Adolescents' Affective Engagement With Theatre: Surveying Middle School Students' Attitudes, Values, And Beliefs., Matt Jan 2011

Adolescents' Affective Engagement With Theatre: Surveying Middle School Students' Attitudes, Values, And Beliefs., Matt

Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

This essay explores how viewing a single Theatre for Young Audiences production might affect the attitudes, values, and/or beliefs of adolescent spectators. Data is drawn from a mixed-methods case study performed with middle school students who viewed a professional performance for young people, and is considered through the lens of cognitive studies in light of advances in research considering the human mirror neuron system. Data suggest it is highly probable that under certain circumstances viewing a single Theatre for Young Audiences production can influence the values of adolescent spectators. The essay concludes by exploring the ethical ramifications of these findings.

Persuasion By Way Of Example: Does Including Gratuity Guidelines On Customers’ Checks Affect Tipping Behavior In Restaurants?, John S. Seiter, Garett M. Brownlee, Matthew Sanders

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined the role of gratuity guidelines on tipping behavior in restaurants. When diners were finished with their meals, they were given checks that either did or did not include calculated examples informing them what various percentages of their bill would amount to. Results indicated that parties who received the gratuity examples left significantly higher tips than did those receiving no examples. These results and their implications are discussed.

Financial Disagreements And Marital Conflict Tactics, Jeffery Dew, J Dakin Jan 2011

Financial Disagreements And Marital Conflict Tactics, Jeffery Dew, J Dakin

Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications

Recent studies have suggested that relative to other types of marital disagreement, financial disagreements are more problematic for couples. Using data from the National Survey of Families and Households (N = 3,861 couples), we tested whether different types of marital disagreements predicted self-reported marital conflict tactics. Considering the findings overall, financial disagreements were among the consistent top predictors of conflict tactics, including using heated arguments more frequently than calm discussion. Contrary to previous studies, however, disagreements over housework also predicted conflict tactics about as strongly as financial disagreements. Husbands’ reports of financial disagreements were more closely associated with conflict tactics …

Business Ethics And Social Corporate Responsibility: Exploring The Perceptions Of Utah Workers, Susan R. Madsen Jan 2011

Business Ethics And Social Corporate Responsibility: Exploring The Perceptions Of Utah Workers, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

There is much debate regarding the level of ethical responsibility that a business has to its local community as well as society as a whole. The purpose of this research study was to better understand how Utah workers feel about business ethics and corporate social responsibility. Questions guiding this study include the following: Do businesses have a moral responsibility to protect and provide goods and services that maximize benefit for the community and its citizens as a whole, including its own employees? Are businesses morally obligated solely to their shareholders? Are companies in Utah viewed as active moral agents? Do …

Exploring K-3 Teachers' Implementation Of Comprehension Strategy Instruction (Csi) Using Expectancy-Value Theory, Laura Slack Foley Jan 2011

Exploring K-3 Teachers' Implementation Of Comprehension Strategy Instruction (Csi) Using Expectancy-Value Theory, Laura Slack Foley

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This research investigated factors that influence the implementation levels of evidence-based comprehension strategy instruction (CSI) among K–3 teachers. An explanatory design was chosen to gather and probe the data. Quantitative data were gathered via a mailed survey distributed through a representative sample of the 40 school districts (through a stratified-random selection of teachers) in a state in the Rocky Mountain West. Expectancy-value theory was applied as it affects self-reported levels of teacher implementation of CSI. Both expectancy and value showed significance for predicting self-reported CSI implementation in two multiple regression analyses. Surveys revealed teachers' perceptions of what impedes or supports …

Mapping Engineering Concepts For Secondary Level Education, Jenny L. Daugherty Jan 2011

Mapping Engineering Concepts For Secondary Level Education, Jenny L. Daugherty

Publications

Much of the national attention on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education tends to concentrate on science and mathematics, with its emphasis on standardized test scores. However as the National Academy of Engineering Committee on K-12 Engineering Education stressed, engineering can contribute to the development of an effective and interconnected STEM education system (Katehi, Pearson, & Feder, 2009). In addition, engineering can provide authentic learning contexts for science, technology, and mathematics. Numerous K-12 engineering initiatives have emerged across the U.S. developing curriculum and conducting teacher professional development (Brophy, Klein, Portsmore, & Rogers, 2008). The focus of pre-college engineering education …

Understanding Of Student Task Interpretation, Design Planning, And Cognitive Strategies During Engineering Design Activities In Grades 9-12, Oenardi Lawanto

Publications

The objective of this study was to describe the task interpretation of students engaged in a design activity and determine the extent to which students translate their understanding of their design task to their planning and cognitive strategies. Twenty-nine students at one Colorado high school participated in this study. Students worked individually in the Architectural Design class (n=7), and in teams in the Robotics Design class (n=22). To capture students’ perceptions of their understanding of the task, planning strategies, and cognitive strategies, the Engineering Design Questionnaire (EDQ) was used. The development of the EDQ was guided by Butler and Cartier’s …

Design Problems For Secondary Students, David H. Jonassen Jan 2011

Design Problems For Secondary Students, David H. Jonassen

Publications

Are there different kinds of design problems? According to Brown and Chandrasekaran (1989), Class 1 design problems are open-ended, non-routine creative activities where the goals are ill-structured, and there is no effective design plan specifying the sequence of actions to take in producing a design model. Class 2 problems use existing, well-developed design and decomposition plans (e.g. designing a new automobile). Class 3 designs are routine where design and decomposition plans are known as well as customary actions taken to deal with failures (e.g., writing a computer program). Jonassen (2011) argued that problems vary in terms of structuredness, complexity, and …

