Selected Insecticides In The Control Of Invertebrates Possibly Associated With Avian Botulism, J. Larry Haddock May 1962

Selected Insecticides In The Control Of Invertebrates Possibly Associated With Avian Botulism, J. Larry Haddock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Avian botulism or ''western duck sickness" has long been a major problem on duck marshes in the western part of the United States. This has been demonstrated to result from the ingestion of products of metabolism of bacterial cells of Clostridium botulinum type C. These products when ingested by waterfowl act as neurotoxins (Coburn, 1942). Studies have shown that many animal tissues are readily utilized as culture media by Cl. botulinum type C (Bell et al., 1955).

Since 1955 investigations have indicated a close relation between the occurrence of avian botulism and invertebrate population levels. It is thought that when …

An Economic Analysis Of The Retail Raw Milk Industry In The State Of Utah, H. Kent Dewsnup

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For 98 years after the first "Mormon" pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley there was no statewide control of the sale and distribution of fluid milk. Prior to any statewide control, however, laws were passed in Salt Lake City and Ogden outlawing sale of raw milk to final consumers in those cities as of January 1, 1945.

An Evaluation Of Antibiotics Upon Selected Dairy Organisms, Roy Brog May 1962

An Evaluation Of Antibiotics Upon Selected Dairy Organisms, Roy Brog

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was designed to answer a three-fold purpose. Primarily, it has endeavored to measure the inhibitory effect of three antibiotics (potassium pencillin, dihydrostreptomycin, and oxytetracycline) on lactic acid producing organisms. The lactic acid-producing organisms include Streptococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilis, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus.

The determination of an effective dose of a given antibiotic which will inhibit 50 percent of the lactic acid-producing organism (E.D.50) will be established. A 50 percent cut in acid development will certainly lead to an inferior product.

The secondary purpose has related to the detection of inhibitory substances (antibiotics) in milk. What is …

The Effect Of Chelates On Phosphorus Availability And Mobility, Salah Ahmed Tahoun May 1962

The Effect Of Chelates On Phosphorus Availability And Mobility, Salah Ahmed Tahoun

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Soil-phosphorus relations and plant-phosphorus relations have attracted the interest of many investigators since Liebig introduced his famous theory about the importance of the mineral matters to the plant in 1840. It was soon realized that phosphorus nutrition was a problem not easily solved for two reasons. 1. The added phosphorus fertilizers, soon after soil application are converted by some reactions in the soil to complex compounds far less soluble, consequently less available to the plant. Conclusions about this process led to controversial debates until it was discovered that a general statement covering all soils was impossible since the reactions involved …

The Comparison Of Bacteriophage Sensitivity Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkeys, Turkey Processors, And Dairy Workers, Daryl Eugene Peterson May 1961

The Comparison Of Bacteriophage Sensitivity Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkeys, Turkey Processors, And Dairy Workers, Daryl Eugene Peterson

Biology

There have been several surveys made throughout the State of Utah that indicate the presence of staphylococcal synovitis in many of the turkey flocks. Bagley (1949) and Blommer (1950) indicated that from 1947 to 1949, there was a widespread occurrence of the disease throughout the State. Dr. M. L. Miner (1960), Head of the Department of Veterinary Science (Utah State University), indicated that staphylococcal synovitis in turkeys has actually been continuous in Utah since the late nineteen-"thirties." Staphylococcus aureus was found by Prahl (1891) to be the etiologic agent of this synovitis in geese. Synovitis may occur in many other …

An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey May 1961

An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem of what kinds of music provide the most meaning for the young child has long been a concern of the author. It arises not only out of close experience with young children, but also out of a concern for the responsibility of providing them with meaningful aesthetic experiences. From this background of experience the problem is not purely an academic one. Its first and ultimate concern is an experiential one. Because it arises out of this particular background, the analysis of the problem and its study is less concerned with academic and scientific validity than might otherwise have …

Studies On Acceptability And Refrigerated-Life Of Certain Gamma-Irradiated Fresh Strawberries And Cherries, Norma Ward Pierson May 1961

Studies On Acceptability And Refrigerated-Life Of Certain Gamma-Irradiated Fresh Strawberries And Cherries, Norma Ward Pierson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the beginning of time, the history of man has been his struggle to obtain food. After many thousands of years, this is still a major problem which confronts the peoples of the earth. Although much food is available on earth, a great deal never benefits mankind because of deterioration and spoilage. Various kinds of spoilage cause a million tons of grain to be wasted each year. Man has learned to control and overcome some of these destructive forced through a variety of methods of food preservation. Some forms of preservation such as drying, salting, and so forth, probably have …

The Influence Of Temperature On The Impedance To Water Flow Through Plants, Royal Duane Jensen May 1961

The Influence Of Temperature On The Impedance To Water Flow Through Plants, Royal Duane Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This era has been termed the atomic or space age. The greatest concern of most people seems to be centered around survival from the destruction and suffering that might be caused by atomic and nuclear weapons. However, along with this, the world is confronted with perhaps a greater disaster--a potential calamity seldom realized by most people, yet a problem which grows more serious in the world each year--a tragedy which would probably be worse than destruction from nuclear weapons. This encroaching catastrophe is starvation.

