Urinary Stone Proteins: An Update, J. P. Binette, M. B. Binette, M. A. Gawinowicz, N. Kendrick

Scanning Microscopy

The discovery of an organic component in kidney stones dates back to 1684. More than 150 years elapsed before the incrustation of this organic component, which is now called the matrix, was proposed as the mechanism of stone formation. The composition of the matrix remained largely unknown until the development of electron microscopy and the advances in biochemistry combined in the 1950's to usher in the modern era of renal stone matrix investigation. Composed mainly of selectively incorporated proteins generally characterized by high glutamic and aspartic acid content and the frequent occurrence of y-carboxyglutamic acid, the matrix dis-plays a variable …

Estimating Local Bed Shear Stress From Velocity Observations, Peter Wilcock Jan 1996

Estimating Local Bed Shear Stress From Velocity Observations, Peter Wilcock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Replicate velocity observations using conventional equipment under typical field conditions are used to evaluate the precision of different methods for estimating local boundary shear stress from velocity measurements. The bed shear velocity u, can be estimated within 3% using the depth-averaged velocity in the vertically averaged logarithmic velocity profile. To be accurate, this method is limited to relatively simple flow geometries which may be expected to have the appropriate velocity structure. Estimates of u, made using a single near-bed velocity observation are less precise by a factor of 3 because of the larger uncertainty associated with a single observation. Accuracy …

Recreation As An Economic Development Strategy: Some Evidence From Utah, John E. Keith, Christopher Fawson, Tsangyao Chang Jan 1996

Recreation As An Economic Development Strategy: Some Evidence From Utah, John E. Keith, Christopher Fawson, Tsangyao Chang

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

An examination of employment patterns in rural Utah counties suggests that those counties that primarily rely on tourism and recreation to maintain economic viability exhibit annual employment variability much greater than those counties that rely on alternative economic activity. Compared to long-run boomlbust employment cycles, which are prevalent in counties that rely on resource extraction, annual recreation, and tourism employment cycles, are at least as variable and of much shorter duration due to the seasonal nature of tourist visitation patterns. As a result, local infrastructure planning for an economy based on recreation and tourism will likely involve considerable fiscal stress …

Modeling Ecological Constraints On Tropical Forest Management: Comment, Christopher B. Barrett, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 1996

Modeling Ecological Constraints On Tropical Forest Management: Comment, Christopher B. Barrett, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We comment on four aspects of Albers' [1] model of ecological constraints on tropical forest management. Albers structures her model in a highly asymmetric manner, with strong, uniform biases against development and in favor of preservation. Despite Albers' repeated claims that her model is "complete" and that it has significant implications for tropical forest management, we contend instead that the results of a truly general, empirically defensible model are inherently ambiguous. Spatial and intertemporal dimensions clearly matter, but they do not point as neatly in favor of preservation as Albers would have us believe.

Migration's Role In Seasonal Farm Labor Markets: The Case Of Washington State, Dawn D. Thilmany Jan 1996

Migration's Role In Seasonal Farm Labor Markets: The Case Of Washington State, Dawn D. Thilmany

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Do bilateral real exchange rates contain stochastic trends? This paper concentrates on univariate time-series models and uses the Beveridge-Nelson decomposition method to provide evidence that real exchange rates for dollar-deutsche mark, dollar-yen, dollar-pound, and dollar-Swiss franc contain stochastic trends. Using quarterly data for the period 1971 I to 1993 IV, we find that real exchange rates are nonstationary stochastic process which do not revert to a deterministic path. Two implications of this empirical findings is highlighted in this study. First, what is perceived as excessive fluctuations in the real exchange rate may not actually be so since the equilibrium itself …

Observations Of Flow And Sediment Entrainment On A Large Gravel-Bed River, Peter Wilcock, A. F. Barta, C. C. Shea, G. M. Kondolf, W. V. G. Matthews, J. C. Pitlick Jan 1996

Observations Of Flow And Sediment Entrainment On A Large Gravel-Bed River, Peter Wilcock, A. F. Barta, C. C. Shea, G. M. Kondolf, W. V. G. Matthews, J. C. Pitlick

