Think-Tanking The Challenges In Three Regions: The Colorado Plateau, John C. Schmidt, Barbara R. Rushmore Jan 1995

Think-Tanking The Challenges In Three Regions: The Colorado Plateau, John C. Schmidt, Barbara R. Rushmore

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Unique features of the Colorado Plateau include aridity and the associated importance of water, topographic control on local ecosystems, large urban centers on the periphery but none within the region, and a combination of resource-extraction industries and tourism. Potential constraints to EM are conflicts in the legislative and administrative framework, inadequate staffing and funding of the agencies, insufficient communication among elements of the public, and the difficulty of achieving large number of monitoring and research sites, abundance of data, grass-roots ties to the land, and agency commitment. Needs for implementation are definition of EM, implementation initiated at the local level, …

What Is It That Is Being Referred To As Ecosystem Management?, Nathan M. Bentley, Merland G. Halisky, Aaron B. Price Jan 1995

What Is It That Is Being Referred To As Ecosystem Management?, Nathan M. Bentley, Merland G. Halisky, Aaron B. Price

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The wide range of definitions of ecosystem management depend upon the values of the persons defining it. While many of the speakers did not provide an explicit definition, four themes common to their presentations were ecological, social, political, and economical. We distilled from these presentations the following: ecosystem management is the manipulation of an ecosystem with all its species and functions to achieve specified social goals, and policed by the political system for some specified, sustainable economic return. A major source of contention is whose values should prevail. Since societal values change over time, EM must be flexible. Ecologically clear-cut …

The Identification, Distribution, Impacts, Biology And Management Of Noxious Rangeland Weeds, Roger L. Sheley Oct 1994

The Identification, Distribution, Impacts, Biology And Management Of Noxious Rangeland Weeds, Roger L. Sheley

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This document provides a discussion of the biology and management of exotic rangeland weeds which are a threat to native ecosystems of the western United States. Chapter 1 describes a generalized approach for managing noxious weed infested rangeland, while Chapter 2 focuses on preventing noxious weed invasion. In some cases, noxious weeds readily invade riparian areas, and because of the sensitive nature of these ecosystems Chapter 3 is devoted to riparian weed management. The following 13 chapters describe the identification, origin, history, distribution, potential invasion, impacts, biology and ecology, and management of specific noxious rangeland weeds.

Discussion And Measurement Of Soil Erosion In Iceland, Kimberly Jane Richardson May 1994

Discussion And Measurement Of Soil Erosion In Iceland, Kimberly Jane Richardson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Soil erosion has occurred since the beginning of time. It is a natural process, but one that has been increasing at an alarming rate. Once soil is eroded--whether it is blown out to sea or washed down a river to sedimentize a lake--it is lost. It is almost impossible to reestablish similar soil components and characteristics in a given system. Since soil and vegetation reestablishment is expensive, the prevention of soil erosion by controlling its causes has become the most cost-effective reclamation effort.

After spending six months in Iceland, I wrote this paper on the unique erosion problems facing that …

Fuel Load And Plant Community Dynamics Of Bryce Canyon National Park, Doug W. Wight May 1994

Fuel Load And Plant Community Dynamics Of Bryce Canyon National Park, Doug W. Wight

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A comprehensive fuel load assessment of all plant communities in Bryce Canyon National Park is provided. Fuel loads by community type are pooled into "fuel type associations" based on similarity in predicted fire behavior, and the fuel type associations are mapped throughout the Park. For each fuel type association, a series of fire behavior simulations is presented describing expected rates of spread and intensities for typical conditions in each month of the fire season and for a worst-case scenario. These fire behavior predictions provide guidelines for writing prescribed burning prescriptions or for quickly assessing the need for possible fire suppression …

Modeling Forest Dynamics At The Landscape Scale: Integrating A Computer Simulation Model And Geographic Information System, David W. Betz May 1994

Modeling Forest Dynamics At The Landscape Scale: Integrating A Computer Simulation Model And Geographic Information System, David W. Betz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research demonstrates the ability to integrate a computer simulation model with a geographic information system (GIS) to predict forest community dynamics in both the spatial and temporal dimensions. A landscape scale computer simulation model, LANDSIM, was coupled with the Arc/Info GIS to simulate the interaction of forest fires and forest succession at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, and to produce maps of the predicted community types. The sensitivity of the model was tested with respect to the fire return interval, maximum neighbor spread, and the effect of slope upon the spread of simulated fires. The model predicts that each …

Identifying Buyer Market Areas And The Impact Of Buyer Concentration In Feeder Cattle Markets Using Mapping And Spatial Statistics, Deevon Bailey, B. Wade Brorsen, Michael R. Thomsen

