Comparative Analysis Of Syntactic Abilities Of Hard-Of-Hearing And Deaf Children, As Measured By The Screening Portion Of The Test Of Syntactic Abilities, Dawn Misenhimer Apr 1993

Comparative Analysis Of Syntactic Abilities Of Hard-Of-Hearing And Deaf Children, As Measured By The Screening Portion Of The Test Of Syntactic Abilities, Dawn Misenhimer

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

According to the authors of the Test of Syntactic Abilities (TSA), the most difficult task facing deaf and hard-of-hearing children in our educational system is the acquisition of English. The structure, or syntax, of the English language, is especially challenging for these children. The eventual result is that few deaf and hard-of-hearing students acquire even an adequate knowledge of standard English. This in turn affects all other aspects of education, including the learning of reading, writing and content subjects (Quigley, Steinkamp, Power & Jones, 1978). Most deaf and hard-of-hearing children do not even use English syntax to any great extent …

Hyperplasia And Fluid Accumulation In Epithelial Cyst Formation And Growth, Andrew P. Evan, James A. Mcateer, Kenneth D. Gardner Jr. Mar 1993

Hyperplasia And Fluid Accumulation In Epithelial Cyst Formation And Growth, Andrew P. Evan, James A. Mcateer, Kenneth D. Gardner Jr.

Scanning Microscopy

Epithelial cysts may develop in virtually any epithelium. All cysts, regardless of their origins, are characterized by epithelial hyperplasia and fluid accumulation. Additional features may include tubular atrophy, basement membrane alterations and association with inflammatory cells. In spite of the intense research effort in recent years directed at uncovering the cellular mechanisms of cyst development and growth, we still do not know the primary events that lead to cyst formation. However, there are at least three candidate mechanisms. These include: 1) increased cell proliferation (epithelial hyperplasia) in the cyst wall, 2) net fluid accumulation in the cyst cavity and 3) …

Microvascular System Of The Human Fetal Inner Ear: A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study Of Corrosion Casts, A. J. Miodoński, J. Gorczyca, M. Nowogrodzka-Zagórska, J. A. Litwin, J. Składzień Mar 1993

Microvascular System Of The Human Fetal Inner Ear: A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study Of Corrosion Casts, A. J. Miodoński, J. Gorczyca, M. Nowogrodzka-Zagórska, J. A. Litwin, J. Składzień

Scanning Microscopy

The vascular system of the inner ear was investigated in 18-21 weeks old human fetuses, using the corrosion cast technique in scanning electron microscopy. At that developmental stage, vascularization of the cochlea and semicircular canals shows a pattern very similar to that described for adults. The most important differences which can be regarded as fetal features include: (1) denser limbus vessels, (2) the marginal vessels of the spiral lamina appearing as irregular network which shows a less clear arcade-like arrangement, (3) some radiating arterioles of the spiral lamina and marginal vessels possessing connections with the vascular system of the external …

Problem Analysis For The Vegetation Diversity Project, David A. Pyke, Michael M. Borman, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Management of the majority of public rangeland in the Great Basin and Columbia-Snake River Plateau falls under the authority of the Bureau of Land Management. The flora of this land ranges from highly diverse native plant communities to deteriorated lands dominated by exotic annuals. Approximately nine percent of the BLM’s 78 million acres of public land in this region is degraded to such a degree that changes in land management alone will not result in significant improvement. The BLM intends to restore native plant communities on these deteriorated lands, but current revegetation techniques used to establish introduced perennial grasses are …

Fungiform Papillae Of The Pig And The Wild Boar Analyzed By Scanning Electron Microscopy, C. A. Chamorro, P. De Paz, J. G. Fernández, L. Anel

Scanning Microscopy

Fungiform papillae of wild boar and pig were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Four regions were defined on the tongue: rostral, medial and caudal thirds and lateral sides. Morphologically the fungiform papillae correspond with their denomination. Rostral and lateral tongue regions presented the largest average number of fungiform papillae. Taste pores opened onto the upper surface of the papillae and were easily identifiable by SEM. The total number of fungiform taste pores from both animals was the highest reported in the literature. The lateral papillae of wild boar and pig contained the largest average number of pores per papilla. …