Engineering Challenges In High School Stem Courses: A Compilation Of Invited Position Papers, Dan L. Householder Jan 2011

Engineering Challenges In High School Stem Courses: A Compilation Of Invited Position Papers, Dan L. Householder

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Since its initial funding by the National Science Foundation in 2004, the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE) has worked to understand the infusion of engineering design experiences into the high school setting. Over the years, an increasing number of educators and professional groups have participated in the expanding initiative seeking to acquaint all students with engineering design. While there is strong support for providing students with engineering design experiences in their high school STEM courses, the lack of consensus on purposes and strategies has become increasingly apparent as the work continues. Among the unsettled issues are the …

“Getting Noticed”: Middle Childhood Incross-Cultural Perspective, David F. Lancy, M. Annette Grove

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Although rarely named, the majority of societies in the ethnographic record demarcate a period between early childhood and adolescence. Prominent signs of demarcation are: for the first time, pronounced gender separation in fact and in role definition; increased freedom of movement for boys while girls may be bound more tightly to their mothers; and heightened expectations for socially responsible behavior. But, above all, middle childhood is about coming out of the shadows of community life and assuming a distinct, lifetime character. Naming and other rites of passage sometimes acknowledge this transition, but it is, reliably, marked by the assumption or …

Two Studies Of Tierii Literacy Development: Throwing Sixth Graders A Lifeline, A. W. Graves, L. Duesbery, Nicole Pyle, R. Brandon, A. Mcintosh

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Two experimental studies at one urban middle school investigated the effects of the combination of Tier I and Tier II evidence-based reading instruction compared to Tier I alone on struggling sixth-grade readers (N = 109). All participants received free or reduced-price lunch, and 95% were considered English learners at some point in their school history. In both studies, Tier II intervention consisted of intensive instruction in word analysis, fluency building, comprehension, and vocabulary for 30 hours across 10 weeks. Results of both studies taken individually and combined indicated significant differences in favor of the intervention groups on oral reading …

Seeing The Forest For The Trees: Managing Social Conflict And Forest Restoration, Steven E. Daniels, Jens Emborg, Greg B. Walker Jan 2011

Seeing The Forest For The Trees: Managing Social Conflict And Forest Restoration, Steven E. Daniels, Jens Emborg, Greg B. Walker

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper examines the role that social conflict is likely to play in forest restoration projects. A definition of conflict as “perceived goal interference among interdependent parties” serves as a point of departure for the discussion, and the nature of forest restoration conflict is systematically examined by focusing on each aspect of the definition: perceptions, goal interference, the parties, and their interdependence. Agencies undertaking restoration projects are encouraged to adopt a discourse orientation, wherein they recognize that 1) their public involvement efforts are creating a discourse that can incorporate a wide array of values and voices and 2) groups may …

On Larra’S Construction Of Authority In His Articles: Humor, Donald E. Schurlknight Jan 2011

On Larra’S Construction Of Authority In His Articles: Humor, Donald E. Schurlknight

Decimonónica

In this essay I will be attempting to cast light on some aspects of Mariano José de Larra’s construction of authority as a writer. In particular, I will be focusing on the use of humor as a means of achieving authority in times of contentious political strife—a civil war was raging—and limited political freedom. However, I will also draw attention to other closely related aspects of this construction. More succinctly, I will be arguing that humor is the significant stratagem that allows Larra to construct his “authority,” by which I mean his ability to convince the readers of his articles …

Carmela Eulate Sanjurjo’S La Muñeca: Narcissism, Education, And Luxury, Sylvia López Jan 2011

Carmela Eulate Sanjurjo’S La Muñeca: Narcissism, Education, And Luxury, Sylvia López

Decimonónica

Lamenting the poor education that Puerto Rican women received at the end of nineteenth century, Manuel Fernández Juncos (1846–1928), one of Puerto Rico’s most distinguished writers, observes in a prologue titled “La mujer en Puerto-Rico”:

Integrating Engineering Design Challenges Into Secondary Stem Education, Ronald L. Carr Jan 2011

Integrating Engineering Design Challenges Into Secondary Stem Education, Ronald L. Carr

Publications

Engineering is being currently taught in the full spectrum of the P-12 system, with an emphasis on design-oriented teaching (Brophy, Klein, Portsmore, & Rogers, 2008). Due to only a small amount of research on the learning of engineering design in elementary and middle school settings, the community of practice lacks the necessary knowledge of the trajectory of students' learning progressions towards design mastery and expertise and the appropriateness of otherwise established design pedagogies. The issue is even more pressing since many states are embedding engineering into their standards without a clear notion of how engineering (often conceptualized as design) works …

Development And Implementation Of A Bayesian Model For Sediment Transport In Fluvial Systems, Mark Schmelter Jan 2011

Development And Implementation Of A Bayesian Model For Sediment Transport In Fluvial Systems, Mark Schmelter

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Recent studies in the field of fluvial sediment transport underscore the difficulty in reliably estimating transport model parameters, collecting accurate observations, and making predictions due to measurement error and conceptual model uncertainty. There is a pressing need to develop models that can account for measurement error, conceptual model uncertainty, and natural variability while providing probability-based predictions as well as a means for conceptual model discrimination. The model presented in this research employs an excess shear sediment transport equation for a uni-size sediment bed developed in a Bayesian statistical framework. This statistical model provides a means to rigorously estimate distributions of …
