Reining In The Patent Troll: Lessons The United States Can Learn From Its Northern Neighbors, Megan Petras May 2026

Reining In The Patent Troll: Lessons The United States Can Learn From Its Northern Neighbors, Megan Petras

Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review

In patent law, non-practicing entities (NPEs) are patent holders who do not practice their patented invention. In recent years, there has been concern over a particular type of NPE, the patent troll. Patent trolls are said to harm innovation because they do not come up with any new ideas themselves, but instead buy up patents cheaply, find potential infringers, and threaten litigation to receive large settlements or damage awards. Interestingly, the patent troll problem is considered to be primarily a problem in the United States. While comparisons have been made between the existence of patent trolls in the European Un-ion …

Realizing The Long Wavelength Array Swarm, Craig Anthony Taylor May 2026

Realizing The Long Wavelength Array Swarm, Craig Anthony Taylor

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Sensitive modern radio interferometers are costly to build and operate at the university level. The `swarm telescope' concept addresses this challenge by enabling the collaborative use of individual telescope systems, overseen by separate institutions, that come together to form a more powerful and manageable facility. This dissertation focuses on demonstrating this concept using the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) by commissioning an aperture synthesis telescope consisting of interconnected LWA stations, called the LWA Swarm. The presented work details building a cost-efficient prototype LWA platform -- the LWA--North Arm station -- to enable synthesis imaging using the 3-element interferometer comprised of LWA1, …

The goal of this survey was to better understand how these changes compares to other related services providers and their goals of collaboration, when working with individuals with disabilities. A survey was disseminated …

A Colonial Past Revisited: An Authethnography Of Outsider And Insider Identities In Indigenous Education Communities, Tara L. Deyoung May 2026

A Colonial Past Revisited: An Authethnography Of Outsider And Insider Identities In Indigenous Education Communities, Tara L. Deyoung

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

In the late 90s, at Rehoboth Christian school, a small private boarding school in northwest New Mexico, I had four different English teachers in my four years of high school. All but two of my teachers at that time would be considered outsiders to the community in which they taught. Teacher outsiders leave schools and districts at higher rates than insiders to a community; this is especially true for rural and remote areas (Hudson et al., 2020). The purpose of this autoethnographic study is to analyze my history as a cultural outsider and insider in relation to my core beliefs …

Saying “Yes, And” To A Changing Legal Profession Through Improv, Ben Bratman May 2026

Saying “Yes, And” To A Changing Legal Profession Through Improv, Ben Bratman

The Journal of Law Teaching and Learning

As legal practitioners confront the potent impacts of society’s latest technological innovation, legal education can and should say “yes, and” to all the change and uncertainty by leaning into the teaching of human skills. That’s “yes, and,” as in the guiding principle of improvisational theater, or improv. As a form of embodied learning through play, improv exercises are a proven tool for building and refining fundamental human skills, often called the “soft” skills, within a low-stakes learning environment. They can and should be a part of any law school’s effort to graduate confident and skilled communicators who are strong team …

Divided By Truth: Legislative Consequences Of Presidential Signaling On Social Media, Christian D. Pereira May 2026

Divided By Truth: Legislative Consequences Of Presidential Signaling On Social Media, Christian D. Pereira

Bryant University Undergraduate Journal

How does presidential communication on social media shape legislative behavior in Congress? While presidents have traditionally been seen as capable of mobilizing coalitions through public appeals, this dynamic may no longer hold in the contemporary media environment. Focusing on posts from President Donald Trump’s platform, Truth Social, we examine whether presidential commentary referencing Congress affects subsequent legislative activity. Drawing on theories of agenda setting and elite signaling, we argue that visible presidential communication increases the partisan salience of issues and alters legislators’ incentives. Using an original dataset of Trump’s Truth Social posts merged with measures of congressional activity, we find …

Remaking Buford Highway: Immigration And The Struggle For Walkable Suburbia, Amit Kamma May 2026

Remaking Buford Highway: Immigration And The Struggle For Walkable Suburbia, Amit Kamma

Harvey M. Applebaum ’59 Award

Constructed according to a car-centric vision typical of American suburbs, one segment of Buford Highway outside Atlanta has become a corridor defined by immigrants who often walk and use public transit. These behaviors conflict with the existing car-focused infrastructure, compelling government actors to make the Highway more multimodal. Progress towards that goal is ongoing and precarious, demonstrating wider systemic challenges in U.S. planning and local governance.

