A Molecular Analysis Of The Colonization Mechanisms Of The Beneficial Rhizobacterium, Pseudomonas Putida, Carol Robin Buell
A Molecular Analysis Of The Colonization Mechanisms Of The Beneficial Rhizobacterium, Pseudomonas Putida, Carol Robin Buell
Biology
Agglutinability in the beneficial fluorescent pseudomonad, Pseudomonas putida isolate Corvallis, with a plant root surface agglutinin is correlated with establishment of a bacterial population at the root-microbe interface. Agglutinability in P. putida Corvallis is conditioned in vitro by nutrient status and growth phase. Genetic analyses of the agglutination phenotype in P. putida indicate a locus, aggA, on a 2.7 kbp EcoRI-Hind III fragment is involved in manifestation of the agglutination phenotype and in adherence by the cells to bean root surfaces. Sequence analyses predict the presence of two potential open reading frames, ORFAGG1 and ORFAGG2, within the 2.7 kbp …

The relative reduction in potential groundwater contamination due to pesticides at several sites in Utah was determined by comparing alternative irrigation system designs, water management practices, and pesticides. Alternative sprinkler irrigation distribution coefficients were used to estimate irrigation application depths. The movement of pesticides through soils following sprinkler irrigations was simulated with a one-dimensional model. Pesticide contamination of groundwater can be reduced by careful selection of pesticides, using properly designed irrigation systems, and improved water management techniques. Procedures for selecting an appropriate sprinkler system design and pesticide are presented. KEYWORDS. Pesticides, Leaching, Sprinkler irrigation, Irrigation depth, Irrigation system design, Soil, …
Characteristics Related To The Incidence Of Osteoporosis In Two Distinct Female Populations, Deborah A. Pyke
Characteristics Related To The Incidence Of Osteoporosis In Two Distinct Female Populations, Deborah A. Pyke
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Osteoporosis is responsible for approximately 1.3 to 1.5 million fractures per year in the United States. The risk of osteoporosis increases with age, especially among postmenopausal women, and with lifestyle factors such as the use of certain drugs, heavy alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, high caffeine intake, and sedentary living. Genetic factors that may influence susceptibility to osteoporosis include a positive family history of the disease, or a low weight - for-height ratio. In some cases, race and geographic location may increase or decrease the risk of osteoporosis. Known protective factors include obesity, estrogen replacement therapy, weight bearing exercise, and possibly …

Preschoolers' Perceptions Of Their Alternative Care Environments, Michael K. Godfrey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to examine children's perceptions of their alternative child care environment without constraining thought processes or suggesting appropriate answers. The Child Care Game Assessment (CCGA) was developed to meet these goals. The CCGA is a role-plating, game-like assessment for preschool children. It uses a model of the child's alternative care environment and allows children to act out portions of a typical day.
The CCGA was administered to 57 four- and five-year-old children attending non-parental child care. Twenty-one children (11 boys and 10 girls) attended Utah State University's Child Development Laboratory, a 10-hour-per-week preschool. Twenty-one children …

Crisis Intervention: An Evaluation Of Services Provided To Families Of Sexually Abused Children In Davis County, Utah, Karen Louise Letts
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study assessed the extent to which victim families are or are not helped by the support services in Davis County, Utah. A sample of 29 mothers of sexually abused children indicated that existing intervention services were greatly underutilized and hard to locate. Seventeen of these mothers reported that they were either ignored by their caseworkers or, conversely, told not to get counseling until their case was adjudicated because of the investigator's belief that any exposure to therapy might erode the child's credibility as a witness. Only 48% of the families were informed of their Victim Rights as required by …
Similarities Within Adolescent Friendship Pairs: The Relationship Between The Strength And Qualities Of Friendship And The Individuals' Ego Identity Development, James F. Akers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Current theory and research have suggested that adolescent friends share many similarities which range from strong similarities in sociodemographic variables to weaker correlations for personality characteristics. The goal of this study was to advance the base of knowledge related to similarities between friends by exploring relationships between early adolescent ego identity status and friendship strength, quality, and duration. First, the objective measure of Ego Identity Status was used to test the hypothesis that early adolescents in reciprocally identified friendship pairs are more similar in their ego identity status; no such relationship was found. Second, a measure designed to assess friendship …

The Proposed Use Of An Anatomically Marked Presurgically Fitted Prostheses With Infants Who Have Unrepaired Cleft Palates, Amy Moser
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Approximately one out of every 750 children are born with some type of an oral cleft (McWilliams, Morris, & Shelton, 1984) Children with clefts of the palate in general have a higher incidence of articulation disorders than do children without clefts. Typical speech problems which tend to occur are hypernasality and multiple articulation errors, often consisting of atypical tongue placement in the mouth or nontypical articulation at sites in the larynx or pharynx. These speech problems can be severe and may require years of expensive, long-term professional treatment to remediate.

