Willingness To Pay Estimation When Protest Beliefs Are Not Separable From The Public Good Definition, Kimberly Rollins, M.D.R. Evans, Mimako Kobayashi, Anita Castledine
Willingness To Pay Estimation When Protest Beliefs Are Not Separable From The Public Good Definition, Kimberly Rollins, M.D.R. Evans, Mimako Kobayashi, Anita Castledine
Reports
Public good attributes that are correlated with protest beliefs but not separable from the good's value, would affect stated preference estimates of the WTP for the public good. Survey data collected to value a program to prevent ecosystem losses on Nevada rangelands, where the majority of land is publicly owned and managed, reveal more than half of the respondents exhibiting some protest belief. Of these, about 60% voted 'yes' to some nonzero bid amount. By treating protest beliefs and opposition to the proposed program as separate concepts, we systematically analyze their determinants and impacts on WTP. In this framework, people …

Influence Of Prescribed Fire On Ecosystem Biomass, Carbon, And Nitrogen In A Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Benjamin M. Rau, Robin Tausch, Alicia Reiner, Dale W. Johnson, Jeanne C. Chambers, Robert R. Blank, Annmarrie Lucchesi
Articles
Increases in pinyon and juniper woodland cover associated with land-use history are suggested to provide offsets for carbon emissions in arid regions. However, the largest pools of carbon in arid landscapes are typically found in soils, and aboveground biomass cannot be considered long-term storage in fire-prone ecosystems. Also, the objectives of carbon storage may conflict with management for other ecosystem services and fuels reduction. Before appropriate decisions can be made it is necessary to understand the interactions between woodland expansion, management treatments, and carbon retention. We quantified effects of prescribed fire as a fuels reduction and ecosystem maintenance treatment on …
Simultaneous Separation And Detection Of Cations And Anions Ion A Microfluidic Device With Suppressed Electroosmotic Flow And A Single Injection Point, B. R. Reschke, J. Schiffbauer, Boyd F. Edwards, A. T. Timperman
Simultaneous Separation And Detection Of Cations And Anions Ion A Microfluidic Device With Suppressed Electroosmotic Flow And A Single Injection Point, B. R. Reschke, J. Schiffbauer, Boyd F. Edwards, A. T. Timperman
All Physics Faculty Publications
A rapid and simultaneous separation of cationic and anionic peptides and proteins in a glass microfluidic device that has been covalently modified with a neutral poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) coating to minimize protein adsorption is presented. The features of the device allow samples that contain both anions and cations to be introduced from a central flow stream and separated in different channels with different outlets—all in the presence of low electroosmotic flow (EOF) imparted by the PEG coating. The analytes are electrophoretically extracted from a central hydrodynamic stream and electrophoretically separated in two different channels, in which pressure driven flow has …

Select Tissue Mineralconcentrations And Chronic Wasting Disease Status In Mule Deer From North-Central Colorado, Lisa L. Wolfe, Mary M. Conner, Cathy L. Bedwell, Paul M. Lukacs, Michael W. Miller
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Trace mineral imbalances have been suggested as having a causative or contributory role in chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion disease of several North American cervid species. To begin exploring relationships between tissue mineral concentrations and CWD in natural systems, we measured liver tissue concentrations of copper, manganese, and molybdenum in samples from 447 apparently healthy, adult (≥2 yr old) mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) culled or vehicle killed from free-ranging populations in north-central Colorado, United States, where CWD occurs naturally; we also measured copper concentrations in brain-stem (medulla oblongata at the obex) tissue from 181 of these deer. Analyses revealed …

Behavioral And Chemical Ecology Of Marine Organisms With Respect To Tetrodotoxin, Becky L. Williams
Behavioral And Chemical Ecology Of Marine Organisms With Respect To Tetrodotoxin, Becky L. Williams
Biology Faculty Publications
The behavioral and chemical ecology of marine organisms that possess tetrodotoxin (TTX) has not been comprehensively reviewed in one work to date. The evidence for TTX as an antipredator defense, as venom, as a sex pheromone, and as an attractant for TTX-sequestering organisms is discussed. Little is known about the adaptive value of TTX in microbial producers; thus, I focus on what is known about metazoans that are purported to accumulate TTX through diet or symbioses. Much of what has been proposed is inferred based on the anatomical distribution of TTX. Direct empirical tests of these hypotheses are absent in …

The lilac-ash borer (Podosesia syringae), belongs to a group of insects known as the clear-winged moths. The wings of most sesiid moths in have at least partially transparent wings (devoid of the colored scales that coat most moth and butterfly wings).
