Studies Toward The Synthesis Of A- And B- Mercapto Alanine Derivatives, And Of A,B- And B, B- Dimercapto Alanine Derivatives, Aldean James Kolar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A convenient, economical, large scale synthesis of N-acetyldehydro-alanine (a-acetamidoacrylic acid) and its methyl ester was developed via a sequence of N-chlorination-dehydrochlorination. The method was extended to the synthesis of the corresponding N-benzoyl, N-phenylacetyl and N-benzyloxycarbonyl derivatives.
The conversion of a-methoxy-N-acetyl alanine derivatives to the corresponding a-mercapto alanine derivatives, using zinc chloride and an appropriate mercaptan, was investigated. Methyl a-methoxy-N-acetyl-D, L-alaninate was successfully converted to the a-acetylthio derivative, in 24% yield; however, a 90% yield could be obtained by treatment of the dehydroalanine derivative with hydrogen chloride gas in neat thiolacetic acid.
A facile conversion of the a-acetylthio derivative to the …
Primary Prevention Of Child Abuse And Neglect: Identification Of High Risk Adolescents Prior To Parenthood, Stephen John Bavolek
Primary Prevention Of Child Abuse And Neglect: Identification Of High Risk Adolescents Prior To Parenthood, Stephen John Bavolek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of the study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument designed to assess the parenting and child rearing attitudes of adolescents, Responses to the instrument would allow for the identification of "high risk" adolescents, i.e., those adolescents whose attitudes towards parenting and child rearing indicated a high potential for child abuse.
A review of the literature identified the following four parenting constructs most commonly associated with abusive parents: Construct A: Inappropriate parental expectations of the child; Construct B: Inability of the parent to be empathically aware of the child's needs; Construct C: Strong parental belief in the …
Analysis Of Ecosystem Models, Walter Dewey Valentine
Analysis Of Ecosystem Models, Walter Dewey Valentine
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Recent attempts to apply frequency response analysis to compartmental models of ecosystems are flawed by the failure to define terms in an unambiguous and ecologically meaningful way, and by the failure to distinguish between information feedback and closed material loops. Analysis of the sensitivity of linear models to changes in the A matrix has shortcomings too: elements of the A matrix are often derived from more fundamental parameters and thus do not have a direct relationship to the parent model; only sensitivities to the fundamental parameters will be unconfounded and readily interpretable. A more serious problem with these techniques is …
Life Span Learning And Utah State University, J. Clark Ballard
Life Span Learning And Utah State University, J. Clark Ballard
Faculty Honor Lectures
The recent Kellogg Life Span Learning Grant has focused national attention on Utah State University as a model for life span learning. Historically, Extension and at least the rudiments of life span learning, have been a part of Utah State University since its founding in 1888. In 1896, the State passed the Cazier Bill which appropriated $1,500 to conduct a Farmers Institute in each county at least once a year (Ricks 1938). Such activities were mostly conducted on an informal basis until 1911 when Luther M. Winsor, Instructor of Irrigation, was employed as county agent in the Uintah Basin. This …

Things are not always as they seem. Presented here are a few examples of first impressions and possible errors in thought patterns. As an example, by some means the size of the earth is to be increased by one foot in diameter. Transcontinental Airlines and others are concerned with how much further it will be around the circumference of the earth. What is your answer? Quick! What's your answer?

Plasma Lines In The Auroral E Layer, Vincent B. Wickwar
Plasma Lines In The Auroral E Layer, Vincent B. Wickwar
All Physics Faculty Publications
The first successful measurements of plasma lines in the auroral E layer were made in January 1976 using the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar. Although they are considerably weaker than the signal from the ion component, the plasma line signals are readily detectable. Typical signal-to-noise ratios were about 4%. In this series of experiments, plasma lines were observed in the interval between 3.8 and 6.0 MHz, which corresponds to phase energies between 0.55 and 1.4 eV. They were found between 98 and 134 km; the derived plasma wave intensities varied between 0.06 and 1.0 eV, and the enhancements between 4 and …

A suite of silicic volcanic rocks is associated with the Roosevelt Hot Springs geothermal area in southwestern Utah. The volcanic sequence includes Tertiary rhyolite 8 m.y. old and obsidian, ash and rhyolite of Quaternary age. The Quaternary lavas are characterized by high silica content (76.5% SiO2) and total alkalies in excess of 9 percent. Obsidians commonly contain greater amounts of flourine than water. Two older flows (0.8 m.y.) can be distinguished from younger dome and pyroclastic material (approximately 0.5 m.y.) by subtle differences in their chemistry. The mineralogy of the rhyolites consists of alkali feldspar, plagioclase, and small amounts of …

