Study Of America's Adopt-A-Horse (Or Burro) Program, Peter A. Lawson
Study Of America's Adopt-A-Horse (Or Burro) Program, Peter A. Lawson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study analyzes aspects of Wild and Free-Roaming Horse and Burro adoptions. After primary data are gathered by a questionnaire sent to wild horse and burro adopters, various statistics, and regression test results are reported, which indicate that the demand for the wild horses is multifaceted and that the wild animals are not a homogeneous product. The results overwhelmingly indicate that young and female horses are preferred by the majority of adopters. This finding had supportive evidence in both a price determination model as well as adopters' responses to the survey that was conducted as a part of this study. …

Poverty And Migration: Synthesis Of Macrolevel And Microlevel Perspectives Of Migration, Keywon Cheong
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study assesses effects of contextual and personal characteristics on the migration propensities of individuals, with primary focus on several measurements of individual poverty status and the poverty level of the residential areas. The restricted opportunity perspective on poverty, the human capital perspective and the microeconomic perspective on migration, are the major frameworks guiding the study. Logistic regression analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of the Youth Cohort and from the 1983 County and City Data Book is employed to investigate differences in the Migration behavior between the poor and nonpoor, and significant main and interactive effects of …

Analysis Of The Effects Of Inhaled Diesel Exhaust On The Alveolar Intravascular And Interstitial Cellular Components Of Rodent Lungs, M. A. Wallace, S. O. Salley, M. I. Barnhart
Scanning Microscopy
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to determine the effect of diesel engine exhaust (DEE) on the intravascular and interstitial cellular population of the lungs of exposed rats and guinea pigs. Animals with matched controls were subjected to environments of either 250, 750, 1500 or 6000 μg/m3 for either 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 10 weeks or 18 months. These animals were sacrificed immediately following the exposure periods and their lungs perfused with fixative. Following dissection, random stratified biopsies from the lungs of these animals were made. Ultrathin sections from the alveolar lung were prepared and conventionally processed for TEM …
Tooth Eruption: The Regulation Of A Localized, Bilaterally Symmetrical Metabolic Event In Alveolar Bone, S. C. Marks Jr.
Tooth Eruption: The Regulation Of A Localized, Bilaterally Symmetrical Metabolic Event In Alveolar Bone, S. C. Marks Jr.
Scanning Microscopy
Tooth eruption is a complicated process by which developing teeth are moved within the jaws to their functional position. The usual model chosen to study this process, the erupted rodent incisor, differs both structurally and functionally from the human dentition and conclusions drawn from these studies are not directly applicable to tooth eruption in human beings. We have studied the eruption of developing permanent premolars in dogs and present evidence by scanning electron microscopy for regional differences in metabolic activities on bone surfaces of the crypt during eruption. We review evidence that these polarizations of alveolar bone metabolism are cell-mediated, …

Utilization Of Immunogold Labeling To Compare The Adsorption Behavior Of Fibrinogen, Fibronectin And Albumin On Polymers, K. D. Murthy, A. R. Diwan, S. R. Simmons, R. M. Albrecht, S. L. Cooper
Utilization Of Immunogold Labeling To Compare The Adsorption Behavior Of Fibrinogen, Fibronectin And Albumin On Polymers, K. D. Murthy, A. R. Diwan, S. R. Simmons, R. M. Albrecht, S. L. Cooper
Scanning Microscopy
Immunogold labeling followed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the surface distribution of adsorbed plasma proteins. Adsorption was performed under various conditions on six different polymers; [low density polyethylene (PE), chromic acid-oxidized PE (OXPE), solution grade Biomer® (SB), Teflon-(FEP)®, a laboratory synthesized polyurethane containing some zwitterions (ZW) and a polydimethylsiloxane based polyurethane (ZS) also containing zwitterions]. The proteins used were purified human and canine fibrinogen, fibronectin, and serum albumin. The immunogold staining technique was successful in the labeling of the adsorbed proteins. The adsorbed proteins were distributed differently on the polymers selected. Human and canine fibrinogen were …
Trifluoperazine Inhibition Of Fibrinogen Receptor Redistribution In Surface Activated Platelets: Correlative Video-Enhanced Differential Interference Contrast Light Microscopic, High Voltage Electron Microscopic And Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies, O. Trifluoperazine Inhibition Of Fibrinogen Receptor Redistribution In Surface Activated Platelets: Correlative Video-Enhanced Differential Interference Contrast Light Microscopic, High Voltage Electron Microscopic And Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies, O. E. Olorundare, S. L. Goodman, R. M. Albrecht
Scanning Microscopy
Video-enhanced differential interference contrast (VDIC) light microscopy in conjunction with fibrinogen labelled colloidal gold was employed as a probe to follow the mobility of the fibrinogen receptor on platelets. Correlative studies by both high voltage and scanning electron microscopy confirms localization of labels relative to platelet ultrastructural and surface characteristics, respectively. Treatment of platelets with trifluoperazine prior to and after incubation with fibrinogen-gold labels results in a concentration dependent inhibition of receptor movement. The results obtained from this study suggest that phosphorylation of myosin by the Ca++ -calmodulin dependent enzyme, myosin-light chain kinase, is important in the fibrinogen redistribution …

