In Vivo And In Vitro Excystation And Description Of The Sporulated Oocysts Of Some Bovine Coccidia, Peter A. Nyberg
In Vivo And In Vitro Excystation And Description Of The Sporulated Oocysts Of Some Bovine Coccidia, Peter A. Nyberg
Biology
Excystation, as applied to the coccidia, is the mechanism by which sporozoites are released from sporocysts and oocysts. This process has been investigated both in vivo and in vitro, in poultry, rabbits, and sheep. Some work has been done with bovine coccidia, but excystation in vitro has not been reported.
Experimental Study Of Tissue Eosinophil Transformation, Ferrell R. Campbell
Experimental Study Of Tissue Eosinophil Transformation, Ferrell R. Campbell
Biology
An increase in the number of eosinophilic leukocytes has long been recognized as an integral part of the cellular response of the body to parenterally introduced foreign proteins. Although the function of eosinophils is poorly understood, high eosinophil counts have been associated with the antigen-antibody reactions resulting either directly or indirectly from hypersensitivity.

A Morphological And Cultural Study Of Trichomonads And Other Flagellates Of The Bovine Digestive Tract, Emron A. Jensen
Biology
The trichomonads of the bovine digestive tract are incompletely known and the taxonomy of the described species is not clear. Two species, Trichomonas enteris (Christl) and T. bovis (Pavlov and Dimitrov) from the lower digestive tract of cattle have been described, although the descriptions in both cases were not complete. A species of flagellates of the rumen has been known since 1913; it has been called a trichomonad by some authors and a monocercomonad by others.

The Site Of The Immune Reaction Against Eimeria Bovis In Calves And The Demonstration Of Antibodies By Immunofluorescence, Ferron L. Andersen
The Site Of The Immune Reaction Against Eimeria Bovis In Calves And The Demonstration Of Antibodies By Immunofluorescence, Ferron L. Andersen
Biology
In 1959 Senger et al. reported that calves which had received a small oral inoculation of Eimeria bovis oocysts were later resistant to larger challenge inoculations. In an investigation on the mechanism of this immune reaction, Hammond et al. (1959) compared the number and size of E. bovis schizonts in immunized and nonimmunized calves, but found no significant difference in the results. They conducted 3 experiments using 28 young male Holstein-Friesian calves, and killed the majority of these calves for examination 17 to 20 days after the challenge inoculation.

The Effect Of Monosodium Glutamate As A Possible Mutagen On The Compound Eye Of Drosophila Melanogaster, N. Roger Hawkes
Biology
Phenotypes of Drosophila can be altered by subjecting developing larvae to changes in environment. Such environmental changes may be temperature shocks, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemically altered media. Most alterations in phenotype are not inherited, and may resemble the effects produced by known mutant genes. Such alterations are called phenocopies.

The water resources of the State of Utah are rapidly being developed for agriculture and industry. They are so extensively exploited that their continued and additional use must be justified on the basis of need and efficiency of utilization. To determine more accurately the quantity and quality of water needed to operate a marsh, a project was undertaken by the Utah Department of Fish and Game, the Engineering Experiment Station and the Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at Utah State University. The study was divided into the two phases, one on quantity and one on quality of water. The present report …

Biosynthesis Of Infectious Cucumber Mosaic Virus Ribonucleic Acid In A Cell-Free Medium, Men Hui Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The mechanism of biosynthesis of the nucleic acids, RNA, remained obscure until 1955 when the announcement was made (14) that an enzyme isolated from bacterial sources catalyzes the synthesis of ribopolynucleotides from nucleoside-5'-diphosphates. It has been shown that the biosynthesis of polynucleotides occurs through the stepwise polymerization of nucleoside-5'-diphosphates or triphosphates. A great deal of research over the past few years has indicated that isolated nuclei from both animal (1) and plant (19) sources are able to synthesize ribonucleic acids in vitro (18).

