Fremont And His Explorations In Utah, Joel E. Ricks

Joel Ricks Collection

John Charles Fremont, explorer, soldier and aspirant to the Presidency of the United States, was born January 21, 1813, in Savannah Georgia. Fremont's great contribution to western expansion did not consist of exploration so much as a scientific mapping of the country.

Aspen For Excelsior, Hereford Garland Jun 1949

Aspen For Excelsior, Hereford Garland

Aspen Bibliography

The use of aspen for the manufacture of excelsior is well established in the Lake States. The properties of the wood make it suitable for this general use, and there are adequate supplies available for increased productive capacity. The process of manufacturing excelsior is relatively uncomplicated, and the production equipment is simple and relatively low in cost. That the industry is not more extensive is obviously due to limitations in markets for excelsior. Expansion of the industry depends primarily upon the development of new uses and new products having excelsior as a base.

Alfalfa As A Source Of Carotene In The Diet Of Chicks, James Joseph O'Toole May 1949

Alfalfa As A Source Of Carotene In The Diet Of Chicks, James Joseph O'Toole

Biology

The value of carotene as a precursor of vitamin A in the animal body was shown conclusively by the work of Moore (20). Rats which had been depleted of vitamin A and fed carotene following the depletion period, showed vitamin A absorption maxima in liver tissue when assayed spectrophotometrically. Depleted rats fed on the carotene-free diet showed no vitamin A absorption spectra. Capper, McKibben and Prentice (6) showed that chickens were also able to convert carotene into vitamin A.

The Diet And Daily Forage Consumption Of An Experimental Herd Of Sheep On Utah's Winter Range, Lee A. Sharp May 1949

The Diet And Daily Forage Consumption Of An Experimental Herd Of Sheep On Utah's Winter Range, Lee A. Sharp

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The forage produced on Utah’s winter range is generally deficient in some nutrients that are required for the phase of sheep production that takes place on these ranges. This forage need only supply little more than maintenance ration, but because of low forage production on these areas and generally low quality forage, these requirements often are not met.

A Study Of Farm Mechanics On Typical Farms In The North Cache High School District, Clifford G. Hansen May 1949

A Study Of Farm Mechanics On Typical Farms In The North Cache High School District, Clifford G. Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The farmers of today are faced with many more and varied problems than were their grandfathers. This is in part due to the rapid mechanization of farming that has been developing during the past three decades. This movement for increased mechanization in farming presents a new challenge to farmers because of their responsibility in caring for farm machinery and maintaining it in an efficient operating condition. In effect, this means that the efficient farmer must devote an increasing amount of time and attention to the managerial and operative skills connected with mechanized farming. Moreover, he must acquire tools and equipment …

Teaching Combinations Of The Men Teachers Of Physical Education In The Public High Schools Of Utah, Earl G. Holmstead May 1949

Teaching Combinations Of The Men Teachers Of Physical Education In The Public High Schools Of Utah, Earl G. Holmstead

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The almost universal acceptance of physical education as an integral part of education has resulted in state legislation throughout the United States requiring the teaching of physical education in the public schools. Because of this legislation, it has become necessary to better prepare teachers to carry on a worthwhile physical education program. Efficient teaching cannot be expected to result from lack of training and inadequate preparation; therefore, the college graduate who holds a degree with no specialized training is not adequately prepared to teach effectively and efficiently in our school systems of today.

In regard to the qualifications and functions …

Some Factors Associated With The Economic Feasibility Of Reseeding Privately-Owned Cattle Ranges In Utah, James R. Gray May 1949

Some Factors Associated With The Economic Feasibility Of Reseeding Privately-Owned Cattle Ranges In Utah, James R. Gray

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The forage depletion of western ranges which has occurred during the past century is partly the result of the belief by ranchers that the forage loss was temporary and not serious. Should more forage of a high quality be desired they thought it could be produced by reseeding the ranges. The native western forages, never abundant or luxurious by eastern concepts, nevertheless were of generally high qualities. Limited by low and erratically distributed precipitation, the sparse native forages have in many areas given way to low quality plants. These plants of low quality do not have to withstand the adverse …

The Introduced Fishes, Game Birds, And Game And Fur-Bearing Mammals Of Utah, Boris Hewitt Popov May 1949

The Introduced Fishes, Game Birds, And Game And Fur-Bearing Mammals Of Utah, Boris Hewitt Popov

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For a number of years wildlife workers have realized the importance of the past histories of introduced species. Emphasis in recent years has been directed toward introductions because of the tremendous hunting and fishing pressures. Yearly increases in numbers of hunters and fishermen have been noted in Utah for the past forty years. It is hoped that this compilation of the histories of the introduced game and fish species of Utah will be of value to sportsmen and wildlife managers alike in planning future introductions.

The material included in this paper was obtained from United States Government reports, Utah Territorial …

A Guide To Be Used In Evaluating Audio-Visual Aids For Use In The Teaching Of Industrial Arts In The Junior High Schools Of Utah, Dan H. Swenson May 1949

A Guide To Be Used In Evaluating Audio-Visual Aids For Use In The Teaching Of Industrial Arts In The Junior High Schools Of Utah, Dan H. Swenson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

To find the beginning of the use of audio-visual aids in the teaching of industrial arts is difficult, if not impossible. The very nature of the work makes the use of audio-visual teaching methods absolutely indispensable. Long before the term "audio-visual aids" had been coined and before any attention had been given to the teaching method, as such, teachers of industrial arts were making use of the demonstration, the model, the exhibit, and many other teaching devices since included in the scope of the meaning of audio-visual teaching aids.

It would be hard indeed to imagine how a teacher could …

Seed And Forage Production In Four Clonal Lines Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Lygus Infestation, John Keith Noyes May 1949

Seed And Forage Production In Four Clonal Lines Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Lygus Infestation, John Keith Noyes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

No other forage crop cultivated in the United States can be used in as many ways as alfalfa. The variety of its uses make it a most useful forage crop.

The distribution of alfalfa is world wide and it plays a leading role in the production of livestock and their products. For general feeding of farm animals, alfalfa is unsurpassed. Used for pasture, it has a high capacity, which leads to large gains in grasing animals. If properly rotated and cared for, it adds nitrogen to the soil in a form that is available to plants and thereby increases crop …

Bulletin No. 336 - Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Biennial Report, 1946-1948, R. H. Walker

UAES Bulletins

During the past biennium there has been a general expansion in the research program of the Agricultural Experiment Station. This was made possible through increased state legislative appropriation and through federal funds made available by the Agricultural Research and Marketing Act which passed Congress in August 1946, although funds were not available until August 1947. Grants-in-aid by state and private agencies have also made other research possible.

The Life History And Control Of Sheep Tick, Melophagus Ovinus (Linn.), In Northern Utah, Ted Tibbetts May 1948

The Life History And Control Of Sheep Tick, Melophagus Ovinus (Linn.), In Northern Utah, Ted Tibbetts

Biology

The sheep tick, Melophagus ovinus (Linn.), is a serious ectoparasite of sheep in the sheep raising areas of Utah. Unless a more effective method of control is developed, this insect pest will continue to cause appreciable losses to the producer. Sheep ticks feed upon the blood of their hosts causing great irritation and discomfort and reduced vitality. Sheep are often so annoyed by this pest that they refuse to eat normally. This results in retardaton of growth and impairment of the best health and condition for tick-infested sheep. The sheep tick is suspected of transmitting the disease organisms, Rickettsia melophaga …
