All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This project was concerned with study of Neriage, Zougan, and Raku techniques in search of a creative, individual expression of the Southern Utah landscape. To find ceramic forms which would reflect its history, and show appreciation for its aesthetic characteristics of color, vastness and endless variety of form.

In the development of this artist's philosophy, a potter artist has to acquire certain qualities of form and concepts which are of basic importance in the execution of his work.

These concepts which are a part of his philosophy are first; truth to material. Since clay is a very versatile material it …

Adjustment Of Persian Students At Utah State University, Homa Aflatouni May 1976

Adjustment Of Persian Students At Utah State University, Homa Aflatouni

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Social adjustment of Persian students in terms of their social participation with Americans is analyzed by correlation and multiple regression analyses with six independent variables. The six independent variables are: education, attitude, time, English, social class, and religion. The results of correlation and multiple regression analyses support some of the hypotheses. The significant finding is that the level of education the Persian students completed before coming to the United States, their attitudes toward the Americans, and the length of stay in the United States are the most important factors while other variables are much less useful.

There was no increase in the mineral nitrogen at the deeper depths in the fall or at any depth …

An Economic Analysis Of Management Alternatives For Utah Cattle Ranches And Potential Effects On Beef Production, David B. Hewlett May 1976

An Economic Analysis Of Management Alternatives For Utah Cattle Ranches And Potential Effects On Beef Production, David B. Hewlett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The high feed grain prices of the last few years and the resulting high prices for heavy feeder cattle relative to lightweight feeder calves may provide economic incentives to market cattle from rangelands as yearlings. A majority of the economic studies investigating the profitability of retained ownership of beef calves to sell as yearlings have used a budgeting technique to compare a straight cow-yearling operation retaining all calves, to a straight cow-calf operation selling all calves. In this study linear programming was used to develop an optimum combination of various livestock marketing alternatives for maximizing net ranch income.

Two typical …

Plant Demographic Studies Of A Desert Annuals Community In Northern Utah Dominated By Nonnative Weedy Species, David R. Duba May 1976

Plant Demographic Studies Of A Desert Annuals Community In Northern Utah Dominated By Nonnative Weedy Species, David R. Duba

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Field and laboratory investigations were conducted relating to factors controlling distribution and abundance of annual species growing in a disturbed portion of the salt desert shrub zone on fine-textured soils. Dominant species on the site in the two study years were the nonnative, Halophytic, late-summer maturing, Halogeton glomeratus (Bieb.) C.A. Mey., and Bassia hyssopifolia (Pall.) Kuntze. Contrasting amounts of precipitation were received in the two years; in 1974, spring conditions were so dry that two early-maturing, sub-dominant annuals, Descurainia pinnata (walt.) Britton, and Lepidium perfoliatum L. were essentially absent. They successfully reproduced under more favorable 1975 conditions.

Studies on species …

Defining Efficient Water Resource Management In The Weber Drainage Basin, Utah, Keith D. Wilde May 1976

Defining Efficient Water Resource Management In The Weber Drainage Basin, Utah, Keith D. Wilde

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Weber Basin Water Conservancy District is a state institution, but its primary function is collecting money for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, to pay for the Weber Basin Project. Different classes of water users pay markedly different fees for identical Project services. More than half of the water developed by the Project is not used consumptively, yet supply facilities continue to be built in the Basin because they are less expensive to their owners than prices charged for the underused capacity of the Project. Paradoxically, some Basin residents are bitterly resentful of both the District and the Bureau, claiming …

Nitrogen Cycling In A Microcosm Simulation Of The Northern Arm Of The Great Salt Lake, John C. Stube May 1976

Nitrogen Cycling In A Microcosm Simulation Of The Northern Arm Of The Great Salt Lake, John C. Stube

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen cycling was studied in the hypersaline northern arm of the Great Salt Lake (332,480 mg/l total dissolved solids) using a sediment-water microcosm simulation of that system. The study demonstrated that nitrate, ammonia, and urea were not stimulating to the halophilic bacteria in the microcosm. The bacteria were simulated only indirectly simulated bacterial growth. In addition, no nitrification could be demonstrated during the study.

Weekly analyses of water samples from the north arm of the lake itself showed that nitrate and nitrite were absent, leaving ammonia as the only significant form of inorganic nitrogen in the northern lake basin. Other …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Surface Deposition In A Numerical Model Of Atmospheric Dispersion, Jackie Lewis May 1976

Sensitivity Analysis Of Surface Deposition In A Numerical Model Of Atmospheric Dispersion, Jackie Lewis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Profiles of height-dependent diffusion which accommodate site-specific diffusivities were produced. A numerical model was adapted to incorporate the profiles. The model represented three-dimensional steady-state advection and diffusion of aerosols from an elevated point source. Sorption effects were simulated with surface attachment coefficients greater than unity. This proved effective in depleting the plume differentially upward from the surface.

Insect Consumption Of Seeded Rangeland Herbage In A Selected Area Of Diamond Fork Canyon, Utah County, Utah, Diane M. Bowers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study compares insect and cattle consumption of crested wheatgrass (Agropycon spp.) on a site in Sterling Ranch, Utah County, Utah. The hypothesis tested is that insect consumption in general, and specifically consumption by Labops hesperius Uhler, significantly reduces total available cattle forage.

Labops and grasshoppers were probably the major cause of secondary damage at the study site, while the impact of thrips is unknown. A detrimental impact on range was suggested by the data, as insects consumed forage equivalent to 2.8 animal units per month, while cattle consumed forage equivalent to 2.1 animal units per month at the …

An Otherwise Report, M. Q. Rice Feb 1976

An Otherwise Report, M. Q. Rice

Faculty Honor Lectures

In defense of myself and the Honors Committee I accept this assignment as a tribute for something, possibly for setting a new record as a hunger artist or for simply staying in town and reciting the penitential psalms daily for over 40 years. I have a sneaking suspicion that they may be exposing me for not being creative in the Greek sense of fulfilling the promise of one's birth. If I had got around to writing Pericles' funeral oration, Dostoevsky's "Grand Inquisitor," or E. E. Cummings' "What if a Much of a Which of a Wind," as I fully intended …
