The Paleoecology And Geomorphology Of Holocene Deposits Of The Southern Malad River, Box Elder County, Utah, Ann Schaffer Elder May 1992

The Paleoecology And Geomorphology Of Holocene Deposits Of The Southern Malad River, Box Elder County, Utah, Ann Schaffer Elder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Widespread Lake Bonneville sediments have been modified by river aggradation and degradation associated with Holocene fluctuations in the Great Salt Lake. Exposures of exceptionally abundant and well-preserved molluscan deposits in the Bear River Valley, Utah, allow detailed paleoenvironmental reconstruction of Holocene environments. The exposed basal unit consists of largely unfossiliferous deltaic silts and clays deposited during Lake Bonneville time (roughly 11,000 - 13,000 yr B. P.). An unconformity representing at least 2000 yr separates the deltaic material from overlying highly fossiliferous stream sands. Eight species of molluscs, comprising a single community, occupied this low energy stream environment at 7690 ± …

Nature's Second Course: Water Culture In The Mormon Communities Of Cache Valley, Utah, 1860-1916, Kathryn T. Morse

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nineteenth-century Mormon settlers in Utah combined a unique set of religious beliefs with a fervent agrarianism and a strong sense of community. They encountered a specific arid environment along the Wasatch Front. A distinctive cultural set of irrigation institutions and practices developed out of the complex interchanges between nature and culture in Cache Valley, Utah, between 1860 and 1916. The structure of water flow, and conflicts over water rights and responsibilities, reflected the fundamental tensions within Mormon communities between individual gain and collective progress; it also reflected the patriarchal essence of Mormon culture.

The season-to-season workings of irrigation institutions that …

Characteristics Related To The Incidence Of Osteoporosis In Two Distinct Female Populations, Deborah A. Pyke May 1992

Characteristics Related To The Incidence Of Osteoporosis In Two Distinct Female Populations, Deborah A. Pyke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Osteoporosis is responsible for approximately 1.3 to 1.5 million fractures per year in the United States. The risk of osteoporosis increases with age, especially among postmenopausal women, and with lifestyle factors such as the use of certain drugs, heavy alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, high caffeine intake, and sedentary living. Genetic factors that may influence susceptibility to osteoporosis include a positive family history of the disease, or a low weight - for-height ratio. In some cases, race and geographic location may increase or decrease the risk of osteoporosis. Known protective factors include obesity, estrogen replacement therapy, weight bearing exercise, and possibly …

Use Of Landsat Imagery And Geographical Information Systems In The Assessment Of Rangeland Cover And Wildlife Habitat, Mary Hunnicutt Jan 1992

Use Of Landsat Imagery And Geographical Information Systems In The Assessment Of Rangeland Cover And Wildlife Habitat, Mary Hunnicutt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The first chapter of this thesis reviews applications of satellite remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) in wildlife studies. The simpler uses of remote sensing are for habitat mapping, often using satellite imagery classified for other natural resources. More sophisticated applications incorporate remotely sensed data into a GIS for the digital manipulation of data planes. The most advanced applications are those which use remote sensing and GIS in models predicting habitat quality or population levels.

The second chapter reports how brightness values of six Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) bands were used in multiple linear regressions to predict percent cover …

Effects Of Selected Insects On Seed Production Of Hycrest Crested Wheatgrass, Ali Yusuf Issa

Biology

Studies were conducted to explore the relationship of common insect pests associated with the cultivar 'Hycrest' crested wheatgrass, Agropyron cristatum (L.) and A. desertorum (Fisher x Link). Insect population surveys were conducted on three farms during three summers to determine relative insect numbers. Thrips, Trigonotylus ruficornis, and Lygus hesperus were found to be the most abundant insect pests infesting Hycrest plants. A broad population peak was observed covering most of July through August for thrips, T. ruficornis, and L. hesperus. In addition to pest insects, the following beneficial insects were collected in significant numbers: Nabidae, Coccinellidae, Collops …

