Raffinose In The Sugarbeet (Beta Vulgaris): I. Biosynthesis And Degradation In The Root; Ii. Hydrolysis In Molasses With Sweet Almond Emulsin, Te-Chao Chuang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
PART I
The precursors for the biosynthesis of raffinose in sugarbeets were studied.
An enzyme preparation was obtained from the sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris) root. Incubation of this enzyme with (X-galactose-1-phosphate, Uridine triphosphate (UTP), Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), Magnesium chloride (MgCl2), and L- cysteine at pH 5, 10°c for 6 hours formed a compound which was identified as raffinose by a hydrolysis method and thin- layer chromatography. The same result was obtained when Uridinediphosphate (UDP)-galactose was incubated with sucrose, ATP , MgCl2, and L- cysteine in the presence of the beet enzyme preparation. These reactions suggested …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Honey Sweet carrots were canned with Ethyienediamine tetracetic acid (CaNa2EDTA) and Sodium hexametaphosphate (Ha-HMP) at five different water hardness (0 , 20, 40, 80, 160 ppm of calcium and 20 of magnesium) , then stored at temperatures of 70 and 100 F. Evaluations were made at sixty-day i intervals for six months. Firmness and color degradation decreased significantly when water hardness or storage time increased. Under storage at 100 F and 0 hardness of water, the decrease of color and firmness was constantly accelerated.
When hard water (above 80 ppm or below 40 ppm) was used for …
The Morphological, Anatomical, And Histochemical Effects Of Eptc On Oat Seedlings, Jacinta Yu-Rui Lee
The Morphological, Anatomical, And Histochemical Effects Of Eptc On Oat Seedlings, Jacinta Yu-Rui Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Morphological, anatomical, and histochemical effects of S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC) on Avena sativa var. overland were studied after treatment of seeds at various EPTC concentrations.
The oat seed germination percentage was not affected by EPTC treatment. EPTC delayed initial root and coleoptile development at all concentrations used. Two or three days after treatment, however, the roots of seedlings treated with EPTC concentrations lower than 3 ppm grew at the same rate as the untreated seedlings and showed no abnormalities. Primary and adventitious root growth of seedlings treated with 3 ppm and higher was inhibited. Most of the adventitious roots remained in …

Selected Physio-Chemical, Microbiological, And Agronomical Studies On The Controlled Atmosphere Storage Of Sugarbeet (Beta Vulgaris) Roots, Vinod V. Karnik
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The post-harvest physiology of sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris) roots was studied during controlled atmosphere (CA) storage at 35° and 50°F. Zero, 3, 6 and 10% carbon dioxide and 5% oxygen concentrations were employed to investigate the most beneficial concentrations of gases. Under the experimental conditions beets were stored successfully for 200 days. The maximum beneficial effects of CA were observed under 6% carbon dioxide and 5% oxygen at 35°F. Regardless of storage temperatures, sucrose retention was highest in the beets stored under CA, compared to conventional refrigeration (CR). Other beneficial effects include less hydrolysis of sucrose to reducing sugars …
Bench Marks From Which Economic Change Can Be Measured For An Altiplano Community, Roberto Julio Gonzalez
Bench Marks From Which Economic Change Can Be Measured For An Altiplano Community, Roberto Julio Gonzalez
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis is designed to establish bench marks which will facilitate the measurement of impacts of new crop and livestock extension practices on the rate of community development of the village of Achica Bajo, Bolivia. Successful agricultural extension and community development programs require adequate data at the farm and community level. In the absence of a real appreciation for the levels of income and financial needs of the campesinos, it is difficult to institute farm policies such as land tax measures which will have the desired impacts and consequences as well as peasant acceptance.
The study examines human and …
A Forecast Of Iranian Demand For Agricultural Food Products, Ivan F. Beutler
A Forecast Of Iranian Demand For Agricultural Food Products, Ivan F. Beutler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Domestic demand for Iranian agricultural food commodities was projected for 1970, 1975 and 1980. Demand for particular commodities was projected separately for Tehran (the capital city), urban Iran and rural Iran.
Income and population growth were the most significant explanatory variables in this long term projection.
Two cross-sectional family budget surveys, taken six years apart, provided consumption data for Tehran and urban Iran. A series of family budget studies provided Engel curve data for rural Iran.
The income effect was estimated for each food item by least squares regression analysis. The resulting income elasticities were found to be significantly different …

An Investigation Of The Mode Of Action Of 2-Chloro-N-Isopropylacetanilide, Nirmal S. Dhillon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Corn (Zea mays L.) seedlings possessed a high degree of tolerance to growth inhibitory effects of pre-emergent application of 2-chloro-N-isopropylacetanilide (propachlor), squash (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne) was intermediate in its response to the herbicide followed by oats (Avena sativa L.), lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) and redroot (Amaranthus retroflexus L.). Root growth was more severely retarded by lower concentrations of propachlor than was stem development.
Propachlor inhibited cell division in onion (Allium cepa L.) root tips. Aberrations in the mitotic behavior, such as contraction of chromosomes, was also induced. Cell elongation, in particular auxin …

The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart
The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart
Faculty Honor Lectures
Before discussing parasitic bees, I will present a rough outline of the biology of "ordinary" or non-parasitic bees. The superfamily Apoidea (bees) includes perhaps 25,000 or 30,000 species divided into nine families by recent authorities (Stephen, Bohart, Torchio, 1969) . A common biological thread holding this vast assemblage together is the provision by adults of pollen and nectar for their young. Only in the honey bees (the genus Apis which includes four species) are the larvae fed primarily on a different substance (a secretion of the pharyngeal glands) , and even this is derived from pollen and honey eaten by …
