The Relative Influence Of The Reaction In Immune Calves On The Sexual And Asexual Stages Of Eimeria Bovis, Richard A. Heckmann May 1958

The Relative Influence Of The Reaction In Immune Calves On The Sexual And Asexual Stages Of Eimeria Bovis, Richard A. Heckmann

Biology

Coccidiosis has been listed as the third most important parasitic disease in cattle (13). Foster in 1949 estimated that this disease is responsible for an annual loss of ten million dollars in the cattle industry and he believed that the economic loss is at least as great as that caused by coccidiosis in poultry (17). Bovine coccidiosis kills many calves before they are six months old. Only rarely are cattle found free of coccidia (26). According to Gibbons and Baker (18) the mortality has been estimated as high as 29.3 percent in several outbreaks of bovine coccidiosis.

Some Effects Of Aldrin, Chlordane, Dieldrin And Heptachlor On The European Earwig, E. Fred Legner

Biology

During the past 15 years the European earwig (Forficula auricularia L.) has assumed the number one position as a general pest to home owners in Utah. It has spread to nearly every corner of the state where environmental conditions are suitable for its growth, and agricultural agents in certain Utah counties have received more complaints concerning earwigs than any other insect pest. This recent interest in earwigs has resulted in many suggestions and recommendations as to the most effective means of control.

Comparison Of Serotypes And Staphylophage Types Of Staphylococcus Aureus Strains Isopated From Turkey Synovitis, Fred Herbert Ross

Biology

The turkey industry of the state of Utah suffers a great economic loss each year because of synovitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

Immunology Of Coccidiosis Caused By Eimeria Bovis In Calves, Clyde Merle Senger May 1958

Immunology Of Coccidiosis Caused By Eimeria Bovis In Calves, Clyde Merle Senger

Biology

Coccidiosis is a disease which can occur in most vertebrates and certain invertebrates as a result of infection by organism classified in the Order Coccidia of the Class Sporozoa, Phylum Protozoa. Host animals become infected by ingesting the exogenous resistant stage, the oocyst (Figures 1 and 2). These oocysts may be ingested with contaminated food and water or from the bodies of other animals. In the intestine of the new host, the oocysts rupture and release a specific number of sporosoites depending upon ths genus of coccidia involved. The liberated sporesoites penetrate epithelial or other cells of the intestine and …

Continuous Low Level Treatment Of Calves With Sulfabromomethazine As A Means Of Controlling Coccidiosis, Glen W. Clark May 1958

Continuous Low Level Treatment Of Calves With Sulfabromomethazine As A Means Of Controlling Coccidiosis, Glen W. Clark

Biology

Coccidiosis is a protozoan disease. It is produced by small, one-celled organisms of the genus Eimeria. Eleven species have been reported in cattle in this country (11). At least two species, E. bovis and E. zurnii are known to be pathogenic to cattle (21).

The Typing Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkey Epizootics, William R. Thornley May 1958

The Typing Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkey Epizootics, William R. Thornley

Biology

Utah has been confronted with the problem of turkey synovitis becoming epizootic in certain areas of the state. This is a crippling disease of turkeys causing considerable loss among birds soon after they are placed on the range. Because much of the expense of brooding and rearing has already been encountered by the growers, the loss is often severe.

An Ecological Study Of The Bottom Fauna Of Bear Lake Idaho And Utah, Earl W. Smart May 1958

An Ecological Study Of The Bottom Fauna Of Bear Lake Idaho And Utah, Earl W. Smart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In evaluating the potential ability of a lake to produce fish, probably no single standard is so important as an estimate of the amount of bottom fauna (Deevey and Bishop, 1942).

The study of the bottom fauna of Bear Lake was a part of the investigation of its limnology and fisheries, begun in 1952. This study was sponsored through federal monies made available through the Dingle-Johnson Act. The primary purpose of the study was to examine all the evidence in estimating the fish producing capacity of the lake. Bear Lake is the second largest fresh water lake in Utah but …

The Agricultural Phase Of The Technical Assistance Program Of The United States In Iran, With Special Reference To The Role Of Utah State University, Malek Mansour Esfandiary May 1958

The Agricultural Phase Of The Technical Assistance Program Of The United States In Iran, With Special Reference To The Role Of Utah State University, Malek Mansour Esfandiary

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

My thesis, while examining the broad scope of American technical assistance in agriculture to Iran, emphasizes the work of scientists and technicians who went there under contract with Utah State University (USAC). I have tried to make this work as complete as available information makes possible.

