An Analysis Of Dna Polymorphisms In Hereditary Multiple Exostoses, Brian K. Moloney
An Analysis Of Dna Polymorphisms In Hereditary Multiple Exostoses, Brian K. Moloney
Biology
Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is a bone disease characterized by multiple benign bone tumors which develop only during active skeletal growth. Previous studies have demonstrated an autosornal dominant pattern of inheritance. In this study, several cellular oncogenes and human chromosomal fragments were used as probes to identify any restriction fragment length polymorphisms in the genomes of HME affected horses and humans. Sequences homologous to the human oncogenes c-fes, c-myb, c-myc, c-raf-1 and c-sis were identified in the horse genome. Polymorphisms were identified using c-raf-1 hybridized to Bam HI and Pst I digested horse DNA, but neither appeared linked to HME. …

The Identification And Characterization Of Extracellular Components Of Colletotrichum Lindemuthianum Which Display Differential Elicitor Activity In Bean, Craig S. Tepper
Biology
Certain extracellular components from the α race of Colletotrichum Iindemuthlanum exhibit differential elicitor activity in bean cultivars. Purification of a race extracellular components by a variety of chromatographic techniques has revealed elicitor activity in components with different chemical compositions. One class of elicitors, which does not adsorb to DEAE-Sephadex or CM-Sephadex is a carbohydrate-rich complex containing galactose (17%), glucose (38%), and mannose (45%). This purified elicitor induced high accumulations of phenolics, phytoalexins (kievitone, phaseollinisoflavan and phaseollin) and mRNA's corresponding to the enzymes phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and chalcone synthase in incompatible bean cultivars (Dark Red Kidney and Tennessee Green Pod). Very little …

Factors Affecting The Sprouting Response Of Woody Caatinga Species And Their Implications For Improved Caatinga Management, Linda Howell Hardesty
Factors Affecting The Sprouting Response Of Woody Caatinga Species And Their Implications For Improved Caatinga Management, Linda Howell Hardesty
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In northeast Brazil grazing is a major use of much of the semiarid woodlands (caatinga). Animal production is limited by lack of dry season forage, primarily deciduous tree leaves. Management is constrained by the persistence of undesirable trees that sprout from the stump (coppice). This study evaluates the possibility of manipulating coppicing trees to improve caatinga management, particularly dry season forage production.
The season of cutting can influence coppicing. Trees were cut early and late in the wet and dry seasons. After two years, trees of all species cut in the late wet season produced less biomass than those cut …
The Multidimensional Concept Of Religiosity And Its Application To The Construction Of Mormon Religiosity Scales, Jeff Black
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Until the 1960's, the concept of religiosity in sociology was very underdeveloped. Although many earlier social scientists were interested in religion, the concept of religiosity was conceptually and theoretically unsophisticated. Religiosity or religiousness was most often determined by church attendance or sometimes simply church membership. In the last two decades, much has been done to rectify this condition.

Maintenance Energy Requirements Of Free Ranging Goats And Sheep, Ederlon Ribeiro De Oliveira
Maintenance Energy Requirements Of Free Ranging Goats And Sheep, Ederlon Ribeiro De Oliveira
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Measurements of energy expenditures for domestic animals are used as a basis to determine the total energy requirements for maintenance and for production. Most studies on energy metabolism have been conducted under controlled, confinement conditions, and the results extrapolated to free - ranging animals. Such approaches do not always represent the real energy costs of free existence in the range or pasture environment.
This study compared energy expenditures of sheep and goats under free-grazing conditions and assessed the accuracy of the carbon dioxide entry rate technique (CERT) as compared to the oxygen consumption method. In addition, 24-hour activity budgets were …

Comparative Study Of Elongated Chromosomes In Sheep And Goats And A Proposed Standard, Stephen H. Mensher
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A cell synchronization technique was used that consistently yielded numerous elongated chromosomes, which are necessary for producing high-resolution G-banding. The prometaphase stage of contraction was determined to have the greatest utility for detailed comparative analysis and, therefore, was used in the preparation of the proposed standard high-resolution karyotypes and idiogram.
A proposed standard high-resolution G-band karyotype of the domestic sheep and goat is presented, along with a high-resolution G-band idiogram of the goat. The karyotypes presented contain considerably more bands than contemporary karyotypes and provide much greater resolution for linear differentiation. The X chromosome of the sheep is acrocentric, rather …
