Effect Of Iron Binding On The Ability Of Crocidolite To Cause Dna Single-Strand Breaks, Jeanne Ann Hardy
Effect Of Iron Binding On The Ability Of Crocidolite To Cause Dna Single-Strand Breaks, Jeanne Ann Hardy
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fibrous carcinogens, such as crocidolite asbestos, are known to catalyze many of the same reactions as iron, namely O2 consumption, generation of reduced oxygen species, and damage to DNA, such as strand breaks, and modifications of bases. Upon inhalation, fibers are also known to become coated with an iron-rich material. The mechanism by which this iron is bound to fibers in the lung is not known, and the effect of this additional iron on the reactivity of the fibers is also not well understood. The studies described here were undertaken to elucidate the abilities of crocidolite asbestos, in its …

Quantitative Dark-Field Mass Analysis Of Ultrathin Cryosections In The Field-Emission Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope, S. Brian Andrews, Roger A. Buchanan, Richard D. Leapman
Scanning Microscopy
The availability of a cryotransfer stage, highly efficient electron energy loss spectrometers, and ultrathin-window energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometers for the VG Microscopes HB501 field-emission scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) provides this instrument with the potential for high resolution biological microanalysis. Recent technical advances offer cryosections that are thin enough to take advantage of the analytical capabilities of this microscope. This paper first discusses the quantitative characterization of freeze-dried, ultrathin cryosections of directly frozen liver and brain by low-dose dark-field STEM imaging. Such images reveal high-quality sections with good structural detail, mainly due to reduced preparation artifacts and electron beam damage. These …
The Preparation Of Cultured Cells For X-Ray Microanalysis, Alice Warley
The Preparation Of Cultured Cells For X-Ray Microanalysis, Alice Warley
Scanning Microscopy
X-ray microanalysis of cells in culture is being used increasingly for the study of relationships between element (ion) content and cell function. There is, however, no one single method which can be used for the preparation of all different cell types for study by microanalysis. Cells in suspension are usually concentrated by centrifugation, before cryofixation, cryosectioning, and freeze drying. On the other hand cells grown as monolayers are more often studied as whole cell mounts, which are washed to remove the external medium before cryofixation and freeze drying. The alternative approach, sectioning of cell monolayers is rarely used. Some of …
The Father Of ‘Talk Show Democracy’—On The Line With Larry King, Ted Pease
The Father Of ‘Talk Show Democracy’—On The Line With Larry King, Ted Pease
Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications
IN THE AFTERMATH of what surely was the most extraordinary presidential campaign ever for the American news media, the Larry King story-like the man himself-has taken on almost mythic proportions: Horatio Alger Makes Good. Real good. Today, the mantle of media greatness rests easy on the selfdescribed "Jewish kid from Brooklyn" in the wake of events that defined the "top banana of talk show hosts" as the undisputed kingmaker of the 1990S. Consider: During the presidential race, Ross Perot announced his candidacy (twice) on "Larry King Live"; after belittling the idea, an uncomfortable (and, finally, desperate) George Bush came on …

Development Concept Plan, Zions Canyon Headquarters, Zion National Park, Utah, United States Department Of The Interior, National Park Service
Parks and Reserves
The plan will implement a mandatory shuttle bus system in Zion Canyon during the peak visitor use season. A transit/information center, located in a portion of the Watchman Campground, will function as the shuttle bus staging area. It will include a 575 vehicle parking and bus loading area, information center, visitor comfort facilities, amphitheater, and a picnic area. The Watchman Campground (partially displaced by the shuttle facilities) and South Campground will be rehabilitated to improve circulation and the quality of the campsites. The existing visitor center would be converted to an education center.

The Presidency In The New Media Age, Everette E. Dates, Ted Pease
Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications
Nowhere are the differences between journalism and history more evident than in assessments of the presidency of the United States. If journalism is generously described as "history in a hurry," so is it shortsighted and sloppy as it lurches forward, gathering news in bits and pieces, coming to conclusions based on short-term accomplishments and the court of public opinion.

The Microvasculature Of Human Infant Oral Mucosa Using Vascular Corrosion Casts And India Ink Injection Ii. Palate And Lip, Q. X. Yu, K. M. Pang, W. Ran, H. P. Philipsen, X. H. Chen
The Microvasculature Of Human Infant Oral Mucosa Using Vascular Corrosion Casts And India Ink Injection Ii. Palate And Lip, Q. X. Yu, K. M. Pang, W. Ran, H. P. Philipsen, X. H. Chen
Scanning Microscopy
The microvasculature of human hard and soft palate and lip originating from four infant males and six females, aged 6 months to 2 years was studied by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts and light microscopy of India ink injected specimens. The capillary loops of the hard palate mucosa and vermilion border of the lips were found to be tall, numerous and consisted of primary, secondary and tertiary loops. Those of the soft palatal and labial mucosa were short, few in number and demonstrated a simple hair-pin shape originating directly from the subpapillary vascular network. It was concluded that …