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Because of the ever increasing number of non- (NEP) and Limited- (LEP) English Proficient persons in the United States, the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) working in the public school setting is currently faced with the challenge of developing effective strategies for the assessment and identification of bilingual children with communicative disorders. One of the responsibilities of the SLP is to administer tests to children with suspected communicative disorders. However, it is difficult for a monolingual, English speaking SLP to effectively assess the speech and language of a non- or limited-English speaking child because of the language barrier that is present. In …

The Education of the Handicapped Act Amendment of 1968 (Public Law 99-457) has been cited as one of the major factors in national policy for educating young children with disabilities nationwide. It offers eligible families and children the right that, through program implementation, dissemination, research, model demonstrations, teacher training, and technical assistance, all will obtain free and appropriate special education services (Mack, 1988). Public influence on the educational system has come from parents with handicapped children and advocacy groups who have an invested interest in this population. However, only in the past three decades has the federal government exerted any …

Social and employment changes have occurred in the United States over the past twenty years that have had a drastic impact on the "traditional" American family. Americans now live in an era of inflation and economic change in which a second family income is often a necessity just to maintain.an adequate standard of living. Mothers' are no longer waiting until their youngest child enters elementary school to enter or re-enter the labor force. By 1985, 57% of mothers' of children under the age of six were in the labor force, whereas in 1950, only 12% were employed (Department of Labor, …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As the earliest surviving record of an urban Tidewater Baptist church, the Alexandria minute book offers historians insight on the leadership and concerns of urban Baptists around 1800. This congregation, largely white women, middle class white men, and black people, slave and free, offered its members a greater equality than they could find elsewhere. This thesis explored these strains of equality and found that the members, especially the women, exercised power within the Church greater than they could command without. The second half of this project provided an accurate transcript of this record book. Any information available on members who …

Immunological Effects Of Amphotericin B Desoxycholate And Liposomal Amphotericin B On Splenocytes From Immune-Normal And Immune-Compromised Mice, Jay Jenson Schindler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Because of the increasing number of serious risk factors which predispose a normally immune competent host to infection, the incidence of systemic fungal infections is steadily increasing. This epidemiological rise has especially become apparent since the onset of the AIDS epidemic. Amphotericin B is the drug of choice for these life-threatening mycotic infections. Complications due to drug toxicity, however, severely limit amphotericin B's clinical usefulness. The major complication associated with the administration of amphotericin B is renal toxicity. Research has indicated, however, that besides its antifungal activities, amphotericin B may act as an immune stimulant of both humoral and cellular …

Development And Validation Of A Systematic Training Program For The Diagnosis Of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, And Concomitant Conditions, Lind K. Todd
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The research concerning eating disorders and concomitant conditions shows that anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are serious disorders that pose many diagnostic and therapeutic challenges to mental health and nutrition professionals. Most psychologists and nutritionists receive broad-based training that likely only superficially touches upon the importance of these diagnostic issues. Nevertheless, effective treatment planning requires that diagnostic issues and concomitant conditions be evaluated and incorporated into the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders. Thus, there is an increasing need for specialized training in order to better evaluate and treat the complicated clinical picture presented by eating disorder clients.
However to …

Presentation Of A Standard Intervention During The Intake Interview, Gregory Burns
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The provision of psychotherapeutic services has undergone many changes in its history. Recently the field of therapy has seen an increased emphasis on providing services in briefer periods of time, which has resulted in greater investigation into the parameters that influence rapid therapeutic growth by clients. Despite this push for quick results, many service agencies continue to utilize initial intake interviews that focus exclusively on gathering diagnostic and demographic information. Therapeutic intervention is therefore reserved for some later time when the clients can be accommodated from the agency's waiting list. The present study investigated the influence of a standard intervention …
