Bark Beetle Activity In Douglas-Fir, Pseudotsuga Menziesii Var. Glauca Mirb. (Franco), Following The 1994 Beaver Mountain Fire, Catherine A. Cunningham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The 1994 Beaver Mountain fire ignited the canopies of subalpine fir, Abies lasiocarpa, and spread ground fire into adjacent Douglas-fir forests, Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca. Despite shorter flight seasons due to lower annual temperatures and persistent snow, the Douglas-fir bark beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, attacked a range of moderately fire-injured host conifers. Logistic regression models illustrated that in 1995 associated bark beetles selected large diameter Douglas-fir with 60-80% bole char, 60-80% crown volume scorch, and 50-70% probability of mortality due to fire. In 1996 beetle preference shifted to smaller diameter trees with lighter fire injury. Tree size was …

Evolutionary Genetics Of Canyon Treefrogs (Hyla Arenicolor), Roy A. Murray
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Population genetics is the study of the mechanisms that cause genetic change in populations over time. Genetic changes may lead to both adaptive evolution and speciation. While the former process is fairly well understood, many questions remain unanswered with regard to the process of speciation. How important is population isolation in the process of speciation? How long must populations be isolated before speciation is complete? Are the genetic changes that take place during speciation caused mainly by natural selection or does genetic drift play a substantial role? Can genetic drift alone lead to reproductive isolation? These types of questions have …

Wendt's accomplishments as an artist of Polynesia and positions he held at different universities are presented in Chapter I. This marks the significant contributions he has made in different genres in which he has written, like novels, short stories, and poetry, that make him a major influence in the Pacific.
Chapter II analyzes the theoretical framework within the fa'a-Samoa in which a matai (chief) is presented, a revered office filled by respectable individuals. To make this point clear, I present the theoretical groundwork in Appendix A of how an individual becomes a matai.
Chapter III explores how Faleasa Osovae, …

Journals Under Attack: Faculty And Researchers' Creative Solutions To Access Problems (Or, Theft Is The Answer. What Was The Question?), Judith R.J. Johnson, Betty Rozum
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Escalating journal subscription costs and concurrent library and institutional budget cuts have precipitated the cancellation of journal subscriptions by many research and academic libraries. How does the faculty and research community obtain the information no longer provided for them by their university libraries? Resource sharing among libraries has been a traditional solution to this dilemma, but is not the only solution employed by researchers and faculty. Part of a study conducted at Utah State University (USU) examines the methods faculty and researchers use to obtain access to materials not held by the University Libraries, focusing on identifying unique or unconventional …

Image Analysis Of Primary Bone-Derived Cells On Different Polystyrene Surfaces, R. M. Shelton, G. Landini
Image Analysis Of Primary Bone-Derived Cells On Different Polystyrene Surfaces, R. M. Shelton, G. Landini
Cells and Materials
The aim of the present study was to examine whether two different cell populations could be discerned using image analysis of a variety of morphological parameters on bacteriological and tissue culture polystyrene surfaces. Rat periosteal and osteoblast cultures were established on both polystyrene petri dishes and examined using phase contrast microscopy after one and two weeks before capturing digital images which were stored on a personal computer. The digital images were processed to identify the cell margins or perimeter, from which seven different morphological parameters were calculated using a program developed (by GL) for both the cell populations on the …

Exercising a right that their peers throughout the United States were denied, Utah women voted in 1870 elections. At the time, the only other American women who could vote were in Wyoming territory, and they had not yet had the chance to go to the polls. The more numerous women of Utah would lose the vote as a result of subsequent conflicts between mormons and the federal government over polygamy. However, they regained woman suffrage in the 1896 Utah state constitution, after a hard fought struggle that involved national figures such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony and …

