Ethylene Synthesis And Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Stephen P. Klassen, Bruce Bugbee Jan 2002

Ethylene Synthesis And Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Stephen P. Klassen, Bruce Bugbee

NASA

Closed and semi-closed plant growth chambers have long been used in studies of plant and crop physiology. These studies include the measurement of photosynthesis and transpiration via photosynthetic gas exchange. Unfortunately, other gaseous products of plant metabolism can accumulate in these chambers and cause artifacts in the measurements. The most important of these gaseous by products is the plant hormone ethylene (C2H4). In spite of hundreds of manuscripts on ethylene, we still have a limited understanding of the synthesis rates throughout the plant life cycle. We also have a poor understanding of the sensitivity of intact, rapidly growing plants to …

Clipping Management And Nitrogen Fertilization Of Turfgrass: Growth, Nitrogen Utilization, And Quality, Kelly Kopp, Karl Guillard Jan 2002

Clipping Management And Nitrogen Fertilization Of Turfgrass: Growth, Nitrogen Utilization, And Quality, Kelly Kopp, Karl Guillard

CWEL Publications

The effect of returning grass clippings on turfgrass growth and quality has not been thoroughly examined. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of returning grass clippings in combination with varying N rates on growth, N utilization, and quality of turfgrass managed as a residential lawn. Two field experiments using a cool-season turfgrassmixturewere arranged as a 2_4 factorial in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Treatments included two clipping management practices (returned or removed) and four N rates (equivalent to 0, 98, 196, and 392 kg N ha_1 ). Soils at the two sites were …

Recreation Gps As A Low-Cost Alternative For Introductory Courses In Natural Reaources, Jason Payne, Glenn P. Catts, Richard A. Lancia, Brent Lineberger Jan 2002

Recreation Gps As A Low-Cost Alternative For Introductory Courses In Natural Reaources, Jason Payne, Glenn P. Catts, Richard A. Lancia, Brent Lineberger

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has proven reliable for collecting spatial data for integration into a computer-based Geographic Information System (GIS). However, high cost often prohibits the purchase of individual GPS units for each student in a class. Recent advances in technology coupled with decreasing prices have made recreational GPS a low-cost alternative for introductory courses in Natural Resource Management. These units utilize 12-channel receivers, range in price from $115 to $500, and exhibit a point-location accuracy within 14 meters 95% of the time (6.2m - 66% of the time). Although recreational units lack the capacity for differential correction through …

Proteolytic Specificity Of Lactobacillus Delbrueckii Subsp. Bulgaricus Influences Functional Properties Of Mozzarella Cheese, B. S. Oommen, Donald J. Mcmahon, C. J. Oberg, Jeff Broadbent, M. Strickland Jan 2002

Proteolytic Specificity Of Lactobacillus Delbrueckii Subsp. Bulgaricus Influences Functional Properties Of Mozzarella Cheese, B. S. Oommen, Donald J. Mcmahon, C. J. Oberg, Jeff Broadbent, M. Strickland

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Low-moisture part-skim Mozzarella cheeses were manufactured from 2% fat milk and aged for 21 d. Treatments included cheeses made with one of three different strains of Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus in combination with a single strain of Streptococcus thermophilus. A fourth, control treatment consisted of cheeses made with only S. thermophilus. Although total proteolytic ability of these strains, as indicated by the o-phthaldialdehyde analysis, was similar in each of the three strains of L. bulgaricus, these strains exhibited different proteolytic specificities toward the peptide, αs1-CN (f 1-23). On the basis of their αs1-CN (f 1-23) cleavage patterns …

Risk Mapping For Northern Kenya And Southern Ethiopia, D. Layne Coppock Dec 2001

Risk Mapping For Northern Kenya And Southern Ethiopia, D. Layne Coppock

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

We used results from 120 group interviews collected in 1998 to quantify how inhabitants across northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia perceive and rank various risks to their livelihoods. We also mapped risk patterns using Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates. Respondents recognized 15 sources of risk overall, with the most common being reliable access to food and water. Other risks were not mentioned by a majority of respondents and reflected diversity in local situations. Country of residence, wealth class, gender, and predominant means of food production (pastoralism, agro-pastoralism, and farming) influenced risk ranking. For example, wealthy males were most concerned about …

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Crystallization Behavior Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel Nov 2001

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Crystallization Behavior Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of cooling rate (slow: 0.1°C/min; fast: 5.5°C/min) on the crystallization kinetics of blends of a highmelting milk fat fraction and sunflower oil (SFO) was investigated by pulsed NMR and DSC. For slow cooling rate, the majority of crystallization had already occurred by the time the set crystallization temperature had been reached. For fast cooling rate, crystallization started after the samples reached the selected crystallization temperature, and the solid fat content curves were hyperbolic. DSC scans showed that at slow cooling rates, molecular organization took place as the sample was being cooled to crystallization temperature and there was fractionation …

Vaccination Program For Beef Calves (2001 - Clell Bagley), Clell Bagley Oct 2001

Vaccination Program For Beef Calves (2001 - Clell Bagley), Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Vaccines are an important tool to use in herd health programs for the protection of animal health. However, vaccines do not prevent all disease by themselves, and should be used in conjunction with good management practices. The timing of vaccination and selection of product are important considerations.