Even today the majority of the people in the world do not have enough food. Each …

The Use Of Tetrazolium As A Measure Of The Salt Tolerance Of Alfalfa, Daryl A. Freter May 1961

The Use Of Tetrazolium As A Measure Of The Salt Tolerance Of Alfalfa, Daryl A. Freter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The task of obtaining and selecting plants which may not only survive under salty conditions, but grow and produce satisfactory yields is varied and complex. It is becoming necessary to select and breed crops for salt tolerance. Plants can be grown in artificially constructed salt basins to test their individual salt tolerance, but this takes time, at least one year. It would be desirable to develop a rapid test to determine the salt tolerance of a given plant. The use of a dye in conjunction with a series of salt solutions has been suggested for determining the salt tolerance of …

A Comparison Of The Salt Hardiness Of Barley, Petunia, And Tomato When Grown In Saline And Nonsaline Substrates, James Louis Wright May 1961

A Comparison Of The Salt Hardiness Of Barley, Petunia, And Tomato When Grown In Saline And Nonsaline Substrates, James Louis Wright

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The excessive accumulation of salt in the root zone of plants is a problem which is widespread in area, increasing in magnitude, and limiting in its effect upon productivity. Accumulation of salt in the rhizosphere has an effect upon moisture availability for plant use, the nutritional balance of the essential elements, and causes a reduction in plant growth with toxicity often resulting. When plants grow on substrates high in salt, the salt content of the plant also increases. This uptake of salt often results in changes in the morphology of the plant. Accumulation of salt within the plant cells interferes …

Self Evaluation Of A Selected Group Of Teen Marriages, Margaret L. Stone May 1960

Self Evaluation Of A Selected Group Of Teen Marriages, Margaret L. Stone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The statistical trend toward an increasing number of early marriages in the United States is causing concern for parents and community officials (21). The average age of marriage has been declining since 1890. Half of the girls are now married by the time they are twenty and half of the men by the time they are twenty-three (13). In a study made by Landis (20) of marriages in California high schools, 90 percent of the senior high schools reported one or more student marriages. Similar statistics have been reported in New Mexico (16) and Oregon (18). Research has pointed an …

Studies On The Relationship Of Moisture Content To Threshability And Viability Of Pea Seeds, Filixberto Roquia Y Dulalas May 1960

Studies On The Relationship Of Moisture Content To Threshability And Viability Of Pea Seeds, Filixberto Roquia Y Dulalas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

When in commercial practice seed peas (Pisum sativum) are harvested, the vines are cut and windrowed or bunched and allowed to cure for a week or longer, depending upon the moisture content of the crop and weather conditions. The sooner the crop can be threshed, the less is the chance of loss caused by rain and the often-necessary attendant operation of turning the windrow or bunch to facilitate drying. In general, growers wait until the vines, pods, and seeds are quite dry. To what extent this is necessary is not known.

Studies In Iron Chlorosis Of Leaves, Narayan Gunderao Perur May 1960

Studies In Iron Chlorosis Of Leaves, Narayan Gunderao Perur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Normal healthy growth and development of plants is controlled by certain factors known as factors of plant growth. They are soil, climate, and plant inheritance. The soil contains many nutrient elements needed by plants both in macro and micro quantities. Iron is one of the essential elements required by plants in small amounts.

When plants are starving for any of the essential nutrients, characteristic symptoms usually appear as certain abnormalities, discoloration and deformation of leaves, fruits, and other parts. The deficiency symptoms, though not easily recognizable in some cases at the beginning, are quite apparent in advanced stages of plant …

Interaction Of Riboflavin With Molybdenum, Jacques Tocatlian May 1960

Interaction Of Riboflavin With Molybdenum, Jacques Tocatlian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Molybdenum may function as a catalyst in promoting and controlling some of the complex chemical reactions that go on in living systems. The lack of understanding which exists about these reactions is due to their obvious complexity and to the extremely minute quantities of molybdenum involved. Traces of molybdenum have been shown to have spectacular results on the growth of plants when added to certain soils. This metal is also required for the growth of azobacter, the nitrogen-fixing bacteria (1).

Molybdenum has been shown to be present in four enzymes: nitrate reductase (2), hydrogenase (3), xanthine oxidase (4) and aldehyde …

A Morphological Description Of The Trichomonad Found In The Stomach Of Swine, Floyd M. Caskey May 1959

A Morphological Description Of The Trichomonad Found In The Stomach Of Swine, Floyd M. Caskey

Biology

As far as is known, no morphological study of the stomach trichomonads of swine has been made. The majority of investigators have assumed that the trichomonads found in the cecum and stomach are identical. It has been reported that the nasal form is different from that of the cecum and that the nasal form is simlar to Trichomonas foetus. The relationships among the trichomonads from these three locations have yet to be determined.

The Influence Of An Artificial Medium Upon The Morphology Of Swine Cecal Trichomonads, Charles P. Hibler May 1959

The Influence Of An Artificial Medium Upon The Morphology Of Swine Cecal Trichomonads, Charles P. Hibler

Biology

As yet no thorough studies of the trichomonads living in the cecum of swine have been made. In fresh preparations the trichomonads from the nose, stomach, and cecum appear distinct. After a period of cultivation In an artificial medium, however, the flagellates from the cecum became morphologically similar to the cultured porcine nasal and stomach trichomonads. The cultivation of the trichomonads from the cecum apparently results in either a morphological change in the trichomonad or in a selection among different species or types present in the cecum.
