Some Economic Aspects Of The Silver Fox Industry Including A Brief Study Of The Economic Possibilities Of The Industry In Northern Utah And Vicinity, Duncan Wayne Henrie

The question is often asked, does the production of silver fox fur pay? Being a new industry in this part of the country (1924 was probably the beginning) not much is known concerning the facts of the business by the average person. In the following pages an economic discussion of the factors of this industry will be given. To begin with a short history of the fur industry and fur farming is given, to give perspective and background, as it is only through the history of the past that we are able to judge the future.

The great losses in bean production in the vicinity of Logan during the summer of 1928, brought about an investigation as to the cause for such losses. In some fields there was a total loss of the crop while in others the injury was less severe. An examination of the infested plants showed that the flowers had withered and fallen, and the leaves were drying up and would fall at the slightest touch. This condition was uncommon in this region and its cause unknown. However, it was noted that on plants where this condition occurred numerous small thrips were present …

The confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum Duval) and Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella Zeller) have long been recorded as serious pests of stored grain products (Riley. 1839, Chittenden 1896). In recent years they have served as very valuable material for laboratory experiments on insect nutrition (Chapman 1924, Richardson 1926). In spite of the economic and scientiric importance of these two insects the writer could find little detailed information on their growth and development under carefully controlled conditions of temperature and relative hunidity, on a normal whole weat diet. The Clover Leaf Weevil, Hypera punctata (Fabr.),* is a foreign pest introduced from Europe into New York, which first became noticeable in 1881. The insect has rapidly spread westward reaching Utah at least by 1912. Since this time several out-breaks have occured. In 1927 the injury to alfalfa, Medicago sativa, was severe in limited areas in Hooper, Weber County, and in 1927 and 1928 the infestation was very pronounced in certain parts of Salt Lake City.

Treehopper injury is a problem that has given many fruit growers in Utah some concern during recent years. These people have observed that their young fruit trees and the twigs and smaller branches of older trees have been attacked during the autumn of each year in a manner that produced numerous cuts which later formed scars. The trees frequently became unthrifty, and more or less deformed and stunted, as a result of these annual attacks.

The investigation reported in this publication was made for the purpose of ascertaining the present status of the treehopper situation in Utah orchards.

On January 16, 1908, the State Board of Land Commissioners, on behalf of the State of Utah, undertook to build a reclamation project in the Sevier River Valley, intended to reclaim between 25,000 to 35,000 acres of the virgin lands lying on the west side of Sevier River in Sevier and San Pete Counties. From January, 1908 to January, 1914, the State expended nearly $1,000,000 for the construction of the reservior dm and the canal leading from it. A few researches have been concerned with the structure and pollination of alfalfa flowers. Others have considered the biological problems concerned in the pollination and fecundation of the flowers. In none of these studies, however, has an attempt been made to follow carefully the alfalfa flowers through various stages of development. Nor has any effort been made to determine what effect the condition and duration of these stages may have upon the resulting seed crop.

Indeed, under normal climatic conditions this enormous natural resource has not failed the grazier, except where it has been called upon to meet unreasonable demands. The productivity of the range has declined sharply, however, wherever the requirements of plant growth have been disregarded for many years in succession.