An Analysis Of Class Size, Teaching Load, And Instructional Salary Costs In Utah State-Supported Collegiate Institutions Of Higher Education, Don K. Richards
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is generally recognized that the State of Utah attempts to provide schooling to a higher proportion of youth than other states in the nation. Utah has the largest proportion of high school graduates (50 per cent) in its adult population, and also the highest median school years completed (12.2 years) by adults 25 years old and older. These are some of the highlights of the 1961 edition of the "Rankings of the States," an annual publication in which the National Education Association compares all 50 states in terms of educational effort and achievement.
The Nitrification Of Ammonium Sulfate In Polyethylene Bags In The Field And Laboratory, Carlos Dean Smith
The Nitrification Of Ammonium Sulfate In Polyethylene Bags In The Field And Laboratory, Carlos Dean Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There are many advantages and some disadvantages associated with the fall application of nitrogen fertilizers. The advantages of applying fertilizer at this time appear very convincing. It is easier to get onto the land in the fall. During the fall, farmers usually have more time to apply fertilizer than they do in the spring. In the fall the fertilizer companies offer better services. This is because the fall application of fertilizer lengthens out their season, thus making it possible for them to handle more fertilizer.
The main disadvantage is the fact that it is possible to lose the fall-applied nitrogen …
Nitrogen Effect On Cation Exchange Capacity Of Plant Roots, Kamilia Shoukry Mohamed Shoukry
Nitrogen Effect On Cation Exchange Capacity Of Plant Roots, Kamilia Shoukry Mohamed Shoukry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The relationships that exist between soil and plant are very complicated and have aroused man's curiosity for centuries. Many studies have been done in order to understand and clarify this relation. Among these is the hypothesis that plant roots exhibit cation exchange capacity (CEC) and that this is in some way responsible for differential cation uptake . The CEC of the roots was defined by Helmy (l958a) as the total cations which can be exchanged or replaced from the root surface under a given set of conditions and is usually expressed as milli-equivalents per 100 grams (me/100 g) of dry …

Nitrite Reactions In Soil, John Otto Reuss
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Losses of soil nitrogen that cannot be attributed to leaching or crop removal have been observed in many field experiments. Several mechanisms have been proposed to account for these losses.
A Field Study Of Miscible Displacement In Saturated Soils, Lloyd Dowley Mcfadden Sadler
A Field Study Of Miscible Displacement In Saturated Soils, Lloyd Dowley Mcfadden Sadler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Extensive research has been carried out in both field and laboratory to explain water and solute movement under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. The importance of such work is obvious, since any attempt at exploring land reclamation by leaching or nutrient movement in plant feeding (to name only two) is subject to interpretations and theories of moisture flow.
Water flow through soil during reclamation by leaching can be termed miscible displacement since soil water and leaching water do not have a distinct fluid-fluid interface and will physically mix. It is probable that miscible displacement investigations can contribute to an understanding …

The Respiratory Chain Involved In Oxidative Phosphorylation On Higher Plants In Relation To Carbon Dioxide-Bicarbonate Inhibition, Wan-Jean Young
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Increased concentrations of CO2 with the accompanying high bicarbonate level in the culture medium have been reported to have a depressing effect in certain plant species on growth (34), respiration (23, 33), oxidative phosphorylation (9), mineral nutrient absorption (17), certain enzymatic reactions (4, 22, 27), accumulation of organic and amino acids (11), and protein synthesis (16). Since accumulation of organic acids occurs in lime-induced chlorotic tissue together with a depression in the respiration of plant tissue, an effect on the energy transfer mechanism of such plants is suspected. Inhibition of electron transfer from the substrate level could result in …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Potassium Accumulation To Metabolism In A Sodium Rich Yeast, Thomas H. Strunk
A Study Of The Relationship Of Potassium Accumulation To Metabolism In A Sodium Rich Yeast, Thomas H. Strunk
Biology
Physiological phenomena such as glandular secretion, intestinal and tubular absorption, nervous activity and bioelectric potentials are all closely related to the movement of sodium (Na) and potassium (K) across cell membranes. The movement of the ionic forms of Na and K across biological membranes has been of special interest to investigators because the movements fail to conform to the predictions of diffusion and thermodynamic law (35). This behavior has been referred to as active transport when the following conditions are met: i) the transport exceeds or is opposite to that to be expected from electrochemical gradients; ii) the transport depends …
Genetic And Physiological Mechanisms Associated With Certain Eye Mutants In Drosophila Melanogaster, Afton M. Hansen
Genetic And Physiological Mechanisms Associated With Certain Eye Mutants In Drosophila Melanogaster, Afton M. Hansen
Biology
A large number of flies expressing an eye abnormality was observed during the sunmer of 1960 in a "wild" Cockaponsett stock. A review of environmental conditions showed that the temperature had risen to 30 C on several days before the abnormal eyes were detected. Some of the abnormalities resembled certain expressions of known mutants such as lobe and tumorous head. Lobe eyes are reduced and flattened anteriorly, whereas the new abnormal eye is not usually reduced, but is flattened ventrally. The tumorous head phenotype is characterized by abnormal growths in the entire head region, but the new abnormality is usually …
