Nutrition And Fitness Guide For Graduating Student-Athletes, Anna Fukunaga

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

For the last four years of your life, you have been supported by strength coaches, academic advisors, athletic trainers, tutors, mentors, and coaches. Your life is dedicated to your sport, and your body is molded into the ideal build to compete at the highest level you can achieve. As soon as your competitive days are over, your life dramatically changes and the needs of your body change as well. Because you typically do not sustain the same level of activity, you do not have the same nutritional needs. The demands you place on your body for your sport are higher …

The Measurement Of Teachers' Implementation And Acceptability Of A Cbm Focus, Aaron K. Peterson May 2011

The Measurement Of Teachers' Implementation And Acceptability Of A Cbm Focus, Aaron K. Peterson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) is a method that teachers use to formatively assess progress in reading, math, writing, and spelling. In recent years, different data-management systems have been created to systematically organize, group, and monitor data on multiple students for teachers to make better instructional decisions. Most data-management-systems are fee-based and can be cost-prohibitive, but CBM Focus is a free program consisting of the same concepts, charting, and data-entry methods. This project measured the social validity and implementation fidelity of CBM Focus—a curriculum-based measurement data management system for recording student reading, writing, and math records. Eleven participating elementary teachers in this …

Building An Interdisciplinary Research Program In Water Conservation: Approach, Preliminary Findings, And Next Steps, David E. Rosenberg, Joanna Endter-Wada, Arthur J. Caplan, Diana T. Glenn, Guy Ballard, Katie Henderson

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Effective urban water conservation programs must harness a synergy of new technologies, public policies, social cost pricing, information dissemination, citizen engagement, and coordinated actions across decision making scales. Together, these factors affect the volume of water an individual user ultimately saves and the overall success of a conservation program or programs. Over the past 18 months, we have started building an interdisciplinary research program in urban water conservation to quantify and assess the effects of these interconnected factors to motivate citizen engagement. We have interviewed water utility managers and conservation coordinators across the state of Utah, held focus groups with …

Collaborative Strategic Board Games As A Site For Distributed Computational Thinking, Matthew Berland, Victor R. Lee Apr 2011

Collaborative Strategic Board Games As A Site For Distributed Computational Thinking, Matthew Berland, Victor R. Lee

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper examines the idea that contemporary strategic board games represent an informal, interactional context in which complex computational thinking takes place. When games are collaborative – that is, a game requires that players work in joint pursuit of a shared goal – the computational thinking is easily observed as distributed across several participants. This raises the possibility that a focus on such board games are profitable for those who wish to understand computational thinking and learning in situ. This paper introduces a coding scheme, applies it to the recorded discourse of three groups of game players, and provides qualitative …

How Does Psi Chi Journal Of Undergraduate Research Measure Up?, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Psychology Faculty Publications

Understanding the complexities inherent in descriptions of research journals can take significant time and energy, and in the end leave the average psychologist and psychology student wondering—what does it all mean? Why does this matter? In this column, I attempt to provide information to illuminate how journals are described and why we care. Additionally, I will review how our own journal, Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research, measures up on these criteria. In short, Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research is a scholarly journal that is peer-reviewed and indexed. Let’s explore these areas so you will feel very excited about …

Noise And Complexity In Human Postural Control: Interpreting The Different Estimations Of Entropy, Christopher K. Rhea, Tobin A. Silver, S. Lee Hong, Joong Hyun Ryu, Breanna E. Studenka, Charmayne M. L. Hughes, Jeffrey M. Haddad

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Background: Over the last two decades, various measures of entropy have been used to examine the complexity of human postural control. In general, entropy measures provide information regarding the health, stability and adaptability of the postural system that is not captured when using more traditional analytical techniques. The purpose of this study was to examine how noise, sampling frequency and time series length influence various measures of entropy when applied to human center of pressure (CoP) data, as well as in synthetic signals with known properties. Such a comparison is necessary to interpret data between and within studies that use …

Using Organization Development For A Major Social Change Effort With Women And Education In Utah, Susan R. Madsen, Cheryl Hanewicz, Susan Thackeray Feb 2011

Using Organization Development For A Major Social Change Effort With Women And Education In Utah, Susan R. Madsen, Cheryl Hanewicz, Susan Thackeray

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

A critical issue right now in the state of Utah relates to women and higher education. Many leaders and citizens within the state have expressed concern that Utah is below the national average when it comes to women enrolling and completing postsecondary degrees. Although many speculate regarding the causes and challenges at the heart of this broader phenomenon, Utah stakeholders are unclear when it comes to the deeper complexities of this issue in the lives of the young female citizens within the state. The purpose of this paper and conference presentation is two-fold: first, to outline a complex, dynamic case …

Preparing More Hispanic Women For Effective Workplace Learning, Nicolle M. Johnson, Susan R. Madsen Feb 2011

Preparing More Hispanic Women For Effective Workplace Learning, Nicolle M. Johnson, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Scholars and practitioners are interested in college attainment as an area of inquiry because post-secondary graduation is linked to increased life-long learning desires and skills as well as other benefits that will influence the effectiveness of future workplace training, development, and educational opportunities. For example, Pascarella and Terenzini (2005) stated that college not only influences employment and earnings but it also impacts moral, psychosocial, and cognitive characteristics in addition to attitudes, values, and quality of life. Cerna, Perez, and Saenz (2009) also argued that the various forms of capital (e.g., social, economic, cultural, and human) that students have when entering …
