The “ethic of care,” according to Sander-Staudt, is built on the “motivation to care for those who are dependent and vulnerable, and is inspired by both memories of being cared for and the idealizations of self”. Research on teaching behaviors that make a difference to student learning implies that good relationships with students and the ethics of care are important practices of teaching. However, these are not overtly stated, “possibly because the concepts are nebulous and more philosophical than pragmatic”. The impact of one’s teaching practice on students is revealed through meetings with former students who remember interactions, unrelated to …

How Autobiographies Of Latinx Preservice Teachers Build Culturally Relevant Instruction For The Nature Of Science, Noushin Nouri, Jair J. Aguilar, Patricia Ramirez-Biondolillo Feb 2020

How Autobiographies Of Latinx Preservice Teachers Build Culturally Relevant Instruction For The Nature Of Science, Noushin Nouri, Jair J. Aguilar, Patricia Ramirez-Biondolillo

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

This chapter argues that preparing teachers to teach science in a culturally relevant context by developing their understanding of how sociocultural factors shape both their own and their students’ learning is a powerful place to begin. Latinx preservice teachers (LPST) come into education programs as learners with existing cultural understandings and experiences. The chapter presents the results of LPSTs’ autobiographical descriptions of their experience with science from early childhood into adulthood, paying specific attention to how their cultures shaped those experiences. The Nature of Science (NOS) is “a rich description of what science is, how it works, how scientists operate …

Nuestra Gloria The Center For Mexican American Studies At The University Of Texas Rio Grande Valley Celebrates The 30th Anniversary Of The Publication Of Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, Stephanie Alvarez, Amanda Lee Tovar, Mariana Alessandri

Mexican American Studies Faculty Publications

2017 was a significant year in Chicanx, queer, feminist, and American literary history, as it marked the 30th anniversary of the publication of Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza. One of the most influential books of the twentieth century, Borderlands brings forth nuanced concepts of borders and the importance of the identities shaped by them—physical, cultural, or otherwise. The book has paved the way for exploration and healing for many Chicanxs, people of color, individuals of all gender identities and sexual preferences, and everyone who has proximity to any type of border. Recognizing how Borderlands grounds a wide …

Foreign Languages Teaching Challenges: Stages, Practices And Methodologies, Khalid Aada

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Leading an engaged teaching-learning process involves considering a bidirectional transfer of knowledge between teachers and students, since it is about favoring an educational interaction environment where students are not only limited to participate in a traditional way, but expect to find meaning to their learning experience and be able to build the acquired knowledge. It’s a dialectical unit between either instruction and education or teaching and learning that would allow to identify a stage of reflection and critical thinking toward the new educational models. In other words, a field where teachers are asked to transform their role as exhibitors of …

Language And Literacy Practices Of Bilingual Education Preservice Teachers At A Hispanic-Serving College Of Education, Elena M. Venegas, Veronica L. Estrada, Janine Schall, Leticia De Leon

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This chapter focuses on an exploratory study of the language and literacy practices of undergraduate students within our Hispanic-Serving College of Education (HSCOE). HSCOEs must first understand and approach the language and literacy practices of bilingual education preservice teachers from an asset-based perspective. Language and literacy practices shape people’s identities and how they exist in the world. Language and literacy development also have an essential role in adult success since reading allows people to access, analyze, synthesize, and use knowledge to understand the world and learn new things. Much of the literature related to language and literacy practices at the …

As a borderlands’ institution, we are developing a mission and vision for our HSI identity in the college of education, as well as in our university. We envision pedagogical practices embedded in our teacher preparation that are context specific to our bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural community; one that not only prepares PTs to effectively teach all students, but also promotes strong values for equity and social justice. For our Latinx PTs, this aim has two purposes: 1) to tailor our educational practices capitalizing on their unique strengths and addressing possible challenges in their professional development, and 2) preparing them to …

The Hispanic-Serving Designation And Educator Preparation, Patricia Alvarez Mchatton, Janine M. Schall, Eugenio Longoria Sáenz

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

The creation of the Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) designation resulted from decades of advocacy efforts to ensure access to resources and recognition as institutions that served many Latinx students. Texas was at the forefront of efforts to create the HSI designation due to long-term lack of access to quality education, and negative stereotypes about the Latinx population, and an expectation for individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to assimilate into the dominant culture. Given that institutions of higher education achieve the HSI designation based on meeting a predetermined threshold, HSIs are highly diverse and serve a variety of missions. In …

The Hispanic-Serving College Of Education Special Interest Research Group Initiative: Building A Community Around A Question, Janine M. Schall, Patricia Alvarez Mchatton, Eugenio Longoria Sáenz

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This chapter aims to establish Hispanic-Serving Institution Special Interest Research Group (HSI SIRG) initiative as one way to become consciously skilled at addressing the question of what it means to be an Hispanic-Serving College of Education. While a fundamental component of the SIRG initiative was the need for accountability, the opportunity to provide various kinds of support was equally important. One common issue was overambitious research plans, with SIRGs proposing projects that would realistically take several years to complete. Other SIRGs realized that their proposed projects only shallowly addressed the focus of the SIRG initiative and more tightly aligned their …

G. Furman furthered R. J. Starratt’s work on ethical leadership, which called for an ethic of care, an ethic of justice, and an ethic of critique as necessary for authentic leadership in PK-12 settings. While essential, she found them insufficient in that they focused on the individual. The Hispanic-Serving College of Education community as a whole includes all our students, faculty, and staff, but people also belong to communities in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) beyond the university. Transforming the education of Latinx students has importance beyond the RGV. Along with the moral imperative of providing all students with a …

