Improvements In The Biological Assay Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Calvin Ray Lamborn
Improvements In The Biological Assay Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Calvin Ray Lamborn
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bean plants which were most susceptible to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) were selected from more than 1,000 plant introductions. Thirty-eight percent of the lines tested developed local lesions, an indication of susceptibility to TMV. Six percent were better local lesion hosts than the commonly used bean variety (Pinto). Some lines were nine times more susceptible than the variety Pinto. Selections from P. I. 164353, 165455, 273673, 227379 and 223006 appeared to be the best local lesion hosts. A selection from P. I. 223006 produced lesions which were larger, lighter in color and slower developing than those of any other line …

Gas Chromatographic Determination Of Changes In Concentration Of Pipecolic Acid And Other Free Amino Acids In Hypersensitive Tobacco Plants Induced By Tobacco Mosaic Virus And Temperature, David Francis Brown
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Changes in concentrations of pipecolic acid and other free amino acids in Nicotiana tabacum, L. cv. Xanthi induced by tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) incubated at 75 or 95 F after inoculation were investigated gas chromatographically. A preliminary extraction and gas chromatographic technique for separation and quantitative determination of the free amino acids, using hydroxyproline as an internal standard, was developed.
Amino acids were converted into their trifluoroacetyl n-butyl (TAB) derivatives and gas chromatographed on 0.325 percent ethylene glycol adipate (EGA) columns. Resolution was generally good, but glycine-isoleucine and phenylalanine-aspartic acids were not resolved on old columns. The over-all …

Development Of Eimeria Bovis In Cultured Mammalian Cells, Ronald Fayer
Biology
Cell line and established cell line cultures were tested for their ability to support in vitro development of Eimeria bovis. Among the cell types tested were embryonic bovine kidney, spleen, thymus, testicle, intestine and trachea cells, embryonic human intestine cells, mouse L cells, and Madin-Darby adult bovine kidney cells. Monolayer cell cultures were serially propagated in disposable prescription bottles and transferred to Leighton tubes for use in experiments. Coverslips from Leighton tube cultures inoculated with sporozoites were examined with phase-contrast or Zeiss Nomarski interference contrast microscopy for as long as 21 days after inoculation. After examination, coverslips were fixed …
Local Distribution In A Population Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, Robert Edgar Walker
Local Distribution In A Population Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, Robert Edgar Walker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In an attempt to describe, explain, and show the demographic significance of annual variations in the nesting distribution of Uinta ground squirrels, a study was conducted during the summers of 1964 through 1967 in northern Utah. Procedures included both trapping and direct observation.
It was found that females tended to nest in open, previously inhabited, grassy areas. Males resided throughout a variety of habitats.
This typical nesting distribution was established initially in the summer by juveniles shortly after they first appeared aboveground. The extent to which the distribution was maintained the following spring depended largely upon the number of female …
Effects Of Ripening Processes On Chemistry Of Tomato Volatiles, Bharat Manu Shah
Effects Of Ripening Processes On Chemistry Of Tomato Volatiles, Bharat Manu Shah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Investigations were carried out to isolate, identify, and to characterize, major volatile components of tomato fruit. Simultaneously, the confirmation was extended to the reported tomato volatiles. The volatile extracts from field- and artificially-ripe fruits were compared qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The changes which occurred in the volatile components of the fruit at the onset of senescence also were delineated.
A typical chromatogram from field-ripe tomatoes contained 60 peaks. The functional group properties of individual peaks were derived by chemical analysis. The short-chain (C3-C6) alcohols represented 10 per cent, aldehydes and ketones 32 per cent, and …
Biosynthesis Of Piperidine-2-Carboxylic Acid In Fluoride-Necrotic Glycine Max, Susan S. Martin
Biosynthesis Of Piperidine-2-Carboxylic Acid In Fluoride-Necrotic Glycine Max, Susan S. Martin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Synthesis of piperidine-2-carboxylic acid (pipecolic acid) in soybean was studied by infiltration of radioactive carbon labeled precursor and by experiments using enzyme extracts from control and fluoride-fumigated plants.
Pipecolic acid was synthesized from lysine in both control and treated plants. Normal plants, in which pipecolic acid had not been detected by conventional procedures, were capable of synthesizing pipecolic acid. Greater pipecolic acid synthesis was shown in treated plants than in controls, and was attributed to increased enzyme concentration induced by fluoride treatment.
Computer Analysis Of Consumer Attitude And Consumption Data For Fluid Milk Products, James Reed Fisher
Computer Analysis Of Consumer Attitude And Consumption Data For Fluid Milk Products, James Reed Fisher
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The American public, with a per capita disposable income currently at an all time high, has become a source of vital concern to dairy market researchers. The unique socio-economic structure of the present generation causes the dairy industry to be concerned with how the consumer view its products. Effective education and advertising programs must be developed to attract the taste and meet the demands of the consumer.
Two factors which greatly influence market research and advertising programs are the attitude of the consumer toward a given product and the relationship of attitude to the degree of actual milk consumption. To …

Nutrition During Pregnancy, Lactation And Infancy, Minodokht Froozani
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In many countries in South and East Asia, most diets are defective in quality, even when there is not a severe shortage of food. They do. not provide an adequate quantity of essential nutrients. One of the most severe deficiencies is in good quality protein. The solution to this problem is to produce and provide the right kinds of foods and to establish national food production policies which should make it possible to plan a better balanced diet based on sound nutritional principles and modern knowledge of nutritional requirements. Some degree of undernutrition, over-nutrition, or malnutrition occurs in most European …
Development And Control Of Licking Behavior In The Guinea Pig (Cavia Porcellus), Jack R. Alvord
Development And Control Of Licking Behavior In The Guinea Pig (Cavia Porcellus), Jack R. Alvord
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Four non-licking guinea pigs were reinforced with water for successive approximations to licking an operandum feeder. Once all subjects had obtained their total liquid intake for a three-week period by licking, an optimum deprivation schedule was determined.
Fixed ratio and variable interval schedules were found to affect licking behavior of the guinea pig in a similar way as with the rat, mean lick rate of guinea pigs being slightly lower than that of the rat. Precise control over the onset and offset of licking was demonstrated through discrimination training.

Investigations were carried out to project the food needs of the world population by 2000 A. D., and to explore the possibilities of meeting these requirements.
About 70 percent of the world population presently living in developing countries do not get adequate diets, and suffer from many diseases of under-nutrition and malnutrition. They are unable to increase food production themselves. People in the developed nations have enough food and their food production is increasing at a rate faster than the rate of growth of population.
Cultivable land is the main source of food for man. The seas can also be …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Lactobacillus plantarum has on the physical and chemical properties of fresh and dehydrated sauerkraut was tested. Sauerkraut inoculated with L. plantarum was slower in fermenting and significantly lower in acidity and higher in pH. Dehydration of sauerkraut by freeze-conventional hot-air and micro-wave processes produced a significant loss in volatile components, ascorbic acid , lactic acid and an increase in pH. Each of the dehydration processes caused browning of the sauerkraut . These changes were less with freeze-drying and increased with conventional hot-air drying and microwave drying. Gas-liquid chromatography confirms the loss of volatile components …
