Suspended And Dissolved Solids Effects On Freshwater Biota: A Review, Darwin L. Sorensen, Margaret M. Mccarthy, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella

Reports

It is widely recognized that suspended and dissolved solids in lakes, rivers, streams, and reservoirs affect water quality. In this report the research needs appropriate to setting freshwater quality criteria or standards for suspeneded solids (not including bedload) and dissolveed solids are defined by determining the state of our knowledge from a critical review of the recent literature in this field. Common literature sources and computer searching routines were used as an initial source of information followed by detailed journal searches. Although some 185 journal articles, government reports, and other referecnes were cited herein (about 45 percent publicshed since 1974) …

Grindstone Flat And Big Flat Exclosures - A 41-Year Record Of Changes In Clearcut Aspen Communities, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1977

Grindstone Flat And Big Flat Exclosures - A 41-Year Record Of Changes In Clearcut Aspen Communities, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Deer browsing prevented aspen regeneration in both uncut stands and small 1/20-hectare clearcuts, even though nearby large burns regenerated successfully. Size of the clearcut or burned area may be critical in determining success of aspen regeneration; areas less than about 2 hectares in size may adversely concentrate deer use. Shrub production was less under deer use and forb production was less under cattle use than on protected areas. More apsen suckers were produced in uncut stands where cattle grazed than in stands protected from grazing, suggesting a possible relationship between sucker initiation and reduced competition from the herbaceous understory. Removal …

Down At The Hospital, Glenn E. Dickey Jan 1977

Down At The Hospital, Glenn E. Dickey

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Down at the hospital the other day the ambulance brought us an old German lady who had fallen down on Main Street. We admitted her in east wing and found no bodily damage, but did discover that she was thoroughly drunk. We removed her warmed-over cabbage tennis shoes and were in the process of replacing her Salvation Army discount dress with a hospital gown when three or four bags of Hershey's chocolate kisses fell out from some hidden foyer of her person. All the while she was yelling about her husband's federal pension and how her bishop and the police …

Survey Of The History, Development, And Medical Uses Of Chinese Acupuncture, Kendell G. Hansen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is difficult to pick up a magazine, medical or otherwise, that does not include an article about the Chinese method of diagnosis and treatment known as acupuncture. This ancient technique, about which there is so much current interest, is reputed to have originated nearly 30 centuries ago when a Chinese warrior emperor made the observation that certain arrow wounds caused pain to disappear in remote parts of the body.

During World War II, the new China of the Red Army rediscovered the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of wounded or sick soldiers during combat conditions. Today, Chinese medical …

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht Dec 1976

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of the …

Faculty Honor Lectures

Throughout most of this century Utah State University has been developing its competence to a position of eminence in the science and art of irrigation and related fields of agriculture and engineering. It has accepted the responsibility to train local as well as international students and through a contract with USAID, conduct research in developing countries. Thus, we in irrigation find ourselves an integral part of the U.S. strategy to assist in closing the gap in development and hopefully winning the battle against world famine. To many this seems hopeless, and it may be, but I have a feeling that …

Rodent-Habitat Relationships In Great Basin Desert Shrub Communities, Stephen J. Montgomery May 1976

Rodent-Habitat Relationships In Great Basin Desert Shrub Communities, Stephen J. Montgomery

Biology

Rodents were live-trapped in 2.7 ha grids in five Great Basin desert shrub communities in NW Utah during June, July, and August, 1974. The eight species captured, in decreasing order of abundance, were: Dipodomys ordii, Peromyscus maniculatus, Perognathus parvus, Eutamias minimus, Reithrodontomvs megalotis, Onychomys leucogaster, Neotoma lepida, and unknown. For each grid, mean monthly density for each rodent species, species diversity (Shannon-Wiener), and total animals captured were compared to various vegetation and soil characteristics. Densities in the first four species correlate significantly with different environmental variables. Rodent species diversity correlates primarily with shrub …

A Thermodynamic Analysis Of A Primary Waste Stabilization Pond, Will D. Pote May 1976

A Thermodynamic Analysis Of A Primary Waste Stabilization Pond, Will D. Pote

Biology

Traditional design practice for waste stabilization ponds is based upon the premise that sufficient photosynthetic oxygen must be produced within the pond to satisfy oxygen requirements of the incoming waste flow. Thus, because algae production is proportional to pond surface area, surface organic loading rate is a principal design criterion (hydraulic detention time is the other). That a possible adverse energy trade exists in the sequence of coupled reactions (aerobic waste degradation-photosynthesis) has been largely ignored. This work is focused on quantitatively articulating this energy trade, in terms of algae produced vis a vis waste degraded. This is done by: …

Feeding Studies Of Selected Predators On Alfalfa Weevil Larvae, Hypera Postica (Gyllenhal), Bakary Vassery Ouayogode

Biology

Two species of spiders and 10 species of predatory insects were fed alfalfa weevil larvae in the laboratory. Most of the studies used instars III and IV, but some used II. Daily consumption records were kept. Experiments using both weevil larvae alone, and weevil larvae together with pea aphids and lygus bug nymphs, were included. Hippodamia convergens (adults and larvae), Coccinella transversoguttata (adults), Nahis ferus (adults), Nabis alternatus (adults), Chrysopa oculata (larvae), and Collops vittatus (adults) all clearly preferred aphids to either weevil larvae or lygus nymphs. In the absence of aphids, the two coccinellids fed on weevil larvae readily. …

Adaptive Aspects Of The Vocal Repertoire Of The Willet, Tex A. Sordahl May 1976

Adaptive Aspects Of The Vocal Repertoire Of The Willet, Tex A. Sordahl

Biology

Free-living Willets, Catoptrophorus semipalmatus inornatus, were studied during the breeding seasons of 1974 and 1975 in Cache County, Utah. Upon arrival in early April the birds congregated at communal courtship-feeding ponds for 2-3 weeks. They subsequently dispersed to surrounding fields where nesting territories were maintained. The birds began forming flocks in mid-June and all birds had departed by mid-August. A spectrographic analysis is presented for the 10 adult and one chick vocalizations recognized in this study, and a numerical and a biological description is given for each call. The Pill-will-willet flight-song and the accompanying song-flight are discussed in detail. A …

The Carotenoids Of Leptinotarsa Beetles: Their Identification And Significance To Systematics And Evolution, James Meredith Poff May 1976

The Carotenoids Of Leptinotarsa Beetles: Their Identification And Significance To Systematics And Evolution, James Meredith Poff

Biology

The purpose of this study was to examine the carotenoids of species within the genus Leptinotarsa and their host plants, with the anticipation that a knowledge of the pigments and their distribution would aid in understanding the evolutionary relationships within the genus. Three age classes of insects (early fourth instar larvae, pupae, and adults) were used. Samples were extracted with acetone and methanol. Following purification, the carotenes and xanthophylls were separated by solvent partitioning and the carotenoids in each fraction were examined by column and thin layer chromatography and by absorption spectrophotometry. The presence of carotenoids was confirmed for five …

The Horse Population Of Utah And Its Impact, Scott Stewart Mckendrick May 1976

The Horse Population Of Utah And Its Impact, Scott Stewart Mckendrick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

PART I

The horse numbers of Utah had not been accurately counted since the early 1960's. It was estimated that horse and pony numbers were reaching heights as recorded before the age of tractors and automobiles. Horsemen in Utah were asking for financial assistance for public horse facilities from the Utah legislature. The first part of this study was to survey the horse population to determine an accurate count of Utah horses.

PART II

In order to be satisfied that the horse industry deserved the spending of public funds, it was necessary to know the economic contribution of the horse …