Weight And Density Of Crowns Of Rocky Mountain Conifers, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
Relationships between live and dead crown weight and d.b.h. (ranging from 0 to 40 inches), tree height, and crown ratio are presented for 11 conifer species in the Rocky Mountains. D.b.h. was highly correlated with crown weight; however, for most species, addition of height, crown length, and especially crown ratio improved precision. Site index and stand density improved precision of estimates slightly for about one-half of the species. Crown ratio accounted for most of the differences in crown weight between dominant and intermediate crown classes. Relationships between bole weights and d.b.h. and height are presented for trees up to 4 …

The Reorganizational Problem Of The School Districts In Cache Valley, David P. Phippen Sr.
The Reorganizational Problem Of The School Districts In Cache Valley, David P. Phippen Sr.
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Some years ago, in 1972 to be exact, I was a student senator at Sky View High School. Every once in a while we would be called together to discuss issues that affected our school. One particular session dealt with school population. Six years ago we were experiencing a lot of overcrowding in the school auditorium. The authorities at that time were concerned, and were asking our opinions, as student leaders, on the issue.
During that meeting, we learned that the school district owned land above Hyrum, and eventually a high school for the south end of the valley was …
Mathematical Equations Describing Chick Performance And Carcass Composition As A Function Of Diet Protein And Energy Levels, Naiyana Nakhata
Mathematical Equations Describing Chick Performance And Carcass Composition As A Function Of Diet Protein And Energy Levels, Naiyana Nakhata
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Previous work at Utah State University determined minimum levels of different nutrients that would produce the maximum rate of gain or gain/feed ratio by feeding graded levels of the nutrients. Fitting broken lines to the data from work with one nutrient tended to underestimate the minimum requirement for that nutrient. It appeared that the response was not linear up to the level required to give maximum performance as the "broken line" approach to estimating the requirement assumes. It seemed worthwhile to try to describe the relation between ration level of a nutrient and chick performance by means of a mathematical …

The Selective Modulation Interferometric Spectrometer, Roy W. Esplin
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
This paper reviews the theory and the practical implementation of the selective modulation interferometric spectrometer (the SIMS). This spectrometer has an extremely large optical throughput, and it can scan the spectrum in real time while requiring no more signal processing than a chopped radiometer. Equations are presented which describe the relationship between design parameters and spectrometer performance. Practical design problems are identified, and some solutions to these problems are given

Introduction: The 1976 edition of "Methods of Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes" describes chemical analytical procedures to be sued in Water Quality Office (WQO) laboratoires. The methods were chose through the combined efforts of the Regional Analytical Quality Control (AQC) Coordinators, Laboratory Quality Control Officers, and other senior chemicsts in both federal and state laboratories. Method selection was based on the following criteria: 1. The method should measure the desired constitutent with precision and accuracy suffiecient to meet the data needs of WQO in the presence of the interferences normally encountered in polluted waters. 2. The procedures should utilize …

Cost Minimization For Coal Conversion Pollution Control: A Mixed Integer Programming Model, Michael F. Torpy, A. Bruce Bishop, Rangesan Narayanan
Reports
A mixed integer program was structured to identify the least cost combination of recycling and treatment alternatives that can be used to control the liquid, solid, and gas waste streams produced from a 750-megawatt coat fired steam electric power plant. The model compared methods of liquid stream recycle and waste discharge treatment to meet given air and water quality standards. The model was then used to study the effects on the optimal solution of changes in capital, operation and maintenance, and energy and water costs. In addition, the effects on optimum system design of changes in particulate and sulfur oxide …

Development Of An Erosion Model And Its Application To Phosphate Mine Dumps In Southeastern Idaho, Vinod Prabhakar, Roland W. Jeppson, Loren R. Anderson
Reports
Based on the equations of continuity and motion for sediment transport and the dynamic equation of spatially varied open channel flow, a computer simulation of erosion is developed. The water source for the erosion simulation may be rainfall or snowmelt. To provide snowmelt a computer simulation giving the rate of snowmelt from limited climatic data has been adapted to work conjunctively with the erosion model to provide a dynamic solution to erosion and overland flow, from precipitation and other limited climatic data. The computer simulation model has been tested using climatic data at and near the phosphate mine in Southeastern …

Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Consider various countries in the world. Those where the standard of living is high are where the farm sector has been sufficiently productive to release most of the manpower to the industrial and service sectors. Developing countries that include most of the people of the world are bound down to a majority of productive workers in the country producing the basic food and fiber for the rest of the country.
