Competence And Acceptance Of Children With Developmental Disabilities: An Examination Of Self-Concept, Cindy S. Smith May 1994

Competence And Acceptance Of Children With Developmental Disabilities: An Examination Of Self-Concept, Cindy S. Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship of the self-concepts of a sample of 248 children with developmental disabilities with demographic variables and measures of child functioning and family situational variables. In addition, responses on a measure of self-concept were compared with those of a normative sample provided by Harter. Results indicated that, using this measure and these populations, there were no differences in the self-concept of children with disabilities and those without disabilities. Canonical correlation analysis indicated that children's cognitive achievement and independent functioning skills were moderately related to their self-concepts, but demographic variables and family …

Relation Between Child Abuse Risk And Security Of Mother-Infant Attachment At One Year, Miriam Egan May 1994

Relation Between Child Abuse Risk And Security Of Mother-Infant Attachment At One Year, Miriam Egan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although previous studies have shown that children who have been abused are more likely to be classified as insecurely attached to their mothers, research has not examined risk for child abuse when measured as a continuous variable in relation to security of attachment when measured as a continuous variable. This study examined the relation between risk of child abuse (as measured by the Child Abuse Potential Inventory and the Harsh Parenting Scale) and security of mother-infant attachment (as measured by the Q-sort of Infant Attachment) at 14 and 17 months. Results supported the view that there is a negative relation …

Spouse abuse is a significant social problem that has recently received considerable attention by family researchers. National studies have estimated the incidence of spouse abuse in the United States, but few studies have been conducted at the state or local level.

Data were obtained from the Utah Division of Family Services Domestic Violence Client Record (Form 741-S) reporting system. A total of 1,363 primary victims of spouse abuse was identified for the calendar year 1992.

It is posited that victims of low socioeconomic status and victims of severe physical abuse are more likely to return to their own home after …

Identification And Conceptualization Of Sexual Abuse Resiliency Factors: A Review Of The Literature, Heidi J. Moss May 1994

Identification And Conceptualization Of Sexual Abuse Resiliency Factors: A Review Of The Literature, Heidi J. Moss

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Resiliency, while historically grounded and defined, lacks important conceptual clarity when considering the area of sexual abuse resiliency. Considerable theoretical effort has been dedicated to this phenomena in certain specific areas of human development (e.g., children) with empirical endeavors to validate it's relevance. To date there seems to be consensus with the notion that three specific variables are correlated with resiliency outcomes, namely, biological, psychological and social influences. It is posited that these three primary variables and their substantive variables independently, as well as interactively, buffer the effects of abuse one may experience during the course of a life time. …

The Acoustic Transparency Of Ad*Hear Wax Guards When Measuring Dpoaes, Tiffany Lloyd Shelton May 1994

The Acoustic Transparency Of Ad*Hear Wax Guards When Measuring Dpoaes, Tiffany Lloyd Shelton

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Approximately one to six of every 1,000 children is born deaf or with some degree of permanent hearing loss (Parving, 1993; Watkins, Baldwin, & McEnery, 1991; White, & Behrens, 1993). Reduced hearing acuity during infancy and early childhood may interfere with the development of the child's speech and verbal language skills (NIH, 1993). Reduced auditory input can also have harmful effects on the child's social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development (NIH, 1993). Because hearing is crucial for the development of speech and verbal language skills, the developmental future of a child born with a significant hearing loss depends greatly on …

New Directions In Medical School Admissions, Stephen D. Neeleman May 1994

New Directions In Medical School Admissions, Stephen D. Neeleman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In 1910, American medicine underwent a thorough review of its practices, policies, and most importantly, its education. The review was conducted by Abraham Flexner, under commission of the Carnegie Foundation. Flexner's task was to determine the uniformity of medical learning throughout the United States, and to develop a systematic approach whereby the nation could improve its overall health training. The subsequent Flexner report changed the face of medical education for decades. Its tenets provoked revolutionary changes in the medical school process that are still in use today. However, some have begun to question facets of the report, and even introduce …

The African-American Community Of Ogden, Utah: 1910-1950, Eric Stene

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The African-American community of Ogden, Utah started much of its growth in the early twentieth century. Prior to the early nineteen hundreds less than one hundred African Americans lived in Ogden. The availability of jobs with the railroads brought many African Americans to Ogden in search of steady employment. Through the decades Ogden's African Americans branched out from railroad and service work into business ownership. As the African-American community grew, its members established new churches in the city.

Racism and indifference had their impact on the African Americans. They found themselves segregated into specific neighborhoods and African-American males were unable …

Transcervical Versus Laparoscopic Insemination In Nulliparous And Multiparous Ewes After Estradiol Cypionate Treatment, Tami L. Gage

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The only practical method for artificially breeding ewes with frozen semen is laparoscopic insemination into the lumen of the uterine horn. Like all surgical procedures, however, laparoscopic artificial inseminatiom has limitations. The procedure requires surgical skill and costly equipment. Repeated passage of the laparoscope through the abdominal wall causes adhesions. Depositing frozen/thawed semen at the os cervix results in low conception rates. The inability to pass an insemination pipette through the cervix has prevented artificial insemination in sheep from becoming a standard breeding method as in the cattle industry. This study compared laparoscopic and transcervical methods of insemination in nulliparous …

Molecular Toxicology Of Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Hea-Young Kim May 1994

Molecular Toxicology Of Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Hea-Young Kim

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are cytotoxic, carcinogenic, and anti-carcinogenic in vivo and in vitro, and they produce many hazardous effects in humans and animals. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) also cross-link with DNA and/or protein. However, whether such cross-linking is important to the toxic action of PAs is not known. In addition, the exact mechanism underlying these DNA cross-links or cytotoxicity is also not clear.

In three separate studies, I characterized the nature of PA-induced DNA cross-links and the relationships between PA structures and cross-linking potency. In the first study (Chapter II), I found that cross-linking potency of PA congeners coincided with their …

Alcohol, Abstinence, Efficacy, And Social Normative Expectancies: The Relationship To Alcoholics' Level Of Drinking Following Inpatient Treatment, Martin John Toohill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has been argued that individuals receiving traditional alcohol treatment do not necessarily perceive life-long abstinence from alcohol as a favorable treatment outcome, and that negative expectations associated with this abstinence goal may have an adverse effect on treatment outcome. However, "abstinence expectancies" have never been systematically explored. This study used the Theory of Planned Behavior to investigate the relationship between the abstinence outcome expectancies of alcoholics beginning treatment and subsequent alcohol consumption. The independent and combined effects of abstinence outcome expectancies, alcohol outcome expectancies, self-efficacy expectancies (to abstain from alcohol use), and the normative beliefs of individuals beginning inpatient …