Liquid Holding Capacity And Structural Changes During Heating Of Fish Muscle: Cod (Gadus Morhua L.) And Salmon (Salmo Salar), Ragni Ofstad, Siw Kidman, Reidar Myklebust, Anne-Marie Hermansson Jan 1993

Liquid Holding Capacity And Structural Changes During Heating Of Fish Muscle: Cod (Gadus Morhua L.) And Salmon (Salmo Salar), Ragni Ofstad, Siw Kidman, Reidar Myklebust, Anne-Marie Hermansson

Food Structure

The loss of water and fat in cod and salmon muscle was studied as a function of heating temperature from 5-70 C. The liquid-holding capacity was measured by a low speed centrifugation net test leading to the separation of released liquid. To obtain a better understanding of the liquid-holding properties, the microscopic changes of the samples were evaluated by light microscopy. Two different preparation techniques were used . Cod lost twice as much water as salmon upon beating. After an initial delay , the water loss increased at 20-35°C, attained a maximum at 45-50°C, and thereafter decreased in both fish …

Canyonlands National Park And Orange Cliffs Unit Of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Environmental Assessment For Backcountry Management Plan, National Park Service Jan 1993

Canyonlands National Park And Orange Cliffs Unit Of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Environmental Assessment For Backcountry Management Plan, National Park Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Whether on foot, bicycle, horseback, or in vehicles, most visitors come to Canyonlands National Park (Canyonlands) to experience solitude or to "get away from people." Yet visitation to Canyonlands has risen exponentially over the past five years (Figures 1 and 2). Visitation is expected to continue to rise. As a function of this increase in number of visitors, adverse impacts to Canyonlands' resources have increased and the visitors' ability to find solitude has decreased. Since the mandate of the National Park Service (NPS) is to balance visitor access to the parks with preservation and protection of natural and cultural resources, …

Mineralized Matrix Synthesis By Isolated Mouse Odontoblast-Like Cells In Vitro, P. B. Andrews, A. R. Ten Cate, J. E. Davies

Cells and Materials

First mandibular molar tooth germs were dissected from 17 day mouse embryos. The dental papilla was isolated using both mechanical separation and enzymatic digestion. The cells of the papilla were then enzymatically disaggregated and cultured in 35 mm polystyrene dishes containing alpha minimum essential medium supplemented with 15 % fetal calf serum, 50 μglml ascorbic acid, 1 o-8 M dexamethasone and 10 mM Na-13-glycerophosphate. The cultures were maintained for 23 days. The cultured cells initially appeared as large flat cells having numerous cell processes. Multilayered cell nodules, distributed randomly in the cultures, were apparent after 5 days. Matrix was visible …

Ultrastructural, Cytochemical, And Immunocytochemical Studies On Bone And Its Interfaces, M. D. Mckee, A. Nanci Jan 1993

Ultrastructural, Cytochemical, And Immunocytochemical Studies On Bone And Its Interfaces, M. D. Mckee, A. Nanci

Cells and Materials

Bone cells possess the ability to synthesize, secrete and direct the assembly and maintenance of extracellular matrix to form a functionally rigid and/or weight-bearing mineralized tissue complex, the skeleton. The skeleton not only supports and protects the organs and tissues of the body, but also acts as a mineral ion reservoir for maintaining systemic calcium balance (calcium homeostasis). The remarkable biological precision necessary for the formation, turnover and constant adaptation of bone to external mechanical forces is a dynamic process requiring a coordinated cellular effort relying on a variety of cell-cell and cell-matrix/mineral interactions. Indeed, cell-matrix interfaces found in a …

Influence Of Crystal Structure On The Establishment Of The Bone-Calcium Phosphate Interface In Vitro, J. D. De Bruijn, C. P. A. T. Klein, K. De Groot, C. A. Van Blitterswijk

Cells and Materials

An in vitro rat bone marrow cell system was used to examine the interfacial ultrastructure established between various calcium phosphates and mineralized tissue. The investigated calcium phosphates comprised hydroxyapatite (HA), fluorapatite (FA), tricalcium phosphate (TCP), tetracalcium phosphate (TECP) and magnesium whitlockite (MWL). Both scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to examine the elaborated interface. The time in which a mineralized extracellular matrix was formed on the various materials differed from 2 weeks on HA, TCP and TECP, to 8 weeks on FA. It was only occasionally observed in some areas on MWL, which might have been due to aluminum …