Scanning Microscopy
This study characterizes two-and three-dimensional ultrastructure and surface topography of polymerized networks of intermediate filaments (IF) isolated from mouse peritoneal macrophages. Isolated IF bound to monoclonal anti-IF antibodies in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Immunogold labeling of IF with specific antibodies revealed that epitopes are distributed along filaments particularly at junctions where filaments interconnect. Networks of IF, viewed by scanning electron microscopy, organized as ropelike groups of interconnecting filaments which swirl and encircle each other to form three-dimensional lattices containing ellipsoidal-, circular-, and vacuole-shaped cavities. Cavity diameters were similar in size to organelles and vacuoles; diameters were grouped as small (12-288 nm), …

A Comparative Study On In Vitro Invasion Rates By Melanoma Cells In The Human Amniotic Basement Membrane Model Versus In Vivo Tumor Nodule Formation In C57bl6 Mice, B. Persky, G. W. Chmielewski
Scanning Microscopy
Invasion by murine B16-F10 melanoma cells was studied using the human amniotic basement membrane (HABM) assay. B16-F10 cells were collected after a single passage through the amnion and grown to near confluency. The cycle of plating, passaging, collecting, and culturing B16-F10 cells was repeated five times. The invasion rate for B16-F10 cells remained relatively unchanged after six passages through the amnion. Injection of first-passage B16-F10 cells into C57BL6 mice resulted in 29 lung tumors per animal whereas sixth-passage cells resulted in 300+ lung tumors. While there exists no correlation of the number of cells penetrating the amnion with colonization number, …

Morphometric Changes As A Function Of The Proliferative Status Of Murine Mammary Carcinoma Cells, Linda S. Yasui, Lyle A. Dethlefsen
Scanning Microscopy
Ultrastructural analysis was performed to determine morphological changes in the 67 murine mammary tumor cells grown in four defined metabolic states in vitro, i.e., proliferating cells (P), cells in transition towards quiescence (T), nutrient-deprived quiescent cells (QI), and QI cells stimulated to reenter the cell cycle (St4) by refeeding for 4h in situ with complete medium. Also, these documented changes were evaluated as a function of the radiosensitivity of the various cell types. The average number of lipid body and mitochondrial profiles per cell was significantly higher in QI and St4 cells …

Tumor Vasculature In Young And Old Hosts: Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Microcorrosion Casts With Microangiography, Light Microscopy And Transmission Electron Microscopy, James G. Walmsley, Scott R. Granter, Miles P. Hacker, Ann L. Moore, William B. Ershler
Scanning Microscopy
Tumor growth in vivo is dependent upon new blood vessel formation. When B16-F10 melanoma cells are implanted subcutaneously in young (3 mo) and old (24 mo) C57BL/6 mice the rate of growth is dependent on the age of the mice. This study involved a wide range of histological and microscopic techniques but was limited primarily to the initial phase of tumor growth. Stereological point counting from light microscopy (LM) of standard histological sections has been used to yield data regarding blood content. Tumor-bearing mice were perfused through the aorta with a fixation solution and were infused with a low-viscosity radiopaque …

Assembly And Alignment Of Fibronectin-Coated Gold Beads Into Fibrils By Human Skin Fibroblasts, Donna M. Pesciotta Peters, Deane F. Mosher
Scanning Microscopy
The assembly of fibronectin into fibrils was monitored by high voltage electron microscopy using 18 nm colloidal gold beads bound to fibronectin (Au18-fibronectin) or an amino terminal 70 kd fragment of fibronectin (Au18-70 kd) that blocks the incorporation of fibronectin into disulfide bonded fibrils. Subconfluent cultures of human skin fibroblasts were incubated with the colloidal gold complexes for 0.25, 0.5, 1.5 and 5 h. In fibroblast cultures incubated with Au18-fibronectin and Au18-70 kd fragments for 0.25 and 0.5 h, the complexes of Au18-fibronectin and Au18-70 kd fragment were …
Vascular Casting And Scanning Electron Microscopy In Diabetes, A. W. Fryczkowski
Vascular Casting And Scanning Electron Microscopy In Diabetes, A. W. Fryczkowski
Scanning Microscopy
Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies of the vascular casts of human eyes removed at autopsy from subjects with a long-standing history of Diabetes Type I were performed. Changes in the choroidal vasculature include: Venal focal dilations and narrowings, increased tortuosity, hypercellularity, increased formation of vascular loops and microaneurysms in choriocapillaries and formation of sinus-like structures between choroidal lobules. This study strongly supports earlier light microscopic and transmission electron microscopy observations on changes in the choroid. The retinal vascular changes shown by SEM are microaneurysm formation, drop-out of capillaries and neovascularization. Changes in the choroid, especially in diabetic choriocapillaries can be …

