This study was a comparison of the teenage married girls in school and the married girls who dropped out of school in the Stockton Unified School District, in Stockton, California during the 1966-67 school year.

The girls who stay in school seem to have a more conducive home environment than the girls who drop out of school. The in school girls had the following advantages: They had more fathers who approved of their marriage; they had a significantly larger number of mothers who approved of their spouses after marriage; they were not running away from parental authority; their parents had …

A drainage function, D (u_n), is developed to describe the rate of fall and the shape of the water table between drains for an infinite series of parallel drains. The drainage function is evaluated and presented graphically for design purposes. The solution of the drainage function is compared with the solution of Glover's transient state drainage equation. The two equations agreed very well, but the agreement was not as good for very high values of √(4αt)/ L.

The United States offered an ideal situation for prisoner of war camps during World War II. The remoteness of the states of Utah and Idaho offered also an ideal situation to intern prisoners.

The United States established 141 base camps and 313 branch camps. Out of this number, Utah and Idaho represented a total number of nine base and twenty-one branch camps. Utah and Idaho had under their supervision approximately 11,660 or 3.6% of the prisoners in the base camps.

Soil Moisture Depletion By Quaking Aspen And Gambel Oak In Central Utah, Jere J. Christner

Soil moisture depletion was studied in quaking aspen and Gambel oak areas of central Utah. The study area is located at about 8100 feet elevation in a zone with 20 to 25 inches precipitation annually.

Treatments ranged from no disturbance to clearcutting. Soil Moisture was measured periodically during the summer of 1966.

Results showed less soil moisture depletion on the plots of least residual basel area. Average soil moisture depletion the season following cutting at two sites was 4.3 inches less than it was on higher residual basal area plots.

Studies were conducted using four phosphate compounds: sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium tetraphosphate, and tetrasodium pyrophosphate at 1, 5, and 10 per cent concentrations to ascertain their effects on fresh cherries, as well as their in vitro antimycotic effects against Botrytis sp., Penicillium expansum, and Rhizopus nigricans.

Although much information is available in which the cholesterol level and concentration of other lipids in serum have been studied, only limited data have been reported for normal human adults and concentrations of fatty acids composition of lipid classes in serum. In recent study in this laboratory, five male adults who were in good health served as experimental subjects. They were on a self-chosen diet and received a test dose of Nicospan (buffered nicotinic acid) of 2 gm per day for three weeks of a six-week test period. Four healthy university women students (age 21-26) while on self-selected diets and living under normal living conditions served as experimental subjects in a study of changes of serum total lipids, distribution of lipid classes, and the fatty acid composition of lipid fractions during the menstrual cycle. Effect of meal frequency (2 meals vs 3 meals with no breakfast) was also included.

Total lipids were extracted from serum. Chemical determinations of total lipids, total and free cholesterols, and lipid phosphorous were made on these extracts. Concentration of cholesterol esters and phospholipids were calculated and triglycerides plus free fatty acids were calculated …

Five normal, healthy, men (age 33-42) served as experimental subjects. The subjects were on self-chosen diets and received a test-dose of buffered nicotinic acid (Nico-Span in capsule form) of 2 gm daily for three weeks, from the second through the fourth weeks, of the six and one-half week test period. About 30 ml of venous blood was obtained twice weekly from each subject, after an overnight fast of at least 12 hours. Each subject collected a 24-hour urine sample of the day prior to the blood sampling and also kept a record of food eaten.

Millions of pounds of venison are harvested each year in the United States. Over 12,000,000 pounds of dressed venison are harvested during the regular season each year in the State of Utah. The hunters of venison contribute approximately 10 1/2 billion dollars to the economy of the state for licenses, lodging, transportation, and other expense of hunting. In many cases this source of meat is a significant part of the household meat supply. Venison is often wasted, however, because of its undesirable flavor. Large differences exist between plant species in their response to ionizing radiation. The factors involved in radiosensitivities are complex and not well understood. The best criterion, so far, in studies on the acute lethal level of radiation for plant species is the average interphase chromosome volume (Sparrow et al. 1963). There are also close relationships that exist between DNA content, nuclear volume, total chromosome volume and radiosensitivity (Bowen, 1962; Sparrow et al. 1963; Sparrow et al. 1965). Fourteen compounds were isolated from an alkaline hydrolyzed extract of alfalfa leaves by using cellulose thin layer plates. The R_f values, fluorescent characteristics, and color reactions were given for all the compounds isolated.

