Social Organization And Decision Making In North American Bison: Implications For Management, Ryan A. Shaw
Social Organization And Decision Making In North American Bison: Implications For Management, Ryan A. Shaw
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Social organization varies widely among herbivores, and the level of social organization in bison is widely debated. I hypothesized that when mother-daughter relationships are allowed to develop, bison form long-term associations. In my study, 25 treatment mothers were selected from a free-ranging herd and kept together with their calves, while 25 control females had their calves forcefully removed. Treatment mothers and offspring had by far the greatest number of associations with a greater percentage of individuals with a half weight index (HWI) > 0.50. The strongest associations (HWI > 0.31) were among treatment mothers and their offspring. Moreover, these associations persisted over …
Influences Of Disclosure Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Michelle Jones
Influences Of Disclosure Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Michelle Jones
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Child forensic interviews are essential in eliciting disclosures in child abuse cases. Due to the nature of abuse and the child victims, barriers are inevitable to obtaining a full disclosure. This research describes the barriers as well as the factors that increase the likelihood of eliciting a disclosure during child forensic interviews. Previous research has found that factors more likely to induce a disclosure are having a supportive primary caregiver, an investigation which was instigated by the child victim, and if the victim is an older female. Barriers preventing disclosure include threats made by the perpetrator, fear, lack of opportunity …
Military As Welfare State: Conditions Leading To The Adoption Of The National Guard Youth Challenge Program, Madisen B. Drury
Military As Welfare State: Conditions Leading To The Adoption Of The National Guard Youth Challenge Program, Madisen B. Drury
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Since its inception in 1993, nearly 90,000 high school dropouts have completed the National Guard Youth Challenge Program, a youth diversion program for unemployed high school dropouts. As of 2008, 27 states have partnered with the military to implement this residential program for at-risk youth. There is limited research on this new social welfare program despite its representing a dynamic military-state-welfare relationship. This study examines state-level conditions and looks to answer three research questions: 1) Under what conditions do states start a ChalleNGe program?; 2) What role do time-varying social and economic factors have in influencing states to initially adopt …
A Demographic Evaluation Of Increasing Rates Of Suicide Mortality In Japan And South Korea, Sun Young Jeon
A Demographic Evaluation Of Increasing Rates Of Suicide Mortality In Japan And South Korea, Sun Young Jeon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
According to a World Health Organization report, about one million people die by suicide each year. Fortunately, rates of suicide mortality have been decreasing
among most of the OECD countries, but Japan and South Korea are the only two exceptions to this trend, which has shown increasing suicide rates over the last 25
years. A number of studies have focused on psychological motives and individual-level causes of suicide, such as depression, mental disorder, and disability. However,
as Durkheim pointed out, suicide in a society does not have any obvious relationship to the prevalence of mental disorder. With his theory indicating …
Saucers And The Sacred: The Folklore Of Ufo Narratives, Preston C. Copeland
Saucers And The Sacred: The Folklore Of Ufo Narratives, Preston C. Copeland
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In 1973, nineteen year old Calvin Parker and forty two year old Charles Hickson, both of Gauter, Mississippi were fishing in the Pascagoula river when they heard a buzzing noise behind them. Both turned and were terrified to see a ten-foot wide, eight-foot- high, glowing egg-shaped object with blue lights at its front hovering just above the ground about forty feet from the riverbank. As the men, frozen with fright, watched, a door appeared in the object, and three strange Beings floated just above the river toward them. The beings had legs but did not use them. They were about …
Ethnic Disparities In Prenatal Care Utilization In Vietnam, Ha Ngoc Trinh
Ethnic Disparities In Prenatal Care Utilization In Vietnam, Ha Ngoc Trinh
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Prenatal care is credited with reducing neonatal, perinatal, and maternal mortality and morbidity. The main purpose of the thesis is to examine the ethnic disparities between majority and ethnic minority women in prenatal care usage. The thesis also analyzes the effects of age, education attainment, female employment, and region on prenatal care utilization in Vietnam. I employ the Demographic and Health Survey 2002 in Vietnam. Descriptive statistic and logistic regression are the two statistical tests employed in this research. Results exhibit evidence of ethnic disparities in type of prenatal care utilization. Although ethnic minority women are likely to enter prenatal …
Where's The Justice? A Review Of The Local Food Movement Through A Reflexive Lens, Colyn Kilmer
Where's The Justice? A Review Of The Local Food Movement Through A Reflexive Lens, Colyn Kilmer
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
As the local food movement has gained momentum over the past several years, so too has it garnered critiques from academic scholars. This literature review identified academic critiques of the local food movement. These critiques were organized into four general categories. A fifth category, reflexivity, was identified, which functioned as both a critique and a way to address the other four categories of critique. This review paired the four categories of academic critique with ways in which several academic scholars suggested reflexivity could be used to resolve these critiques. This review was designed to give scholars, practitioners, and consumers associated …

Breathe In, Breathe Out: Utilizing Mindfulness In The Social Work Practicum, Allison Leigh Leonard
Breathe In, Breathe Out: Utilizing Mindfulness In The Social Work Practicum, Allison Leigh Leonard
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Mindfulness is defined as the ability to be aware of your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and actions – in the present moment – without judging or criticizing yourself or your experience (McKay, Wood, & Brantley, 2007). It has been used in a variety of settings and in a variety of ways. Within the context of social work, mindfulness can be used to prevent burnout and increase awareness. This paper reports research on teaching mindfulness techniques with the purpose of training students to use mindfulness and improve their professional development. Specifically, the paper presents the following: review of current literature on …

From Either/Or To Both/And: Between The Traditional And The Modern, Sam Pack
From Either/Or To Both/And: Between The Traditional And The Modern, Sam Pack
Journal of Indigenous Research
For native populations colonized and forcibly assimilated into the mainstream, the transformation is never complete because they remain trapped in perpetual liminality between the traditional and the modern. The resulting toll in human suffering and degradation has become commonplace, as attested by the high rates of alcoholism and violence on American Indian reservations. Yet Indians have still managed to survive, often by using their brand of humor as a weapon. Increasingly, younger generations of Native Americans are finding that it is possible to balance acculturation with cultural preservation. Navajos, in particular, have been credited with a unique ability to selectively …

Fighting A Different Battle: Challenges Facing American Indians In Higher Education, Charles F. Harrington, Billie G. Harrington
Fighting A Different Battle: Challenges Facing American Indians In Higher Education, Charles F. Harrington, Billie G. Harrington
Journal of Indigenous Research
Educational access and attainment are among the most pressing issues facing Indian Country. Of particular challenge are those of post secondary education. American Indian students are retained and graduated from colleges at rates far below their non-Native peers. Making a successful adjustment to college is a formidable challenge for many people. It is particularly challenging for American Indian students. The authors provide recommendations for increasing the number of proportions of American Indian students who enter, and graduate from, college.