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Constant-discharge reservoir releases on the Trinity River, California, provide an unusual opportunity to unambiguously relate flow and gravel entrainment on a large gravel-bed river. Bed shear stress т0 was estimated using local observations of depth-averaged velocity. Gravel entrainment was measured using large tracer gravel installations. Lateral variability of т0 is large, even for straight channels with simple, trough-like geometry. No simple relation exists between local and cross-section mean values of т0 . Fine grains (less than 8 mm; 20–30% of the bed material) are transported at lower discharges than coarse grains. Scour to the base of the bed surface layer …

The Flushing Flow Problem: Defining And Evaluating Objectives, G. M. Kondolf, Peter Wilcock Jan 1996

The Flushing Flow Problem: Defining And Evaluating Objectives, G. M. Kondolf, Peter Wilcock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Reservoir releases may be specified for the purpose of maintaining or improving the downstream channel and habitat. A wide variety of ecological or management objectives may be defined for such flushing flows (which may be broadly divided into sediment maintenance and channel maintenance flows). To specify a particular discharge and water volume for a flushing flow requires that the ecological or management objectives be translated into specific physical objectives for which flows can be specified. Flushing objectives that cannot be translated into definable flows are of little practical use, regardless of their intrinsic importance. Once defined, flushing flow objectives may …

Postings On A Genre Of E-Mail, Michael Spooner, Kathleen Yancey

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

I was talking with a novelist recently about various kinds of writing-nothing special, just happy-hour talk-and I found my earnest self assuring him that, oh yes, academic writing nowadays will tolerate a number of different styles and voices. (I should know, right? I'm in academic publishing.) He choked; he slapped my arm; he laughed out loud. I don't remember if he spit his drink back in the glass. Silly me, I was serious. And, among other things, I was thinking about this essay/dialogue, in which we're turning discourse conventions of the net - often a rather casual medium - to …

Employment Stability And The Role Of Sectoral Dominance In Rural Economies, Christopher Fawson, Dawn Thilmany, John E. Keith Jan 1996

Employment Stability And The Role Of Sectoral Dominance In Rural Economies, Christopher Fawson, Dawn Thilmany, John E. Keith

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Tourism-based rural economic development schemes are of great interest to many states that once relied on extractive industries, particularly in the West. This study analyzes the potential labor market implications of such development strategies, with a focus on employment stability and persistence. Although trade and service employment has increased significantly, strong low-frequency cycles underlie these labor markets. In short, it is imperative that rural economic development strategies account for the role of sectoral dominance in evaluating the trade-offbetween low-frequency and high-frequency employment cycles.

Subdiscipline-Specific Journal Rankings In Economics, Christopher B. Barrett, Aliakbar Olia, Deevon Bailey Jan 1996

Subdiscipline-Specific Journal Rankings In Economics, Christopher B. Barrett, Aliakbar Olia, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

In light of widespread specialization of research and teaching, it seems appropriate to supplement the existing general rankings of economics journals with subdiscipline-specific rankings. That is the primary objective of this paper. The availability of subdiscipline-specific rankings also permits both (i) alternative journal ranking methods for the general discipline that account for the breadth of a journal's impact across specialized fields, and (ii) estimation of the relative weights implicitly associated with each field in traditional disciplinary journal rankings. The results are robust to the exclusion of self-citations.

Pluralism, Science, Ethics, And The Intersecting Spheres Of Social Concerns And Environmentalism, Christopher B. Barrett, Raymond E. Grizzle Jan 1996

Pluralism, Science, Ethics, And The Intersecting Spheres Of Social Concerns And Environmentalism, Christopher B. Barrett, Raymond E. Grizzle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds on alternative perspectives offered by the environmental and sustainability traditions to advance a holistic yet practical conceptual model that explicitly integrates social and environmental concerns. Ours is a pluralistic approach founded on synthesis. Employing the economic concept of path dependence, we emphasize that there exist multiple paths society can follow in environmental ethics and policy, but that onc e one has been chosen, implicitly or explicitly, there may be little opportunity to reverse such choices. Hence, the importance of process to the pursuit of social and environmental objectives.

