The Life History And Control Of Sheep Tick, Melophagus Ovinus (Linn.), In Northern Utah, Ted Tibbetts
The Life History And Control Of Sheep Tick, Melophagus Ovinus (Linn.), In Northern Utah, Ted Tibbetts
Biology
The sheep tick, Melophagus ovinus (Linn.), is a serious ectoparasite of sheep in the sheep raising areas of Utah. Unless a more effective method of control is developed, this insect pest will continue to cause appreciable losses to the producer. Sheep ticks feed upon the blood of their hosts causing great irritation and discomfort and reduced vitality. Sheep are often so annoyed by this pest that they refuse to eat normally. This results in retardaton of growth and impairment of the best health and condition for tick-infested sheep. The sheep tick is suspected of transmitting the disease organisms, Rickettsia melophaga …

Factors Influencing The Validity Of Pheasant Census Methods, Sevier County, Utah, Eldon H. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The measurement of animal populations is a most important phase of wildlife management. The initiation of systematic management of any unit of specific game habitat usually involves the measurement of the stock on hand as a primary step. In practice game inventory performs a twofold function; namely, as a medium determining the efficacy of past management practices as a basis for future manipulations and as an aid in the establishment of game protective or removal policies.
A census, in the sense applied in this study, is best defined as the enumeration of a population on a given area at a …
Utilization Of Forage Plants And Diet Of Sheep On Utah Winter Range, Lisle R. Green
Utilization Of Forage Plants And Diet Of Sheep On Utah Winter Range, Lisle R. Green
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Although there is an abundance of material available concerning forage consumption by livestock on pasture land and in the feed lot, there is relatively little known about the grazing habits and forage preferences of livestock under range conditions. There has been still less scientific effort expended toward solving the riddle of the grazing animal's diet under winter range conditions. Investigators have suggested means to determine the quantity of forage available on range areas, the carrying capacities of range lands, and methods of determining the degree to which forage has been utilized. The diet of the foraging animal is affected by …

A Curriculum Study Of The Biological Science Courses In The Secondary Schools And College Of Utah During 1947-48, Merrill H. Gunnell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
At the present time there is a feeling among biologists in Utah that there should be improvement in biological science courses and course sequence to better fill the needs of the non technical student. There are many students filling group requirements with an accumulation of courses which may not provide them with the more important fundamental concepts and principles in biology. Information concerning these courses in high schools and colleges in necessary to provide a basis for curriculum revision in the field. Such information should be useful in evaluating the present system and suggesting modifications. Because of the need for …

Processing, Grading And Sale Of Utah Turkeys, 1947-48, Paul R. Grimshaw
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Turkey production in Utah is one of the most important farm enterprises of the state. In 1945, 11.5 percent of the total farm cash income of the state was from the turkey enterprise. In 1946, 9.4 percent came from this source. Turkey production made up 8.9 percent of the total cash income from farm enterprises in 1944; 5.8 percent in 1945; 4.9 percent in 1940; 1.7 percent in 1935; and 1.3 percent in 1930. The objectives of this study were: (1) to ascertain charges for processing and hauling turkeys from the farm to the processing plants; (2) to determine the …

The Effect Of Ddt Residue On The Composition And Digestibility Of Alfalfa Hay, Than Myint
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
DDT (2,2 bis (p-chlorophenyl) 1,1,1-trichloroethane) was first synthesized in 1874 by Seidler in Switzerland, however, its effectiveness as an insecticide was not known until about 1942. The active principle was first known as G.H.B. (Gesarol-Neccid Base): but in 1943 DDT was suggested as an abbreviation for Dichlore Diphenyl Trichloroethane (Kaaegie, 1946). In fact DDT, as a powerful insecticide is one of the developments made during World War II. The importance of DDT in the control of the common insect enemies of mankind, such as mosquitoes, flies, moths, and many agricultural insect pests is realized more day by day. Many studies …
Geological Studies In Utah, J. Stewart Williams
Geological Studies In Utah, J. Stewart Williams
Faculty Honor Lectures
Utah's thousands of square miles of mountains, plateaus, and i ~ desert basins exhibit a wide variety of geological features and offer the student of geology an endless series of challenging problems. The solution of some of these problems began nearly one hundred years ago with the surveys of the United States territories; the work continues today at a greatly accelerated rate with scores of professional geologists and advanced students in the field each summer. The writer and students under his direction have made some contributions to the solution of a few of these problems in the twelve years that …