There are several problems encountered. Some technicians were reluctant to make comments which might appear to be critical of either the American administration or the Iranian government-cultural climate; some did not receive my letter probably because of a change of address. Reference materials were scarce. In most cases it was almost impossible to separate …

The Effect Of Certain Fluoride Sprays In The Production Of Soft Suture On Peaches, N. V. Narayanamoorthy May 1958

The Effect Of Certain Fluoride Sprays In The Production Of Soft Suture On Peaches, N. V. Narayanamoorthy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Pollution of the atmosphere and its potential deleterious effects on health, industry, agriculture and natural resources are causing grave concern in many parts of the world. In the past century there has developed in the fields embraced by physical and biological sciences a considerable knowledge of theoretical and applied information, serving as a versatile tool in combating such problems. Air pollution problems seem to have gained much attention with the rapid development of various industries in major parts of the world. Rural and urban areas adjoining these industrial locales are confronted with the dangerous overall problems of air pollution. Evidently, …

Chlorophyll And Productivity In A Mountain River, William J. Mcconnell May 1958

Chlorophyll And Productivity In A Mountain River, William J. Mcconnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Investigation of primary production in streams and rivers has lagged behind similar investigations in marine and lacustrine environments. Recently, however, Odum (1956) has demonstrated methods that allow the estimation of productivity of most moving waters. For reasons discussed later in this paper, Odum's method is not satisfactory for shallow, very rapid rivers as typified by Logan River. The present investigation then was primarily an exploration of a method possibly applicable to measurement of productivity in shallow rapid rivers.

Investigations of phases of the ecology and distribution of the main contributors to primary production, the benthic algae, was a necessary corollary …

A Study Of Cheese Spreads And Dips, Grant M. Steed May 1958

A Study Of Cheese Spreads And Dips, Grant M. Steed

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Each year in the State of Utah, thousands of pounds of a number of varieties of bulk and packaged cheese are returned to the manufacturing plants from the stores and other distribution points. The main reasons are: broken wrapper or rind, crushed or otherwise mutilated package, and mold development.

At the present time much of this cheese is shipped out of the state for processing. The remainder is sold at drastically reduced prices. If this unmarketable returned cheese were changed in form with good consumer acceptance the industry would experience a real savings.

Characteristics Of Manila And Related Soil Series, Flayeh H. Altaie May 1958

Characteristics Of Manila And Related Soil Series, Flayeh H. Altaie

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In many parts of the world soils have been found that have apparently been formed under climatic conditions that no longer exist. In many places in northern Utah in areas associated with ancient Lake Bonneville, deep soils, fine-textured and non-calcareous, have been observed immediately above the highest shore line of the ancient lake. These soils have essentially no free carbonates to depths ranging from 4 to 15 feet, even though they exist on relatively steep slopes. In Davis and Utah Counties, soils having these characteristics have been given the tentative series name, Manila.

Soils studied for this thesis include one …

The Natural Reproduction Of The Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki Richardson, In Strawberry Reservoir, Utah, William S. Platts May 1958

The Natural Reproduction Of The Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki Richardson, In Strawberry Reservoir, Utah, William S. Platts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Strawberry Reservoir, Utah is an 8,000 acre lake at the elevation of 7,550 feet; it has a maximum depth of 52 feet and an average depth of 18 feet. The supply of cutthroat trout eggs used to replenish and distribute this trout throughout the state are taken from two spawning traps located on reservoir tributaries. Because it has not proven economical to raise cutthroat to a larger size than newly hatched fry, it is at this stage they are planted. Because of competition, predation, and lack of space the planting back of fry to maintain the fishery and spawning run …

Cost Of Marketing Utah Lambs At Alternative Markets, Norman E. Wright May 1958

Cost Of Marketing Utah Lambs At Alternative Markets, Norman E. Wright

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Importance of lamb marketings

The production and marketing of lambs is important in Utah's economy. In 1956, Utah ranked fifth in the United States in lambs produced and saved, with 1,038,000 head produced and 840,000 marketed for consumption, table 1. Cash receipts from the lamb marketings during the year amounted to over 10 million dollars, and in addition, the state's economy benefited through revenues, employment, and raw materials which were provided by the lamb industry.

Marketing decisions

Lamb producers and handlers are faced with many decisions in marketing their lambs. They not only must decide when and where to sell, …

Linkage Relationships Of Located And Unlocated Genetic Testers In Certain Normal And Translocation Stocks Of Barley, William Ralph Andersen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Barley is an economically important cereal crop throughout most of the world. The study and elucidation of the genetic complex of this plant will add to its extensive usefulness to man, and will also provide valuable information for similar research projects on other crop plants.

Utah's Future Water Problems, Wayne D. Criddle Jan 1958

Utah's Future Water Problems, Wayne D. Criddle

Faculty Honor Lectures

Utah is rapidly changing from what was once predominately an agricultural state to an urban and industrial state. This shift is not decreasing our water needs; it is often intensifying these needs and creating many new problems. Perhaps we should ask ourselves-are we prepared to recognize and accept these changes? Are we really facing up to the problems that are developing or are we turning our heads and hoping they will go away? These changes involve technical, legal, and sociological problems never before encountered, some of which I should like to discuss.

Before attempting to look at Utah's water problems …

Bear Lake It's Fish And Fishing, William J. Mcconnell, William J. Clark, William F. Sigler

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Bear Lake is an old lake. The lake basin was form ed during the growth of the surround ing mountains; since that time, a lake has been present whenever the climate has been wet enough, but it has probably completely dried up during very dry periods.