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The size and shape of market areas for buyers from four major cattle feeding areas (Dodge City, Amarillo, Omaha, and Greeley) are determined by mapping data from the nation's largest video auction. Spatial statistics are also examined to determine their ability to identify market areas for feeder cattle. Mapping shows that procurement areas for feeder cattle buyers are large, irregularly shaped, and overlap substantially. Currently available spatial statistics were not found to be helpful in defining market areas so a new statistic (BTiJ was dev~loped to determine primary market areas. Feeder cattle buyers behave as oligopsonists in counties where most …

The Making Of A Literary Map, Joyce Kinkead Jan 1994

The Making Of A Literary Map, Joyce Kinkead

English Faculty Publications

David Lee, fondly known in Utah as the "pig poet" for his collection The Porcine Canticles (1984), tells the story of his seventh-grade teacher's poetry assignment from a Texas childhood:

She sent us to the li-berry to find a pome. We were supposed to change some words to make it our pome. I came back with "Hell hath no fury like a sow with pigs." She gave me an F. (Magid 1993, 1)

Today, when David Lee reads one of his pig poems to audiences around the state, they chuckle and applaud.

The Source Hydrology Of Severe Sustained Drought In Th Southwestern U.S., David G. Tarboton

Reports

This paper considers the risk of drought and develops drough scenarios for use in the study of severe sustained drought in the Southwestern United States. The focus is on the Colorado River gbasin and regions to which Colorado River water is exported, especially southern California, which depends on water from the Colorado River as well as the four major rivers in northern California. Drought scenarios are developed using estimates of unimpaired historic streamflow as well as reconstructions of streamflow based on tree ring widths. Drought scenarios in the Colorado River are defined on the basis of annual flow at Lees …

Predator Depredations On Sheep In Pennsylvania, Gary W. Witmer, Arnold Hayden, Michael Pipas Oct 1993

Predator Depredations On Sheep In Pennsylvania, Gary W. Witmer, Arnold Hayden, Michael Pipas

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

The eastern coyote (Canis Iatrans) has become common and widespread in many eastern states. We surveyed 331 sheep producers in Pennsylvania (PA); 22% reported predator losses in 1991, primarily to dogs and coyotes. Losses were heaviest in the southwest part of PA and producers reporting losses tended to have more sheep and more acreage in pasture. To reduce losses, producers used lambing sheds, fences, guard dogs and donkeys, confinement of sheep, trapping, and shooting. It appears that we can expect greater depredations in the future because of increased coyote numbers and a relatively low level of protection of …

A Modified Fractal Dimension As A Measure Of Landscape Diversity, Eric R. Olsen, R. Douglas Ramsey, David S. Winn Oct 1993

A Modified Fractal Dimension As A Measure Of Landscape Diversity, Eric R. Olsen, R. Douglas Ramsey, David S. Winn

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Fractals have been used recently to describe spatial patterns in many landscape-level applications. One such application has been to measure the geometric complexity of landscape features. This paper describes a modified fractal dimension to be used as a measure of distribution of landscape diversity in a classified GIs image. The resulting modified fractal dimension calculation consistently describes diversity for the landscape, accounting not only for patch shape, but also for patch juxtaposition and evenness.

Sea-Launch For Small Satellites: An American/Russian Joint Venture, John Draim Sep 1993

Sea-Launch For Small Satellites: An American/Russian Joint Venture, John Draim

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes practical means of bypassing the two major impediments to the commercial exploitation of space. These two impediments or constraints, are the affordability, reliability, and availability of launch vehicles on the one hand, and the affordability, availability, and flexibility of launch facilities on the other hand. As to the former, US launch vehicles are noted for their technological complexity, their high cost, and their susceptibility to single point failures. As to the latter, our land launch facilities are costly, inadequate and congested. Schedule delays on one launch cause delays for all succeeding launches from a given launch pad. …

Water

This document was prepared primarily by stereoscopic analysis of high altitude aerial photographs. Wetlands were identified on the photographs based on vegetation, visible hydrology, and geography in accordance with classification of Wetland and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (FWS/OBS-79/31 December 1979). The aerial photographs typically reflect conditions during the specific year and season when they were taken. In addition there is a margin of error inherent in the use of the aerial photographs.