Understanding Counselor Burnout From An Ecological Systems Perspective, Stephanie Thorson-Olesen, Lisa Belknap, Emily Velidow, Jessica Gaul, Phoenix Rosewood, Nayara Aparecida Da Costa Silva Beall

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Using Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory as a guiding framework, this study explored the experiences of licensed counselors who self-identified as having recovered from burnout. Burnout was conceptualized as a prolonged response to chronic occupational stress, while participants were invited to describe their experiences based on their own lived understandings of the phenomenon. A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted using data collected through an anonymous online survey featuring open-ended prompts. Participants included 32 licensed counselors who graduated from CACREP-accredited programs and reported previously experiencing burnout and no longer identifying as currently burned out. Thematic analysis yielded nine interrelated themes encompassing contributors, …

Counseling Supervision In Vocational Rehabilitation: An Integration And Extension Of The Discrimination Model And Critical Disability Theory, Nichole Tichy, Harvey C. Peters

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

As a specialized counseling discipline, vocational rehabilitation aims to support individuals with disabilities in obtaining integrated and competitive employment within their communities. Within the rehabilitation counseling profession, the practice of clinical supervision is considered an essential function of the job; however, most professionals report inadequate or nonexistent supervision within their professional settings. Research on this topic is scarce, and few clinical supervision models exist specific to the needs of rehabilitation counselors. In this manuscript, we present an adaptation of the discrimination model for counselors that incorporates vocational rehabilitation and critical disability theory to encourage the challenging and dismantling of ableism. …

Navigating The Borderlands: Testimonios Of First-Generation Chicanas In Counselor Education, Jessenia Garcia, Heather Trepal

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

This research applies Anzaldúa’s (1987) Borderlands Theory to examine the testimonios of first-generation Chicana faculty in counselor education. A narrative methodology was employed (n=10), leading to the identification of several themes that illuminate their unique challenges and resilience. Four themes emerged: (a) balancing worlds: family and academia, (b) weaving identity into academia, (c) cultural identity in the borderlands, and (d) disrupting borders, including the subtheme: Red tape and higher ed mafia. These findings provide insight into the institutional barriers and identity navigation experienced by these faculty members. Recommendations for recruitment and retention are included.

Llm-Driven Dynamical Adaptation Of Window Layout Based On Available Displays, Aurélien Pomini, Nicolas Zimmermann May 2026

Llm-Driven Dynamical Adaptation Of Window Layout Based On Available Displays, Aurélien Pomini, Nicolas Zimmermann

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described for automatic inference of window layouts based on available displays, e.g., based on detecting connection or disconnection of an auxiliary display. Upon detection of a change in display configuration, contextual information regarding active applications, window metadata, and display parameters is obtained, with user permission. Application categories are determined based on semantic analysis. An on-device large language model is utilized to determine an optimal arrangement of windows across the available displays based on the aggregated context and historical usage patterns. Windows are automatically moved and/or resized according to the inferred layout.

Privacy-Preserving Generative Inpainting, Tamar Yakar, Ilia Labzovsky May 2026

Privacy-Preserving Generative Inpainting, Tamar Yakar, Ilia Labzovsky

Defensive Publications Series

People frequently capture images in public or semi-public settings (e.g., schools, parks, parties) that include incidental subjects and may share such images with others. The person that captures such images may not have consent from such incidental subjects to publish such images. This disclosure describes generative augmentation techniques that preserve privacy for digital media. Incidental subjects (bystanders) in photographs are automatically protected prior to social sharing. Unlike conventional redaction methods (blurring/pixelation) which degrade visual fidelity, or manual object removal which alters the scene's composition, the techniques semantically substitute unauthorized subjects with context-appropriate, non-identifiable synthetic elements. The synthetic elements can be …

Thereafter, the present disclosure suggests generating an intermediate data structure for each normalized merchant entity key and for each selected attribute …

Personal Significance Scores For Images, Ashwin Goyal May 2026

Personal Significance Scores For Images, Ashwin Goyal

Defensive Publications Series

The true significance of a particular photograph (or video) to a user is difficult to discern in an automatic manner directly from photo pixels (and/or metadata) because there is context beyond the photograph that cannot be determined from pixels alone. This disclosure describes techniques, implemented with user permission, that provide a reliable indicator for the significance of an image using the statistics, telemetry, and metadata relating to action categories such as the capture, curation, consumption, connection, and culling of the image. The techniques generate a personal significance score (PSS) normalized to the range (0.0, 1.0) leverage user behavior with reference …
