The Possible Competitive Position Of Utah Milk Concentrate On Selected Western Markets, Richard S. Magleby

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the last two decades, Utah's market milk industry has changed from one of local processing and distribution by small-scale plants to one of state-wide distribution by large-scale dairies. At present, four large producer cooperatives control most of the state's market milk and six large processing plants accounts for more than 80 percent of the state's fluid milk sales.

Along with centralized processing and distribution has also come some centralization of production. Statistics recently published by Utah State University show that in 1957, 56 percent of the market milk produced in the state came from the five counties of Cache, …

For many years the descendants of John and James Mellor -- a large family who have made contributions to the cultural and educational activities of their various communities -- have been desirous of preserving for their posterity, and others, a record of the Mellors. Several years ago Amy Mellor Howe initiated the project by compiling and editing the first Mellor History. The foreword in her book wherein she "...hoped that the information and data herein contained may form the nucleus for further research..." served as the incentive to continue the project.

It is planned to incorporate the following biography into …

Unable to more than eke out a bare existence in a barren land where almost 30 acres of range are needed to sustain one sheep, unprepared after generations of isolation and neglect to leave this reservation for areas where a decend standard of living can be had, the Navajos, since 1950, have been the object of a …

Analysis Of Selected Problems Of Home Management House Students, Alta Geniel Mcconkie

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Traditionally, home economics majors and foods and nutrition majors in most colleges and universities have been able to bring their professional theoretical background to a climax with a practical living experience. This has been the policy at Utah State University, fulfilled in Household Administration, Course No. 150. Although the students entering this course are products of different backgrounds and cultural habits, it is assumed that their common home economics background in the University would allow them to manage a home efficiently. For many, however, this living experience requires a substantial adjustment. In some cases this experience of residence in the …

Self Evaluation Of A Selected Group Of Teen Marriages, Margaret L. Stone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The statistical trend toward an increasing number of early marriages in the United States is causing concern for parents and community officials (21). The average age of marriage has been declining since 1890. Half of the girls are now married by the time they are twenty and half of the men by the time they are twenty-three (13). In a study made by Landis (20) of marriages in California high schools, 90 percent of the senior high schools reported one or more student marriages. Similar statistics have been reported in New Mexico (16) and Oregon (18). Research has pointed an …

Reach (1955) states that in our society all children are not only privilaged, but most of them are required to spend many years in school, and the curriculum …

The Effect Of Feeding Various Levels Of Fluoride To Dairy Cattle On Their Pepsin Activity, Hassan Sabeti-Rahmati May 1960

The Effect Of Feeding Various Levels Of Fluoride To Dairy Cattle On Their Pepsin Activity, Hassan Sabeti-Rahmati

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In certain industrial areas fluorides are present in various amounts in the atmosphere. These fluorides are liberated by industrial processes at high temperature in treatment of materials containing fluoride, either as a natural impurity, or as added material for technical purposes. Equipment and procedures have been installed in many plants to reduce the output of fluorides significantly, yet forage and hay grown near the plants may contain elevated amounts of fluorides. The feeding of such material to young livestock for many months may cause fluorosis or chronic fluoride poisoning. Some springs contain a high concentration of fluorides and the continuous …

Levulose (D-fructose, fruit sugar), C6H12O6 is a white crystalline ketohexose. This sugar has distinctive properties which make it of commercial interest. It is more costly than ordinary table sugar (sucrose). Levulose is characterized by a high degree of sweetness (6), great solubility (20), and medical usefulness when administered intravenously. Joslin (21) and Root and Baker (32) found levulose to be of great value in the treatment of diabetes. According to Daniel (8), it is assimilated and oxidized more quickly than sucrose, supplying the necessary energy requirements for the human system. Additional uses of levulose have …

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Asparagus And Tomatoes, Arthur L. Rivers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since growers are generally unable to produce food the year-round, preservation of available food by the growers and processors has continued to challenge the minds of these men and their scientific cohorts. Even the consumer is subject to this problem and mist rely on those from. whoa he receives food as to its present and eventual condition. Many methods of preservation have been used such as pickling, drying, smoking, canning, and freezing. Effects Of Gamma-Radiation On The Quality And Shelf-Life Of Certain Fruits, Diane Weber Box May 1959

Effects Of Gamma-Radiation On The Quality And Shelf-Life Of Certain Fruits, Diane Weber Box

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The story of the development of food preservation is as old as the story of man. Cavemen and nomadic tribesmen have little heed to food preservation. They threw away the food left when their hunger was satisfied and searched for more when famished . However, from the time men began to settle down and have permanent homes, the need for some means of retarding food spoilage has been evident.

In the past few years the Utah Fish and Game Department, as well as the fish and game departments of other states, has been spending fisheries money for fish eradication on both lakes and streams. The Utah Fish and Game Department recently suggested to the University that research be initiated on the subject of toxaphene as a fish poison. Consequently, a better insight into conditions that exist for a given water type could be developed.

The Effect Of Nutritional Education On The Food Habits Of High School Students, Gladys C. Hyer May 1959

The Effect Of Nutritional Education On The Food Habits Of High School Students, Gladys C. Hyer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

"From the day that Adam and Eve shared an apple in the Garden of Eden, food and the partaking of food have been of infinite significance in the life of man."

There is a growing concern among nutritionists and others about the food habits of teenagers, Although the United States is considered to be the best fed nation in the world, there is an important group of our population, abut 16,000,000 teenagers, who have alarmingly poor food habits.