Growth And Water Relations Of Liquidambar Styraciflua L In An Urban Park And Plaza, Roger Kjelgren, James R. Clark

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Growth and water relations of 10-year-old sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) street trees were studied in sites with low and high potential evapotranspiration to determine how these differences are integrated by growth and water relations over time. The trees were located in the parking strip between the curb and sidewalk at a partially vegetated urban park and an urban plaza in Seattle, Washington. Crown size, and seasonal and diurnal stomatal conductance and water potential, as well as diurnal air temperature and humidity, were measured over 2 growing seasons. Yearly trunk growth since transplanting was measured from increment cores. Vapor pressure …

Future Water Demand In Cache Valley, Utah, Chris C. Saunders May 1993

Future Water Demand In Cache Valley, Utah, Chris C. Saunders

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present investigation examined the current water demand characteristics and the future water demand of Cache Valley, Utah for the time period of 1990-2010. The demand attributable to agriculture and seven nonagricultural economics sectors was determined and forecasts were performed based on those demand values.

Linear regression, extrapolation, and alternative futures forecasting methods were applied and the various results compared against each other. Three different scenarios were calculated for residential demand to represent different sources and composition of demand information. It was determined that consideration of water demand data excluding Logan City provided the best statistical description of water demand. …

Smith Wells: Stagecoach Inn On The Nine Mile Road, H. Bert Jenson Apr 1993

Smith Wells: Stagecoach Inn On The Nine Mile Road, H. Bert Jenson

English Faculty Publications

By THE MIDDLE OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY the forging furnaces of western expansionism had wrought a tough breed of pioneers who were making their way into the Uintah Basin of eastern Utah. As early as October 3, 1861, the date President Lincoln established the Uintah Indian Reservation in that area, some white settlers were circumscribed by reservation boundaries. Other whites followed to establish trading posts among the Utes and to perform government service in connection with the newly named Indian lands.

Technology: Its Influence In The Secondary School Upon Achievement In Academic Subjects And Upon Students' Attitude Toward Technology, Dan L. Householder, Barbara Bolin

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Many programs in the United States have undertaken to show the benefits to students of integrating academic disciplines. The TEC-Lab project, however, is unique among them because of its innovative approach. First, the TEC-Lab students are in senior high school, grades 9 to 12, while most innovative efforts are concentrated at the elementary and middle school levels. Second, the TEC-Lab approach uses technology as a means of meeting the usual academic requirements, rather than attempting to integrate the other academic areas into technology. The difference between these two approaches is subtle but profound. The first semester of the project was …

Gap Analysis: A Geographic Approach For Assessing National Biological Diversity, Thomas C. Edwards Jr., J. Michael Scott, Collin G. Homer, R. Douglas Ramsey

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The global concern with reduction in biodiversity has generated responses in the United States, such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Although the ESA has had some effect, the species-by-species approach presents a problem because it does not consider the broad ecological principles of biodiversity including the need for balance between different species and their combined influence on a given habitat. There is an implicit assumption that national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and other protected areas provide for conservation needs. However, these areas have not necessarily been delineated on the basis of animal habitat zones or ecologically significant units. Gap Analysis …

Photosynthesis And Leaf Morphology Of Liquidambar Styraciflua L. Under Variable Urban Radiant Energy Conditions, Roger Kjelgren, James R. Clark Sep 1992

Photosynthesis And Leaf Morphology Of Liquidambar Styraciflua L. Under Variable Urban Radiant Energy Conditions, Roger Kjelgren, James R. Clark

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Diminished sunlight, characteristic of urban canyons, has been suggested as being potentially limiting to plant growth. This study investigated the response of sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) to variable irradiance in a range of urban locations. Diurnal photosynthesis was measured in situ on mature trees, comparing an open site at an urban park with an urban canyon that received 4 h of midday sun in midsummer. Photosynthesis for trees growing in the canyon was lower both during shaded and sunlit periods compared with trees at the park. Photosynthesis of detached shoots in a growth chamber was greater in canyon than park …

A support tool for ground-water management decision making involves integration of a multiobjective optimization model, GIS and graphics software. Two results are improved consideration of spatial data within the optimization model and improved conversion of optimal strategies to real-world application. Another result is improved visualization of the trade-offs involved between conflicting management goals.

Utah And Mormon Migration In The Twentieth Century: 1890 To 1955, Todd Forsyth Carney May 1992

Utah And Mormon Migration In The Twentieth Century: 1890 To 1955, Todd Forsyth Carney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Most Utahns spent the years between Mormon entry into the Great Basin and statehood for Utah pursuing the traditional frontier-rural life, a mode which had been an integral part of the American experience since earliest colonial times. After the Mormon capitulation and statehood, Utah moved into a transitional phase, a phase between the traditional and the modern in which elements of each were mixed and mingled. This phase ended with the Second World War.

This transition to modernity affected migration behavior. Seen in light of migration theory, the Utah experience is something of an anomaly. One theory says that migration …