Immigration To Utah Communities: The Role Of Agriculture And Rural Development, Dawn D. Thilmany Jan 1996

Immigration To Utah Communities: The Role Of Agriculture And Rural Development, Dawn D. Thilmany

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The relatively small agricultural sector in Utah has meant there were relatively few migrant farmworkers and, thus, Hispanics in the state. Given the notable economic growth in recent years, the tight labor market, and the demographic and employment trends in Utah, the significant increase in Hispanic settlement in Utah may not be surprising. This study analyzes population and employment growth in rural Utah among Hispanics and presents two brief case studies of specific communities and industries. The results clearly illustrate the emerging issues associated with the changing face of rural America in the Intermountain West.

Specification Of Sediment Maintenance Flows For A Large Gravel-Bed River, Peter Wilcock, G. M. Kondolg, W. V. G. Matthews, A. F. Barta Jan 1996

Specification Of Sediment Maintenance Flows For A Large Gravel-Bed River, Peter Wilcock, G. M. Kondolg, W. V. G. Matthews, A. F. Barta

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Reservoir releases may be specified to flush interstitial fine sediment from gravel beds in the river downstream. Choice of an effective flow depends on trade-offs among discharge, flow duration, and pool dredging as they determine rates of bed mobilization, sand removal, and gravel loss. A basis for evaluating these trade-offs is developed with an approximate method appropriate to the sparse data typically available. Sand and gravel transport are represented with rating curves. Approximate methods are introduced for estimating effective gravel entrainment, subsurface sand supply, and pool sediment trapping. These are combined in a sand routing algorithm to evaluate flushing alternatives …

A Strategy For Integrating Principles And Concepts Of Wildlife Damage Control Into The School Curriculum, Thomas A. Eddy Nov 1995

A Strategy For Integrating Principles And Concepts Of Wildlife Damage Control Into The School Curriculum, Thomas A. Eddy

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

This paper reports an approach to educating today's youth concerning the importance of regulating numbers of wildlife species that threaten property, products and health. The emphases are on preparing teachers to integrate principles and concepts into the existing curricular materials, justifying control measures with ecological understandings and economic information and dealing effectively with sensitive animal rights issues. Opportunities for integration of specific wildlife damage control topics are suggested for lessons in the life sciences, social sciences, health, language arts and mathematics. Examples of conflict between groups of different opinions about the seriousness of a pest's activities or appropriateness of control …

A Phylogeny Of The Genus Amaranthus (Amaranthaceae): Restriction Site Analysis Of Pcr-Amplified Chloroplast And Nuclear Dna, Karen Zak Lanoue May 1995

A Phylogeny Of The Genus Amaranthus (Amaranthaceae): Restriction Site Analysis Of Pcr-Amplified Chloroplast And Nuclear Dna, Karen Zak Lanoue

Biology

Amaranthus is a genus containing approximately 60 species, of which three are cultivated because their seeds exhibit a high protein content compared to the traditional monocot grains. Many wild Amaranthus species possess agriculturally desirable traits like drought and salt tolerance, and pathogen resistance. A phylogenetic tree of the genus Amaranthus was constructed in order to elucidate the relationships between the wild and cultivated Amaranthus species for breeding purposes in order to establish amaranth as a valuable alternative dry-land crop. Our tree was based upon restriction site analysis of two chloroplast DNA regions and a nuclear DNA region. The chloroplast regions …

Saint-Exupéry's Confession: The Little Prince As Autobiography And Credo, John L. Needham May 1995

Saint-Exupéry's Confession: The Little Prince As Autobiography And Credo, John L. Needham

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

At some time, everyone reads The Little Prince. And most readers take great interest in its exotic story of the solitary heir of Asteroid B-612. "He is a cosmic urchin who leaves his asteroid," writes biographer, Stacy Schiff,

because of a misunderstanding with a troublesome rose; he makes a speedy survey of adult logic in six visits to neighboring asteroids, each [inhabited] by a man more ridiculous than the last; he lands in the Sahara, where he meets the aviator who serves as the book's narrator; and learns a few crucial lessons from a fox before disappearing into the air. …

Evaluation Of Synthetic Unit Hydrograph Techniques For Utah Probable Maximum Flood Determinations, Ashraf Mohammed Shammet May 1995

Evaluation Of Synthetic Unit Hydrograph Techniques For Utah Probable Maximum Flood Determinations, Ashraf Mohammed Shammet