Eight of these were identified as trans-ferulic acid, trans-p-coumaric acid, trans-caffeic acid, o-coumaric acid, tricin, syringic acid, cis-ferulic acid and cis-p-coumaric acid. The identity of the compounds was confirmed by comparison of the R_f values on thin layer chromatograms, fluorescent characteristics under ultraviolet light, and color reactions of spray reagents with those of authentic samples. This study was a search for a valid and reliable tool for the measurement and appraisal of the Navajo student at Intermountain School whose cultural and bilingual background make many highly verbal tests untrustworthy. The two tests chosen for the study were the Chicago Non-verbal Examination and the Cattell Institute for Personality and Ability Testing Culture Free Test. It was assumed that these tests would call attention to students who had good intellectual ability but were below standard in reading and verbal development and had been overlooked because of their lack of verbal fluency.

Academic achievement at Utah State University was predicted for a sample of students from Cache County, Utah, high schools. Predictor variables were grade point averages for grades ten-twelve and the ten scores of the Iowa Tests of Educational Development.

Criteria included grade point ave rages after one quarter of college and after each college year. Investigations to study (1) the species composition and distribution of Green River fishes between Flaming Gorge Dam and Ouray, Utah and (2) the ecology and life history of selected native species (Colorado squafish, Ptychocheilus lucius; Colorad chub, Gila robusta; bluehead sucker, Pantosteus delphinus; and humpback sucker, Xyrauchen texanus) in Dinosaur National Monument were conducted from May, 1964, to October, 1966. In 1957, and several succeeding years, infested range was treated with poisoned grain for pocket gopher control. Nearby range (also infested) was not treated. "New math" has drastically changed secondary mathematics and the demands on the secondary mathematics teacher. The changes and effects of changes were studied with emphasis on suggested programs in teacher preparation.

Questionnaires were given to one hundred four secondary mathematics teachers in Utah. Fifty-eight were returned, of which fifty were usable. The questionnaire contained twenty-six mathematics courses offered to mathematics education majors in Utah universities. The teachers indicated which courses were valuable to them in teaching secondary school mathematics. Rank order correlation coefficients were calculated among subgroups of the questionnaire to determine internal consistency. All coefficients were above the 1 …

Zooplankton of the littoral and limnetic zones of Bear Lake, Idaho-Utah, were collected over a 17-month period. Twenty-three species of zooplankton were recorded, as well as nine other species represented by both flora and fauna. At the time of sampling 17 physical and chemical parameters were also measured. Methods of analysis for the plankton and the environment are described and discussed.

A total of 176 kangaroo rats (151 Dipodomys ordii and 25 D. microps) were captured in northwestern Utah and examined for coccidia. Of these 176 rats, four D. ordii (2.6%) and four D. microps (16.0%) were infected with Eimeria utahensis, a new species of coccidia. Little seasonal difference was found in the infection rate of either species. The characteristics of the sporulated oocysts of this species were described. A sporocyst plug was reported for the first time in an eimerian oocyst.

Artificially excysted sporozoites were studied by various methods. Thirty living sporozoites averaged 22.5 𝜇 in length by …

This study was undertaken to determine the effects of rotenone applied during a fish control operation in September 1962 and the installation of Flaming Gorge Dam in November 1962 upon the distribution of invertebrates in the Green River. Since these two events, the river has changed from a warm, turbid stream to a cold, clear trout stream for about 45 miles below the dam. Totals of 234 bottom samples and 394 drift samples were collected between the dam and Ouray, Utah (166 miles below the dam). The Bayesian approach to probability and statistics is described, a brief history of Bayesianism is related, differences between Bayesian and Frequentist schools of statistics are defined, protential applications are investigated, and a literature survey is presented in the form of a machine-sort card file.

Bayesian thought is increasing in favor among statisticians because of its ability to attack problems that are unassailable from the Frequentist approach. It should become more popular among practitioners because of the flexibility it allows experimenters and the ease with which prior knowledge can be combined with experimental data.