Possibilities Of Managing Aspen, Paul Zehngraff
Possibilities Of Managing Aspen, Paul Zehngraff
Aspen Bibliography
The management of aspen or popple (Populus tremuloides) has received little attention in the past, largely because of the former abundant supply of other and more valuable tree species in the Lake States. Be- cause of a rapidly expanding market for all forest products during the past decade, particularly during the war, the attention and ingenuity of industry have turned toward the use of aspen. As a consequence, aspen has now become one of the important pulpwood species in the Lake States, and is used for many other products. That it will retain its place for some time to come …

A Study Of A Heron Nesting Colony, Linden J. Leatham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Herons are well known because of their gregarious nesting habits. Like many others of the lower orders of birds they nest together in pure or mixed colonies of many different combinations and under diverse living conditions. The population of different colonies may vary from a few pairs to many thousands of pairs depending upon the nature and extent of the breeding area, the food supply available and the protection afforded either by natural or artificial means.
In Utah and adjacent areas of bordering states, many types of heron associations have been studied and reported by ornithological workers. Breeding colonies of …

A Farm Management Study Of Dairy Farms In Duchesne County, Utah, 1945, Melvin M. Peterson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The kinds of agricultural commodities grown in an area result largely from the physical, economic, and institutional setting of the area. Seldom does one factor alone determine the kind of production. The nature of the soil, the amount and the distribution of the precipitation, the topography of the area, and the length of the frost-free growing period are all important. Likewise, location with respect to markets and means of transportation is important, as are also the ownership of the land, the size of the farms, and the balance among the factors of production.
In Duchesne County the physical factors, location, …
Variable Factors In The Determination Of Fat And Moisture In Cheddar Cheese, William C. Winder
Variable Factors In The Determination Of Fat And Moisture In Cheddar Cheese, William C. Winder
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The rapid growth of the dairy industry which began in the latter half of the nineteenth century necessitated the development of chemical tests for determining the composition of dairy products. Chemists devoted much study and labor in devising methods which would be both accurate and rapid. As a result of these researches a large number of tests were developed. Many of the methods possessed considerable merit and a few were so satisfactory that the rest did not come into general use. The basic principles of all the tests now in use were discovered between 1880 and 1890.
The Future Of Utah's Agriculture, W. Preston Thomas
The Future Of Utah's Agriculture, W. Preston Thomas
Faculty Honor Lectures
Since the settlement of the state Utah's agriculture has been based primarily on irrigated farming. The major part of farm income and the livelihood of farmers and farm families comes from this type of farming. Also, Utah's hopes for agricultural expansion and development, the adding of new wealth, and the providing of employment for Utah rural people, lie in a further development of irrigation and irrigated farming. Range livestock and dry farming, when measured by income and employment of labor have been, and are likely to remain, minor enterprises when compared to irrigated farming. In this discussion of Utah's agriculture …

Bulletin No. 327 - Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Biennial Report, 1944-1946, R. H. Walker
UAES Bulletins
During the past biennium there has been a general expansion in the research program of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. Although some of the investigations were curtailed by lack of personnel and equipment and the pressure of wartime assignments, many of the staff were able to devote more time to research because of a lessening of the teaching load at the College. The emergency caused a re-examination of the research program, old projects, no longer urgent were weeded out, others were revised to meet the needs of the changing times, and many new projects were initiated to extend the research …