This project involved three steps. First, we assembled a consolidated data set on prices, trade flow volumes, and transfer costs-the costs of moving product from one location to another-for feed grains (com and soybean meal), slaughter hogs, and fresh or chilled carcasses and primal cuts (bellies, hams, loins, ribs) among the eight main pork economies of the Pacific Rim (Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, Taiwan, the United States), covering the years 1990-96. By making available for the first time comparable international data, we have helped resolve a major stumbling block to careful empirical analysis of factor and product …

Microstructural Effects Regarding Fracture Of Clinically Retrieved Dental Sonic And Hand Scalers, H. J. Mueller, M. S. Bapna
Microstructural Effects Regarding Fracture Of Clinically Retrieved Dental Sonic And Hand Scalers, H. J. Mueller, M. S. Bapna
Cells and Materials
The fracture surfaces of sonic and hand scaler instruments fractured under clinical and laboratory conditions were compared to their etched sections, and analyzed for evidence revealing the process that led to their failure. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy indicated the quality of the martensitic stainless steel comprising the sonic scalers, all from one manufacturer, was inferior to the steel comprising the hand scalers from another manufacturer. The sonic scalers contained stringer inclusions aligned longitudinally and consisting of calcium, aluminum, silicon, and other elements up to 50 µm in length. The sonic scalers displayed brittle fracture while the hand …

Biofilms In Dental Unit Waterlines: Ultrastructural And Cytochemical Analysis, J. Barbeau, C. Avezard, E. Faucher, S. Zalzal, A. P. Prévost
Cells and Materials
Dental unit waterlines are heavily colonized by bacteria which contaminate the water used to perform intra-oral, and sometimes invasive, procedures. There is little information on the nature of the biofilm colonizing the flexible plastic tubing used to supply water to the different handpieces. We have therefore undertaken quantitative microbial analysis and ultrastructural studies of these biofilms by direct counting with the epifluorescent filter technique and by transmission and scanning electron microscopy after staining with ruthenium red and periodic acid-thiosemicarbazide-silver proteinate to visualize the composition and the distribution of exopolysaccharides and intracellular polysaccharides. The biofilm was revealed as a non-uniform structure …

Ultrastructural Observations Of Peri-Implant Mucosa Morphology Around Different Types Of Abutment In Humans, C. Piacentini, P. Lanzarini, R. Rodriguez Y Baena, S. Rizzo, C. Brusotti
Cells and Materials
Scanning electron microscopy (SFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the morphological aspects of peri-implant mucosa around abutments of differing geometry (biconical and cylindrical) and of differing surface micromorphology. The samples were taken from seven patients who had undergone implant surgery at least one year prior to the study. In samples from biconical abutments, SEM of the sulcular epithelium showed that it consisted of flattened polygonal cells with a surface resembling a honeycomb. Superficial desquamation was rarely found. In contrast, in the samples from cylindrical abutments, the sulcular epithelium showed extensive desquamation and surface irregularity, but not …

Unexpected Connections: Considering Employees' Personal Lives Can Revitalize Your Business, Lotte Bailyn, Joyce K. Fletcher, Doborah Kolb
ADVANCE Library Collection
Efforts to integrate work and personal life affect people at all organizational levels. Traditional approaches seem to exacerbate the problem by pitting employee and business goals against each other. The authors' approach to integration is based on linking personal lives and work in an opportunity to innovate and change. In a research project, Bailyn et al. worked with a company known for leading-edge employee benefits to find out why employees were not fully using those benefits. At each site, they collaborated to help employees better integrate work with personal lives and help the site meet its business goals. They helped …

Hill Air Force Base (AFB), UT, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR). The range contains waste-water treatment and disposal facilities that consist of two infiltration ponds operated in parallel, followed by an emergency overflow basin that safeguards against unexpectedly high flow rates. A previous evaluation concluded that the existing facilities should be replaced, at a relatively high cost and with no possibility for beneficial water reuse. The U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USACERL) was requested to further evaluate the system and to identify cost-effective, feasible alternatives. USACERL researchers identified a …
