Unescosat: The United Nations’ First Satellite, Donald Platt Aug 2010

Unescosat: The United Nations’ First Satellite, Donald Platt

Small Satellite Conference

An international effort is underway to produce the first satellite in the history of the United Nations. The idea of the preparation and launch, with the endorsement of the UNESCO branch of the United Nations, of an international satellite to promote science education, public awareness of science, and international co-operation in the basic sciences, was presented by the National Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO to the UNESCO basic sciences committee. The General Conference of UNESCO at its 35th session in October 2009 approved an amendment to the UNESCO draft Programme and Budget for 2010-2011 concerning the project. The …

Conducting Science With A Cubesat: The Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment, Scott Palo, Xinlin Li, David Gerhardt, Drew Turner, Rick Kohnert, Vaughn Hoxie, Susan Batiste

Small Satellite Conference

Energetic particles, electrons and protons either directly associated with solar flares or trapped in the terrestrial radiation belt, have a profound space weather impact. A 3U CubeSat mission with a single instrument, the Relativistic Electron and Proton Telescope integrated little experiment (REPTile), has been selected by the National Science Foundation to address fundamental questions pertaining to the relationship between solar flares and energetic particles. These questions include the acceleration and loss mechanisms of outer radiation belt electrons. The Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment operating in a highly inclined low earth orbit, will measure differential fluxes of relativistic electrons in the …

The Fastrac Experience: A Student Run Nanosatellite Program , Sebastián Muñoz, Jamin Greenbaum, Thomas Campbell, Greg Holt, E.Glenn Lightsey

Small Satellite Conference

The FASTRAC (Formation Autonomy Spacecraft with Thrust, Relnav, Attitude and Crosslink) satellites built by students from The University of Texas at Austin are manifested for a Space Test Program (STP) launch in September 2010. FASTRAC is the 2005 winner of the University Nanosatellite competition sponsored by the Air Force Office of Space Research and Air Force Research Laboratories. FASTRAC is a two nanosatellite mission that will be launched aboard a Minotaur IV rocket from Kodiak, Alaska. The goal of the FASTRAC mission is to demonstrate enabling technologies for nanosatellites that work together in space. The primary mission objectives are: 1) …

Initial Flight Results For An Automated Satellite Beacon Health Monitoring Network, Anthony Young, Christopher Kitts, Michael Neumann, Ignacio Mas, Mike Rasay Aug 2010

Initial Flight Results For An Automated Satellite Beacon Health Monitoring Network, Anthony Young, Christopher Kitts, Michael Neumann, Ignacio Mas, Mike Rasay

Small Satellite Conference

Beacon monitoring is an automated satellite health monitoring architecture that combines telemetry analysis, periodic low data rate message broadcasts by a spacecraft, and automated ground reception and data handling in order to implement a cost-effective anomaly detection and notification capability for spacecraft missions. Over the past two decades, this architecture has been explored and prototyped for a range of spacecraft mission classes to include use on NASA deep space probes, military spacecraft and small satellites. This previous work has also included formalization of performance assessment metrics to capture the cost and performance of the anomaly detection and notification tasks, thereby …

A Plug-And-Play Approach Based On The I2c Standard, James Lyke, Jesse Mee, Fredrik Bruhn, Gael Chosson, Robert Lindegren, Henrik Lofgren, Jan Schulte, Scott Cannon, Jacob Christensen, Bryan Hansen, Robert Vick, Alonzo Vera, Josette Calixte-Rosengren Aug 2010

A Plug-And-Play Approach Based On The I2c Standard, James Lyke, Jesse Mee, Fredrik Bruhn, Gael Chosson, Robert Lindegren, Henrik Lofgren, Jan Schulte, Scott Cannon, Jacob Christensen, Bryan Hansen, Robert Vick, Alonzo Vera, Josette Calixte-Rosengren

Small Satellite Conference

Plug-and-play architectures can reduce the timeline for constructing complex systems by automating the connections between components. While plug-and-play technologies have been successfully applied to aerospace systems, the overhead of the interface circuitry is a concern affecting its widespread use, particularly in smaller satellites. In this paper, we discuss a “minimalist” plug-and-play interface based on the popular inter-integrated circuit (I2C) standard, leading to dramatic simplifications of the interface circuitry necessary to be plug-and-play compliant. This concept, referred to as “mini-plug-and-play” (the space-qualified version is called “SPA-1”), has been created as a direct product of an international cooperative program between the United …

Evolutional Launch Concept For Pico/Nano Satellite, Seiji Matsuda, Nobuhiro Sekino, Kazuhiro Yagi, Yasunobu Segawa, A.C. Charania, Hideki Kanayama, Takayoshi Fuji Aug 2010

Evolutional Launch Concept For Pico/Nano Satellite, Seiji Matsuda, Nobuhiro Sekino, Kazuhiro Yagi, Yasunobu Segawa, A.C. Charania, Hideki Kanayama, Takayoshi Fuji

Small Satellite Conference

As the capabilities (through standardization and modular design approaches) and users (from universities to research laboratories to private companies) of nanosatellites increase, there is a commensurate need for dedicated launch access to space. This paper reviews recent development efforts related to Nano-Launcher, an orbital payload launch service for nano and microsatellites (1-10 kg and 10-100 kg to orbit). The system uses mainly existing elements in combination, based upon existing solid stages (such as the SpaceSpike-1 and 2, stages evolved from the JAXA/ISAS S-520 solid rocket) along with existing air-launch aircraft (such as the F-104 and F-15). Nano-Launcher is deemed to …

Tactical Satellite-3 Mission Overview And Initial Lessons Learned , Stanley Straight, Christina Doolittle, Thomas Cooley, James Gardner, Peter Armstrong, Richard Nadile, Thomas Davis Aug 2010

Tactical Satellite-3 Mission Overview And Initial Lessons Learned , Stanley Straight, Christina Doolittle, Thomas Cooley, James Gardner, Peter Armstrong, Richard Nadile, Thomas Davis

Small Satellite Conference

Tactical Satellite-3 (TacSat-3) was successfully launched on 19 May 09, and has provided key insights into hyperspectral imaging capabilities hosted on a small satellite platform. TacSat-3 has given insights into new concepts of operations in the tactical employment of satellites and the balance between on-board processing, automation and performing these functions on the ground. System design decisions made early in the program are traced to on-orbit impacts and contain significant lessons learned for future space missions. In conjunction with the mission partners such as the Operationally Responsive Space Office TacSat-3 has shown lessons in key areas of improving responsive space …
