Does The Market Matter For More Than Investment?, Yiwei Zhang
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Does the market matter for more than investment? by Jason Smith examines how themultiple effects of the market (through stock prices) can affect a corporation. The mainfindings are that low stock prices precede lower costs and lower investments. The maininnovation of this work is showing that the market can matter for more than a simpleinvestment. Low stock prices imply that the market may disagree with investment and leadthe manager to reduce costs. This result does not appear to be driven by financial constraints.

Computer games have a diverse range of genres and implementations. Many of the most popular computer games consist of time-killing puzzles targeted at mobile devices. Each game has a well-dened challenge that a user must solve in order to progress.
The goal of this project is to investigate and implement a new obstacle for use in computer games, namely optical illusions. One illusion in particular, the Fraser spiral, was especially considered. Before this project, no other computer game integrating this optical illusion has been attempted.
Included in this report is an overview of the design, implementation and testing involved in …
Modeling Of Mating Encounters: The Classical Mass Action Paradigm And An Application To Pest Control, Katherine R. Snyder
Modeling Of Mating Encounters: The Classical Mass Action Paradigm And An Application To Pest Control, Katherine R. Snyder
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The growth of a two-sex population is undoubtedly dependent upon the dynamics of its mating encounter rates. Encounter rates are influenced by several factors that affect the modeling of a population. In this work we first look at the law of mass action as applied to mating encounter rates. We review the underlying assumptions of mass action and present a derivation using dimensional reduction and simulated data. This approach led to a revised proportionality constant that seems to produce results in better accord to experimental data than does the original constant. We also explore numerically how random fluctuations on the …

I realize, with some trepidation, that I have been doing theatre for most of my life. I have struggled, been successful, lost sleep, cried, given up, left and yet I always find my way back. I have a love/hate relationship with the theatre. But at the end of the day I have never felt more connection, love, compassion, fulfillment, and satisfaction from any other endeavor than I do from creating theatre. I truly believe that theatre is the embodiment of the human condition. It isn’t just an art form, it is the art form. It is all the art forms …

Assimilationist Language In Cherokee Women's Petitions: A Political Call To Reclaim Traditional Cherokee Culture, Jillian Moore Bennion
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Twenty-one years before the forced-removal of Cherokee people from their native lands east of the Mississippi, Cherokee people fought peacefully to maintain ownership of Cherokee-owned lands and attempted to preserve, at least in part, traditional Cherokee culture. Through the drafting of petitions, specifically written between 1817-19, Cherokee women pushed back against pressure to assimilate to Anglo-American culture and to cede Cherokee land to the United States Government. The five petitions that are present in this analysis were drafted in response to an ongoing Cherokee- United States land crisis.
This article looks at petitions written by female Cherokee and male Cherokee …

The purpose of this study is to determine the potential microalgae have for being a heavy metal remediation tool. Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements that can be found inside the earth or on its surface. Typically, heavy metals are found naturally at low concentrations. However, through human activities, heavy metals are continually making their way to the surface and being concentrated. This happens largely through mining and manufacturing operations. For example, NiCd batteries produce waste containing nickel and cadmium, and paper manufacturing produces waste containing high levels of lead. As underdeveloped nations continue to industrialize and the world population …
The Impact Of Social Comparisons On Stereotype Threat For Black College Students Attending Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Odessia Knowles
The Impact Of Social Comparisons On Stereotype Threat For Black College Students Attending Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Odessia Knowles
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Despite increasing college enrollment rates for Black individuals, college completion rates remain dismal, thus the achievement gap between Black and White students remains in effect. One reason which may contribute to low completion rates for Black college students is stereotype threat. Stereotype threat is when an individual is at risk of confirming a negative stereotype about their group membership. For Blacks attending college, the threat would be related to academic underachievement. However, the impact of stereotype threat is highly individualized and an individual’s Black racial identity may impact stereotype threat for certain individuals.
Social comparison theory suggests that to gain …

Children with autism often display repetitive, stereotypical movements with toys in lieu of appropriate play skills. Unlike typically developing children, they do not vary their play with toys. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether three preschoolers with autism would vary their play actions when exposed to a lag schedule of reinforcement and physical prompting procedure. All three participants demonstrated varied play actions with the lag schedule and prompting procedure in place. These behaviors maintained when a probe was conducted two weeks later in the absence of the lag schedule. Although responding was high in the 2-week …
Effects Of Environmental Water Rights Purchases On Dissolved Oxygen, Stream Temperature, And Fish Habitat, Nathaniel R. Mouzon
Effects Of Environmental Water Rights Purchases On Dissolved Oxygen, Stream Temperature, And Fish Habitat, Nathaniel R. Mouzon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Degraded water quality has reduced aquatic species abundance and survivability in Nevada’s Walker River. Low instream flows and increased nutrients affect native fish populations through high daily stream temperatures and low nightly dissolved oxygen concentrations. Increasing streamflow, through environmental water purchases, may improve water quality and enhance habitat for native fish species, such as Lahontan cutthroat trout. This study uses River Modeling System, a computer model, to estimate streamflows, stream temperatures, and dissolved oxygen concentrations in the Walker River. Streamflow increases are simulated to determine potential improvements to high water temperatures and low dissolved oxygen concentrations, enabling the prioritization of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is a major public health concern worldwide. It has been theorized that diets rich in fruits and vegetables may be protective against the development of cardiovascular disease mainly through their high content of flavonoids. Flavonoids were thought to influence traditional risk factors of cardiovascular disease such as blood pressure, lipid profile, and systemic inflammation. Recent clinical studies have shown that this may not be the case. The production of trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) by the gut microbiota from dietary sources of choline has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. The objectives of this …

Stable Isotopes And The Ecology And Physiology Of Reptiles, Andrew M. Durso
Stable Isotopes And The Ecology And Physiology Of Reptiles, Andrew M. Durso
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
When animals don’t have enough food, they have to “choose” between “spending” their limited energy on themselves or on their offspring. Biologists think that reptiles can make this choice quickly in response to different environments. But, it can be hard to study these choices because it is hard to convert between, for example, the number of eggs laid and the speed of healing a wound. By using stable isotope chemistry, we can collect more detailed and comparable information about how lizards and other animals spend their limited resources than with any other method. For example, lizards in the wild have …
Agricultural Nitrogen Management Affects Microbial Communities, Enzyme Activities, And Functional Genes For Nitrification And Nitrogen Mineralization, Yang Ouyang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Improved understanding of nitrogen cycling in agriculture is essential for increasing fertilizer use efficiency and sustainable food production. The availability and mobility of nitrogen are largely determined by the processes of nitrogen mineralization and nitrification. Nitrification is mediated by ammonia oxidizing bacteria, ammonia oxidizing archaea, and nitrite oxidizing bacteria. Our understanding of the controls on the relative activity of these nitrifying organisms in soil is limited. A wide variety of soil microorganisms produce enzymes that mineralize nitrogen from organic matter, but we have limited knowledge about links between enzyme activity and the microbes that work in soil. The main objective …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
We live in a century in which technology has become part of our lives, and it is crucial that we become active creators and not merely passive users of technology. One characteristic that might distinguish someone who uses the ideas of others from one who innovates his own ideas is the ability to computer program. Computer programming is more than just learning how to code; it also exposes students to computational thinking (CT), which involves problem-solving using computer science (CS) concepts, such as decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design.
The rationale for introducing computing in K-12 in order to …
