The Effects Of Real Exchange Rate Depreciation On Stochastic Producer Prices, Christopher B. Barrett Jan 1995

The Effects Of Real Exchange Rate Depreciation On Stochastic Producer Prices, Christopher B. Barrett

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper considers the effects of real exchange rate depreciation on stochastic agricultural producer prices. The conventional wisdom, that real depreciation stimulates tradables production, does not hold when one admits price uncertainty and producer income risk aversion. In fact, real depreciation only yields a stiinulative price signal (in the Sandmo sense of higher mean, lower variance) in the case of a partiGular subset of nontradables, "nontraditional exports" which have indeed responded vigorously to contemporary depreciation episodes. GARCH estimation of time..series price data on several commodities from Madagascar support the hypotheses generated by the analytical model.

Fairness, Stewardship, And Sustainable Development, Christopher B. Barrett Jan 1995

Fairness, Stewardship, And Sustainable Development, Christopher B. Barrett

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The welfare economic concept of fairness offers an attractive, axiomatic foundation for the popular notion of stewardship. Fairness emphasizes the ex ante equal standing of all persons, across and within generations. This highlights the inextricability of poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability, especially in the agrarian tropics where biodiversity loss, deforestation, and desertification are growing global concerns.

Reliability Of Human Fresh And Frozen Gingiva Explant Culture In Assessing Dental Materials Cytocompatibility, R. Warocquier-Clerout, G. C. Hachom-Nitcheu, M. F. Sigot-Luizard Jan 1995

Reliability Of Human Fresh And Frozen Gingiva Explant Culture In Assessing Dental Materials Cytocompatibility, R. Warocquier-Clerout, G. C. Hachom-Nitcheu, M. F. Sigot-Luizard

Cells and Materials

An explant culture of human gingival epithelium has been set up in order to provide a valuable test for evaluating the cytocompatibility of dental material s. In an attempt to supply a bank of gingiva ex plants, frozen and freshly excised specimens were cultured in parallel. Optical and scanning electron microscopy showed an early release of cuboidal cells forming a dense layer around the explants. Afterwards, cultures evolved differently . Spread cells grew and migrated more rap idly in fresh than in frozen explant cultures but their adhesion to substratum increased earlier in frozen ones. Epithelial phenotype of cells had …

Bone Absorptiometry In Metabolic Bone Disease: Baseline Values And Long-Term Treatment With Calcitriol (Post-Menopausal Osteoporosis Versus Osteomalacia), A. Caniggia, B. Frediani Jan 1995

Bone Absorptiometry In Metabolic Bone Disease: Baseline Values And Long-Term Treatment With Calcitriol (Post-Menopausal Osteoporosis Versus Osteomalacia), A. Caniggia, B. Frediani

Cells and Materials

Total body bone absorptiometry reveals low mineral density in both postmenopausal osteoporosis and osteomalacia patients. The method was used to investigate the effect of calcitriol administration on patients suffering from one of these conditions. In osteomalacia, the administration of calcitriol resulted in a dramatic improvement in bone mineral density (sometimes up to 50% in 12 months), indicating the rapid mineralization of previously uncalcified bone tissue as a result of the normalization of the Ca x P product. In osteoporosis a similar treatment was seen to halt the progressive decrease in bone mineral levels and sometimes resulted in minor increases in …

The Microeconomics Of Coalition Alignments: Some Insights On Food Price Policy, Christopher B. Barrett Jan 1995

The Microeconomics Of Coalition Alignments: Some Insights On Food Price Policy, Christopher B. Barrett

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper concerns the objective alignment of individuals' material interests into groupings for collective action, and how these groupings vary with economic structure and in response to previous periods' policy choices. It establishes analytically the microeconomic basis for coalition alignments with respect to food price policy, then numerically simulates the comparative static effects of alternative food policies on coalition structure. A parsimonious household model applied to a heterogeneously endowed society demonstrates the inherent inextricability of price policy from land, population, and technology policies in food agriculture. Moreover, coalition alignments on particular policy debates are path-dependent.

Urban Bias In Price Risk: The Geography Of Food Price Distributions In Low-Income Economies, Christopher B. Barrett Jan 1995

Urban Bias In Price Risk: The Geography Of Food Price Distributions In Low-Income Economies, Christopher B. Barrett

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The geography of agricultural marketing has important implications for the stochastic distribution of agricultural commodity prices. This paper proposes that objective food price risk differs between rural and urban areas of infrastructure-poor economies characterized by spatially concentrated patterns of foodgrains storage. This difference implies an urban bias having adverse welfare effects for peasants who seasonally switch between net food seller and net food buyer positions. Empirical analysis of rice price data from Madagascar suggests that price variability and skewness indeed differ between rural and urban areas in ways that adversely influence the relative welfare of rural peasants.
