The Desert Bighorn Sheep Of Southeastern Utah, Charles A. Irvine
The Desert Bighorn Sheep Of Southeastern Utah, Charles A. Irvine
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In April, 1967, this study was begun in a 211-square-mile area, in the rugged, arid, Red Canyon area in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. Sixteen months were spent in the field to determine the population trend, migration, distribution, and the affect of water on distribution of the bighorn sheep.
No migration was documented, but seasonal shifts did occur. The shifts were due to the availability of water in the free state and in plants. Dry periods forced sheep to remain close to seeps and springs.
Lambing peaked in May and was over by June. Lou lamb mortality and high numbers …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Lamb pregastric (PGE) and gastric extracts (GE) have been evaluated for their role in Italian cheese flavor production. Both have been shown to produce increases in free fatty acids and in non-protein-nitrogen during incubation with milkfat and casein substrates as well as in cheese substrates. Gastric lipase and cathepsins are considered to be the additional active agents in GE. Parmesan cheese manufactured with PGE and GE added to the curd was superior in flavor when both were employed, and either extract alone was better than the uninoculated control. An assay for GE proteolytic activity has been proposed which involves the …

Brisket Disease: Influence Of Hypoxia And An Induced Calcium-Potassium Imbalance On The Mineral Composition Of Blood, Heart, Liver, Kidney, And Bone, David Eugene Bailey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Brisket disease, an affliction of cattle, is important because of: (1) economic losses, (2) similarities to chronic mountain sickness in humans, and (3) the provision of experimental animals for cardiac research. In afflicted cattle, right cardiac ventricular hypertrophy and dilatation occur and are manifestations of attempted compensation for reduced alveolar oxygen by increasing pulmonary circulation.
Geographic variations in occurrence of brisket disease in Utah indicate that hypoxia is not the sole causative factor. From the findings that afflicted cattle exhibit hypocalcemia and hyperkalemia, and the disease occurs most commonly in wet meadowland environments where potassium is high and calcium low …

Ogden's Notorious "Two-Bit Street," 1870-1954, Lyle J. Barnes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A history which records the weaknesses and failures of society may serve as its conscience. The history of Twenty-fifth Street in Ogden, Utah is that kind of history. It reminds us that it is possible for evil influences to prey upon society to the extent that it weakens and becomes vulnerable to the influence.
First the people became passive. They began to feel that the influence was there and there was little they could do about it. They then began ignoring it as if by doing so it would cease to exist. But it didn't disappear. Instead it grew and …

Area Agricultural Outlook And Adjustment Conferences, N. K. Roberts, L. A. Clement, D. B. Nielsen, R. A. Christensen
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
We live in a dynamic world, and whether or not changes are "good" for an individual or a group of people depends upon their ability to use them to an advantage. In some parts of the world farmers and ranchers are just as up-to-date in their methods at the close of their productive life as they were at the beginning because nothing has changed. The same was true in America for our grandfathers. It is not true anymore. Now days man's management ability can become "obsolete" three or four times during his productive life if he does not change with …
