Reducing Rodenticide Hazards: Urban/Suburban Settings, Frank Meek
Reducing Rodenticide Hazards: Urban/Suburban Settings, Frank Meek
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Depending on the part of the United States, the pest service professional could be fighting several different species of rats and mice. In many situations the service professional may find not just one, but multiple species cohabitating. In the urban/suburban setting there are three primary hazards that must be taken into account prior to placing any rodenticide out for controlling rodents: primary non-target exposure; secondary non-target exposure; and secondary pest infestations from rodenticide placements. Reduction of hazard is based on proper identification of the target so that the correct treatment can be implemented to achieve the fastest results while reducing …

Management Strategies For Addressing Wildlife Disease Transmission: The Case For Fertility Control, Gary Killian, Kathleen Fagerstone, Terry Kreeger, Lowell Miller, Jack Rhyan
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Transmissible diseases among wildlife species, and between wildlife and domestic livestock, are a matter of increasing concern. A combination of approaches should be considered for controlling disease transmission. If a vaccine is available or can economically be developed for the disease, it should be used as the primary component of the disease management strategy. For example, development of an oral rabies vaccine has led to programs where baits are dispersed on a large scale in a barrier zone to prevent the spread of rabies. However, there are no vaccines available for many diseases and incentives are frequently not present for …

Cowbird Control: Management Issues, Controversies And Perceptions, And The Future, Scott G. Summers, Richard M. Kostecke, Garrett L. Norman
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Brood-parasitic brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) have been implicated as a cause of songbird population declines. Cowbirds can have particularly severe negative impacts on already endangered hosts. Removal of cowbirds by trapping has become a popular management action to benefit hosts. Cowbird trapping often decreases parasitism frequency and can help to increase the reproductive success of hosts. However, its role in the recovery of host populations is equivocal. Based on our experience at Fort Hood Military Reservation, Texas, the site of a long-term, landscape-scale trapping program, we discuss factors that we believe are important for the success of a trapping …

While many studies have examined the barrier effects of large rivers on animal dispersal and gene flow, few studies have considered the barrier effects of small streams. We used displacement experiments and analyses of genetic population structure to examine the effects of first-order and second-order streams on the dispersal of terrestrial red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus (Green, 1818). We marked red-backed salamanders from near the edges of one first-order stream and one second-order stream, and experimentally displaced them either across the stream or an equal distance farther into the forest. A comparison of return rates indicated that both streams were partial …

Lake Mead Complex Final Gather Plan: Environmental Assessment, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
This Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Las Vegas Field Office (LVFO) to analyze the environmental effects of a gather to remove approximately 195 resident wild burros from National Park Service-administered lands adjacent to the El Dorado Mountains, Gold Butte and Muddy Mountains Herd Management Areas (HMAs) within the Lake Mead Complex (LMC) in March 2007. The LMC is located in southern Nevada in Clark County. The BLM Las Vegas Field Office and National Park Service coordinate management activities for wild burros on these public lands within their individual administrative responsibilities through a …

Playing With Daddy: Social Toy Play, Early Head Start, And Developmental Outcomes, Lori A. Roggman, Lisa Bouye, G. A. Cook, K. Christiansen, D. Jones
Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications
Research on fathers in Early Head Start (EHS) has provided an opportunity to study fathers from low-income families. We examined father-toddler social toy play in relation to EHS enrollment, fathers' psychosocial well-being, and children's developmental outcomes in a sample of 74 father-toddler dyads. Overall, our results show that father-toddler social toy play was more complex among fathers in an EHS program than among those in a comparison group. Greater complexity in father-toddler social toy play predicted better cognitive and social developmental outcomes for young children, especially in the program group, but it was limited by fathers' psychosocial well-being in the …

Chemical And Dynamical Processes In The Mesospheric Emissive Layer. First Results Of Stereoscopic Observations, M. Faivre, G. Moreels, Pierre-Dominique Pautet, J. Clairemidi, F. Dumont, O. Lorin, F. Colas

[1] The mesospheric emissive layer is an efficient tracer of the dynamical processes propagating in the atmosphere at that level. CCD images in the near infrared taken from the ground at slant angles often reveal the existence of wavy fields. A series of such images has been transformed, using matrix operations, producing a downward satellite-type view that covers a circular area of radius ∼1000 km at the altitude of the layer. The Fourier characteristics of the wave system are measured using a Morlet-type wavelet generator function with horizontal wavelengths of mostly ∼20–40 km and 100–150 km and temporal periods of …

The Seventh International Conference on the Genetics of Streptococci, Lactococci, and Enterococci, sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology, was held 18 to 21 June 2006, overlooking the sea in Saint Malo, Bretagne, France. The conference began in 1981 as the Streptococcal Genetics meeting, at a time when the genera Enterococcus and Lactococcus were still classified as Streptococcus spp. Through the years, this meeting has served as a quadrennial platform to showcase cutting-edge advances in the dissection of the underlying genetics of growth control, metabolism, extrachromosomal elements, substrate utilization, competence development, antibiotic resistance, and virulence of this fascinating group of …

With 2005 retail sales close to $4.8 million, cultured dairy products are driving the growth of dairy foods consumption. Starter cultures are of great industrial significance in that they play a vital role in the manufacturing, flavor, and texture development of fermented dairy foods. Furthermore, additional interest in starter bacteria has been generated because of the data accumulating on the potential health benefits of these organisms. Today, starter cultures for fermented foods are developed mainly by design rather than by the traditional screening methods and trial and error. Advances in genetics and molecular biology have provided opportunities for genomic studies …

Aspen Indicator Species In Lichen Communities In The Bear River Range Of Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers, Roger Rosentreter, Ronald J. Ryel
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Aspen are thought to be declining in this region due to a combination of fire suppression, grazing and wildlife management practices, and potentially cool/wet climates of the past century which favor advancing conifer succession. Many scientists are concerned that aspen’s related species may also be losing habitat, thereby threatening the long-term local and regional viability of this important community. To date, few studies have specifically examined the role of aspen’s epiphytic lichen community. This paper presents basic community research describing the application of Indicator Species Analysis for lichens growing on aspen stems in the central Rocky Mountains of North American. …

Utah Prairie Dog Habitat Evaluation Guide, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Environmental Defense
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The Utah prairie dog (Cynomys parvidens) (UPD) is listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and exists only in southwestern Utah. UPD numbers and range have declined dramatically since settlement of Utah because of conversion of rangeland to cropland, urban development, fire suppression, improper grazing, drought, and introduced sylvatic plague (Yersina pestis). As of this writing, approximately 75% of all Utah prairie dogs inhabit private lands. This fact highlights the need to encourage farmers and ranchers to manage UPD habitat on their property in order to move the species closer to recovery. This guide provides technical …