Elemental Relationships In Rock Varnish As Seen With Scanning Electron Microscopy And Energy Dispersive X-Ray Elemental Line Profiling, Robert Raymond Jr., Steven L. Reneau, Charles D. Harrington Jan 1991

Elemental Relationships In Rock Varnish As Seen With Scanning Electron Microscopy And Energy Dispersive X-Ray Elemental Line Profiling, Robert Raymond Jr., Steven L. Reneau, Charles D. Harrington

Scanning Microscopy

The heterogeneous nature of rock varnish requires a thorough understanding of elemental and mineralogic compositions before chemical variability of rock varnish may be confidently related to varnish age or to past geochemical environments. Elemental relationships in rock varnish were examined using scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with an elemental line profiling routine using semi-quantitative, energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. Results of our analyses suggest: 1) variations in cation concentrations used in varnish cation-ratio dating relate more specifically to variations in detritus concentration within the varnish than to element mobility as defined by weathering indices; 2) Mn:Fe ratios may be a poor indicator …

Barium Concentration In Rock Varnish: Implications For Calibrated Rock Varnish Dating Curves, C. D. Harrington, D. J. Krier, R. Raymond Jr., S. L. Reneau

Scanning Microscopy

Cation-ratio dating of rock varnish is a recently developed technique for obtaining surface exposure ages of a wide variety of geomorphic surfaces. As originally proposed, the technique utilizes a ratio among minor cations [(K+Ca)/Ti] in rock varnish. Although this varnish cation ratio is related to the Ti concentration, it can also be affected by the presence of Ba that may be partially included in the analyzed concentration of Ti. Barium is a minor constituent found in virtually all rock varnishes sampled from the Lake Mead area, Las Vegas Valley, and the Crater Flat region of southern Nevada. Barium is heterogeneously …

Wyoming Statewide Wilderness Study Report Wilderness Study Area Specific Recommendations, United States Bureau Of Land Management

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The recommendation for this WSA is to designate 17,150 acres of BLM land and 1,390 acres of State land as wilderness. This alternative is considered to be the environmentally preferable alternative as it would result in the least change in the natural environment over the long term. The entire 17,150 acres of federal land and 1,390 acres of state land within the WSA are recommended for wilderness designation and are shown on the Bobcat Draw Badlands WSA map. The state lands would be recommended for acquisition to enhance the manageability of the area as wilderness.

"Lone Star," A Small Communication Satellite For Texas, J.P. Andrews, N. Eaker, J.D. King

Small Satellite Conference

The Texas State Legislature has passed a bill recommending that the state examine the feasibility of developing a "home grown" satellite for communications applications. Such a satellite would be built in Texas by a state, industry and university consortium with the intent that it be launched by a Texas built launch vehicle. This paper reports on a quick look design and trade-off study that was performed to determine the characteristics and possible configurations that such a small satellite system would have. The communications link budget is discussed and used to define the communications payload that would be carried by the …

Commercial Application Of Eyesat, Dino Lorenzini, Doug Loughmiller

Small Satellite Conference

With the continued growth in geosynchronous satellite communications transponders today, why could anyone consider using a low earth orbit, low data rate, limited availability satellite? Several factors have proven to be important as our experience with small, low earth orbit satellites increases: user priority, simple access, low investment cost, portability, global reach, and flexibility in meeting specialized requirements. The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the potential commercial applications of the AMSAT Microsatellite. Four of these spacecrafts are currently in sun-synchronous orbit, being tested and used by amateur radio operators around the world. Interferometrics Inc. of Vienna, …

Small Satellite Constellations For Ehf Polar Coverage, William Acker Aug 1990

Small Satellite Constellations For Ehf Polar Coverage, William Acker

Small Satellite Conference

Because atmospheric attenuation is greater for EHF frequencies than lower frequencies, it is necessary to design EHF satellite constellations so that the minimum elevation angles of the ground station antennas are larger than for satellite communication links using lower frequencies. The need for larger elevation angles reduces the coverage provided by geosynchronous equatorial satellites. This paper examines how the size of the polar regions not receiving adequate EHF coverage varies with the number of equally spaced equatorial satellites. The suitabilities of 24 hour Tundra, 12 hour Molniya, and six hour circular orbits for providing the missing coverage are then examined. …