Osteoclastic Resorption Of Calcium Phosphate Ceramic Thin Films, J. E. Davies, G. Shapiro, B. F. Lowenberg Jan 1993

Osteoclastic Resorption Of Calcium Phosphate Ceramic Thin Films, J. E. Davies, G. Shapiro, B. F. Lowenberg

Cells and Materials

Sub-micron calcium phosphate ceramic thin films were formed by vertically dipping transparent quartz plates in a particulate sol-gel suspension. Primary adult rat bone marrow cell populations were cultured on the ceramic thin films in conditions known to allow the differentiation of cells of the osteoclast lineage. Monitoring the cultures for periods of 11 to 28 days revealed the creation of resorption lacunae in the thin films by multinucleate cells. Some cultures were heated at 42 °C overnight to remove adherent cells; using bright field light microscopy (LM), after staining with silver nitrate, the degree of resorption could be easily assessed. …

Feeder Cattle Buyer Market Areas And The Price Impact Of Buyer Concentration, Deevon Bailey, B. Wade Brorsen, Michael R. Thomsen Jan 1993

Feeder Cattle Buyer Market Areas And The Price Impact Of Buyer Concentration, Deevon Bailey, B. Wade Brorsen, Michael R. Thomsen

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The size and shape of market areas for buyers in the Dodge City, Amarillo, Omaha, and Greeley feeding sites are determined by plotting data from the nation's largest video auction. Buying areas for feeder cattle are large, irregularly shaped, and, in some cases, truncated. Feeder cattle buyers behave as oligopsonists in counties where most buyers are from one feeding site. Prices are higher for feeder cattle in counties where two or more market areas overlap.

Computation Of Scanning Tunneling Microscope Images Of Nanometer-Sized Objects Physisorbed On Metal Surfaces, J. P. Vigneron, I. Derycke, Th. Laloyaux, Ph. Lambin, A. A. Lucas Jan 1993

Computation Of Scanning Tunneling Microscope Images Of Nanometer-Sized Objects Physisorbed On Metal Surfaces, J. P. Vigneron, I. Derycke, Th. Laloyaux, Ph. Lambin, A. A. Lucas

Scanning Microscopy

This communication deals with the application of a transfer-matrix strategy for the quantitative evaluation of the tunnel current in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The image given by a simple atomic-size object deposited on a metal surface is specifically examined in both modes of STM operation namely the constant-height and the constant-current modes. The two-dimensional corrugation induced at low temperature by Xe atoms physisorbed on an otherwise clean, unreconstructed Ni (110) surface is studied in detail. It is shown that the simple consideration of the elastic scattering of electrons by the three-dimensional potential barrier between the tip and the metal …

A Complexity Analysis Of Smart Pixel Switching Nodes For Photonic Extended Generalized Shuffle Switching Networks, Thomas J. Cloonan, Gaylord W. Richards, Anthony L. Lentine, Frederick B. Mccormick, Harvard Scott Hinton, Stephen J. Hinterlong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper studies the architectural tradeoffs found in the use of smart pixels for nodes within photonic switching interconnection networks are discussed. The particular networks of interest within the analysis are strictly nonblocking extended generalized shuffle (EGS) networks. Several performance metrics are defined for the analysis, and the effect of node size on these metrics is studied. Optimum node sizes are defined for each of the performance metrics and system-level limitations are identified.

Snapshot In Time, Repeat Photography On The Boise National Forest 1870-1992, United States Department Of Agriculture

Forestry

A forest health crisis of unprecedented proportions faced the Boise National Forest in the early years of the 1990's. Six years of drought set the stage for catastrophic outbreaks of insect and disease in the various tree communities of the forest, and wildfires burned hotter and more frequently than at any time in the past. In our often desperate search for ways to moderate the crisis, we turned to the notion of repeat photography to try to understand what happened in the past and how things are different now. We hoped to find some clues that would help shape management …

Tournament-Style Debate As A Natural Resources Education Technique, Matthew S. Carroll, F. J. Alt, A. M. Brandenburg, W. Schlosser, Steven E. Daniels

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Curricula in the natural resource professions are placing increased emphasis on course work dealing with the larger philosophical and value-related questions surrounding resource management. This development presents a challenge to instructors, particularly in terms of encouraging active student involvement in such courses. The use of tournament debate format provides one useful means for fostering such involvement while also aiding in the development of oral communication skills. The authors' experience with the use of debate suggests that certain modifications to traditional debate format aid in its successful classroom use.