Fluorescence And Light Microscopic Analysis Of Digested Oat Bran, S. H. Yiu, R. Mongeau
Food Structure
The Structural and chemical compositions of digested oat bran were analyzed by fluorescence and other types of light microscopy. The digestion of oat bran was carried out under two conditions - in vitro, by incubation with human saliva, and in vivo, by feeding rats with an oat-bran supplemented diet. Comparison of the digestive breakdown among different structural components of oat bran was conducted by microscopically examining samples obtained from the tents of the large intestine (LIC) of the rats. Results of the examinations revealed that the (1-3) (1-4) - B - D - glucan - rich cell wall of the …
Effect Of Clotting In Stomachs Of Infants On Protein Digestibility Of Milk, S. Nakai, E. Li-Chan
Effect Of Clotting In Stomachs Of Infants On Protein Digestibility Of Milk, S. Nakai, E. Li-Chan
Food Structure
Differences in clotting between human and cow's milk in the stomachs of infants are discussed. Gastric pH, after ingesting milk, of an infant up to 6 months of age stays at a pH range of 4-5, near the isoelectric point of casein, and never reaches the value of 2, which is found in adults. Pepsin C (or gastricsin) can hydrolyze proteins at this pH range. Gastric emptying time is shorter with human milk than with cow's milk which appears to be correlated to the smaller size of human milk clots. Elimination of a readily coagulable fraction of casein from cow's …

The use of organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides has increased markedly during the past two decades. Currently, more than 100 different organophosphorus and carbamate chemicals are registered as the active ingredients in thousands of different pesticide products in the United States. More than 160 million acre-treatments of these pesticides are estimated to be applied to agricultural crops and forests each year. Clearly, these two groups of chemicals constitute a major portion of all pesticides used today. Organophosphorus and carbamate compounds have histories dating back long before their use as pesticides. Carbamates were developed during investigation of "ordeal" poisons used in Africa …
Structure, Energetics, And Vibrational Spectrum Of H2o–Hcl, Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner
Structure, Energetics, And Vibrational Spectrum Of H2o–Hcl, Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
H2O–HCl is studied using a number of basis sets including 6‐31G∗∗ and variants which are augmented by a diffuse sp shell and a second set of d functions on O and Cl. Optimization of the geometry of the complex is carried out including explicitly electron correlation and counterpoise correction of the basis set superposition error (BSSE) at both the SCF and correlated levels. Correlation strengthens and shortens the H bond while BSSE correction leads to an opposite trend; these two effects are of different magnitude and hence cancel one another only partially. ΔH°(298 K) is …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Frequencies and intensities are calculated by ab initio methods for all vibrational modes of the 1:1 H3X–HF and 1:2 H3X–HF–HF complexes (X=N,P). The HF stretching frequencies are subject to red shifts, roughly proportional to the strength of the H bond, and to manyfold increases in intensity. Although the intramolecular frequency shifts within the proton acceptors are relatively modest, the intensities of the NH3 stretches are magnified by several orders of magnitude as a result of H bonding (in contrast to PH3 which exhibits little sensitivity in this regard). …

Primary And Secondary Basis Set Superposition Error At The Scf And Mp2 Levels. H3n‐‐Li+ And H2o‐‐Li+, Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The primary basis set superposition error (BSSE) results from the artificial lowering of the energy of each subunit of a pair by the presence of ‘‘ghost orbitals’’ of its partner. In addition, these ghost orbitals perturb the one‐electron properties of the molecule, causing a change in the interaction energy, an effect known as secondary BSSE which is not corrected by the counterpoise procedure. The primary and secondary BSSE are calculated for the interactions of NH3 and H2O with Li+, using a variety of different basis sets. It is found that the 2° BSSE can be …

A Mathematical Model For The Fate Of Hazardous Substances In Soil: Model Description And Experimental Results, W. Greeney, C. Caupp, Ronald C. Sims
Biological Engineering Faculty Publications
A mathematical model (VIP) was developed and implemented for evaluating the fate of a hazardous substance in the unsaturated zone of the soil. The model simulates vadose zone processes including volatilization, degradation, adsorption/desorption, advection, and dispersion. Four physical phases in the vadose zone are considered including water, oil, soil grains, and soil-pore air (unsaturated pore space). The Vadose Zone Interactive Processes (VIP) model is appropriate for sites under RCRA and CERCLA (Superfund) categorization since site-specific soil-waste processes affecting transport of hazardous chemicals through the vadose zone are incorporated in the model. A RCRA land treatment system was chosen as the …