Irrigation Management Considering Soil Variability And Climatic Uncertainty, Dani Or May 1990

Irrigation Management Considering Soil Variability And Climatic Uncertainty, Dani Or

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The increase in multipurpose use of water resources, dwindling xii water supplies, and a decline in the economic viability of many agricultural operations make efficient irrigation management imperative. Soil variability and climatic uncertainty are major obstacles to efficient irrigation management due to a lack of reliable information for decision making. This study was aimed at identifying sources of uncertainty and examining methods for reducing the effects of uncertainty on irrigation scheduling schemes.

A method for spatial-temporal estimation that combines spatial information from few measurements with a physically based model of the system dynamics is proposed. The spatial phase of the …

Tourism Dependency And Its Correlation To Selected Socioeconomic Indicators In Utah, Diane S. Gooch May 1990

Tourism Dependency And Its Correlation To Selected Socioeconomic Indicators In Utah, Diane S. Gooch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper investigates the relationship between tourism and well being, or quality-of-life, within eighteen counties in Utah. To evaluate the relationship, comparisons of the counties' differing levels of tourism versus their levels of welfare are necessary. To make these comparisons, three basic steps were followed. First, a social ordering model was derived. The proposed social ordering model was based upon Maslow's theory of the hierarchy of human needs. By utilizing his theory, both economic and noneconomic indicators were identified, and a basis was provided upon which to judge the differing positions of well-being. Factor analysis was applied to this model …

Natural-Resources Education In Utah's Public Schools, John J. Van Niel May 1990

Natural-Resources Education In Utah's Public Schools, John J. Van Niel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Several aspects of natural-resources education were explored in this study. First, a statewide survey of science, social studies, and elementary teachers was conducted to determine the current form and extent of natural-resources education in Utah. Returns were received from 51% of the surveyed teachers. The percent of time devoted to natural resources, the factors affecting natural-resources instruction, and the need to improve that instruction were assessed.

Utilizing that information, the Natural-Resources Curriculum Framework was developed. The Framework is designed to provide educators with the essential concepts to be included in a comprehensive natural-resources program.

Finally, examples of classroom support materials …

Encouraging Navajo Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Wanda Benale May 1990

Encouraging Navajo Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Wanda Benale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The transition of Navajo Indian children from boarding schools to public schools has brought about the challenge of involving parents in their children's education. These people have previously been accustomed to having the education of their children left to the distant schools, with little opportunity for parental involvement. As a consequence, it is often difficult to get these parents to accept the schools' invitations to participate in conferences and other activities when parental involvement is important.

This study reviewed all of the reports that could be found of programs involving Indians and non-Indian parents in their children's education. These programs …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis studies the development of social and legal institutions that have controlled the pattern of water development in Utah from 1847 to 1947. The thesis is divided into three parts to facilitate the study of the diverse influences on water development. The first part deals with the mormon church and pioneer influences and private development during the late 1800s. The second begins with statehood and records the changes in the state's institutions up to 1947. The third part is a summary of the entire process. It relates pioneer, private, and state influences to each other and the current (1989) …

Bed-Load Transport Of Mixed-Size Sediment: Fractional Transport Rates, Bed Forms, And The Development Of A Coarse Bed-Surface Layer, Peter Wilcock, J. B. Southard Jan 1989

Bed-Load Transport Of Mixed-Size Sediment: Fractional Transport Rates, Bed Forms, And The Development Of A Coarse Bed-Surface Layer, Peter Wilcock, J. B. Southard

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Fractional transport rates, bed surface texture, and bed configuration were measured after a mixed size sediment had reached an equilibrium transport state for seven different flow strengths in a recirculating laboratory flume. Fractional transport rates were also measured at the beginning of each run when the bed was well mixed and planar. The start-up observations allow us to describe the variation of fractional transport rates with bed shear stress for a constant bed surface texture and bed configuration. The start-up and equilibrium observations together allow, for the first time, an unambiguous description of the mutual adjustment among the transport, the …