Multiple Quantum-Well Technology Takes Seed, Harvard S. Hinton Jan 1993

Multiple Quantum-Well Technology Takes Seed, Harvard S. Hinton

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Progress in the development of self-electrooptic-effect devices (SEEDs) is discussed. The devices include the resistor-SEED (R-SEED) device, which can be viewed as a simple NOR gate. The symmetric SEED (S-SEED) and the logic-SEED (L-SEED) devices with improved features, functionality, and performance are also considered. The integration of FETs with multiple quantum well (MQW) modulators (FET-SEED), enables optical interconnections of electronic circuits. Where the SEED technology can be used is discussed, and an experimental optical switching fabric made using these devices is described.

Microstructure And Rheological Properties Of Composites Of Potato Starch Granules And Amylose: A Comparison Of Observed And Predicted Structures, K. Svegmark, A.-M. Hermansson Jan 1993

Microstructure And Rheological Properties Of Composites Of Potato Starch Granules And Amylose: A Comparison Of Observed And Predicted Structures, K. Svegmark, A.-M. Hermansson

Food Structure

Potato starch granules were gelatinised in amylose solution to study the effect of adding amylose to a highswelling granular starch system. The effects of varying the amount of potato starch from 1-10% , added to a solution of 2% amylose, were studied by means of dynamic viscoelastic measurements and light microscopy.

The granules gelatinised in amylose solution had a lower degree of swelling than those gelatinised in water. The restricted swelling in amylose was reflected in a decrease in the complex shear modulus (G*) at 75'C. GeJatinisation in 2% amylopectin also caused a decrease in G*, but gelatinisation in 2% …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Osteoclast-Bone Interface In Vivo, H. Zhou, R. Chernecky, J. E. Davies Jan 1993

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Osteoclast-Bone Interface In Vivo, H. Zhou, R. Chernecky, J. E. Davies

Cells and Materials

Rat femoral bones were studied by scanning electron microscopy to demonstrate the morphology of osteoclast- bone matrix interfacial relationships. Two general morphological types of actively resorbing osteoclasts were observed . One cell type was approximately ovoid with highly fimbriated borders, fully attached and closely adapted to the resorption surface. The ruffled border of such cells was composed of a number of individual filopodia which were of uniform , regular shape and approximately 2-3 μm in length and 150 nm in diameter. They were found to penetrate the bone matrix to a depth of 1 μm and interdigitated with the surrounding …

Analysis Of The Bony Interface With Various Types Of Hydroxyapatite In Vitro, J. D. De Bruijn, J. S. Flach, K. De Groot, C. A. Van Blitterswijk, J. E. Davies

Cells and Materials

Rat bone marrow cells, capable of forming bonelike tissue, were cultured on three types of plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite that differed in degree of crystallinity from 15%, 43% to 69%. The interface between the mineralized extracellular matrix and the hydroxyapatite was studied with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. At the onset of bone formation, calcium and phosphorous-rich afibrillar globules, with a diameter varying from 0.2 to 0.8 μm, were produced and deposited onto the different substrata. These globules subsequently fused to form a homogeneous layer to which collagen fibres became anchored. Individual globules could be distinguished on the non-degrading 69 % …

A Time-Dependent Model Of Polar Cap Arcs, Lie Zhu, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, D. J. Crain

All Physics Faculty Publications

A two-dimensional time-dependent model of polar cap arcs has been developed. The electrodynamics of the polar cap arcs are treated self-consistently in the frame of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. The focus of this paper is to introduce the physics and mathematical formulation of the model and describe the features of the spatial structure and temporal evolution of the polar cap arcs. The modeling results indicate that the time constant for the formation of the polar cap arcs is around 10 min. It is found that an initial single-arc precipitation pattern associated with a polar cap arc tends to split into …
