The Organism/Organic Exposure to Orbital Stresses (O/OREOS) nanosatellite follows in the footsteps of the successful GeneSat-1 and PharmaSat missions to validate key technologies developed to conduct compelling science experiments in space for a small price tag. Developed by the Small Spacecraft Division at NASA Ames Research Center, the 5.5-kg 3U satellite contains two completely independent payloads and a novel drag-enhancing device which shortens the spacecraft’s orbital lifetime, thereby mitigating orbital debris. This paper provides an overview of the mission as well as an in-depth discussion of each payload and the de-orbit mechanism (DOM) while highlighting lessons learned from the spacecraft’s …

The Origin Of Large And Small Science Satellites At Nasa, Paul Hertz, Marc Allen, Gregory Williams

Small Satellite Conference

NASA’s Science Mission Directorate is currently operating 57 robotic science missions and developing 27 more for launch. These space missions address the Nation’s highest priority and most compelling science questions from space. Missions are prioritized for NASA development either through the National Academy of Sciences decadal surveys or through the evaluation and selection of competitively peer reviewed proposals. Small missions tend to be in the latter category. NASA issues regular solicitations for small, PI-led mission proposals, and NASA’s announcements of opportunity are open to all categories of proposers.

An Optical Payload For Cubesats , Seshupriya Alluru, Janise Mcnair

Small Satellite Conference

Optical wireless communications provide a promising, high bandwidth alternative to radio communications, where high performance links are desired. For large satellites (say, wet mass>1000kg), laser cross links have been successfully established since 2001 by various space agencies in Europe and Japan. Thus far, the cross-links have been able to achiever data rates in Gbps range for distances greater than 10,000km. Such gains would be monumental improvement for communications in small satellite domain (say, wet mass for Cubesats >10kg), where the typical communications payload users radio antenna that achieve an average data rate of 10kpbps.This paper proposes a promising laser …

The Radio Aurora Explorer – A Bistatic Radar Mission To Measure Space Weather Phenomenon , James Cutler, Matthew Bennett, Andrew Klesh, Hasan Bahcivan, Rick Doe

Small Satellite Conference

In this paper, we describe the Radio Aurora Explorer (RAX) and its space weather mission. RAX is a satellite mission funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study space weather, and is a joint effort between SRI International and the University of Michigan. The primary mission objective is to study plasma instabilities that lead to magnetic field-aligned irregularities (FAI) of electron density in the lower polar thermosphere (80-400 km). These irregularities are known to disrupt trans-ionospheric communication and navigation signals. The RAX mission will use a network of existing ground radars that will scatter signals off the FAI to …

Sapphire: A Small Satellite System For The Surveillance Of Space , Robert Leitch, Ian Hemphill

Small Satellite Conference

The tracking of man-made objects in Earth orbit is a crucial function of the Canadian Space Surveillance System (CSSS). This system will contribute information to the United States Space Surveillance Network (SSN) which maintains a global catalog of orbit elements for Resident Space Objects (RSOs). RSOs include active and inactive satellites, spent rocket bodies, and other pieces of orbital debris created by decades of human activity in space. Sapphire is a small satellite system that will form the centerpiece of the CSSS, providing an operationally flexible space-based platform for the precise tracking and identification of RSOs covering orbit altitudes in …

Cfs Prediction Of Winter Persistent Inversions In The Intermountain Region, Robert R. Gillies, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Jin Ho Yoon, Scott Weaver

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

A recent study by Gillies and others of persistent inversion events in the Intermountain West of the United States found a substantive linkage between the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) and the development of persistent inversion events. Given that NCEP’s Climate Forecast System (CFS) has demonstrated skill in the prediction of the ISO as far out as 1 month, it was decided to examine the CFS forecast’s capability in the prediction of such winter persistent inversions. After initial analysis, a simple regression scheme is proposed that is coupled to the CFS output of geopotential height as a way to predict the occurrence …

Tracking contemporary aspen sciences: a critical endeavor for land managers

Ron Ryel

"We know everything there is to know about aspen" has been a long-held and common opinion in the western aspen world. However, we are rapidly learning this is not true, and that management based on some of these opinions may not be appropriate or helpful in restoring or maintaining aspen. New knowledge and perspectives on aspen ecology and management may have profound effects on the future of aspen on western landscapes.

The Temple Recommend: A Solution To The Free-Rider Problem, Austin Bowles Aug 2010

The Temple Recommend: A Solution To The Free-Rider Problem, Austin Bowles

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Temple worship and geographical boundaries are unique features of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Our research uses economic theory to understand how the organizational benefits of the temple recommend system and the geographical ward boundaries may solve the market failures associated with religious organizations. These features of the LDS Church will be used to create a framework for understanding how the church limits free-riding and sub-optimal participation, which would result in increased efficiency and production of large religious benefits. Because the market failures faced by the church are the same as those faced by other …

Do Psychology Researchers Tell It Like It Is? A Microgenetic Analysis Of Research Strategies And Self-Report Accuracy, David F. Feldon Jul 2010

Do Psychology Researchers Tell It Like It Is? A Microgenetic Analysis Of Research Strategies And Self-Report Accuracy, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Acquiring research skills is considered to be a highly challenging aspect of developing expertise in the social sciences. Because instruction and mentoring in these skills are typically grounded in the self-report of researchers, difficulties in learning the material may be due to the content and accuracy of these explanations. Using a mixed-method, microgenetic design, this study examines the explanations of problem-solving processes by researchers along a continuum of expertise during simulated experiment design and subsequent data analysis. Findings indicate that participants’ self-explanations are largely inaccurate. Further, frequency of inaccurate statements is positively associated with the frequency of abstract cognitive processes, …

Measuring Relationships Between Camp Staff And Camper Developmental Outcomes: An Application Of Self-Determination Theory, Mark F. Roark, Gary D. Elis, Mary Sara Wells, Ann Gillard

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

While recent studies have suggested that positive developmental outcomes may result from participating in camp experiences, it is unclear what specific aspects of camp (e.g., staff dispositions, counselor teams, non-counselor staff) might influence these camper outcomes. Previous studies have measured the autonomy support of schoolteachers and found that more autonomy-supportive dispositions that, for example, engage autonomy, relatedness, and competence through the use of meaningful choice or rationale have positive effects on student developmental outcomes (e.g., intrinsic motivation, competence, self-esteem). Unlike schools, camps are noncompulsory recreation environments and most are outdoor-based. The existence of differences between the physical, social, and motivational …

Rural coastal aquifers are undergoing rapid changes due to increasing population, high water demand with expanding agricultural and domestic uses, and seawater intrusion due to unmanaged water pumping. The combined impact of these activities is the deterioration of groundwater quality, public health concerns, and unsustainable water demands. The Kalpitiya peninsula located northwest of Sri Lanka is one area undergoing such changes. This land area is limited and surrounded almost completely by sea and lagoon. This study consists of groundwater sampling and analysis, and vulnerability assessment using the DRASTIC method. The results reveal that the peninsula is experiencing multiple threats due …
