist, Southeastern Geographer, and Tree‐Ring Research) and each group project had a unique …

Integrating Service Learning And International Study Into The Traditional Degree Programs, Quint Newcomer
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
In 2001, the University of Georgia Foundation made a significant commitment to expanding the opportunity for study abroad at UGA when it purchased a 155‐acre farm and built a new education and research center in San Luis de Monteverde, Costa Rica. UGA Costa Rica collaborates with departments and schools across the University to offer study abroad programs that offer courses directly related to major areas of study and that also integrate service‐learning as a central component of the overall study abroad experience. “Global service‐learning is a course‐based form of experiential education wherein students, faculty, staff and institutions a) collaborate with …

Partnering With International Study Abroad Vendors For Mutual Benefits, Wayde C. Morse, Greg Somers
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
International educational experiences have the ability to promote cultural understanding, cooperation and interaction with global society. In a period of reduced financial and administrative resources it is more difficult to promote these experiences. Auburn University (AU) and the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences (SFWS) has partnered with International Student Volunteers, Inc. (ISV) to provide academic oversight and credit for study abroad volunteer service experiences. ISV is an international volunteer travel organization who sends over 3,000 students abroad each year and whose participants have contributed over 250,000 volunteer hours in the fields of natural resource conservation and community development. ISV …

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
Wildlife researchers and managers frequently have to contend with difficult ethical questions during the course of their work, but currently lack an explicit scholarly forum to help them analyze the complicated ethical situations they encounter in the field, the laboratory, or conservation area. Since neither environmental ethics, nor animal ethics, nor research ethics currently addresses the tradeoff problems peculiar to wildlife research and management, a new field is needed. It must be the interdisciplinary product of organized and on‐going discussions across the natural sciences, social sciences, the humanities, and the conservation professions. Minteer and Collins (2005) proposed the creation of …
Survey Of Forest Engineering And Forest Operations Programs In North America, Elisabeth M. Dodson, Chad Bolding, Ben Spong
Survey Of Forest Engineering And Forest Operations Programs In North America, Elisabeth M. Dodson, Chad Bolding, Ben Spong
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
In 1999 the International Journal of Forest Engineering published a special edition titled “Forest Engineering – Looking Ahead Ten Years.” The lead article was “Graduate programs in forest engineering and forest operations: working towards extinction.” McNeel, Stokes, and Brinker surveyed graduate programs in North America that have named graduate programs in forest engineering and forest operations (FE/FO) with a primary focus on PhD‐level graduates. Concerns were raised over the low numbers of PhD graduates, aging FE/FO faculty, and declining employment opportunities for PhDs within traditional forest industry. These issues are still of significant concern; therefore, we propose to repeat this …
Challenges To Professional Accreditation Of Forestry Degree Programs With Low Enrollments: The Utah State University Experience, Terry L. Sharik, Dustin H. Ranglack
Challenges To Professional Accreditation Of Forestry Degree Programs With Low Enrollments: The Utah State University Experience, Terry L. Sharik, Dustin H. Ranglack
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
As a result of its setting in the semi‐arid Intermountain West where forests are confined largely to montane environments, Utah State University (USU) has historically had relatively low undergraduate enrollments in forestry compared to other natural resource disciplines and compared to other institutions in the U.S. also offering a broad range of natural resource degrees. As a result of this history, coupled to the national trend over the past two decades of proportionally lower enrollments in forestry compared to other natural resource disciplines, undergraduate enrollment in forestry at USU currently constitutes less than 4% of total enrollments in natural resources. …
Cooperative Learning In Natural Resources Education, Rich Etchberger
Cooperative Learning In Natural Resources Education, Rich Etchberger
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
I will present my use of cooperative learning techniques in a general education course at Utah State University (USU). I developed an undergraduate, junior‐level course called BIOL 3000 ‐ Biodiversity of Utah that is part of the general education requirements at Utah State University. From the beginning, a major challenge surfaced for this course in that the enrollment includes students who are science and also students who are non‐science majors. Science majors are biology and wildlife science majors. Non‐science majors are typically from outside the agricultural and natural resource fields. Non‐science students were underprepared for the course as they did …
Standing Our Ground: The Meaning Of Saf Accreditation, Laura E. Dewald, Terrance W. Clark
Standing Our Ground: The Meaning Of Saf Accreditation, Laura E. Dewald, Terrance W. Clark
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
Since its inception in 1935, the SAF accreditation program for forestry education has changed significantly. Initially, accreditation was a rating system of one’s alma mater to determine which graduates had the knowledge to be eligible for SAF membership versus those who needed more on‐ the‐job experience to qualify. Thus from the beginning, the focus of accreditation has been on quality of education. However, what constitutes “forestry education” has always been difficult for SAF to define for accreditation purposes. For example, a July 1935 Journal of Forestry article described “recreational forestry” as a branch of forestry or a separate profession. In …

Attracting Students To Forestry: The Lugar Purdue Future Of Forestry Programs And Awards, Ralph R. Johnson, Robert K. Swihart
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
In an effort to attract more students to the forest sciences, Purdue University and U.S. Senator Richard Lugar have initiated a program designed to introduce students to the forest sciences. Although the primary audience of the program is high school students, the curriculum is being designed for delivery as an optional for‐credit class targeting non‐forestry majors and as a course to enhance two‐year community college agriculture curricula. The program consists of two parts. The first part of the program is an online academic core that consists of 7 modules. Faculty in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources review and …

In 2007, the first FOPER masters program on Integrated Forest Policy and Economics was offered jointly by the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Forestry and the University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Forestry and accredited by not only Bosnia‐Herzegovina and Serbia, but also Albania, Croatia and Macedonia. Twenty‐four students from these countries enrolled in the program and to date nineteen of them have successfully defended their master’s thesis. This innovative program was the first time that students from the former Yugoslavian countries came together in a joint educational setting. It was also the first time that faculty from the different universities …
Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources At Naufrp Institutions: An Update, Terry L. Sharik, Robert J. Lilieholm
Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources At Naufrp Institutions: An Update, Terry L. Sharik, Robert J. Lilieholm
Conference on University Education in Natural Resources
Undergraduate enrollments in natural resources were analyzed for 30 NAUFRP institutions from around the country, covering the period 1980-2009. Results indicate that the steady downturn in enrollments beginning in the mid 1990s reversed itself in 2003 and continued to increase steadily through the present. Enrollments in the general category of Natural Resources and Environment recently eclipsed those in other more traditional fields of study such as forestry and wildlife and fisheries. Forestry enrollments, which in 1980 constituted nearly half of the total enrollments in all natural resource fields, currently make up less than only about one-fifth of these enrollments. These …
