Bulletin No. 194 - The Influence Of Storage On The Composition Of Flour, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst Aug 1925

Bulletin No. 194 - The Influence Of Storage On The Composition Of Flour, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst

UAES Bulletins

There is quite a general belief among millers, bakers, and the laity that flour improves on ageing. However, there is no definite information as to the time requisite for this improvement nor whether it reaches a maximum and then deteriorates. The information is no more exact as to the changes which occur during the ageing process or the conditions which govern them. We have found no reference in the literature where bad effects have resulted from storage, provided a highly-milled, sound flour is stored in dry, well-ventilated rooms free from odors (20). The results which have been reported point to …

The Effect Of Sulfur On The Microflora Of The Soil, J. M. Fife May 1925

The Effect Of Sulfur On The Microflora Of The Soil, J. M. Fife

Biology

Sulfur is one of the required elements for all plants and animals. Does the Greenville soil contain sufficient sulfur for the maximum bacterial activities when it contains only .0068 per cent?(7) It is the object of this paper to present data which has been obtained in trying to answer this question. The Greenville soil is an ideal media in which to study the effect of sulfur on the soil microflora due to the abundance of all the required elements with the exception of sulfur, and its most interesting microflora (6) (7).

Genetic Studies Of The F3 And F4 Generations Of Sevier X Dicklow Wheat Crosses, Carl Frischknecht May 1925

Genetic Studies Of The F3 And F4 Generations Of Sevier X Dicklow Wheat Crosses, Carl Frischknecht

Biology

In 1919 a number of wheat crosses were made at the Utah Experiment Station by Professor George Stevart, the purpose being to develop a superior strain of wheat for the intermountain region and to provide material for various genetic studies in wheat. While the data presented in this thesis are the results of genetic studies of the F3 and F4 generations of the Sevier X Dicklow grain crosses, mention is also made of several homozygous strains which as a result of this study are now being grown in yield tests and give promise of being superior to either …

Bulletin No. 192 - Biennial Report Of The Director: For The Years 1923 And 1924 Jan 1925

Bulletin No. 192 - Biennial Report Of The Director: For The Years 1923 And 1924

UAES Bulletins

No report (either annual or biennial) of the work of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station has been published separately since 1906. There has been so much inquiry regarding the present status of research projects that a brief report at this time is considered opportune. The report is an attempt to give the reader a brief but concise and comprehensive survey of the research work now under way at the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station as well as a brief description of the work being attempted on each of the experimental farms.

Field Studies Of The Control Of The Sugar Beet Nematode. (1920-24). (Heterodera Schachtii Schmidt)., Alfred H. Bateman May 1924

Field Studies Of The Control Of The Sugar Beet Nematode. (1920-24). (Heterodera Schachtii Schmidt)., Alfred H. Bateman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The dire consequences of nematode invasion have been graphically depicted by Spiegler (1907), who says, the beet industry was at its heyday during the seventies. Nor satisfied with the land already in cultivation, the farmer plowed fertile lands along the border of the streams, wherein to grow beets, obtaining in some cases of 20 to 27 tons an acre.

A Contribution To Our Knowledge Of The Aphididae Of Utah, George Knowlton May 1924

A Contribution To Our Knowledge Of The Aphididae Of Utah, George Knowlton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There are many groups of insects in Utah that have not been touched in a systematic way up to the present time, and to the knowledge of the author no systematic work has been done on the homopterous family Aphididae.

Due to the very common occurrence of the aphids, or plant lice, and the need for a simple key that would aid in the determination of these insects, this work was commenced in June 1923, continuous work being carried on in collecting, determining, drawing and describing, up to the present time.

Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson Apr 1924

Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Variation in quality of plants of the same species has been known to exist for a long time. The influences bringing about such variation have been studied only comparatively recently. Quantity production has been given the greatest amount of attention as a rule, the beneficial results from the use of manures being judged by the quantity of produce. Some plants, however, varied so widely in composition, and the variations were of such paramount importance, that the influences affecting quality began to receive some attention. Of this type of plants may be mentioned sugar-beets and tobacco. There was also the hope …

Viability Of Bacillus Typhosus In Media Of Various Kinds In Relation To The Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Barrett Elmer Aug 1923

Viability Of Bacillus Typhosus In Media Of Various Kinds In Relation To The Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Barrett Elmer

Biology

A careful study of the literature on the viability of the typhoid organism reveals a startling lack of agreement. Potter, in a series of experiments, comes to the conclusion that if a repressing effect occurs on B. typhosus because of the acidity of milk due to souring, it is so small as to be negligible and as a consequence such acidity cannot be depended upon to eliminate the organism. Baker, after experimenting on milk and butter, isolated the typhoid organism after 45 days from milk and after 151 days from butter. Frankel and Kister find the typhoid organism perishing in …

Vestigial Pleometrosis In The North American Polistes Pallipes Lepeletier, Joseph Bequaert Jun 1923

Vestigial Pleometrosis In The North American Polistes Pallipes Lepeletier, Joseph Bequaert

Ba

In the October-December, 1919, issue of this BULLETIN my esteemed friend, Mr. Wm. T. Davis, has published some observations of the common American social wasps, a most welcome addition to the scanty literature of the subject in America. Among other interesting points, he relates several cases in which two, three, or four queens of the common Eastern Polistes pallipes Lepeletier ( = metrica Say; variatus Say) had worked together in establishing a new colony, though in this as in other species of Polistes each queen as a rule starts her nest alone.

Improvement Of Small Grains By Pure Line Selection, Dilworth Walker May 1923

Improvement Of Small Grains By Pure Line Selection, Dilworth Walker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present economic status of grain farming in the United States calls for adjustments in various ways. Legislation, such as price fixing, can do very little. Adjustment of acreage along with improved methods of marketing can do much. But improvement of the grains grown through breeding processes to increase the yields per acre and improve the milling quality, will render a service of permanent value, since all of the results appear in the profit column.

Hybridization Of Wheat, Floyd M. Beach May 1923

Hybridization Of Wheat, Floyd M. Beach

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper is to set forth the purpose of wheat hybridization. To do this properly it is necessary to know the history of hybridization of plants. Also to know some of the workers in this field and the hybrids produced by them. In the work at the Experiment Stations the various experimenters have discovered many interesting facts which it is necessary to know and understand. To thoroughly comprehend the work it is also necessary to do the actual processes of the work and to carry the hybrid through several generations and eventually to the goal for which …