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Every dam must be capable of safely passing a predetermined flood magnitude. For high-hazard dams, it is a common practice to require that this flood be the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The determination of the PMF starts with the determination of the Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP). We used the generalized estimates of the PMP as outlined in Hydrometeorological Report (HMR) 49. In this study we used the storm event model approach to convert the PMP into PMF. Different synthetic unit hydrograph (SUH) techniques were then used in the conversion process. The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) curve number method was used …

Late Quaternary Glacial Geology, Shoreline Morphology, And Tephrochronology Of The Lliamna/Naknek/Brooks Lake Area, Southwestern Alaska, Karen B. Stilwell May 1995

Late Quaternary Glacial Geology, Shoreline Morphology, And Tephrochronology Of The Lliamna/Naknek/Brooks Lake Area, Southwestern Alaska, Karen B. Stilwell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study focuses on the late-Wisconsin Brooks Lake glaciation, lake-level fluctuations, and volcanic deposits in the lliamna/Naknek/Brooks Lake area on the northern Alaska Peninsula, southwestern Alaska. The Brooks Lake glaciation consists of five stades, from youngest to oldest: Kvichak, Iliamna, Newhalen, Iliuk, and Ukak. This thesis reassigns the type Mak Hill moraine to a pre-late-Wisconsin glaciation, and considers the moraine enclosing Naknek Lake an early-late-Wisconsin deposit correlative to either the Kvichak stade, lliamna stade, or both. The presence in the Iliamna Lake valley, and the absence in the Naknek Lake valley of a two-fold earliest-late-Wisconsin Kvichak/Iliamna glacial sequence suggest that …

Los Dos Mundos, Richard Baker Jan 1995

Los Dos Mundos, Richard Baker

Mexican Americans make up the largest minority in Idaho, yet they seemingly live in a different world from the dominant Anglo population, and because of pervasive stereotypes and exclusive policies, their participation in the community's social, economic, and political life is continually impeded.

This unique ethnographic study of a small Idaho community with a large Hispanic population examines many dimensions of the impact race relations have on everyday life for rural Mexican Americans.

Department Of Energy Programmatic Spent Nuclear Fuel Management And Idaho National Engineering Laboratory Environmental Restoration And Waste Management Programs Final Environmental Impact Statement, Volume 1, Appendix A, United States Department Of Energy

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is currently deciding the direction of its environmental restoration and waste management programs at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) for the next 10 years. Pertinent to this decision is establishing policies for the environmentally sensitive and safe transport, storage, and management of spent nuclear fuels (SNF). To develop these policies, it is necessary to revisit or examine the available options. As a part of the DOE complex, the Hanford Site not only has a large portion of the nationwide DOE-owned inventory of SNF, but also is a participant in the DOE decision for …

Lighthouse Coal Bed Methane Project Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management Jan 1995

Lighthouse Coal Bed Methane Project Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (WY)

American Oil and Gas Corporation (American), also doing business as Martens and Peck Operating, proposes a coal bed methane (CBM) project called the Lighthouse project near Gillette, Wyoming in central Campbell County just south of the Marquiss CBM project. Wells drilled in the project area would be from intermingled private, state, and federal oil and gas properties. At full production, American hopes to produce methane gas from a maximum of 200 wells completed in the Wyodak coal seam in the Lighthouse project area. Of the 200 wells, 100 would produce federally owned methane gas.

Urban Bias In Price Risk: The Geography Of Food Price Distributions In Low-Income Economies, Christopher B. Barrett Jan 1995

Urban Bias In Price Risk: The Geography Of Food Price Distributions In Low-Income Economies, Christopher B. Barrett

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The geography of agricultural marketing has important implications for the stochastic distribution of agricultural commodity prices. This paper proposes that objective food price risk differs between rural and urban areas of infrastructure-poor economies characterized by spatially concentrated patterns of foodgrains storage. This difference implies an urban bias having adverse welfare effects for peasants who seasonally switch between net food seller and net food buyer positions. Empirical analysis of rice price data from Madagascar suggests that price variability and skewness indeed differ between rural and urban areas in ways that adversely influence the relative welfare of rural peasants.