Gloria Anzaldúa’S Mexican Genealogy: From Pelados And Pachucos To New Mestizas, Mariana Alessandri, Alexander Stehn Jan 2020

Gloria Anzaldúa’S Mexican Genealogy: From Pelados And Pachucos To New Mestizas, Mariana Alessandri, Alexander Stehn

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This essay examines Gloria Anzaldúa’s critical appropriation of two Mexican philosophers in the writing of Borderlands/La Frontera: Samuel Ramos and Octavio Paz. We argue that although neither of these authors is cited in her seminal work, Anzaldúa had them both in mind through the writing process and that their ideas are present in the text itself. Through a genealogical reading of Borderlands/La Frontera, and aided by archival research, we demonstrate how Anzaldúa’s philosophical vision of the “new mestiza” is a critical continuation of the broader tradition known as la filosofía de lo mexicano, which flourished during a golden age of …

Three Existentialist Readings Of Gloria Anzaldua's Borderlands/La Frontera, Mariana Alessandri Jan 2020

Three Existentialist Readings Of Gloria Anzaldua's Borderlands/La Frontera, Mariana Alessandri

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This essay provides three new and related philosophical readings of Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/la Frontera: 1) in the lineage of canonical European Existentialists like Jean Paul Sartre, who provides an analysis of shame; 2) in the lineage of Mexican Existentialists like Samuel Ramos and Octavio Paz, who attribute a relative of shame to Mexicans; and 3) in dialogue with Africana Existentialists like Franz Fanon, who describe the bodily shame of nonwhites in racist societies. Anzaldúa’s concept of “linguistic terrorism,” which existentially translates into la vergüenza linguística, extends the scope of European, Africana, and Mexican Existentialisms while putting all three in dialogue …

Cultural Issues: Treating & Diagnosing Adhd, Noe Ramos, John Lowdermilk Jan 2020

Cultural Issues: Treating & Diagnosing Adhd, Noe Ramos, John Lowdermilk

Human Development and School Services Faculty Publications

ADHD refers to a diagnostic category applied to children exhibiting inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Approximately 1.2 to 2 million children are currently diagnosed with ADHD, making ADHD is considered to be the most common child psychiatric diagnosis in the United States. Public schools are constantly faced with the over-representation of students from minority populations in special education. Children with ADHD may be protected by three federal statutes: Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504), the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part B (IDEA). Given that minorities constitute approximately …

The Construction And Analysis Of Dream Metaphors From The Standpoint Of Co-Creative Dream Theory, Gregory Scott Sparrow Jan 2020

The Construction And Analysis Of Dream Metaphors From The Standpoint Of Co-Creative Dream Theory, Gregory Scott Sparrow

Counseling Faculty Publications

Co-creative dream theory posits that the dream is co-determined through the reciprocal interplay between the witnessing dream ego and the emergent content. Consequently, the resulting dream can be seen as one of many contingent outcomes based on the dreamer’s range of response through the course of the dream, as well as the broad constraints of underlying domains that account for the nature and thrust of the emergent content. From this relational view of the dream, the visual imagery is not the content itself, but rather the “mutable interface” (Sparrow, 2013) between the dream ego and the emergent content. The purpose …

Generating an RGB image from a sketch is a challenging and interesting topic. This paper proposes a method to transform a face sketch into a color image based on generation confrontation network and edge optimization. A neural network model based on Generative Adversarial Networks for transferring sketch to RGB image is designed. The face sketch and its RGB image is taken as the training data set. The human face sketch is transformed into an RGB image by the training method of generative adversarial networks confrontation. Aiming to generate a better result especially in edge, an improved loss function based on …

Preparing Bilingual Teachers On The U.S./Mexico Border: Including The Voices Of Emergent Bilinguals, Alcione N. Ostorga, Peter Farruggio Jan 2020

Preparing Bilingual Teachers On The U.S./Mexico Border: Including The Voices Of Emergent Bilinguals, Alcione N. Ostorga, Peter Farruggio

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

Language policies in the U.S., including matters relating to bilingual education, are tangled up with political tensions and ideology. All too often, the dialogue among educators and policymakers about what constitutes best practices for people learning English – for whom we will use the term emergent bilinguals (EBs) (Garcia, Kleifgen and Falchi 2008) – fails to include the voices of those they serve. The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of South Texas provides a uniquely valuable laboratory in which to study bilingual education because of its location, demographic makeup, and migration patterns. In this study, a pedagogical intervention was made …

Becoming Transfronterizo Collaborators: A Transdisciplinary Framework For Developing Translingual Pedagogies In Wac/Wid, Marcela Hebbard, Yanina Hernández

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Given that pedagogical approaches that challenge dominant language ideologies are not yet well represented in WAC/WID scholarship, this chapter outlines a transdisciplinary framework for developing translingual pedagogies. The framework is built around the notion of transfronterizo/ a collaborators because before instructors can engage their students in exploring and challenging their views toward language, instructors must first critically interrogate their own. This interrogation must consider the unique political, social, economic, and linguistic exigencies of where an institution is located. The chapter concludes by showing that a transdisciplinary and translingual collaboration that is mutually transformative changes faculty collaborators in how they perceive …

In this paper we contribute an alternative conceptualization of creativity by highlighting movement as creating spatial and temporal dimensions that are important to make sense of creativity in children mathematical thinking. Using data from an international collaboration between two teaching-research teams from the United States and Chile, we trace how children mobilized their social bodies, materials, tools, images, metaphors, languages, and improvisations in order to make sense of the concept of fractions. Based on these findings we offer a number of discussion points that highlight the importance of creating these kinds of learning spaces, the role of tasks in promoting …
