Mathematics Achievement By Immigrant Children: A Comparison Of Five English-Speaking Countries, Gary G. Huang May 2000

Mathematics Achievement By Immigrant Children: A Comparison Of Five English-Speaking Countries, Gary G. Huang

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

In this study, I examined academic achievement of immigrant children in the United States, Canada, England, Australia, and New Zealand. Analyzing data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), I gauged the performance gaps relating to the generation of immigration and the home language background. I found immigrant children's math and science achievement to be lower than the others only in England, the U.S., and Canada. Non-English language background was found in each country to relate to poor math and science learning and this disadvantage was stronger among native-born children—presumably children of indigenous groups—than among immigrant children. I …

Education Reform In Hong Kong: Issues Of Consistency, Connectedness And Culture, Chris Dowson, Peter Bodycott, Allan Walker, David Coniam

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Since the early 1990s, the pace of educational reform in Hong Kong has accelerated and broadened to incorporate almost all areas of schooling. The reforms introduced during this period can be subsumed under what has generally been labelled the quality movement. In this paper, we review and comment on a number of policy reform initiatives in the four areas of "Quality Education," English Language Benchmarking, Initial Teacher Training and the Integration of Pupils with Special Needs into Ordinary Classrooms. Following a brief description of each policy initiative, the reforms are discussed in terms of their consistency, coherence and cultural fit.

Technology And School Reform: A View From Both Sides Of The Tracks, Mark Warschauer Jan 2000

Technology And School Reform: A View From Both Sides Of The Tracks, Mark Warschauer

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

A discourse of reform claims that schools must be transformed to take full advantage of computers, while a competing discourse of inequality warns that technology-enhanced reform is taking place only in wealthy schools, dooming poor and minority students to the wrong side of a digital divide. A qualitative study at an elite private school and an impoverished public school explored the relationship between technology, reform, and equality. ...

The Significance Of The Category "Insect" For Folk Biological Classification Systems, Eraldo Medeiros Costa-Neto Jan 2000

The Significance Of The Category "Insect" For Folk Biological Classification Systems, Eraldo Medeiros Costa-Neto

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

In most human societies, the term "insect" denotes a category that includes organisms other than those of the Linnaean class Insecta, such as bats, snakes, toads, spiders, lizards, scorpions, and slugs. Such a pattern of ethnozoological classification occurs because human beings tend to project feelings of noisomeness, danger, disgust, and disdain toward some non-insect animals (including people) by allocating them to the culturally determined category "insect". Metaphors related to this lexeme highlight the negative aspects that are normally associated with real or imaginary perceptions of "insects". This article briefly discusses this cultural pattern. It is suggested that researchers who carry …

The Sound Of Prejudice : A Look At Rodgers And Hammerstein's Asian Musicals And Racial Stereotypes, Loretta M. Pippin Jan 2000

The Sound Of Prejudice : A Look At Rodgers And Hammerstein's Asian Musicals And Racial Stereotypes, Loretta M. Pippin

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

While the minority musicals ofRodgers and Hammerstein use the music and dance traditions of the American musical, they are less successful in their attempts to transcend the racism inherent in the traditions of popular musicals and films. Some musicals are of particular interest to me because they deal with attempts to integrate people of Asian extraction into the mainstream of American popular culture. As a result, the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein emerge as a blend of awareness of racism and often unconscious use of racist conventions.

Cinderella's Social Transformations, Rosemary Lutz Aug 1999

Cinderella's Social Transformations, Rosemary Lutz

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The tale of Cinderella has made its way around the world for centuries, yet this highly recognizable plot continues to be a popular contemporary theme: a young girl cast into suffering, treated maliciously, and subjected to privation eventually is summoned to a regal existence. We easily identify the Cinderella character even in the guise of a mermaid in the film Splash; as a factory worker, who lives in a dull and lifeless town which replaces Cinderella's traditional ashen hearth, in An Officer and a Gentleman; or as a prostitute whose trick turns out to be Prince Charming in Pretty Woman. …

Literacy, Technology, And Change: The Gates Of Hell, Janice R. Walker Aug 1999

Literacy, Technology, And Change: The Gates Of Hell, Janice R. Walker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I first briefly examine the history of technology as it impacts on literacy practices, and especially the history of resistance to technological developments in the humanities. In so doing, I also briefly examine some of the possible ideological underpinnings of this resistance, including looking at some of the arguments proposed to counter it. More specifically, I consider how literacy practices, pedagogical practices, and assessment and gatekeeping practices in the field of composition studies impact on and are impacted by the intersection of computer technologies and our field. Finally, I offer some suggestions for ways in which our …

Facing The Consequences: Identifying The Limitations Of How We Categorize People In Research And Policy, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn Steele

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Social policy researchers and policy rules and regulation writers have not taken advantage of advances in assessing ways in which social representations of ideas about people can convey alternative explanations of social life. During the past decade a growing number of scholars have considered how representational practices and the representations that are outcomes of such practices have value. Neglecting to consider representational practices has consequences including failure to mobilize and sustain alternative ideologies that reject narrow perspectives on families and communities. ...