Critical Point Mounting Of Kinetoplast Dna For Atomic Force Microscopy, T. Thundat, R. J. Warmack, D. P. Allison, K. B. Jacobson
Scanning Microscopy
Atomic force microscope (AFM) images of intact kinetoplast DNA were obtained from samples prepared utilizing critical point drying. These images are compared with AFM images obtained using conventional methods for DNA deposition. Although the images obtained on chemically pretreated mica show more details than on unmodified mica, images obtained with critical point drying were superior. Kinetoplast networks with expected sizes and structures were routinely observed with critical point drying. The resolution of individual strands of DNA was greatly improved, and image artifacts associated with air dried samples were eliminated. Samples prepared using mildly sonicated kinetoplast DNA show isolated minicircles.

Integrated Embedding Optimization Applied To Salt Lake Valley Aquifers, A. Gharbi, Richard C. Peralta
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The embedding optimization modeling approach is adapted to aid sustainable groundwater quantity and quality management of complex nonlinear multilayer aquifers. Implicit block-centered finite difference approximations of the quasi three-dimensional unsteady flow equation and Galerkin finite element approximations of the two-dimensional advection-dispersion transport equation are embedded directly as constraints in the model. Also used are nonlinear constraints describing river-aquifer interflow, evapotranspiration, and vertical flow reduction due to unconfinement. These circumvent use of large numbers of integer variables. The use of both linear and nonlinear formulations in a cyclical manner reduces execution time and improves confidence in solution optimality. The methodology is …

Biological Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy In The Field-Emission Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope, R. D. Leapman, S. Q. Sun, J. A. Hunt, S. B. Andrews
Scanning Microscopy
The dedicated scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) combined with parallel electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) provides a very sensitive means of detecting specific elements in small structures. EELS is more sensitive than optimized energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy by a factor of about three for calcium. Measurement of such low concentrations requires special processing methods such as difference-acquisition techniques and multiple least squares procedures for fitting reference spectra. By analyzing data recorded at each pixel in a spectrum-image it is possible to map quantitatively the elemental distributions in a specimen. It is possible to prepare cryosections that are sufficiently thin to avoid …
Radiation-Induced Fibrosis: The Structure/Function Relationship, J. C. Murray
Radiation-Induced Fibrosis: The Structure/Function Relationship, J. C. Murray
Scanning Microscopy
Fibrosis is a frequent complication of therapeutic radiation delivered to organ sites such as the thorax and pelvic region. We investigated the relationship between function, and biochemical and structural changes in the lung and colon of CBA mice irradiated with 240 kV X-rays. Progressive changes in lung function, as evidenced by increased breathing rates were observed out to 6 months post-irradiation. Biochemical studies demonstrated increased metabolism (synthesis and breakdown) of collagen around 6 months after irradiation, but provided no evidence of net collagen accumulation. Analysis of collagen isotypes revealed a slight increase in the ratio of types I and Ill. …

The potential energy surface of the ground state He+Cl2(1Σg) is calculated by using the perturbation theory of intermolecular forces and supermolecular Møller–Plesset perturbation theory approach. The potential energy surface of the first excited triplet He+Cl2(3Πu) was evaluated using the supermolecular unrestricted Møller–Plesset perturbation theory approach. In the ground state two stable isomers are found which correspond to the linear He–Cl–Cl structure (a primary minimum, De=45.1 cm−1, Re=4.25 Å) and to the T‐shaped structure with He perpendicular to the molecular axis (a secondary …

Environmental Assessment Animal Damage Control On Public Lands Administered By The U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management, Casper District, Wyoming, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management
Environmental Assessments (WY)
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) recognize that native animals are resources of value and interest to the American people. Animal damage control (ADC) management may be required to minimize depredations to livestock and wildlife species; to protect threatened and endangered species; to maintain viable populations of native wildlife species; to preserve ecologically unique areas; to minimize rodent and other wildlife damage to cropland, grassland, and forestland; and, to suppress animal-borne diseases. ADC functions as a supplement to, not a substitute for, standard husbandry practices and techniques.
An Application Of The Linear Expenditure Systems To The Pattern Of Consumer Behavior In Taiwan, Tsangyao Chang, Chris Fawson
An Application Of The Linear Expenditure Systems To The Pattern Of Consumer Behavior In Taiwan, Tsangyao Chang, Chris Fawson
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This study reveals certain systematic tendencies in consumer behavior in Taiwan from 1951 to 1990. The method of systems estimation and precision estimates revealed by significant t statistics and higher R2 make the system of equations a useful tool to characterize broad tendencies in individual allocation of expenditure behavior. This analysis has important implications for government production strategies relating to price and subsidy policies and promotion of reasonable standards of social welfare and health. In general, this study represents our attempt to make a systematic estimation of consumer demand to identify the broad tendencies of individual demand behavior in Taiwan.
